The 4 basic strokes are Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Front Crawl. Front Crawl is the fastest stroke so by default, any team will enter their best swimmer in each stroke which for "FREE STYLE" will be a swimmer doing the "Front Crawl". Hence, we will always see a "Free" event swimmer doing the "Front Crawl" stroke. That is until this event where the fastest swimmer Gretchen can do Fly faster than other swimmers can do Crawl and she can do Fly faster than she can do Crawl; hence what you just saw happen. Happy for her and makes for a great show and establishes an uniqueness for journalists to talk about in promoting the sport of swimming.
In terms of beating a 50 time by .41 it’s kinda been done before. Going into 2018 NCAAs the men’s 50 free stood at 18.20 by dressel which he beat by .39 to 17.81 leading off the 200 free relay. Then he lowered it to 17.63 which is .57 lower than the previous record and I believe .84 lower than the next performer at the time (Cielo 18.47). I have no answer for qualifying for the 50 free backstroke though that’s just insane.
Thank you for pointing out that she was long on the turn... I figured that was how she executed her race because she's so damn tall haha. If her turn was timed right she would have easily gone under 22!
Almost didn’t say anything because a 22.1 should just be looked at as incredible and nothing else, but after some deep thinking I really think there’s .11 in that turn 😳
@@Sockwell absolutely! 22.1 is unreal, but it's even crazier to see that it's possible to dip under 22 with that one adjustment. Keep it up with the content the next two weeks 👍
It would truly be interesting if one of the "disciplines" also was the fastest way to swim freestyle. Would there effectively be twice as many events open to backstroke specialists, if they can compete without cross-training?
That is simply insane, my best 50 free beat her but it was only by a second, so take the blocks start out and who knows? I’m really surprised that they didn’t put her on the 800 free relay, dropped them down to 4th.
Dang, I think this is the fastest I've ever found a Kyle Sockwell video

YEAH YEAH YEAH….I KNOW!! 🤬
Rofl oh snap! 😂
Dive in off the block normally, and turn over before you come up, and then just swim backstroke.

Gretchen CAN NOT BE STOPPED
Yet, Kaylee Mckeown is the Olympic and World champ, and the WR holder. Hmmmmm.

You’re welcome on the 50 back v 50 free comparison. 💥

Agreed, the dryland to swim ratio was absolutely amazing today@@patrickmaldonado7999
Short course 50 back is basically a dolphin kickers discipline.
i love how a gretchen walsh video just randomly turned into a rant about caps
My brain is a scary (and sometimes fun 🥰) place 😰
Hey Kyle can you make a video about NCSAs in Orlando! It seemed like it was a crazy meet

@sockwell we need a roast bro !!!

How do you feel about high level meet including swimmer chosen walk out songs?
Why won’t they post the official races on UA-cam?
Good question, usually they’re on top of it with the NCAA YT account but this year they’re big time slacking
😮😮😮😮 That’s a lead like Ledecky

Didn't Dressel break the 50 free record by 0.6s in 2018 (counting the fastest swim of the day vs previous record)
Yepp - he’s probably the only comparable here but he broke the 50 free record about 162 times over a 4 year period
Yards oof, long course is real swimming
How will this translate to Olympic distances? Anyone know?
It would truly be interesting if one of the "disciplines" also was the fastest way to swim freestyle. Would there effectively be twice as many events open to backstroke specialists, if they can compete without cross-training?
Regarding qualifying for the 50 free. Is she a good freestyler? How fast would she be if she swam the 50 free finishing with back?
She's the fastest 50 freestyler in history by a wide, WIDE margin. Broke the NCAA record (fastest in history) twice in one day this week.
So…she could have finished the second 25 with back and still won easily- that’s crazy!
Did dressel break the 50 free record by .5? I couldve sworn it was like 18.11 before that swim
That is simply insane, my best 50 free beat her but it was only by a second, so take the blocks start out and who knows? I’m really surprised that they didn’t put her on the 800 free relay, dropped them down to 4th.

are you commentating for the men’s champs? I assume so because you haven’t predicted men’s winners.
I am not, but I wish I was.
The Men’s video predicting event winners will drop after Women’s NCAAs concludes (probably on Monday)
