The Rise & Fall of Days of the New

  • Days of the New became an overnight rock sensation back in the late 90s. Their 1997 debut spawned the massive radio hit "Touch, Peel and Stand." This is the song that put the band on the map. It was inescapable at the time and still is today (if you listen to the radio anymore, that is). The principal force behind Days of the New was Travis Meeks, a gifted songwriter and musician that hit it big at just 18 years old. He went from recording on a 4-track in his bedroom to opening for Metallica in a very short period of time. The world was truly in his hands. With a talented band behind him, Travis had endless potential. But his story quickly took an unfortunate turn.
Severe drug addiction got ahold of Travis in the early 2000s and never let go. It all started with getting prescribed painkillers for a kidney stone. From there, things got dark fast. It got so bad Travis was even featured on the A&E series Intervention in 2005. Understandably, his music career stalled out as a result. Days of the New had the potential to take over the rock world for years to come. Travis alone had enough talent and drive to do anything he desired. Instead, he spent years in hiding abusing drugs throughout the 2000s, which he was never able to fully bounce back from. Days of the New's original line-up did briefly reunite in 2014, but again, Travis's addiction led to issues. Following this failed reunion tour, he was in and out of jail for 6 years.
Today, Travis Meeks appears to be sober and in good spirits. Regardless, his band Days of the New is now a relic of a time long gone, unfortunately forgotten by the general public. This is the rise and fall of one of the best bands of the 90s that fell apart for a really sad reason.

Travis is an amazing musician that had so much potential. Being a singer on the spectrum myself, I can say from experience that being on stage and interacting with people is very difficult for an Autistic person. I can only imagine what it was like for him doing it at that level at such a young age. It's unfortunate that Autism was not well understood at that time and he didn't yet have a diagnosis. If he had come along today, his support needs would be better understood and his mental health would been better protected. Having also struggled with addiction in the past as well, I know how easy it is to turn to drugs when you are overwhelmed. I hope that he feels comfortable enough to give it another shot one day. Some of his more recent work is even better than the older stuff. He is one of my favorite singer/songwriters, and it's sad that he didn't reach the level that he should have.

Well, hard to see that picture of him totally finished. I am from Brazil, Dotn has exploded on that 1998 summer. I have imported the other 2 CDS in 2001 because they were nor released there. I was a bassist at that time and changed to acoustic guitar because of Dotn. Indeed many songs of my band at that time were inffluwnced by him. Then time has passed i started to work drop the music Married and started to seach about my past heroes. And this is what i found about him. Só bad. He is just 3 years older than me. What a pity

I have only a hazy memory of this band existing. This bio makes me want to check them out - not the first time. :)
    Dead Reckoning sounds familiar.
Sad story. Some major highs and lows.

Touch, Peel and Stand is amazing. Shelf in the Room is great, also.

I love "Shelf in the Room", "Now", "Limited Eyes", "Black Curtains", "Another Flaw" and "Place With The Sky". Those are some of my favorites, but there is nothing that I don't like of his. I will always be rooting for a fellow Aspie, and I hope to see him back on top one day.

I noticed that! It _is_ reality, so that’s bound to happen now and then.

Met him back in the day, around 07-08. I was around a lot of other people with the same issues as him and my take was that his problem is far worse than addiction. He was one of those guys who absolutely positively believed he was always far smarter than everyone else regardless of the mess he was standing in. I only met him a couple of times when he would come into the bar I was working at. Excepted VIP treatment coming in for drinks. I still don't like that guy from our brief interactions and that was 18 years ago. Just arrogant.
