Fr. Richard is such a light in the darkness of current religious institutions. Seems to me his teachings deserve listening/learning. Please consider supporting the Rohr Institute with your prayers and funds.
Without question I admire the work that Father Rohr has done since I listened to his tapes back in '74. I've long lost any battle with any kind of moral high ground since I've deteriorated into solitude, poverty and despair. Some lives are just tragic with no silver lining no matter how much one wants to spiritualize it. As I reflect on my pathetic current condition, I'm painfully aware of the many years I used to be useful as I worked hard to raise three kids, run a successful business and devote myself to the church as I faithfully took action in my own small way by delivering meals to the shut ins in my parish for years. Those days are long gone as I've succumbed to my genes and the circumstances of my unwanted birth. All I've learned is that life is way more sloppy than U ever thought. Beyond his highly intellectualized theological sermons, I'm not sure that Richard has added much to the case for Christianity other than any other religions. After all the well meaning complex work that Fr. Rohr has done over the years, I hope he's still cognizant of the essence of the scant and few promises that Christ really proclaimed. He did not promise happiness and He certainly didn't promise an easy life or any kind of freedom from persecution, poverty or even mental illness. It's only been through my own failings that I have some realization that I need to just shut up and try and learn how to listen. I'm scared of Him just like His disciples were. I can understand why He was frustrated with stupidity like mine. This is why I go to His essence. He forgives me for my sins even while I keep on failing. I admit that I just can't understand much of what Richard has to say but I hope I can eventually utilize his wisdom.
yours is the most direct ,humbling comment i have ever read on UA-cam, without any " martyr or victim cop out " If you dare to say this with name & picture (I am not naive .One can fake anything and everything on UA-cam) You have my respect. whatever that is worth. I would not dare to."pollute" your honesty, with advice & cheerful/hopeful comments. For i know the taste of despair.
paul newsome i can relate to your story as I have suffered failings and tremendous loss. Rohr is one voice that has helped me make sense of my journey. Falling Upward spoke so succinctly to my circumstances and helped me see the gain that came through my loss. I also find Thomas Merton's writings to be of great solace. So humbled by life. Learning to embrace silence, but it is a hard work to go against everything that screams for attention.
Amen & hello Paul from Paul in Australia. As i read what you've written, i can say that i've travelled a very similar thought journey about Christ as you have. I find myself afraid of what i see Christ NOT doing in my case/life, and wonder if i will be found on the last day. I've raised 4 kids my wife died at 42yrs and from that day my faith and trust has been all but demolished. My family saved my life. My fear is such that i tolerate the world in bits, knowing that there are no certainties and many ready to surprise without good intentions!! I wish you well, & thank you for your candid exposure of your vulnerable inner self..I have however found a small men's group that i depend on & visit each fortnight. Go well on your travels, and may we all be found soon! Best wishes. Paul B.
Paul, what a human and honest statement on life. forgive me if I sound like preaching. My life has mostly been one of good works. And I have developed an enormous ego. I have realised that now. My salvation or healing has been the realisation of the importance of the present moment.
Thanks Fr Rohr. This is why everyone believes in God. Skeptics can only use words to say what they THINK. God comes in the silence and stillness BEFORE the words.
love his approach and wisdom.has helped me expand or reconnect with Christ where evangelical christianity boxed me and God in with thier we know everything answers
out of the frying pan into the fire into an institution that makes god into their own image and are the arbiters of salvation. This just one of a long line of their false teachers and prophets. Blind guides. At least evangelical Christianity had the right idea just that they were confused. The RC church threw out the bible 1700 years ago and then became a political organisation
This increases my faith in the scriptures : For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
We were blessed to have Fr. Rohr with us for the May 2013 Festival of Faiths, and we are glad that you enjoyed his presentation. Thank you for your interest!
When God began to reach out to me in Silence, I was overcome with fear and didn't know why. But, I needed to know what was going on and what did of all this mean. I thank you Fr. Rohr, for providing this insight - I feel more at peace now.
