    Today on The Chopping Block, our special guest is the banana. One of the most common questions I get from people is: Are bananas good for me? While bananas have great health benefits, they do have a higher sugar content compared to other fruits. Bananas are teetering on the edge of the chopping block.
    Negatives of Bananas:
    1. Bananas contain a lot of sugar, very little protein, and no healthy fat.
    -1 medium-sized banana contains 27 grams of carbohydrates-14 grams of which are sugar-only 1 gram of protein, and 0 grams of fat.
    -Bananas, when eaten alone, may affect blood sugar levels.
    -Bananas are higher on the glycemic index, so they tend to affect insulin and blood sugar more than other fruits, such as berries.
    Benefits of Bananas:
    1. Bananas are one of the most potassium-rich foods in the world.
    2. Bananas are rich in electrolytes to help fuel the cells.
    -1 banana contains 500 milligrams of potassium and 32 milligrams of magnesium.
    3. Bananas are lower on the glycemic index and have a lower amount of carbohydrates than whole grains.
    4. Bananas are a great source of fiber.
    5. Bananas are real food-unprocessed and unhybridized.
    Conclusion:
    -For people who are trying to lose weight or have digestive issues or sensitive blood sugar, bananas are not the best option but still better than whole grains.
    -For people who are athletic, lean, and healthy, bananas are a great option.

    I just heard on the radio the other day, about a guy who got into the Guiness Book as being the oldest man, he just died at 112. When they interviewed him a few weeks earlier, he said that he believes he has lived so long and so totally healthy by eating a banana for breakfast every day. But he did not say what he ate the rest of the day.

    I got rid of wheat, pasta, white rice, and sweets. So I now eat a banana with organic no sugar peanut butter as my sweets substitute. Also I love oranges with pistachios and pecans for a desert, and blueberries heated a tiny bit to get soft with pecans or cashews has been my treats since going mostly no sugar or Low sugar impact. I felt awesome in just a week. It's been just over 2 weeks now and I will not give in to sugary foods or junky processed food. YES to Bannanas! 110% for me because I don't eat junk sweets or bread anymore.

    I’m regurgitating a comment I saw on another video. “How many fat people do you know who have eaten too much fruit” I don’t know of any. You’d think it would be common sense. Ever since I started eating 3-4 bananas a day, I’ve never felt better. I’ve maintained my weight and my digestion is night and day different.

    Dr. Axe, how do you not know that the Banana is NOT the highest dose of Potassium "on the planet." An average baked sweet potato with skin provides 542mg (15% DV) of potassium; while the Potassium in an Average Banana is
    358mg (10% DV) . Shine-On! :-)

    This is definitely a case by case matter. Like Dr. Axe said IF your blood sugar is sensitive you may need to use caution. I did a little experiment yesterday because of the mystery surrounding bananas and whether or not people should be drinking smoothies because they are high in sugar. My fasting blood sugar was 84 and after drinking a smoothie that contained 1 1/2 frozen bananas, close to 1 1/2 cups of frozen berries, spinach, avocado and water my blood sugar was 106 1 & 2 hours later.

  • @DieHumanless

    *shrug* I've lost over 200 pounds in 2 1/2 years and bananas are almost always a daily food, as are white potatoes (with skin). However, fruit juice, soda, candy, standard cookies, etc., were mostly cut from my daily diet. All about common-sense. Don't intake too much of any energy source, whether it be carbs, fats or proteins. Balance it out, eat proper portions, move more, and wallah, weight loss. The only notation I agree with is if someone has serious blood sugar issues, then, yes, bananas are probably not wise to consume often.

    • @marconlo38367
      @marconlo38367 8 років тому

      What? Where? Theres NO such thing as "Curing" diabetes, If he did reverse diabetes then he'd be on the cover of every magazine and receive a Nobel peace price, but he's not, because he cant.
      "Curing Diabetes" is what Uneducated UA-camrs and want you to believe. You can't cure a Pancreas. Diabetes is a progressive disease, it only gets worse. You can put a bandaid on it by eating less sugar, but theres no healing a pancreas.

    • @zukodude487987
      @zukodude487987 8 років тому +5

      +Marc Nello It is no cure, but it is the solution for type 2 diabetics. Type 2 diabetes is based on insulin sensitivity which happens when animal protein and fat prevent from sugar leaving your blood. Fruits improve insulin sensitivity and the lack of animal products will allow your body to respond better to insulin again and thus stabilizing blood sugar levels again.

    • @marconlo38367
      @marconlo38367 8 років тому

      No. There is no cure for Type 2 diabetes, just as there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. T2 also comes from a pancreas that has been damaged from too much sugar (aka carbing the F up will do it). Diabetes is progressive, it doesnt "heal", it only gets worse. You can treat it, but there is no cure.

