Completely wrote, composed, produced and obviously performed this song all by himself when he was still a teenager. Amazing, it’s the perfect pop song
I think you're completely forgetting about Andrew Ridgely.
@@utubnagain not to mention that the saxophone piece that is the main aspect of the song that gets sampled always was performed by Steve Gregory.
Also, George was born in June 1963 and the song was released July 1984. I have no idea when/how long it took him to create the song (a few months to several years?), but even if it took more than 13-months, a good chunk of the time occurred when he wasn't a teenager.
@@utubnagain Oh right…..all the credits I’ve ever seen for this song only ever say George Michael. In fairness I’m sure there were some Wham! songs where Andrews name on the credits was generous
@@stevesmith4600 He wrote the song aged 17.
@@RedDevil_Joe "Careless Whisper" is a song by the English singer George Michael. It was written by Michael and Andrew Ridgeley of Wham! and was released on 24 July 1984 on the Wham! album Make It Big. The song features a prominent saxophone riff, and has been covered by a number of artists since its first release
Rip George. This song has such a catchy chorus. Its a huge hit and everyone knows this song. The saxophone is not from the baker street song. Its one of the most famous openings of any song lol.
The two songs with the strongest sax melody. Both instant classics. I can understand why someone who hasn't spent enough time with both would make that mistake.
@@robertreichle1 Yep! Another great song with an instantly recognizable sax is You belong to the city by Glenn Frey.
@@andrewawakened628 Don't forget Bob Seger Turn The Page.
@@calrowles9790 yes you belong to the city and turn the page have great sax
@@andrewawakened628 Candy Dulfer and Dave Stewart - Lily Was Here (1989)
George Michael wrote this worldwide #1 smash while still in high school and working part-time in a restaurant. Age 17 or 18. The classic, signature sax part was an original creation in his head right from the start of the writing process, and was worked on carefully through several demos until the completed record was finally released in 1984.
He was still in school, so 16 and under in the UK.
@@anthb3377 people are in high school at 17 and 18 to so
@@kimson305 In the 80's in the UK you left school at 16. Anything after that would be called College. George started writing this when he was (I believe) 15. Andrew also helped.
@@TheNightBadger And in that College they teach you how to spell pendatic
@@chrisrobbo1974 _"And in that College they teach you how to spell pendatic"_ - Maybe you should have gone then?
This and 'Baker Street' are arguably the 2 most recognisable sax riffs of the last fifty years - that's why it sounds so familiar. But though these songs only came out about 6 years apart from each other, both are completely original.
And Glenn Freys You belong to the city.
@@briang6040 great call here!

I love the Sax solo on Foreigner - Urgent
'Guilty feet have got no rhythm' is one of the greatest lyrics ever...
Truly..
Yes indeed
He wrote this when he was 17, it's one of my most favorite songs.
This song was co written by andrew Ridgeley. It was a favour to george by andrew just prior to whams break up. George had created the original concept from the age of 17 and had written provisionally the main lyrics but then put the song to one side to work on it later for wham. But struggled to find the time with touring to finish it.just after confirming the bands break up and planning his solo career he finally started work on it again . But was still not totally happy with it and so asked andrew to co write on it.
good fact i didnt know he wrote this song so young.
@@christopherrobertson8098 George had a solo number 1 with this in the summer of 1984, 2 years before Wham split. It was written in 1981, and had been said by George in interviews that he wrote the sax part on a bus going to work, the he and Andrew worked on it together. It was demo'd in 1982 and was sung during their 1983 tour, and after recording it in the USA produced by Jerry Wexler, George decided to re-record it back in the UK using Wham's usual musicians
Favourite. English.
@@williawilkes1036 I play the saxophone solo and the song rip George this is masterpiece
George Michael wrote this song when he was 17 and he wrote the saxophone part first in his mind before all fragments were put together into that beautiful song.
The combination of the melody and the beauty and richness of George Michaels voice makes this simply a masterpiece of song. Doesn't get any better!
One of the most memorable songs in history.
Love this song! It’s all George’s writing. The song , and the music. Not a sample. Do more George Michael, can’t go wrong. He’s amazing. RIP!
You guys give such fun reactions . Thanks .❤️
According to George when he wrote this song at 17 he had no relationship experience so this was him writing a story! Quite amazing really!
