  • These days, most look back on Post-Grunge with a sense of regret. The biggest bands associated with the label such as Nickelback and Creed have become internet punching bags. However, Post-Grunge dominated rock radio for years from the late 90s up until the mid 2000s. Many of these bands even crossed over to the mainstream pop charts. The subgenre was simply massive and unavoidable. Being an offshoot of the original Grunge movement of the early 90s, the majority of Post-Grunge bands traded in the authenticity for a shot at fame and fortune. As a result, the music suffered as it lacked the key element that made Grunge what it was. Here are eight of the worst Post-Grunge bands of all time in my opinion. It's fine if you disagree!

    I think the issue with Post-Grunge isn't even so much that they were watered-down and commercial sounding, it's that I think after Kurt died people, especially in the music industry, saw it as a closing of an era. I remember reading a quote from one of the guys in Mudhoney that when they released an album in around 1995 a lot of critics turned on them for being "grunge". Post-grunge was seen as a shallow hold over from a bygone era because those in control of the pop music narrative at the time decided that grunge died with Kurt Cobain.
    I'm not saying that the overly commercial nature of many of the post-grunge bands didn't help with tarring the genre, but you really can't write off ALL of the bands lumped into it with that same criticism. I think it would be hard to call a group like silverchair sell-outs, when they were clearly just a young band that wore their influences on their sleeves to start with.

    I didn’t think much of Creed when they were new, but I’ve come to respect them more over time, and they have some good songs. They were very commercial, but they were good at it. And different. Don’t disagree about any of the others. Forgettable at best. But I’m also not a fan of grunge. A lot of poor playing and nihilism, and unfortunately that bore itself out in the way almost all of the lead singers of the biggest bands went. Severely depressing. Grunge ruined rock for a long time.

    I feel like this list can be wildly subjective, something you never said it wasn’t.
    It’s like fashion. Cyclical and fast fading. Some of the bands mentioned I hadn’t even heard of and some I’d argue that you just didn’t like them because they “sounded like Kurt” because they were seemingly all mashed together at a similar time, since you appear to be pretty young. The thing is, you can try your best to be the Rich Little of singing, but it doesn’t work that way unfortunately. I thought Scott Weiland had a VERY distinct voice then a guy on one of those dumbass singing shows comes on and covers one of their tunes and now he’s their singer. Music is far too subjective to rate, but these kind of videos are fun to slam those we didn’t like. I was never a Nickelback fan, but some I did enjoy debuts of many of them, and I dare say Dysfunction is what put Staind on anyone’s radar which was an amazing album before they turned to ballad after ballad. Even Come Clean was a good first album, but for most of these bands, that I have heard of, there was a steep fall off after their first album.
    It is difficult to say what PEOPLE like, but I’d argue this is probably a rock fans list for sure. Nickelback has sold more albums than I’ve jerked off in life and that’s a mental image to leave you with for both concepts.
    Be good, stay safe.

    post-grunge sucks almost all the time - I have some respect for Staind though - Aaron Lewis is a genuinely good singer - who isn't a lame Cobain/Staley imitator - they also have some good songs from back in the day - & innovated enough to belong just as much in the nu-metal camp - thanks for the great video!! 🤟

    The original grungemeisters were praised for their authenticity but they were difficult to manage. As soon as the fat old white guys in suits found out there was so much money to be made wearing dirty clothes they just ran it into the ground. It was so much more lucrative to just manufacture post grunge bands out of mediocre talent. It’s very reminiscent of the manufactured teen idols of the early 60s. The original first wave rockers were difficult to manage too when you consider chuck berry and Jerry Lee Lewis along with tragic figures like buddy holly. So much more lucrative to turn up the collars on Frankie Avalon and Fabian. Fans weren’t fooled by these no talent pretty boy payola wannabes and they were soon listening to Motown and the British Invasion. Post grunge lasted until the next cash cow came along and then the cds went out at yard sales for 25€

    I would remove Nickelback and Creed and replace them with Godsmack and Buckcherry, I never thought Buckcherry was good and Godsmack's first three albums were great (even if they are extremely derivative and basically copy other songs, as is the case with Time Bomb, which is basically Last by Nine Inch Nails), but everything that came after was horrible, specially the recent ones.