    Bananas good , misinformation bad, bad, bad. The problem most people have is that they won't do anything about their condition until the you know what has hit the fan. I'm always amazed at the reaction people have when they hear my answer to their question about loosing weight. You can eat about anything, and that is if you can't find the will to eliminate certain foods, but and this is important mind the portions, as long as you do some excercise you'll be able to maintain a healthy weight and overall life. No big secret, no weird or extreme diets, no need for supplements as vitamin pills or whatever. Our body is like a beautiful machine and as such it needs fuel to run well. You don't put diesel if your car runs on gasoline and viceversa. Worst, we treat our bodies, our digestive system, like a trash compactor pouring all sorts of junk expecting nothing bad will come off it. The sooner, earliest we develop good eating habits along with a less sedentary life style the least health problems we'll have. If you can walk the distance do it, ditch the car. Certain foods if you can't eliminate have a treat just don't overdo it . Little steps, be moderate and don't give up.

    I don't really believe that you know what you are talking about. The "fructose" factor in a banana which represents 27% is actually made of INULIN and its derivative Fracto-oligosaccharides and CANNOT affect sugar level in the blood!!! Inulin is a term applied to a heterogeneous blend of fructose polymers found widely distributed in nature as plant storage carbohydrates. Oligofructose is a subgroup of inulin, consisting of polymers with a degree of polymerization (DP) ≤10. Inulin and oligofructose are not digested in the upper gastrointestinal tract; therefore, they have a reduced caloric value. They stimulate the growth of intestinal bifidobacteria. They do not lead to a rise in serum glucose or stimulate insulin secretion. Please be specific if you need to "chop" information though it would be hard going against your American genetic lust after exposure!

      Sugar from fruit is fructose, which *is* the same as sugar from refined, processed foods. Have you ever read the labels to see what kind of sugar they put in that stuff? Every cell in your body can use glucose for energy, but only your liver can break down fructose. Fructose is a risk factor in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Stop the irrational "car hating" labeling please. Don't ignore context. This video said the pros of bananas are high potassium and magnesium, and the cons are sugar. I was comparing bananas to avocados. They are even higher in the "pros" for bananas, and they don't have the cons for bananas. How does that make me an irrational carb hater?

    Watching this as I eat a banana, lol. Many keto and carnivore doctors think all fruit is evil. Talk about extreme polarization! Too much meat isn't healthy either. Never saw anyone get fat on bananas, by the way.

    • @rayhanes1347
      @rayhanes1347 8 років тому

      Sira Mea Are you trolling? Unless you're a linebacker and wanna put on more weight, Yea. Eat peanut butter and bananas at the same time, hell, add some chocolate in to seal the deal.

    • @siramea
      @siramea 8 років тому

      ray hanes no, I'm honestly interested in the science behind of the comment, it contradicts everything I have been told. I am losing weight (45 lbs so far) and see a dietitian every 3 months to help me stay on track. I have been told not to be scared of bananas, I can an eat 1 or even 2 a day (not at the same time), and that eating it with healthier proteins and/or fats lowers the GI rather than just eating a banana on its own.

    • @rayhanes1347
      @rayhanes1347 8 років тому

      Sira Mea truth is you can eat 5 bananas a day, long as it fits in your macros for the day, keeping u in a calorie deficit. Bananas are a fast burning carb which means they are are high on the glycemic index, which means they are more likely to spike your insulin, which tells your body to store fat. We don't want that, especially late in the day, so I consume bananas only when my body is starving for a meal and that's only right after waking up (fasting) or a brutal work out. Far as the peanut butter, I've never done that after a work out unless I was bulking. In your case I'd wait at least an hour to eat after leaving the gym if fat loss is what u want.

    I searched for bananas on youtube today because a I have a few banana trees in my yard that are about to give forth vast amounts of "apple bananas". They are smaller and they taste different and I am now wondering if they are very nutritionally different. Do you know? Are apple banana's better for you than cavandish?

  • @AlkalineDietHealth
    @AlkalineDietHealth 8 років тому

    Oh dear. Dr Axe, I like your videos but this is such incorrect info - bananas make you slim. If you're not getting simple fruit sugars (high-nutrient calories, great brain and body fuel) then where are you getting your calories from? 'Good' fats? Refined oils? Bread? McDonald's? 'Lean animal protein'? - AKA heart disease, diabetes and obesity accelerators. I am an ultrarunner and without bananas I would flag so badly! We all need high-quality energy every day. The humble banana provides just that. I meet so many people who are afraid of fruit and eating lots to get the calories in and are overweight, undernourished and have all sorts of health issues. They are eating lean meat and healthy oils like their doctor tells them and they have about as much energy and vitality as a dead slug. Please look into Dr Neal Barnard's excellent work. God bless you

    • @cathridge
      @cathridge 8 років тому +2

      You need to pay attention. He is healthy and active and uses it for fuel when runs. What he said is if you have sugar or weight issues, avoid them because of their glycerin index.

    • @musicbcwalk
      @musicbcwalk 8 років тому +2

      cathridge He is completely wrong about that. Studies have shown natural sugar (not refined, and still attached to phyto nutrients and fiber) has zero detrimental effects on diabetics. Which is why doctors reverse diabetes and heart disease with whole food plant based diets.
