    This is a beautiful pattern! For a fairly new knitter, it is a little scary, but you make it look possible! I am learning so many new things from working your patterns and watching your videos! The photography is wonderful!! Is your husband doing your photography? That makes watching a simple "how to" video so much fun. You are beautiful and such a sweet soul. Ok, I have been a knitter a long time, but not advanced, and recently wanted to exercise the brain and learn to read patterns and to knit more complex and beautiful things. (March 2020 during Covid19) So, this gorgeous shawl caught my eye. I'd like to offer a few observations for those who might like to give this lovely shawl a try. I have not used Chandi's suggested yarn yet, wanted to try out the pattern first. Would love to try it with her gorgeous yarn at some point. Here are a few tips and observations on this pattern Etude No. 5. I felt the written pattern lacks some basic info if it is to be for a beginner knitter wanting to learn more. It's not that hard, and some things may seem obvious, but I'll say it anyway.
    This is a 12-row repeat. The cable is done on row 9, then 3 more rows are done, then start over counting rows again on row 13 as #1. I use a free app stitch counter on my phone which helps a lot. I can easily get the rows mixed up without it, and found it difficult to recount the rows because of the cable.
    I wrote on my printed pattern: Even numbered rows will always begin with a garter edge, and odd numbered rows will always begin with a cable edge. The stitch marker is super important because it is easy to knit too far and then end up with more stitches in the cable section, something I did a couple of times and had to remedy quickly. (I had already started and ripped out several times and try #6 or 7 was looking pretty good, so I continued and just fixed the number of stitches in the cable section to be the proper 13--it doesn't show). Another thing that helped me is to use an end cap on the needle that you are not using while stitching from the cable needle, until you are back to the regular needle. I started out with DPNs, and then switched to a circular needle once the width got to about 7" wide.
    My friend said once that perfection is not the goal, (I guess especially for those of us learning) but that finishing is the goal. I will update if I have more tips. Would love to hear anyone else's experiences with this gorgeous shawl. So far I have about 8" and it is soooooo pretty. I am enjoying the project immensely. I can't wait to see it finished, and I agree with Chandi, this is likely a pattern I"ll use again and again. PS~ I emailed Chandi with some questions, and she is super responsive. :)

    I have a question. When my Grandma taught me to knit, she taught me to knit through the back loop. I've seen many who knit through the front as you do. Does it really make that much difference? The only time I have noticed it making a difference (and it was a HUGE difference) is when doing the Brioche stitch. (It REALLY makes an interesting look. Give it a try!) I was trying to learn it by knitting through the back loop thinking there was no difference. Talk about frustrated! Thanks or all you do!!

    • @ExpressionFiberArts
      @ExpressionFiberArts  5 років тому

      Hi, Cheryl! To reproduce patterns exactly, you'd want to knit through the front loop. However, it doesn't make a HUGE difference most of the time - just a slight visual difference and if you enjoy the look, then I say go for it!

    • @ItsMeCheryl1231
      @ItsMeCheryl1231 5 років тому

      I did! The look I got from doing the Brioche stitch 'backward' really made it look different. Give it a try!

    Help I’m very confused. Is the cable row always the 9 th row? (9, 18, 27,36 etc)? Because that has it alternating ws/rs... I end up with a long yarn on the crossover on the wrong side so it doesn’t work right

    • @ExpressionFiberArts

      Lynne, it's the 9th row of the 12-row repeat. (Not every 9 rows). I hope that helps to clarify! Row 9 is always a right side row.

    • @ExpressionFiberArts
      @ExpressionFiberArts  Рік тому

      Hi Karen, yes, there is. To make it a rectangle just CO as many stitches for the width of your shawl plus 13 sts for the cable border. Then when you start working the project skip the part when you add increases just knit back ad forth without it.
      I hope this makes sense. Please let me know if you have further questions. Enjoy! 💕

      La verdad yo no tengo experiencia como hacerlo.. Pero vi hace poco unos vídeos de una rusa con subtítulos en español.. Seria configurar el vídeo cuando lo vayas a subir.. Tienes bellísimas creaciones tejidas.. Pocas veces me ha tocado ver que hagan cosas como lo que tu haces.. Elegantes, practicas, bonitos diseños y no anticuados, Saludos!!

      Go to her website: www.expressionfiberarts.com/categories/patterns.html, choose the pattern you want, click on it, and order from there. Also, you can go to Ravelry.com, put the name of the pattern in the pattern search, and order from there.
