Nice vid, Kyle! Bob Bowman said on a swimswam podcast that Leon could get much better at breaststroke than he already was, and that his talent in the stroke was a bit of a late discovery. I think he’s gonna CRUSH the 200br record at NCAAs, if he even swims it because this dude could swim damn near everything and be successful. Also, breaking an NCAA record by a WHOLE second at a dual meet is absolutely ridiculous.
marchand is a unicorn of a swimmer imo. at least in the NCAA he's won the pac-12 200 breast, gotten the record in the 2 im and 4 im, and has had some wicked fast splits in freestyle relays as well(sub 1:30 in the 4x2 and 41 low in the 4x1) all that, to say nothing about his LCM times. he could definitely break the 4 im LCM wr and possibly be the third man ever to break 1:55 in the 2 im
Let's not forget that after winning gold in the 200m IM and 400m IM at the world championships in 2022, he also took silver behind Milak in the 200m fly. It runs in the family.
His talent was a bit of a late discovery??? He was an olympic finalist at 18 and his father was silver medalist in the 400m IM at the world championships in 1997.
I was so lucky as to attend this meet, and one of the coolest parts of it was that chase kalisz, and Michael Phelps watched this happen. Kalisz is the guy in the white hoodie on the other side of the pool.
This entire field went clearly under 4 minutes. And he just casually lapped the guy swimming next to him 😂. I have never seen something comparable in a 400 Im at this level!
this is gonna be wild to watch at ncaas, i think he could split 57 on the breast (which in itself would get him to 3:30 low) and be even faster on the free just by hitting taper. world champs is gonna be great too. so much anticipation in the swim world rn
I think he could get under 4:00 LCM. If he gets under 3:29 SCY then he's around 4 seconds better than his PB last year and that's the year he went 4:04 LCM.
I agree. I have been saying that since he swam 4:04 last year. He swam 4:11 the year before in the olympic final at 18 years old. His progression is amazing.
The only question is whether Marchand waits until Paris to break Phelps’s 4IM record, or takes it this year. And to think 4:16 took the gold medal in Tokyo! 😂
I think at the very least he can approach 4:00. I think he will improve in the fly and free but he’s really gonna have to find a way to squeeze more time out of his breaststroke and really push the back.
@@EricAngle Thanks. Not as slow as I thought. But nobody’s coming for Phelp’s record, even so. Now, it’s just a matter of time, and not much, before the GOAT has no more individual world records! 😱

What just happened? It's January. How is this remotely possible?? And did y'all count his strokes on the breast and free legs? What on Earth?
@Sockwell excellent. I did hockey, and basketball announcing on large market radio, but never at a swim meet. Probably swimming 22 years of my life made me want to stay away for awhile. Lol
Very impressive to do this at a dual meet in season. @Kyle Sockwell @Seth Aldrich and others, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this potentially unpopular opinion. IMO it's a shame college swimming doesn't hold at least championship meets LCM. When he inevitably breaks 3:31 or even 3:30 at NCAAs, how many people will ask "what would that convert to long course" or say "can't wait to see what he does long course this summer"? Why wait until the summer? US college swimming clearly has world class swimmers and coaches, and the NCAA champs in particular is surely one of the fastest meets in the world alongside the Olympics and World Champs. Given this, why do we continue to hold these college championship meets in SCY? I get that SCY is exciting, but it's painful to see something like a mind boggling 3:31 SCY 400 IM and have to wonder what that swim would have been LCM, where he could break a WR and not "just" a US Open / NCAA record. Whatever ridiculous times Marchand swims in a couple weeks, the first thing I'll think is "I wish that was LCM because he might've broken a WR." I can't recall a single SCY meet Phelps peaked for, likely because if you want to be the best in the world, LCM is the pool the big international meets are swum in, and he/Bowman understood this. Obviously Bowman is coaching Marchand and (1) surely they're focused on Paris, (2) I'd trust Bowman over me, and (3) for all I know ASU trains a lot of LCM. I've even seen UA-cam comments that will ask "what does a [insert SCY time] mean" because the rest of the world doesn't understand or care about SCY. You could argue that USA swimming doesn't seem to have a problem producing world class LCM swimmers, so why "fix" something that isn't broken? On the other hand, we can all think of swimmers who excelled at SCY but never reached the same level in LCM (I can't think of many great LCM swimmers that weren't also great SCY). Now, maybe they were just always going to be better at SCY than LCM regardless of how they trained and what meets they swam in. However, if their peak meets were all LCM, would that have forced them to focus more on LCM and given them a better shot at performing at the international level? At least once, NCAAs were held SCM in Olympic years. IMO this would be a step in the right direction, however SCM world champs and WRs don't really "count" as much as LCM world champs and WRs. The first counterargument I can think of is that some colleges don't have access to a LCM pool to train. I personally never found this to be a problem (training SCY in the LCM season), but perhaps others would. Admittedly it also limits the number of facilities that can host a meet, since you need a LCM pool and a warm up pool.
Under water for 1:20+. Def sub 3:30. The question is by how much. I see improvement on his backstroke breakouts. Perhaps he counteracts his backstroke “weakness” by extending the under water phase on backstroke by 3 meters or so and sharpens it up a titch. With taper and such, I see him 3:28.88.
Didn't see splits for this here, so in case you don't want to look for them : 48.75/53.68/59.30/50.11. And he lapped the former record holder. AND his 1:48.82 200 breast was 35 minutes before.