This is a blessing, that all these faiths come together. Silence is Golden, as is Father Rohr. It is a joy to see interfaith in action, thank you for this post of this compassion in action. Still, I feel the presence of the Christ within and affirm God's love for each one of us.
Never heard of Fr. Rohr before. Stumbled into this, but am truly astounded by what he has to say. and I'm not even Christian. I do think it worth mentioning that he missed the mark on describing the Buddhist concept of emptiness. Glad I found Fr. Rohr.
What a religious genius! Amazing integration of all that helps from different spiritual and religious paths, such as non-duality, Advaita, to Buddhism, e. t.c. bringing it back to a better understanding of Christianity. By the way, Joel S. Goldsmith uses a lot terms such as 'Isness' of God, and God appearing 'As' an individual being, as an animal , plant, a rock. And who said (Rumi?) that Silence is a language of God while all else is a poor interpretation.
i like you a lot. "this world is more than a veil of tears, there is joy in it somewhere. But the joy is not for mere tourists." 8:58. (ua-cam.com/video/GL6eNmGxnbQ/v-deo.html) i have a feeling i'd like other things you've stamped with a passion...
Agree. It's easy to think about it without actually practicing it. That is a whole new experience. It's a transformation of the heart that begins with surrender. I can find a million piddly silly things to do to divert me from contemplation. Then I ask, Why am I doing this? Why delay? Why put other things first? The answer is clear.
You;re right Richard. All clerics should be hospice workers as part of their training - care of the terminally ill , dying - really getting into the 'silence' of 'washing feet'.
There are many levels of understanding and there is a great gap within the population in their level's of understanding as individuals. That is a problem in the world of humanity. Its almost our "cross to bare" at the same time we have to try ever so gently and graciously (tactfully) to raise up humanity - what a job! ha ha
We all become wordsmith in order to get what we want. We must study and pray for knowledge, understanding and wisdom to know what's worth wanting. I never felt old last year. I feel old these days so now my former wants are inappropriate

Christ’s passage was the revelation of the passage of every human being, and any misreading of him is a misreading of the whole of humanity. Investigating Christ’s human experiences in terms of consciousness or self opens up a whole new dimension of his Truth and revelation, and not only his, but our own and that of the whole of creation.” Rc p. 282 “The mind can find no definitive satisfaction or fulfillment with mere concepts and hearsay. What man is seeking is the living experiential reality of the Truth, his own immediate experience of this truth. Until he does, he will go right on questioning and being dissatisfied. Even if man knew the truth, he could never be fulfilled by merely ‘believing’ it. He is only fulfilled by experientially living it - knowing it firsthand.” Ws p. 107 “To say that Christ’s self or consciousness was eternal gives an entirely different picture and meaning to Christ than if we say his self or consciousness was not eternal…I think the West will come upon its own set of problems when it faces the impermanence of Christ’s self or consciousness, but, at the same time, this will reveal an entirely new dimension of Christ’s revelation - of this I am certain.” Ws p. 156 “But who can understand death and resurrection coming after a life of union and oneness with God? Who can understand the true nature of this death and what the resurrection reveals of Christ’s divine nature? Because of this mystery I regard Christianity as the most difficult and mystical of all religions; Christ is the most unbelievable and unknown Truth there is - and the most difficult of all Truths.” Rc p. 78 “Sometimes the impression is given that Christianity has a monopoly on forgiveness, salvation, savior, eternal life, God’s Spirit, grace, and so on, when, in fact, Christianity took all this straight from Judaism! The revelation of ‘Christ’ had nothing to do with any of this and changed none of it.” Rc p. 83 “Basically, there is no such thing as ‘Christian mysticism’ because Christianity - transformation into Christ - is the essence of mysticism.” Rc p. 140 “To think the anthropomorphic biblical interpretation of God ‘generating’ or ‘begetting’ an Uncreated ‘Son’ could have justified a transition in the Church’s whole understanding of the Trinity and Christ, can only be put down as the most flagrant wrong turn in the entire history of Christianity.” Rc p. 144 “There has to be God (Logos) before there is