He passed away on Christmas 2016, and was famous by the song "Last Christmas". By the way, he and a colleague from the group Wham rewrote all the copyrights from the sale of that single to hungry children from Ethiopia. He didn't earn much at that time, and the single sold several million copies. He was considered the new singer of the group "Queen", after his performance at the concert held in honor of Freddie. Numerous stars performed on that occasion, but everyone agreed that no one sang Quinn's songs like him. He modestly refused to be the singer of the group, believing that there is no substitute for Freddie. George Michael has left millions of dollars to humanitarian organizations that help children and people suffering from cancer and AIDS. He was also one of the producers of the original band single from 1984, thanks to which more than 20 million dollars were collected for hungry Ethiopians. During his life, George Michael secretly committed great humanitarian deeds non-stop:
1. He donated $ 18,000 for in vitro fertilization to a complete stranger
Deal Or No Deal TV host Richard Osman hosted a woman who wanted to raise $ 18,000 for in vitro fertilization. By chance, Michael watched the show and secretly paid her money the next day.
2. He founded an organization that fights for the rights of children with disabilities
He founded the "Trust", which offers grants to people with disabilities and children with special needs.
3. He worked in a shelter for the homeless
He volunteered in shelters for the homeless and asked the employees of those institutions not to tell anyone about his deeds.
4. He gave millions of dollars to the Childline service
The founder of the Childline telephone service, which is available to British children 24 hours a day and can be contacted by anyone under 19 who has any life problem, revealed that Michael gave all the money earned from the hit "Jesus To A Child" to organization.
"He gave us millions of dollars and we planned to do a big concert in his honor on the 30th anniversary of its founding and thank him on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of children he helped," said Esther Rancen.
5. He gave hundreds of free tickets to hospital staff in Austria
Michael sent 1,000 free concert tickets to employees of the hospital in Vienna where he was treated for pneumonia in 2011.
"I would like to thank all the doctors and nurses who saved my life and all my fans for their love and support," he said at the time.
6. He donated the proceeds from "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" to a children's humanitarian organization and the AIDS Foundation
The really beautiful thing, is that he did all this and never wanted anyone to know. He had no desire for praise. Just to do good and help people.
That's a rare thing.
Yes a very humble Humanitarian 💖💫💖
George Michael doesn’t sample. He’s an amazing singer, songwriter, producer, and plays damn near every instrument you can name.
He'd sampled a few times. 'Fast Love' has samples from 'Forget Me Nots' and 'AJ Scratch'. 'Too Funky' has samples from 'Somebody Else's Guy' and 'I Am Not Trying To Seduce You'. 'Freedom 90' has samples from 'Funky Drummer'.
@@luckyboy4766 also killer/papa was a rolling stone
George does indeed sample or use elements of other songs. Fastlove is a case in point as it uses Patrice Rushen's forget me nots in the song. He also did a few covers too.
One more: "Shoot the Dog" samples the Human League's "Love Action"
Skin flute lol
You haven't lived until you felt this song
This video always gave me Miami Vice and Caribbean vibes-Water views, sea planes and boats--and Brad is right--Miami, and south Florida in general, has a lot of 80’s architecture. That’s when that area became big--partly because it was the booking 80’s economy but also because of the drug money flowing through it
It’s so interesting to see you guys review songs we have heard a million times on the radio. You couldn’t turn on the radio in the 80s without hearing this. I like it better now that I don’t hear it all the time!
You can't turn it on now without hearing it!
Definitely not just a sample. That sax line is from this song if you've heard it somewhere else. Baker Street is simply another famous song that heavily features a saxophone (even more) prominently.
it's a sax, that's all lol.
Legend!! One of the best male vocalists ever!!
He was the BEST!
@@debralynn9678 nah
Give George's 'Killer/Papa Was A Rolling Stone' a listen, his mash of those two great songs kicks and always gets me moving.
George Michael is one of pop/ rocks greatest vocalists. It's a joy to listen to him sing.
If you haven't heard "One More Try" you've still not treated yourself to George Michael's best song and studio performance.
Its not a sample, its a George Michael original
This song created the term "sexy sax". George Michael is so underrated, the guy was incredibly talented.
"This is Gerry Rafferty- Baker street!" had me in tears. Just because it's a saxophone doesn't mean it's a sample :-)
One of the best songs ever
He wrote this song when he was about 19 yrs old. He also produced the track. Very talented beautiful man.
This is one of those song that never let go with you once you heard it the first time! When i first heard it back in 1984 i wasn't like blown away still it got stuck in the back of the head and when i got older and heard it with "new ears" so to speak i realized it's a really great song.
