The biggest myth about Starfield, (other than people suggesting that the stories have the slightest logic to them and aren’t filled with game breaking, gaping plot holes that a 10 year old should feel its intelligence being actively insulted by, I mean) is that, “You should play it for 20, 30, 40 hours before it gets good.” That’s a flat out lie. It gets way, WAY WORSE as you play on. And just WHO TF thinks it’s a good idea to promote the notion that publishers should be allowed to get away with shitting out games that aren’t entertaining inside the first hour anyway!?

    • @ashroskell

@@merkbromerkington3215: This time, the problem with Bethesda’s latest game is unmoddable. You can’t come up with a mod that rewrites the basic premise of the game, its nonsense, illogical story; its bafflingly sociopathic companions; its chillingly corporate and immoral, “morality,” or just the fact that a 10 year old will point to the gaping plot holes (mine literally did) and feel insulted by the juvenile level of plotting and writing.
The first question my friend’s son asked me was, “What have these people been doing for 40 years, if they’re an exploration organisation?” I asked him what he meant and he said, “They haven’t even scanned the wildlife or the plants on their homeworld, let alone logged and studied them. They’re literally on their doorstep!” And it was one massive plot hole after another from there.
None of it makes any sense. There’s no internal logic to Starfield’s world.

I encountered a Terrormorph on Kreet, the very first planet you go to with Vascoe to stop the pirates from attacking you. There was an abandoned lab on the planet and I ran over to it after killing the pirates. Later I realized that POI was just a procedurally generated POI when I started the UC questline and it killed any immersion in that quest for me.
The NPCs go into describing the terrormorphs like they're some big bad I had never encountered. I was thoroughly disappointed when I realized I had already killed one at the very start of the game. It was the moment I realized there was really nothing left for me to discover in SF, and I was only 50 hours into the game.

Had this same experience only it was on Akila at the very beginning of the game. I was looking forward to more of these monster encounters, only to discover none would happen until I did the UC questline. Don't even get me started on how few terramorphs I encountered on Londinion. The writing and dialog made it sounds like there would be legions of terramorphs But no. And Londiinion was suppose to be some quarantine zone locking all those terramorphs in the city. But once I got there, I could just walk right out of that city. And so could the terramorphs if they had a mind to. So lame and disappointing.

Imagine, for example, if being a Ranger created new dialogue and quest completion options. Maybe people who find out you are a Ranger might have different reactions or expectations about you. Maybe the Rangers can help you by providing forensic support in some cases. Maybe the Rangers will come after you if you sully their name by carrying out evil actions.

There are so many engine problems that trying to keep the game stable while also modifying it to do what you want it to do is obnoxious. Bonus points when Bethesda pushes an update to the game, which in turn breaks most, if not all, of your mods until the mod authors are able to update them... if they even decide to update them at all.

Yeah, even as someone who is enjoying the hell out of Starfield. I am not looking forward to trying to mod it. Bethesda said they are going to be updating this more than any of their other games. And all that means is that modding will be a nightmare for years to come.

      @TheSupermuffin12 Рік тому +2

@@roserevancroix2308 Oh I agree. The game is fundamentally broken in a way that games like Skyrim or Fallout 4 were not. The choice of randomly generated planets doomed this game in a way that mods can't fix.
Even if someone made one really good hand-crafted planet, or a great quest that would not fix the game as a whole. I was just talking about new gun mods and stuff like that. I don't expect every random gun mod to keep updated with Starfield if they start dropping a ton of updates and DLC.

I deleted the game after 20h. As much as i didnt like Fallout 4, it got me going because of the exploration. I also somehow really enjoyed the settlement building. All the junk you picked up was also useful. Here the outposts are useless, just get some credits and buy all the resources you need. The exploration is dead. The moment that i turned the game off and unsinstalled it was when i was on a planet, and decided to check some ship wreckage point of interest. It was EXACTLY the same as the one ive seen like 1 hour earlier, It had the same items, in the same exact position laying around. Like, how lazy can you get. It felt like im being trolled. Unfortunately what they’ve learned is that they can KEEP DOING THIS. I mean they STILL have a loyal base of fanboys who will defend this garbage to the end.
And even worse they seem to have a very effective system of enticing content creators to basically sell this garbage for them and once it’s sold try and console their victims with moral support.
      Hype and sell.
      Hype and sell.
      Then abandon.
      Let the modders take over.
Our job is done and we got paid.

