    Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. The year is now 2022. No entertainers act can out class the entertainers of the pass. Thanks to the recoding and movies and shows of live acts and pre - redcordings, generations after can experience the great acts of the past.

    Ronald Reagan was everyone's uncle back then. He had that kind of appeal. Sinatra and Martin were the perfect choice for Reagan's big ball. Wish I could've been a fly on that stage.

    Two of the all time greats. How you are missed. I was blessed to sing professionally for many years and at age 14 I sang on Sinatra s High Hopes. Years later I worked as part of an 8 voice backup vocal group on the Dean Martin Show for six years. Nicest man that ever lived. How blessed was I!!

    Such class, grace and natural charisma by both Frank and Dean. Made it look so effortless. I love how Frank referred to Dean as his “buddy” a few times. Imagine Frank Sinatra referring to you as his “buddy” … a term not used just in passing either. To be his “buddy” was to have such a loyal friend like that … for life.

      Class like how Sinatra and Martin constantly cheated on their wives and made racist jokes against Sammy Davis Jr. Sinatra married Mia Farrow when she was 21 and he was 50 and he abused her. I would much rather take our celebrities now than the womanizing fakes who wore tuxedos to mask the filth of their personal lives. Also Reagan was a corrupt, senile criminal who should have gone to prison for arming Iran with weapons used against the Israelis and lying to congress and the American people about it.

      thanks for letting me speak in your place, in avance, to myself: I wonder if the big waves of immigrants came in after the time of the American civil war (interestingly, when the Bismark Germany fought the Austrians, but that was not a civil war, just the opposite). The second thing is that my German language doesn't seem to have a public "Our country". As it now occurs, my ex-chancelliere Merkel, Angela, would say: "my country" (in that case that is not my country - could you say, in America: that is not our country - just trying to joke, considering the Ukrainian crises). Anyway, even more so, idiomatic "Let's" and "Let's not" (hurst wall street, for instance) refers to "out country" and just does not in my culture. In my culture, it's always, only, forever: "Let's stay together", it's the two of us and may be some family. But it's never "our country", with me.

    It's nice to see Dean acting normal for a change instead of that image that he always had with a cigarette and a drink in his hand and acting somewhat inebriated. I've always noticed whenever there was anything to do with Reagan, he would always act somewhat normal. He was an excellent entertainer he truly was. May he rest in peace.

      He was never better - or more real and funny - than when he was with Jerry. And the same with Jerry. They had a magic together they both lacked as singles, as incredibly successful as both men were. The drunk act that Dean did wasn't real - and it was forced. He never had the same chemistry with Frank as he did with Jerry. Those Colgate Comedy Hours are the real thing.

    • @pamelahawley4844

      @@matthewgallagher1761 Thank you for that truth. This banter with Sinatra is forced and they don't connect. They were both successful individually, absolutely. But the quality, the integrity of the comedy, the connection, the locked-in connection they had together was absolute magic. I think they both took it for granted..... and it broke both of their hearts, although Dean was more reserved about it. How do you have a connection like that and walk away... so much ego, outside forces that pulled them apart. But, I am grateful they had those 10 years! How I wish they could have gone their own way, and, then just performed together for even 2x per month. Just to have it all aborted is so painful. We must cherish those connections! The banter with Frank did not work at all. I am sure Dean feels it.

    • @donaldperez7981
      @donaldperez7981 3 роки тому +9

      @@matthewgallagher1761I don't think that the drunk act was forced. What happened was, when Dean broke off from the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis's partnership, obviously Dean was on his own. While performing, Harry Mills from The Mills Brothers suggested to Dean, hey, you look a little stiff you need to relax try putting a cigarette in your hand and have a shot of whatever? to calm you down; and have a glass of 🍷 in the other hand or some hard liquor in the other and that will relax you. He tried it and it worked. So if it's not broke don't fix it. At the time he needed something new to reinvent himself and he used it throughout his life it was just part of his image. Though it was always be Martinelli's apple juice in his glass cuz it almost sounded like his name or tea because he really didn't drink. On stage he would smoke just like anyone else would in back in the day, but while on TV, he never did drink. The FCC would not have allowed it. He was known to have a glass of wine only while having dinner. But other than that, he really wasn't a drinker.

    • @matthewgallagher1761
      @matthewgallagher1761 3 роки тому +5

      @@donaldperez7981 I meant that he was far more genuine, and more himself, when he and Jerry were teamed. And for Jerry it was the same. He overdid the hysterics, just as Dean overdid pretending to be drunk. Together, they brought out each other's fuller talents: Dean never sang better than when he and Jerry were teamed. Jerry was able to play it straight sometimes and let Dean do the comedy. I don't doubt Harry Mills gave him good career advice - and there was another older comedian named Joe E. Lewis, who was famous for doing a drunk act that Dean also copied, my point is that it was nowhere near the same - or as good or magical or REAL - as when Dean and Jerry were a team. They were as big as the Beatles or Elvis during their heyday. That came because their "act" wasn't really an act: it was two incredible performers who had perfect chemistry and timing. I wish they'd been able to perform together, on occasion, through the years, as their performances in specials would have been true events.

    • @matthewgallagher1761
      @matthewgallagher1761 3 роки тому +1

      @@pamelahawley4844 Well said, Pamela, and couldn't agree more. Those Colgate Comedy Hours show the great range they had: they could be clowns, they could do a song and dance, they could do banter, they could talk like two real people, and bring out each other's talents much more. The Dean/Sinatra shows, while very good, did not have anywhere that same magic. Sinatra had no sense of humor, for one.
      Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the Dean Martin show - I wasn't even born when Dean and Jerry were a team - and always enjoyed the part of the show when he just sat on the couch and sang. But he didn't use his voice as fully as he did in his years with Jerry. And he played a character. He wasn't himself. I agree - I wish they could have found a way to work together once in awhile through the years. Those shows would have gotten huge ratings.

    Dean here was in the best shape of his later years. He’d kicked his dependence on pain meds, made up with Jeanne, was appearing regularly on TV and had successful SRO appearances in London and Paris. His energy and drive are obvious in this clip. Sadly, it wasn’t to last.
    In scrolling through these comments I’m perplexed by those that think Dean was at his best with Jerry Lewis. He was constantly marginalized these years, even admitted by Lewis. Only after the breakup did people understand how important Dean was to the act. Anyone who actually saw Dean’s variety shows on NBC would know how gifted he was and better off without Lewis stepping on his talent. He played straight man, comic lead, sang, danced and made every guest on the show look better.
