Holding Back the Years is amazing. One of my all-time favorites. Nobody sings like Mick Hucknall of Simply Red. Some great trumpet work in their too. He wrote the song when he was 17. It’s about his mother leaving when he was little and how missing her affected his childhood. Watch the original music video, not one of the live performances.

Also listen to "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits. It's a song about the horrors of war. Slow and haunting music but with that trademark guitar sound.

Holding Back the Years is a fantastic song, amazing vocal. Another great song by Simply Red is "If You Don't Know Me By Now." And, Dire Straits can do no wrong, great choice!

You guys should check out the live version of this song from "Alchemy Live". Mark Knopfler who sings and plays lead guitars goes off and Terry Williams on the drums equally brings it. The song is very recognizable compared to the studio version but really cranks it up in terms of performance and dynamics.
Thanks for that. I never saw the Alchemy Live version before. It was fantastic. I like the Wembly 85 version a bit better but that Alchemy totally turns up the heat to 11.
The guitarist Mark Knopfler is one of the most proficient guitarist of all time. Check out their song Money For Nothing (and check out the meaning of the song afterwards lol).
I'm so glad you guys loved this song!! The guitar skill possessed by Mark Knopfler is un real..... A musician called 'Leo Moracchioli' does heavy metal covers of popular songs from other genres and his version of this song is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 I would also recommend you check out 'Walk of Life' & 'Money for Nothing' live with Eric Clapton, Sting & Phil Collins
A very British band I love. 'Brothers in Arms ' is really worth listening . About the loss of your brother in war. Played at many ,many funerals of those who lost their lives in war . Popular in the USA and UK.
Gentlemen, thank you for your appreciation of this British classic. AT ANY party, wedding, christening, birthday, xmas or BBQ -this comes on and EVERYONE hits the dance floor. both young and old. Like all great music from ANY era it's both timeless and ageless !!. ❤❤❤❤
I grew up as a teenager with this band and this song and many others they played. So many good memories of the 80's and friends here locked in this song alone.
Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet, Telegraph Road. Also brilliant Dire Straits songs. Love seeing the younger generation discover such great music. Keep it up guys.
A must is brothers in arms. Mark Knopfler plays this incredible guitar solo with pure emotion through his guitar. The song is based on the Falklands War and the horror and all that bring those in war together.
The way every riff in this song fits together is unbelievable. This song fascinated me as a kid. I couldn't believe how smooth it was and the overall tone was so different to me.
Alchemy Live version of this song is easily in the top 5 greatest live performances EVER. How could you improve on this song? Watch and be blown away fellas.
So glad you guys liked this so good to enjoy your reaction to it. Perfect reaction video. Mark Knophler is a genius you should try more of his music "Brothers in Arms" is a tear jerker.
I'm old enough to be their dad, was born behind the iron curtain and had the same reaction. Great music is timeless and universal. Like so many other things. I looked up, saw them grooving, just like I was and that put a smile on my face. Good stuff.
Mark knopfler is my hero. I love his style of playing. They have tons of other hits out there that are rapidly becoming classics. "Romeo and juliet" "brothers in arms" "money for nothing" (was big on MTV)to name a few. Solid rock band.
Mark Knopfler is still rated as one of the best guitarists , as I'm sure you all ready know. And there was quite the controversy over 'money for nothing' back in the day. The music vid had some really dodgy computer generated graphics that has not aged well AT ALL(and not the reason people got offended over). All of their songs are great songs and well worth a listen and even a re listen. Brilliant musicians.
Phenomenal guitarist , wish you could hear the full version . Thanks for playing this , it's great to see you guys liking and appreciating this era of music ❤