I specifically refused to flirt with Sarah until she initiated any actual interest first and got through all of her questing until the point where they just starkly ask you to choose friendship or romance. This all after, again, I choose no flirtation lines and she never got flirty with me. He made a joke that tons of xbox's were being for q&a were running starfield. It's insane to me that after so many years of working with gambryo and it's creation derivatives that Bethesda seemingly can't even program with it properly. For so many years I've heard that Bethesda changing engines would be a bad idea because of having to relearn everything and that their main problem is treating polishing and bug fixing like an afterthought, at this point I wouldn't be surprised if it's a combination of spaghetti code, tech debt, and Bethesda's own culture of laziness lack of ambition has finally started to catch up with them combined with the release of BG3 actually SHOWING what a proper role playing game is that much of the general public have realized that Bethesda offers jack shit compared to other companies.

This isn't Skyrim where you can crawl out of Helgen and immediately ignore any quest to do your own thing for 150 hours, because there is nothing to do outside of what has been placed into the game for quest design.
So unless you like staring at the same dozen buildings and fight the same four types of humans in them, or like building outposts that have no purpose aside from producing resources, questing is all you have. Any mod that would enhance the gameplay would do that for the quests. And the quests are insanely bad for all the reasons you mentioned.

At least CDPR had the balls to make every single romance-able character in Cyberpunk have their own sexual preference. Judy wont sleep with you if you’re a male V. Panam won’t sleep with you if you’re a female V. It’s a very minor touch but it really does go a long way to truly establish those characters as real people. Granted that sort of thing is CDPRs bread and butter so it definitely expected of them. Not Bethesda unfortunately.

It is kind of funny that Constellation is so goody-goody, yet the only reason to follow through on the whole relic gathering thing is so you can gain power. Which is basically an evil motif, the origin story of some kind super-villain or galactic emperor/sorcerer. If left alone, the Starborn would have gathered up the relics and moved on to a NG+, leaving the galaxy alone. So, off you go on a quest for personal power... while being constantly looked down upon for doing anything slightly non-good.

Honestly, after thinking about the Pilgrim's notes a bit (specifically their comment on how jumping between universes *is not fulfilling*), the weird way the gamespace is designed, and the way that the mechanics combine... I really think the game wants to incentivise slow play. As such, I reckon I benefited from barely having time to play Starfield at launch. I could never game for more than an hour or two at a time, once every couple of days. So I ended up taking everything pretty slow, spending time in single locations rather than grav-jumping between objectives rapidly, and being pretty happy to sink an entire play session into putting a ship together or fiddling with outposts.
Unfortunately, that's also where a lot of weird choices in game design jumped out at me. The absolutely lacklustre "no consequences for your quest decisions" thing. The bizzare gating of quality-of-life features and furniture (like storage) behind pretty investment-heavy perks. The UI design, the inability to remove the weirdly condescending pop-up tips, the way that the game bugs out and resets interiors of ships and player homes, including the contents of containers (and some display furniture doesn't even work). The emptiness of the galaxy. The utter lack of model variants for unique weapons and armour. The way that a lot of loot tables (like mannequins in the wild) are bugged. The weird hivemind-goody-two-shoes-morality of all the companions, despite them being written as very different people.
It feels like a game that, in three or four years, will have had enough patches, DLC, and mods (both quality of life and content-based) will be something I can sink dozens of hours into. A nice big sandbox full of stuff, easily able to fit the sheer variety of content that modders like to cram into megapacks - something the old worlds of Fallout and Elder Scrolls never really could accomodate without feeling a bit weird.
That said, I didn't mind the floatiness of the main quests and lack of "ending". I think Bethesda put a lot more effort into the "side" quests based around factions, locations, and npcs. The way most people ended up playing Skyrim and Fallout really did ignore the main quest, so I'm not too surprised they went in this direction.
I also didn't mind the "choose between your two favourite Constellation companions" moment. I wasn't actually expecting Bethesda to commit to killing off a companion character, and was pleasantly surprised when it tied into the Emmisary's identity too. I didn't view it as "cheap", just kind of interesting.
Solid and comprehensive review, as always. Definitely think that a big split in player response has been between slow players and rapid/completionist players.

They're trying to keep people watching/playing as long as possible rather than making the experience worthwhile to begin with. In particular, games are incentivized to do this in the hopes that players will stick around and engage with the microtransactions, buy the battle pass, etc... though Starfield has no excuse for it since it's singleplayer and doesn't have any of that crap (yet).