    • @TheMusicNarrative
      @TheMusicNarrative  2 місяці тому +1

      I was going to add Buckcherry but they're not really influenced by Grunge nor have that sound. They sound more in line with 80s hard rock. But I agree, both Buckcherry and Godsmack are far from great bands

  • @PuddleOfPizza
    @PuddleOfPizza 2 місяці тому +3

    Although I get why they're ranked higher, I personally don't think Puddle Of Mudd is anywhere near as bad as Trapt, Saving Abel, Hinder and Theory of a Deadman.
    They definetly suffer from inconsistency (Not to mention Wes and his abundance of legal issues), But when they tried they could make some pretty solid stuff for radio. Granted, That almost exclusively applies to the first two albums. Everything from Famous onwards can get pretty bad.
    Though I think their biggest issue above all else was the fact that they were esembled by Fred Durst, Puddle Of Mudd prior to his involvement was a late era grunge band with a completely different lineup and sound. Their 1994 and 1997 releases sound much more like grunge than anything those bands did in the 2000's. (Not that I really care much about authentic grunge anyway but Wes Scantlin was very much of the era)
    Had the original lineup still been together, We probably would have gotten a far better debut than Come Clean was. I still like that album and I'd even say that Life On Display was the best thing that lineup produced period. But I could live without Control and Blurry if it meant their musical output would be better.
    The other bands though... Yeah, I love Staind's first few albums and think early Creed and Nickelback are decent. But the rest is sludge that only exists because Nickelback and Puddle Of Mudd were too big for their own good. (Well besides Trapt, They're just bland)
    When it comes to Post-Grunge for me there's a certain subsection of it that I like VS Another that I don't.
    The subsection that borrows from Nu-Metal and focuses more on real issues like drug addiction, depression ect. (I.E Shinedown, Seether, Godsmack, Staind, Chevelle, Early Avril Lavigne, Three Days Grace, And Early Puddle Of Mudd) is what I like, I even prefer them to the original grunge bands for as controversial as that may be to say.
    ...Now the subsection that borrows from glam metal and focuses more on creating dude-bro smut anthems on the other hand? (I.E Theory of a Deadman, Hinder, Buckcherry, Saving Abel, Half of Nickelback, My Darkest Days, Pop Evil) That's not my thing and I think most of it is god awful. The only Post-Grunge smut anthem I actually love is Control by Puddle Of Mudd, But that song's energy carries it so hard to where the lyrics don't even matter.
    Idk, I grew up after the grunge era so I didn't really care about what was or wasn't percieved to be more authentic. I respect it obviously but it didn't grab me nearly as much as Nu-Metal, Classic Rock, Or actual good Post-Grunge music. But that's just me. Linkin Park sort of defined my musical taste so I lean towards their style of writing/production more.

      @@uwrekdme Yeah, I'm still not the biggest fan of Volume 4 in comparison to the first three but I can tell that Wes was still trying on that one. I even give Welcome To Galvania a pass since it was the first album in over a decade and came from a good place. (Just needed better mixing and vocals)
      I don't know what went wrong with Ubiquitous, It's not the worst album I've ever heard but the mixing is hot garbage and most of the songs I genuenly liked were songs that were already available prior like Poke Out My Eyes and Dance With Me/Piece of the Action, U Wrekd Me was the only new song I liked. And the rest is like you said, A sloppy mess of demos. (The demos of those demos sound better than the entire album)
      I wasn't there so idk what happened to Wes in between Galvania and Ubiquitous, But things took a turn for the worst after the pandemic. I've heard nothing good since then.

    Post-grunge and nu metal were just terrible.
    Due to a myriad of factors (Rick Beato has a good grasp on the history if you want to look it up) grunge was basically the last organic and pure musical movement in rock.
    Sure there was the Post Punk Revival which was pretty cool but it didn’t have nearly the cultural impact that grunge did.
