    This was one of the first songs to really address serious mental health issues at a time people were STILL embarrassed by them. It's such a real story and speaks to so many people that it's helped to open the door making mental health a more discussed topic.

      true!

    • @bd4947
      @bd4947 9 місяців тому +11

      I agree that this is a mental health story, in many ways a textbook visual of chronic ptsd and BPD….but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that your comment is made through the a modern day lens and speaks very little to the actual cultural impact the song had on the world at the time…
      It definitely pointed to fan obsession, but if it was a call to mental health awareness, Stan would have never become a word in the dictionary to define what it defines…
      And if it had the cultural impact you’re purporting, the Grammy performance with Elton John wouldn’t have been the massive step it embodied in culture- and the release of the Recovery album would have never signified his return to form as an artist and first steps towards the perception with which the public views em today.
      Less than zero percent of the public was viewing this song as a call to mental health awareness back then, it was still looked at by critics of ‘em as another track dedicated to violence from a homophobic, toxic influence on society… so much so that Elton John offered to perform the song with em at the Grammys bc he though public perception of ‘em
      Was in his words, “bullshit”
      We can certainly reflect on the tracks deeper meaning and larger significance through the lens of the world today, but speaking as if today’s lens had meaning to the realities of the US culture 20 years ago Is simply out of touch with the world at that time.
      Celebrity stalkers were a rising concern at that time, Em was coming off his first major album when he wrote this… it’s the second actual song on the album… (track 2 is kill you, 3. Is Stan) the way I am and the real slim shady don’t come til tracks 7 and 8 despite being the first two singles released from the album… and Kim, which doesn’t come til track 16 was the first song recorded for the album ( and lyrics to Kim were alluded to on more than one occasion in Stan).
      Em was not in a great place with himself , his family, or society when this was written… and he had a long way to drop before intentional themes about mental health could ever be argued were thoughtfully considered a purposeful element of this song…
      Rock Bottom on the other hand…there’s a song that had relevance to em at that time, and had influence in the time…. Esp considering 8 Mile was about to be released

    • @ftbllguy2515
      @ftbllguy2515 9 місяців тому +11

      @bd4947 I mean respectfully I disagree...It's a song about a guy slowly becoming more and more obsessed/parasocially attached as he's losing his mind. I was alive when it was released, and I'm not sure you can speak for the entirety of the "culture" at the time. "Stan" debuted at 51 on the top 100 and went on pretty quickly to become a cultural phenomenon. I'm not sure why you think people's interpretation of Stan had such a direct impact on his career either or why certain things wouldn't of happened the way they did. He was far from downhill or becoming irrelevant as two years later he'd release "the eminem show" an album that I'd argue was much more popular than "recovery". Recovery is titled as such because he was literally on recovery for Vicadin and some other stuff, and was 10 years later, its not relevant in my eyes. Regardless the song ends with Eminem saying the guy should be seeking a mental health counselor in a sincere way. Stan is literally a combination of "stalker" + "fan", and if you don't think stalkers, alcoholics, or people with suicidal ideation have a mental health problem idk what to tell you.

    I know your dad would love to hear Mockingbird, it's the perfect next step in his discography concerning in terms of the progression in this Slim/Em story. You see the reality of his domestic situation behind the exaggerated accounts, and just how tragic, complicated and in ways beautiful it really is. He truly loves his children in spite of his fractured relationship, and wants them to make it through this messy stage in their early lives to become good people, but Eminem has to be a paternal figure from the sidelines, and the song is in many ways showing his hopes and his grief felt during the first two albums, the tragedy he can't express except through Slim.

    Stan's brother at the funeral having dyed his hair and implying he was going down a similar path always freaked me out a bit. Also Stan's reflection haunting Eminem in the window when he's realizing that it was Stan that he heard about the news. I always felt that part was representing that irl the thought of fans doing something like this really haunted him. 😬 It's simplistic perhaps, but those things always got me. For Christmas they should react to the Christmas SNL parody of this song they did with with Pete Davidson 😅 edit: 🤔 the Elton John part might make more sense if he's seen the surprise award performance where Elton and Eminem performed. It's such a sad/beautiful song, I highly recommend it. Great reaction guys.. FYI, the song is a sample from Dido's (pronounced 'Died-oh') own song 'Thank You'. The chorus hook of 'Stan' is actually the opening few lines from Thank You. It was a massive hit in its own right, particularly here in the UK where she was huge in the early 2000's.
    Stan is a great example of how you can take a song and transform it from its original meaning. In Thank You the chorus provides the happy juxtaposition to the depressing nature of the verse lyrics. But take that away and make the depressing part the focus, Eminem then cleverly crafts the story of Stan around it... It is in my opinion one of the greatest uses of sampling in hip-hop history.

    • @MateoMarine
      @MateoMarine Рік тому +7

      Yes, but I'd say "Thank You" rode the coattails of this song. Dido wouldn't have been prominent in the US without Stan.

    • @ibanezman04
      @ibanezman04 Рік тому +41

      @@MateoMarine I disagree, Thank You was already a big hit before Stan. Dido also had a couple other releases in the US both before and after Stan, so I think it's unfair to say she rode the coattails of the song. But regardless of what you think of her and her music, the point was that this is one of the most under appreciated and clever uses of a sample in hip-hop.