No this is different from Baker Street, this is completely George’s original song 😂
Yeah, not every iconic sax riff in a pop song is the same!
Which reminds me that you guys should probably listen to "Lilly was here", which has another great sax part.
I prefer Baker Street's sax too!
The best voice of my generation. George had it all.
Timeless! I've always loved this song.
RIP - George Michael. I love this song and many more. Rock on Brad & Lex
Yeah! I love" Heal the pain".
Boy genius, beautiful man, musical perfectionist, heartbreaking loss. 💔
The original Art Deco movement originated in the 1920s and was then popularized in the 1930s, when a lot of Miami Beach was developed. The style was popular in the 1950s, as well, known then as "mid-century modern" and updated with more chrome and more of a machine look to it. Those old hotels were falling into disrepair throughout the 1970s and '80s, but a preservation movement sprang up and many of them were restored. There may have been some imitation Art Deco buildings built in the '80s, but the original ones on Miami Beach were built much earlier.
You tell 'em
Great choice guys....may I suggest "Father Figure"?.....you won't regret it...great song!
That entire album is great.
Legend and icon right here! I LOVE LOVE LOVE GM. I was devastated when he passed. My sister had to console me like I actually knew him LOL. What a loss.
Im 31 and love music and something in every genre. And this here is a masterpiece. Great music os timeless and this song here is. Every time i hear it im singing along lol 😂. Rip 🙏 George
RIP George Micheal. He was a lovely man & gifted singer/songwriter.
Brilliant voice, brilliant song.
RIP GM.
a beautiful exotic song that will live forever RIP GEORGE
How are we not talking about how there just grooving together without even looking at one a other!❤
Did you see Deadpool? That’s where you know the sax…..is the credits at end. Little cartoon Deadpool playing sax…..
The saxophone/instrumental has been sampled but this is the original. Great reaction guys, to a great record!!
Pure George Michael...magic. 👍🏽
Missing him, RIP George. 🥺❤
At the age of 16, this is one of many songs that played on MTV in the background while with my first. Times were so different back then. Mom at work, Dad bowling. It allotted the time. What they (parents) didn't know. RIP Mom 🕯 and Dad🕯
He wrote this song at 17. Such a talent and a great voice.
This was on the Wham! album "Make it Big" . That whole album is amazing!
this song is so hardwired into me after decades of listening to it now , will always be one of my favourites
George Michaels is one of the best singers.. he passed away to young, i love all his songs including his time with Wham...
I LOVE this song and George Michaels. NUFF SAID.
Not Baker Street but that one and this one are two of the most iconic sax lines in popular music history
Don't forget the sax solo in Foreigner's "Urgent".
@@isaackovitz4791 no doubt! I’ll add Waiting On a Friend by the Stones and Supertramp’s The Logical Song too
I'd also like to add hazel O'Connor's " will you" :)
Also, maneater by Hall and Oates
Or Rio by Duran Duran
Why is it, that, most of the tortured & sensitive souls, have the most powerful & memorable lyrics, & then, have to leave us so early *RIP George Michael, you are so missed by all who loved you and your music!!!* 💖💖💖
1984...good yr...great song👍
"This is Gerry Rafferty Baker Street" - sacrilegious on both fronts
He was such a genious
And also check out his Wham years before he went solo .. "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" (My Personal Favorite) R.I.P. Legend!! What a Voice!!!❤
What a gorgeous song, and perfect lyrics. George Michael was such a talent. As good of a voice as anyone.
I have a friend who used to go regularly to George's dad's Cypriot restaurant in North London in the 70s. George's dad would say "George is still doing the singing but I hope he settles down a gets a proper job". Just as well he didn't!
It always tears me up at the end. I was in grade 5 i believe when this came out so didnt like it cause i m not into slow music and didn’t understand romance, today i love it. My class at the time was majority Greek at the time like George and they loved him so much, later I realised it was because he was Greek too they had a special bond with him.
This was a big prom/dance song back in the day.
yes, and i'd always be sitting at the side on my own watching the couples dance!
correct this very much seems like a dance prom song
This song is pure 1980's sex appeal, and I love it. No one quite like George Michael
Can't find anything wrong with this song! It's near perfect!
Yea it is
When this song came out in the 80’s it flew to number one George was famous for his band WHAM then went solo. The sax is not sampled but I get the Baker Street reference they both are incredible sax performances
Do 'Everything She Wants'. That's probably my favorite George Michael song.
