    Most of these locomotives are so old that it was worth more as salvageable parts and scrap metal than to rebuild and return them to service, especially now with EPA Tier level emission requirements for older locomotives. That's why many of the wide-cab locomotives built in the 1980's to early 1990's from EMD and GE are now sitting in dead yards instead of mainline service, all replaced by Progress Rail/EMD SD70ACe/SD70ACe-T4 and GE/Wabtec ES44DC/ES44AC locomotives.

      You can not save every engine just because it’s old and has a good history. With the latest emission controls and much better fuel consumption most newer engines even though more expensive to buy are cheeper to run than to rebuild old units. Just look at the latest rules California wants to implement. If that is done and other states follow we will see even some newer model engines hit the scrap yard. Don’t blame the new Canadian Pacific Kanas City railroad for ignoring preservation. They just rebuilt and ran one of their old steam engines as well as some older diesel covered wagons to celebrate the new merger.

    • @wesw9586

      @@johnchambers8528 the regulations are b.s. And rebuilds are very much a thing. We never need to build another GEVO if we just keep improving existing units. Rail companies can't waste money on machines that don't make money for them. It's not a tragedy. It's simple corporate capitalism. It is very pathetic to see the demise of this legendary EMD locomotives. Anyway, Do you have any information about the whereabouts of CP 6038? Does it still exists or scrapped? Please reply, 6038 is my most favourite SD40-2 from CP's roster.

    If the economy was as good as the politicians say it is then these EMDs would be undergoing rebuilding instead of scrapping.

      That’s not how any of it works. These things are going on 50 years old and it just doesn’t make sense to put so much money into something so old.

      blame the politicians, if the workforce would do their jobs instead lying to their leadership maybe the rebuilding they "underwent" would keep them in service.

      Well, that's not how it works. When the economy is doing well, companies reinvest in new, more efficient, equipment.

      If the economy was as bad as the politicians say it is, railroads wouldn't have the money to invest in new locomotives to replace these.

    • @pashon4percushon
      @pashon4percushon 2 місяці тому

      @@SynchroScore I don't think the economy has anything to do with creating and buying new engines as it may seems. Feight is critical to the infrastructure of the country so it has priority costs from the government and investors.

    • @Joe-d7m6k
      @Joe-d7m6k 3 місяці тому

      The part I don't get, is that these locos meet emissions for the year they were built. So-- how can EPA, or anybody say that a 35 year old loco has to ALL OF A SUDDEN ,meet the present day emission rules????

    • @BroadwayLTDProductions
      @BroadwayLTDProductions 2 місяці тому

      Trains are the most environmentally friendly mode of transportation even with older locomotives yet the EPA screws with the railroads non stop. But that’s okay they have screwing with the auto industry too which is why you have these small turbo engines replacing naturally aspirated V6’s and V8’s. The federal government needs to be abolished. Waste of tax dollars pieces of crap!