In Satrfield it's like: "Oh... right! So, all of the cool things, like mechs and power armor, and tanks, all of that exists, it's just against some bullshit war convention so it's all locked up and now we are all a bunch of cartoony 21st century NASA spacemen." Imagine you could just carry around with you a battlemech and play discount MechWarrior whenever you feel like you don't wanna just shoot everyone. So Bethesda polished the turd along with begrudgingly putting in some work to make their new release not look like a reskinned Fallout 476 in the near release gameplay showcases... wonderful. I don't know why but somehow I expected that Starfield will have at least one thing kind of OK, at least it seemed like they are really hard at work with this game, surely the story and gameplay cannot be a failure across the board, and yet here we are, once again the verdict is: back to the drawing board...
What a "story" too, I don't know when I facepalm laughed harder, when I heard that you will get "powers", or when the word "multiverse" registered in my brain. Now that's one hell of a writing team there !
1:15:37 well that's a pretty good demonstration as to why companions are still only good for being packing mules, although the very natural, organic reaction at 48:23 also tells me what you can expect from any kind of interaction with them. For the sequel they really should add the option to choose as a companion a cargo carrying robot that hides if you enter combat and save everyone the trouble.
Bethesda and firearms knowledge, yep nothing seems to have changed in this respect. Oh, and so much for the improved gunplay, it's the same trash from before as far as I can tell. And seeing that you have 1400+ and 1700+ reserve ammunition for that white DMR/LMG looking thing also tells me pretty much everything about the resource managment, the game might as well have health regeneration and infinite ammunition, and stop with the ridiculous charade. And instead of adding bookmarks to the inventory, so once you open it you can click on the letter S for instance, and quickly get to your items that start with S, now you have to jump in and out of multiple inventories, excellent.
Well, thanks for going through with this, it is certainly a very entertaining video. I hope the expansions wash the taste of this out of your mouth, because just looking at this game at times felt bad.

one thing that I never got used to was that stupid XP counter that they decided the best place for it was in the center of the screen, or that some guns have an ammo counter/indicator on them yet the game feels the need to display the ammo again anyway
with the quests you can almost tell when the designer putting it together is less familiar/flexible with the engine. I've had quests unusually play out using the engine's own rules (a giant alien killed a quest giver with nothing on my part to contribute to it) only for the game to decide that this NPC can't die, and then they thanked me the killing the alien that I never even saw until it was dead. Some quests require you to have a certain type of outfit equipped, but then some suggest that you do but then they pedal back on it later in the same dialogue that to suggests to me that line was added once they couldn't get the scripting to work properly.
it took me a while of just skipping dialogue, ignoring companions and weapons to just go around punching people into ragdolls that there's barely any role playing in this game either, the level up screen is just an upgrade menu and because of NG+ i realised the only actual RPG elements of "completing faction quests can lock you out of other factions" is completely thrown out. I imagine later on they'll be a DLC where you break the cycle and actual get an ending, where your character will get to say an outdated meme as their final words.
It's weird that they decided to go with the "25 years in the making" thing yet the final product seems to lack identity after all this time. Maybe they meant it in the same way as I could pull out a game design document I made in college and call it "12 years in the making", it doesn't really mean anything.

They are the same people who have thousands of hours in a game that can be completed in a few hours.

And I remember back in 2003 all of the games that had you play in cities that felt absolutely massive, Jack and daxter 2, Any final fantasy city, KOTOR.
And then I also remember Bethesda touting that new Atlantis is the biggest city they've ever made. But in reality its only the biggest by maybe a few square yards. And absolutely microscopic in size for any space faring civilizations capitol.

But compare Night City to the sprawl of Mirrors edge, or Deus Ex. My point is that we're not actually leveraging hardware and technology advancements to make bigger cities work better. The cowboy faction did it for me, above all the galaxy-famous "Rangers". There is the option to ask how many Rangers are out there: 12. No, not 12'000 which is a small amount of people when it comes to a multi-planet civilisation, no.....TWELVE! Then it became clear to me, those rangers are the minutemen from Fallout. This might work in a post-apocalyptic depopulized world, but not in a world where you supposed to believe that there are huge cities and many colonized planets. You are also supposed to believe that the cowboys who have barely nothing but some wild west huts have had a stalemate in a war against the pendant of the United Federation of Planets. I uninstalled the game when the sheriff of this cow-village came to me and asked if i could investigate whats going on near Miss Wilsons (or whatever name she had) farm.."ok", i thought, "lets go have a look, where is her farm?". It turns out, her farm is on another moon. Whats the population of all new colonies together? 80 or so? This is so dumb, the whole universe of Starfield makes no sense at all. Oh, and there is nothing to explore as mankind is already in EVERY system you visit and on every planet, there are already manmade installations, populated by pirates yes, but it means that other humans already found it before you did. You don't "discover" Paris f.e. when you drive there by train, seems there is simply no wikipedia or google in the future where you can simply search for whats in system xy. That was enough, not worth for any more painfull loading screens for that.

One of the few times pre ordering a game didn't bite me in the butt. I bought the ultimate edition for early access and thankfully because of it, I got a refund with 20hours played still in early access. Dunno if that is cause of Australian consumer protection laws or steam knew this game was a dog and was just giving everyone refunds.

