    Yeah, that’s really about all you can do with it. I always take it a step further and run ice and water shield under the skylight, then strip it all in sandwiching the skylight completely. Then after I put my base flashing on, I add two more pieces over the sides of that just in case. Overkill I’m sure, but definitely makes it bulletproof. Wouldn’t be too hard just to throw in two hooks and a board to set all your material on and stand on if the roof is that steep. Definitely saves on the scuffs. Also, if your waterline ends up on the edge of the tin, you should be adding a flat stock piece of metal under that waterline. This would mostly pertain to snow and ice back up because the edge of the tin is basically exposed in that waterline. Again probably overkill, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to make the install better.

    Good thing you're watching the installers with the instruction booklet in your hand! Like previous post stated, they need the Velux training class to be confident in what they're doing. The Ice and water shield needs to be tight up to the gasket flap and tucked underneath and follow down to the tight corner so the aluminum flashing doesn't perforate it when installed. Too bad you couldn't do the install before the roof was put on. Yes, those shingles are a P.I.T.A! Thanks for the video!

    I charged costumer 2600$ for this sky light. Exact same 10/12 pitch. Gave my helper 450$ took us a good full day. Nice work fellas. Stay safe.

    "Expert" installers wouldn't need a coach like in this video. These skylights and their kits have been out for many years now. Velux have been the best skylight we have used. Good job though.

      this video is not for expert installers, more for DIY home owners, and for educational purposes to show home owners what it takes to install skylight right. We have seen few videos where roofers didnt do minimum requirement flashing work when replacing roofs, or justify it as "not important"

    I like how this is promoted to have this one guy teach the way of installing a skylight. Instead he sits back and reads the manual while others do all the work.

  • @eddiegreg7064

    I am one for redundancy and this is just bare minimum moisture protection.
    When you install ice and water (non granulated) under the skylight, the fasteners are sealed helping to prevent any moisture built up under the roofing from following the fasteners and potentially causing damage. I like to see more than what you should ever need for protection, because sometimes life just happens.
    Usually agree with your install suggestions and I'm not saying this is incorrect, just stating that heavy winds and ice can creep in ways that this stand alone method may fail.
    Thanks 🙈🙉🙊

    • @roofingtips
      @roofingtips 4 роки тому +1

      If you look, the ice and water is installed on the decking and over the felt. That is verbatim what Velux requires per spec worldwide. If you built up more layers of ice and water, you could run into issues where the cladding won’t fit because what you installed is now so thick. That would cause bigger problems. I trust Velux, but I see where you could be concerned

    Crazy, just got off a 395 bundle house with camelot 2's. My crews first time installing them took us 5 days but looks beautiful now that its all said and done. Also, great way to learn how to properly install a Velux skylight is to attend their training. They hold them every year usually the start of the season all my installers have Velux training.

    It’s extra work to go back and flash the skylight if it’s newcon. That way you don’t have to use a rack pattern around a skylight. Too bad it wasn’t deck mounted... much more reliable and changing it in the future is as easy as changing a lid on a jar.

    • @divinee.155

      Yes but more ways for water to get in once you start adding pices water will get in. A unified body is key

    Very cool skylights but people or (roofers) need to know the kit velux provides it's good for shingles but alot of times the dont have the right kit for tile roofs,specifically high profile tiles, I came across a few jobs where I HAD TO MODIFY THE flashing around the curve.

    • @roofingtips
      @roofingtips 4 роки тому +1

      Correct, we had to double up some of the step flashing to keep the lap consistent.

    What about the insulation board on the underside of the decking? Does that not void shingle manufacture warranty? This is a genuine question because a manufacturer rep once told me it does

    • @roofingtips
      @roofingtips 4 роки тому +1

      That’s not an insulation board. It’s a radiant barrier. All new homes in this area are being installed with radiant decking.

    Velux is the best. I prefer to build my own curbs and flashings. This way I change from shingles to metal or flat, raising the skylight as high as I want.. Just using their hood.

    I can't imagine if you weren't standing there giving direction what your installers would have done. You shouldn't have needed to tell them how to install things, let along to take of the red tape. At least in the end these two skylights were done correctly. You need to have everyone trained long before allowing them to do things on their own without direct supervision.
