This video will provide you with an example of how you can frame and drywall a skylight for a roof using engineered trusses that would go between two rooms. It could also be used to go over more areas like a kitchen, bedroom and hallway if the floor plan and building design allowed it to.

One point to consider with the original design - by sharing one skylight for 2 rooms, you also share sounds and noises. In this example, it's shared between the master bedroom and the master bathroom - which is totally fine. But if someone is planning to share it across 2 different rooms, divider should be considered.

      Agreed!
As one who has built skylights from scratch, and also have built speaker cabinets, literally this is a giant audio amplifier in your ceiling projecting the sound from one room to the other, and amplifying sounds from the roof.
There is zero situations I would suggest this. Just add 2 skylights.
But more so, for all this work, and given the light value, go buy two round off-the-shelf skylights from a Home Depot.
The insides are fully reflective. They take about 2h to install, don't need to do all this shoring up crap.

I would place some kind of plexiglass at the bottom of the skylight with the dividers. Also consider the direction of the sun. I am assuming that the skylight is on the southern side of the roof.

I have a question for you. I’m installing a skylight in our home that has traditional rafters. I’m going to be cutting one rafter and one ceiling joist out then reinforcing it with double headers. Do I also need to do double rafters and double joist on the ones that will boarder the skylight opening?

It's more common to have double rafters on each side when using roof rafters, but sometimes it won't be when using engineered roof trusses. I've seen only one joist or head out blocks on truss roofs also, but not when using rafters.

Could you do a vido on framing a large 36 x 72 skylight?

The man who has enough money to hire anyone, but I understand you want to do it yourself :) I will put your video on a list of videos to be made in the future and thanks for the video suggestion.

I want to add a skylight to a dark hallway but the AC is in the middle of it as well as the ductwork to the rooms. Possible? Options? Alternatives? Appreciate any help. Thanks.

You might be able to design something to work, but it would take me ever to explain all of the different ways that might not be approved by your building inspectors.

Do you have any designs of side by side skylights in a truss roof? We're struggling with boxing in two cut outs next to each other since the spacing is 2 foot OC.

How close to the ridge can you place a skylight?

    • @gregvancom

I would think you could place it right next to the roof ridge, unless it would create some type of structural problem.