Yes!!
I was literally thinking of this song, but for the life of me couldn't remember the name. Thanks!
‘Everything she wants’ is so layered.
Oh yeah! And live is still better!
YEEES, Everything she want's defenitely with official video.
Look how happy she is🥰
He did not even look at her for a second I’d be grinning biting my lips looking at my girl smiling to a sexy song like this
This song will no never go out of style. Just a classic heartbreak song.
No this song is George all day including the saxophone
He wrote, produced, and sang this as like a 16-17yr old! 🐐
Is it me, or is the younger millennial generation so jaded and full of apathy that so many of them are unable to feel, much less appreciate, the emotion of a song's lyrical content.
George Michael had a range of sounds, all of them fantastic, but his slow jams are fantastically beautiful. Please listen to his songs "A Different Corner" and "Kissing a Fool" both are very moving, but in very different ways . Really, anything you choose by him is fabulous. Oh, you MUST also check out his duet with Aretha Franklin, "I Knew You Were Waiting". You will 💗💗💗!
One of my favorite songs of all time!
I'd call this 80s soul
Love both of you so much, it's so refreshing to watch you two.
Brad: 🤨
Lex: 🙂😀😃😄
You guys seem like you have a great dynamic together!
The sax part isn't a sample. It was written specifically for this song. It might "feel" like the sax part in "Baker Street" -- but that's simply from the shared style of the two different sax players.
An absolutely beautiful song.
:) The two of you were perfectly synchronized swaying to this. At Christmastime, its for sure that you will hear George singing Last Christmas. The movie with that title features all George Michael songs.
Please do One More Try by George Michael. His voice is incredible
That beautiful sax belongs to George...but others have borrowed it. ❤️
This is actually Wham even though Andrew Ridgeley is not in the video. George Michael was the lead singer of the duo. Wham has a ton of bangers: Last Christmas, Credit Card Baby, Everything She Wants, The Edge of Heaven and Wake Me Up Before You Go Go just to name a few!
No its not Wham , it was Georges first solo single ,Wham was still going at this point ,they split in 86.
@@chrisbayliss3532 Careless Whisper is on Wham's Make It Big album!
🙏 ✌ ❤ 🎶 🌎 👏 George
That sax is iconic (though, no, it's not Baker Street; it does have a similar sort of magic, I'll admit). This whole song is so smooth.
This used to be played at the end of every school disco back in the 80s. Weirdly around smooch time 😆
Don’t let the sun go down on me , with Elton John is a must ! Talk about singing ! Incredible
This song gives me the feels! Growing up in the 80s in Miami this song was a big deal and if you had a little break up or a crush or some thing, this was the song that you sat in your room and listen to over and over again.
You guy gotta do Wham - Everything She Wants. Written by GM-such a great pop song lyrically and musically.
George has many great songs but "different corner" and "they won't go when I go" will defenetly give you chills.
They Won't Go When I go" was written by Stevie Wonder and Yvonne Wright and first recorded by Stevie . It's a great song and I think I prefer George's version.
I am a metalhead but that song is my guilty pleasure song. There is also an extended version that's really cool
This song was huge when I was in HS and incredibly ground breaking for its time. The girls were especially swooned by it. Lol RIP George.
This song was released in 1984. "Baker Street" was released in 1978.
FWIW, I was just singing this in the kitchen before checking out what was going on in YT. ;)
I do love me a bit of George ❤️🏴
The sax isn’t a sample but 100% Careless Whisper grown!
Every time I'm surprised that you haven't heard a particular song, I have to remind myself that I'm probably the age of your parents. I'm still surprised you've made it this far in life without hearing Careless Whisper. I'm actually guessing you have heard it in part, based on your reaction to the sax part. It's not from anything else, but it has been used in countless TV shows and movies (ever seen Deadpool?)
Probably the most talented singer, songwriter ever.
Love this song he is very missed RIP
she was liking this, smile whole time lol
You should do George Michaels “One more try”. My fav ❤️.
Wife and I danced to this one song on Christmas eve a few years ago. Next day George passed away.
Loving that sway 🤣👍
Such a beautiful voice
His real name was Georgios Kyriakos Panayiotou, he was a Greek who lived in England. One of the best musicians of all time, so talented, so unic and a great person.
"Everything she wants" is a great George Michael song.