Now that you've seen this version (which is pretty much exactly like the studio version that was played on the radio and became a hit), niw you MUST watch their live performance of this song at Alchemy. It is mind-blowing on every level. Of course Knopfler is stellar, but that drummer! OMG, that drummer goes bananas! (BTW, the "K" in Knopfler is silent. 😊 )
The song faded out before the final awesome solo. But you can still hear enough to appreciate the pure gravitas of the song from what was left. Wicked song.
Right! I was waiting for their reaction to one of the most iconic guitar solos ever. If they liked it up to that, that solo was going to blow their minds.
I'm a 70 yo. Thanks for listening to these old bands. It gives me a chance to hear those I didn't appreciate when I could have. Love you guys...you make me laugh.
This is what MTV used to be! Their hit " Money for Nothing aka I want my MTV " was on repeat in my tape deck for weeks. Also their song "Brothers in Arms" is just a classic. Home Run!!!
Till today no guittarists can perform those solos. So many variants, gigs, effects, technics that no one takes the risk. Those guitar players are legends and still today the best of the entire world. Some of them alive and still playing. Keep listening the good things! Hello from Brazil.
I’ve heard this song all my life….in fact I’ve heard a few Dire Strait songs my whole life and finally got into them a few years back…I realized no matter how many times I’ve heard there stuff it NEVER got old. Mark Knopfler has one of the greatest touches on the guitar!
As a guitar player for life and a huge music nerd this song has always easily been my favorite song of all time, glad you enjoyed it! Just watching knopfler play is a joy because of how effortless it is, unfortunately the video didn't include the outro solo that's so beautiful
If you’d played the first one you would have heard the full guitar solo at the end which is my favorite part of the song. Listen to the studio version sometime to hear the end solo 🔥❤
Dire Straits' album Brothers In Arms has most of the band's big hits on it like "Money For Nothin'" , "So Far Away" "Walk Of Life" and the title track which is beautiful
Y'all, I don't even comment fr, but I've been watching this channel TOO LONG for you to not hear one of the greatest solos ever recorded. I think this deserves a re-do.
The song was based on a real experience. Mark Knopfler went inside a London bar, mainly to get out of the rain. There was hardly anyone there, but a live band was playing their idea of Dixieland jazz. They may have been a decent but not a great band, they did it for the love of getting together and playing music. I particularly like the way Knopfler sings "Way on down south" which makes you think of jazz in the southern USA, but then he sings "Way on down south, London town". Meaning that although London is part of southern England, it's not the "down south" of jazz any more than there's a great jazz band performing. I think that the "down south" is intentional on Knopfler's part, to show that the band he's hearing isn't authentic or great, they're just trying hard. The bar patrons weren't even paying attention to the music, and the young guys playing pool in the corner didn't think a "trumpet playing band" was what they called rock and roll (i.e. it didn't appeal to them). At the end of the show, the band announced themselves as "The Sultans of Swing" which Knopfler felt was pretentious in a humorous way - as they weren't the "sultans" of anything. Although this song has always been well-received, I think some people have been confused in thinking that the song is about the band Dire Straits, which is a rock band. Or they wondered why there are no jazz instruments in the song about a jazz band. It's a song about a wanna-be jazz band calling themselves "The Sultans of Swing", performed by a rock band.
Ah boys youse have to do the “alchemy Live” version of this song - it has about about 4 mins of an extra guitar solo in it and the drummer and the rest of the band vibing to bits - you’ll love it - please trust me. Much love from Ireland 🇮🇪
Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists of all time, easily