The 3:30 barrier really depends on the mindset and preparation to ncaa I’m not at this type of speed but I had a great 100 breast during a hs conference that I didn’t taper for, and I wasn’t able to beat that 100 breast time fully tapered and shaved and suited at hs state. There is an interview with Leon and Grant House that explains much about dual meets: ua-cam.com/video/tIlabgHUoL0/v-deo.html
@@frankwilson7500 thanks for this
Come on, tents!
THEY’RE TOO DAMN BIG!
@@Sockwell someone tell Bob ASAP!
3:29.82 he’ll do it
He went even faster: 3:28.82
100 fly women’s is definitely up there as most interesting too
Yepp - I've got that race in my top 5 (working on a video on this actually)
@@Sockwell love that! Can’t wait to put predictions in your comment section!
Y are ASU swimmers teched at a duel meet
The suit for all dual meets.
3:30.4
Even faster: 3:28.82
All I kno is
Over 50% of his next 400im performance will be underwater
3:29.76
He went even faster: 3:28.82
i think we are all about to see a sub 400 this summer. I don't think Leon will just squeak under 4.00 I think he is going to shatter it. I think we are about to see a 3:58.46 depending on how hard he is pushed. Clearly he is heads and shoulders above everyone else.
No, 3:30. Breast will be 0.5 faster as well as the free.
He'll definitely go 4:02 low in LCM this summer. That, and a 1:54 low in the 200 IM.
the Genetics to have that much energy so late is ridiculous
I never knew 365m IM was a thing people did?
Yes USA swims yards for college.
am from the future i would like to tell you that he just won 4 gold medal and set 4 Olympic records at Paris Olympic
He’s going 3:28 low
What year is he…my god. I almost don’t wanna say yes because I want to see him crush his senior year but he’s gonna go under 30 for sure…
He’s a sophomore 🥶
@@Sockwell 😟 I have no words
DQ for that celebration
I dont see the timeline, idk if thats just me tho
It’s there
@@xtrow8664 weird
Bro what
What the hell
How are there so litlle officials? I race in belgium and we have at least 2 officials for each lane, one at each side of the pool. Many of our races even have 3 officials for each lane. My races aren't even close to the level of these guys... how does it work in america?
for US college dual meets there are a ton of them every weekend around the country and they're low stakes so there's not as much need for a lot of officials. any championship meets will have closer to the number you're used to
@@randomthyme8153 thanks for the answer!
No one stands a chance in 2 and 4 IM and 2 breast. Maybe 2 fly as well
yes
Bonkers
3:28.14
He said after he saw the feet of those Cal swimmers he pushed harder.
No doubt in my mind he will obliterate Phelps' WR in the 400LC.
Hey
3:27.66 look back at this comment after ncaas
Not quite: 3:28.82
We’re gonna see a 4:27
48.2
52.3
58.6
48.8
4:27.9
But it’ll be Carson who pulls it out.
Lmao you are crazy
What makes you think that? 58.6 will be especially hard for him to pull out on the breaststroke. I think Leon has a much better chance.
@@kingofthenerds7925 I’m joking
Boost
European swimmers be like: yeah, but what do all these times mean, though?!
It means that the “untouchable” 4:03.8 is very much touchable

I think he gonna go 3:31 again at NCAAs. 3:29 would be too much....
3:31 for a second time (even if slower than 3:31.8) would be nuts.
He went 3:28.82 at NCAAs.
he beat this btw
He obviously was rested the entire team was
Bob confirmed they were suited, but unrested and unshaved. With that being said, some people react better to rest than others and we'll have to wait and see what happens at NCAAs and PAC 12s now.
Deserves a better video of the swim.
Ya boy spent his own money to commandeer this video…we’re lucky to have one at all 🫡
There is a better video of the race that was shot by the father of one of the ASU teem members. I have seen it and suggested that he make it available to ASU