What has battered me ever since the lunch of Starfield Is the fact that they put so much attention to going into new game plus, which naturally nullifies any consequences of your actions and at the same time they make so many - not even essential - NPCs not killable. I don't understand this approach because they've basically created a game where you wouldn't even need to do any quests in order to finish it, while at the same time boxing you in on every occasion. Starfield literally has more reasons to be like Fallout New Vegas than New Vegas does itself, wtf.

1:40:57 I have a different perception of the persuasion system. At first, I liked the implementation, but when I started leveling up the persuasion perks, the system ended up disappointing me because it becomes incredibly easy. When you have all 4 points in persuasion, it's practically impossible to fail persuasion, and this is mainly due to the rule 'If your last persuasion attempt was successful, then you can continue persuading the NPC.' In simple terms, this means that you always have to choose the green option. The green option with all 4 perk points has almost a 95% chance of success. If the NPC requires 8 points to be persuaded, you just have to select the option that gives you +1 eight times, and since you never fail that option, you can repeat it indefinitely.

Excellent review as always, even better than your Fallout 4 review! I had very low expectations about Starfield to begin with, and when I saw other people playing the game, it only confirmed my predictions that it would be a bland and boring game. It seems that Bethesda took the worst aspects of their past games, i.e. the repetitive exterior and dungeon designs, and put it into Starfield without making it any better. It's a shame also that they still can't make any seamless transitions, whereas Gothic 1 was able to load everything continuously and it came out before Morrowind. I thought that this game may have been Outer Worlds but bigger and not written as well. But I guess it seems that Outer Worlds was the better space RPG after all, though that may not be saying much.
With all that said, good luck on your next reviews! I'll certainly be looking forward to your reviews of the DLCs for Amid Evil and Ion Fury as well as your full Cyberpunk 2077 review.

It's not *massively* improved over FO4's building but it's definitely a bit more refined. The overhead camera for the outpost building in Starfield helps a fair bit, as does the fact that you're not having to build around existing structures right from the get-go.
Like most things in Starfield, however, the controls for it are clunky and the interface is terrible, so I can see why you'd get pissed off at it.

    • @MaMastoast
      @MaMastoast Рік тому +3

@@DWTerminator Aside from the absolutely inexcusable ui/controls, its also just extremely limited compared to fallout 4.
You can't place foundations, you cant place walls, you cant populate your base beyond a few people, you cant accurately rotate anything, the snapping system is aggressive to the point of it being something you are constantly fighting rather than it actually being helpful.
I mean yea fallout 4 could be frustrating aswell, but atleast I could build cool stuff with it.. starfield is even more frustrating and you barely have any creative freedom... Like how am I supposed to build a cool base when all I can do is place a bunch of premade buildings in a field?
Sorry for venting, but man.. Who on earth playtested this thing?

    • @DWTerminator
      @DWTerminator  Рік тому +2

To be fair: the vast majority of planets don't have breathable atmospheres. Going with sealed habs rather than standard buildings just makes more sense.
The snap-to system was janky as hell in FO4 so they overcompensated on it with Starfield. It works better now but the controls are still clunky, hence the feeling that it's overly aggressive. As I mentioned in the video, switching to gamepad when building helps out quite a bit. Keyboard object rotation is frustratingly imprecise. It's much easier to do that with the gamepad. Why they did it this way, I don't really know.
How are you supposed to build a cool base? You aren't. As I mentioned, it's abundantly clear that outposts only exist to produce resources for your crafting and research.
As for who playtested it, I have no idea. They clearly didn't give Bethesda the feedback they actually need, though.

    A few questions:
    1. Is this game straight up unplayable without the UI pointing every enemy out with their healthbar? I can't see jack in some parts of the video. That seems like a massive art direction issue.
    2. With the evergreen topic of Bethesda vs Obsidian, there's been a few discussions comparing Starfield to The Outer Worlds. Considering what you said about this game and how utterly average if disappointing TOW is to the point you weren't even going to properly review it, do you think the games are comparable at all despite their disparate differences?

Agree with everything you said. Also, have to love how many story lines were direct rip offs from other ip's. Touching the artifact gives visions- Mass Effect, get to the center of the galaxy/unity - No Man's Sky, Vae Victus living in the basement prison (if you let him live) giving you missions to go after other bad guys - Blacklist, Hunter - Agent Smith clone, planet full of clones of old Earth leaders - og Star Trek, lost pre-warp colony ship - a couple of Star Trek episodes, the whole Freestar Rangers questline - episode of Justified, etc. And so many others.
How about not having an inventory system or even sorting the inventory on your Outposts so you have to go box to box searching for your resources. The game could have been a good game, you could see the grand vision they originally had but for some reason they truncated story lines, dumbed things down or just abandoned ideas. Whether it was bad management, incompetence or laziness, or all of the above, we'll never know but something that could have been memorable turned out meh.