any incarnation of the Logos - before there is any Christ and before there is the created man Jesus. No question, the Creed must be totally restated, Christians today are not the semi-polytheists of yesterday.” Rc p. 157 “To my knowledge, however, the Greeks never agreed hypostasis meant persona - and indeed it does not. In time, however, in the West at least, hypostasis and person were used as synonymous terms. So due to this error, there occurred another switch from the original hypostasis to person - a monumental wrong turn as regards a true understanding of the Trinity and Christ.” Rc p. 170 “Like the fathers, Christians would be horrified to think they were polytheists or believed in three gods. But this is why the Trinity is kept at a distance, declared a ‘mystery’ incapable of the human mind to grasp. This is also why the Trinity means relatively nothing to the average Christian and plays no part in his spiritual life.” Rc p. 201 “Sometimes we wonder how Western civilization ever became so self-oriented compared to other civilizations that were more oriented to the benefit of everyone over their individual selves. Well, who invented the individual and particular ‘person’ or self, and who gave it ontological priority over everyman’s common human nature? Christianity!” Rc p. 242 “What few people realize, however, is that the official Church or Christian language is totally premised on this use of idioms instead of on the truth of Christ.” Rc p. 248 “No question, the C of P is the most deceiving ruse in all of Christian history a ruse responsible for totally wrong views of Christ, the Trinity and the man Jesus.” Rc p. 249 “Yet the more divine one makes the Logos’ human nature, the more Christ fades from the picture and the more Christianity deteriorates to a Jesus-cult.” Rc p. 257 “But who knows what people think they are praying to or worshiping? We can probably say for certain they are not praying to the dual natures of Christ!” Rc p. 279 “Eliminate the term ‘person’, and how is Christ to be envisioned as a single being? Without theology’s absolute dependence on person as an individual being, its Christologies would go down like a row of dominoes.” Rc p. 291 “this is exactly what the Incarnation is telling us: not only is mankind not that bad, but rather, it is of greatest worth to God.” Rc p. 300 “Even the best of theologians are reluctant to admit any radical existential change in human nature - much less an ontological change. Instead, they assure us everyone will go on just the same - only better, of course.” Rc p. 318 “The day Christianity lost this understanding of deification as the way man is saved, is the day it lost Christ.” Rc p. 323 “That down the road, Christianity was turned into the narrow, naïve and childish view we have today - i.e., only the man Jesus is Christ, only Jesus could ever be eternally one with God - is the inevitable loss of the whole revelation of the Incarnation, and, consequently, of Christ and Christianity…Christianity’s exclusive, boxed-in view of Jesus and Christ, not only aborts man’s spiritual journey, but will be its own undoing - why? Simply because it is not the Truth of ‘Christ’.” Rc p. 335 “To say Christian theology is ‘complicated’ is the understatement of all time. It is an unadulterated mess. It so defies common logic as to require man to forfeit his intellectual integrity in order to ‘believe’.” Rc p. 465 “What is unfortunate, however, is those who write the history of the early development of Christian thought and doctrine, consistently rely on the present-day Aristotelian rendition of it. It could be said this is a deliberate attempt to eliminate any possible ‘Platonic’ understanding of Christ as a universal in order to make Christ solely one particular man - Jesus, of course.” Rc p. 486 “Loss of self is the very foundation of Christianity.” Ecc p. 82 “The primary purpose of my writing, however, was less the subject of no-self than to put into the field of Mystical Theology a whole stage of the spiritual journey presently missing.”
Very interesting. Love how you think and you still look young. For seventy you could pass for twenty years younger. Contemplation and non duality must be healthy. I must try. Great love, Great suffering and the way of prayer. Now it makes sense.

Peter, this is not either, or. Richard Rhor is not diminishing the Holy Spirit's 'personhood'. We humans are persons and yet at our most basic level we are energy...a force field. Seeing the Holy Spirit as the energy connecting all things does not, in my view, diminishes, it expands.
Theologians use the word 'person' because they don't have any other word to use, so 'person' is a placeholder word. No one can say what the Holy Spirit is but the Holy Spirit.
