  • Journey to Northern California and watch McCloud Railway number 18 pull a fall photo excursion in October of 2004 and clear snow from the rails in January of 2005. This turned out to be the last steam operations to be seen on the McCloud before the rails were pulled up between McCloud and Burney, CA in the mid 2000's.
This is part of our program titled "Northwest Heritage Railways" which is available on DVD, Hi-Definition Blu-ray and Digital Download by visiting 7ideaproductions.com. www.7ideaproductions.com/prod...

AWESOME video, I cringed when I seen the crew having to dig out switches from the snow since I have been doing that throughout my railroad career with the CP. Thanks for sharing this with us all.

Digging switches does not look like the most romantic part of railroading.

@@7ideaproductions No not really, There would be times my crew and I would rather be changing out rail or something rather than cleaning out switches.

My son is special needs and he loves trains 🚆🚂🚃🚄🚅🚇🚈🚉🚊🚝🚞🚋🛤 they're one of his favorite things in the whole world 🌎. He finds the McCloud River Railroad very interesting and hopes that real soon or sooner than soon that the entire railroad is rebuilt and used again for both freight and passenger trains but he does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality!

Wow that was a great watch and man did you really get some material there that we all can look on in the years to come and reminisce about what used to be so great! The action you caught with #18 using that plow to clear snow was just fantastic!

Thanks Dan. I will never forget those trips. I was 33, working in radio and had just bought my first semi-professional (Sony DVX2100) camcorder.
Pentrex used this footage in their "Extreme Steam II" DVD and that led to me launching 7idea Productions. Eventually I would quit my radio job and pursue this full time. Going on 14 years now!

To me, this is the REAL northern California, full of history, both good and bad. Often people refer to Northern California as SFO, Sacramento, etc. Real Northern California is north of SFO and Sacramento. It is sad to see how it is changing so much.

This was nice video about a remarkable short line/logging/lumber rail road. There is a book written about this rail road's history (from the 70's). I believe that you can still find it. I had a copy, which I gave to a friend, now he won't give it back. I don't blame him. ;=)

#25 is alive and well on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railway in Garibaldi, Oregon.
The #18 is down on the Virginia and Truckee in Carson City, Nevada.
Not sure what became of the #19 that ran in Cottage Grove and the Yreka Western in Yreka, California.

You are absolutely right! They used most of my footage from those two events in the final segment of Extreme Steam II. I was just starting to film trains back in 2004 and it was a huge honor for me to have Pentrex use some of my stuff.