You missed the best solo at the end! Great vid! Thank you, gentlemen!
Guys, please do extended live version. Promise, his guitar playing will blow you away.

The live version is the best thing I've ever heard, it is SO awesome!!!
Thanks for that. I never saw the Alchemy Live version before. It was fantastic. I like the Wembly 85 version a bit better but that Alchemy totally turns up the heat to 11.
Dire Straits was just a straight up kick ass band! Nothing fancy. Simply amazing!!!
The guitarist Mark Knopfler is one of the most proficient guitarist of all time. Check out their song Money For Nothing (and check out the meaning of the song afterwards lol).
What an incredible group! No vibe like theirs! I’m so happy you loved Diar Straits!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm so glad you guys loved this song!! The guitar skill possessed by Mark Knopfler is un real.....
A musician called 'Leo Moracchioli' does heavy metal covers of popular songs from other genres and his version of this song is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I would also recommend you check out 'Walk of Life' & 'Money for Nothing' live with Eric Clapton, Sting & Phil Collins
And Industrial Disease
Glad you switched to the live but it got cut off.
Dire Straights is my ultimate favourite band. Holding Back The Years is an amazing song.
The song is based on the Falklands War and the horror and all that bring those in war together.
one of the most beautiful songs ever IMO
The whole song gives me goosebumps, amazing video also.
Absolutley. All time great song.
Yes!
Warms my heart that you found that video. Dire Straits are an amazing band
That song is FORTY FIVE years old. Wow! I remember the first time I heard it in 1978. It's still awesome.
Me too. It was amazing how many of us started playing mouth guitar because of that song. Everyone was doing it.
same here. i got tix via the local radio station and saw them in a bar venue!!! little round tables right in front of them. a highlight of my life. ❤
Dire straits is such an amazing group to dive into. Money for nothing, you and your friend, walk of life and so many other great tracks!
Way back when this first hit the airwaves, it was so fresh & different! Even all these years later, I don’t think it’s ever been replicated 👍
The way every riff in this song fits together is unbelievable. This song fascinated me as a kid. I couldn't believe how smooth it was and the overall tone was so different to me.
Most of the music back then was uplifting...today it's just degrading and dark
Released in 1978 I was 17 My teens were a lot of funin the sweet 7dz
Alchemy Live version of this song is easily in the top 5 greatest live performances EVER. How could you improve on this song? Watch and be blown away fellas.
Agreed. Telegraph Road. Romeo and Juliet. Tunnel of Love. Just fabulous
Agree 100%
100% agree
One of the greatest bands to ever record music 🇮🇪
So glad you guys liked this so good to enjoy your reaction to it. Perfect reaction video. Mark Knophler is a genius you should try more of his music "Brothers in Arms" is a tear jerker.
This song came out my Senior year of high school. We loved it!
I'm old enough to be their dad, was born behind the iron curtain and had the same reaction. Great music is timeless and universal. Like so many other things. I looked up, saw them grooving, just like I was and that put a smile on my face. Good stuff.
One of the first albums I ever bought with my own money . I still think it's something special . Thanks for the memories.
I fully endorse this statement! One of the best live recordings of all time
Not exactly like the studio version. There was no guitar solo
❤
The song faded out before the final awesome solo. But you can still hear enough to appreciate the pure gravitas of the song from what was left. Wicked song.
Right! I was waiting for their reaction to one of the most iconic guitar solos ever. If they liked it up to that, that solo was going to blow their minds.
I'm a 70 yo. Thanks for listening to these old bands. It gives me a chance to hear those I didn't appreciate when I could have. Love you guys...you make me laugh.
One of my all-time favorites! Classic Jazz-Rock. God bless.
Hi Brazil. Your own James Marcal gives it a try. Dial him up.
CLASSIC !!!!! 😍😍😍😍 Love Dire Straits ! They got some great tracks! Someone please build a time machine already ! 😭 1970-1999 omg 😍
A timeless classic. Thank you for sharing. I love seeing how you all react to the music. That’s the best part! 🤩
I’ve heard this song all my life….in fact I’ve heard a few Dire Strait songs my whole life and finally got into them a few years back…I realized no matter how many times I’ve heard there stuff it NEVER got old. Mark Knopfler has one of the greatest touches on the guitar!
Some of the best plucking you’ll ever hear. Knopfler was a genius, could make that guitar sing
He still is genius.
As a guitar player for life and a huge music nerd this song has always easily been my favorite song of all time, glad you enjoyed it! Just watching knopfler play is a joy because of how effortless it is, unfortunately the video didn't include the outro solo that's so beautiful
My Dad loved this group. RIP Dad❤
My husband too. RIP Jim. Love always.
@lindamassie3708 That was my dad's name also .
If you’d played the first one you would have heard the full guitar solo at the end which is my favorite part of the song. Listen to the studio version sometime to hear the end solo 🔥❤
Big facts, final solo is one of the best in guitar history, I’m trying to get them to listen to it in another comment 💪😂
Yes!!!!! I don't think these guys read this far into the comment section but I hope they figure it out because they'll love it ❤️ 😁
Dire Straits' album Brothers In Arms has most of the band's big hits on it like "Money For Nothin'" , "So Far Away" "Walk Of Life" and the title track which is beautiful
Y'all, I don't even comment fr, but I've been watching this channel TOO LONG for you to not hear one of the greatest solos ever recorded. I think this deserves a re-do.
They didn’t do it on purpose. The video they watched didn’t have it on it. They didn’t know, but they sure enjoyed the music.
Missed that solo😢
I'm an old Scottish gal and I can still dance to the old Honkey Tonk. Love you guys. Just saw your video 🏴
You blokes gotta listen to the full version. The last solo is unbelievable!
I’m so happy y’all enjoyed this!!! This makes my ❤happy 😊😊😊
Damn -- you guys picked a video that cuts off the GREAT GUITAR SOLO at the end of the song. Like, that solo is freaking legendary.
Happy for you seeing and hearing this for your first time. The young gentleman nearest the door just drifted off miles away. Brilliant.
i remember when i found dire straits, i was a teenager going through my dads music. was hooked on this on this song ever since, LOVE this song :)
Holding Back the Years by Simply Red is a classic! Definitely look into it!
My dad loved Dire Straits, that is the great Mark Knopfler on vocals. In their 80s prime this band was massive enough to fill stadiums
i love seeing young peolpe enjoying the music of my youth! :)
This is my all-time favorite song with my old time favorite guitar solo. So glad you gentleman enjoyed!
Thank you for that!
Excellent read!
Thanks for this. You are a good nut
Ah boys youse have to do the “alchemy Live” version of this song - it has about about 4 mins of an extra guitar solo in it and the drummer and the rest of the band vibing to bits - you’ll love it - please trust me. Much love from Ireland 🇮🇪
definitely!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Man, their guitar work is tight! I'd forgotten how much I love this song~ thanks for playing this one!! 🥰🥰🥰