Sherrie, I think Father Richard Rohr is wearing the wooden crucifix of the Franciscan Order (where my church belongs and I have seen them here as well) Hope this helps.... Blessings...
One huge error here. Young men forced into celibacy do not make paedophiles. They are messed up and the abuse of imposed celibacy can lead to other abuses. But they are not paedophiles because of celibacy.
I thought something similar actually.punctuating a lecture of that length with silence I thought might emphasize his message, yeah. I understand, lovingly so, respectfully so, he fully acknowledges he is a 1 on the Enneagram. 🐝
23:30 he's dead on. He's talking about the thick American Media Bubble. I hardly watch news from the USA now as you'll lose complete awareness of what is really going on in the world. I recommend BBC, DW English live on UA-cam from German and France 24 English also live on UA-cam. CBC in Canada is also very good.
It is much more likely in the depth of silence to encounter an evil spirit. Yes we are to meditate but we are instructed to meditate on the scriptures and test the spirits by the Word of God. There will be many false prophets and many who come in the name of Jesus Christ. We have been warned so take heed.
I don't know what to think of this lecture. There is no doubt that we live in a very noisy world. A lot of the noise is a diversion from the spiritual values that are really important. But to even talk about silence you have to break the silence. Seens kind of self defeating to the whole arguement. I think that there has to be an argument for the value of balance. Silence is where we find meditation and contemplation. But to much of anything is an imbalance. We find God in Jesus Christ and we can't know God unless we speak of Him in audible expressions. The Gospel is preached to the world and that is not advanced without speaking to the world. Overall the lecture is philisphical and in that sense it puts an emphasis on somthing that we probably need more of. I am not a Roman Catholic nor am I a mysitc. But overall I find Rohr to be a bit to esoteric. Perhaps he is impalanced in his mysticism? But in reality is anyone really balanced?
"The Gospel being preached". There is a non-verbal way of preaching (through our actions) and there is a verbal way of "being silent" or, we can be talking from a place of "silence/still-ness".
This guy is simply GENIUS! Im an ortodox christian, an this resonates with all my being! God bless you brother Richard!
I read and listen to Fr. Richard each and every daY
It is very interesting to hear a man who speaks so well to talk about the importance of silence. God bless this man.
Fr. Richard is such a light in the darkness of current religious institutions. Seems to me his teachings deserve listening/learning. Please consider supporting the Rohr Institute with your prayers and funds.
Tom- completely agree.
funds ? haha
After a 40 year hiatus, Fr. Richard made catholicism possible again.
Merton, and followed by Rohr brought me back to the church!
I wish I could listen all-day to your conferences. You've lightened my spiritual life
Without question I admire the work that Father Rohr has done since I listened to his tapes back in '74.

Paul, what a human and honest statement on life. forgive me if I sound like preaching. My life has mostly been one of good works. And I have developed an enormous ego.
I have realised that now. My salvation or healing has been the realisation of the importance of the present moment.
How you do anything is how you do everything, wow!
Our modern day "Merton" thank you, Fr. Rohr
Thanks Fr Rohr. This is why everyone believes in God. Skeptics can only use words to say what they THINK. God comes in the silence and stillness BEFORE the words.

@William Oarlock Brainless comment.
More stimulation, more excitement ...We are living in a dopamine addictive culture. Silence is an antidote to this.
Poetry is the silence between words
"The ego uses words to get what it wants... The soul doesn't use words. It... surrounds words with space... And that's silence."
Richard Rohr has it all together and I was pleased to pass this on to a pastor-in-training in the UCC. She too will love him.
He's good, and deep, would love to hear a peaceful discussion with him and a Traditional priest
This is so profound! So helpful in so many ways! Prayer being a form of listening on a suble level !

Peace be to God, always.
Father, Son, Holy Spirit are One. That's my experience.
this man is simply inspiringly different
The Father is silence. The Mother is music. The fetus in this womb hears Mother's music. The space between the notes. There is the Father.

Rc p. 465 “What is unfortunate, however, is those who write the history of the early development of Christian thought and doctrine, consistently rely on the present-day Aristotelian rendition of it. It could be said this is a deliberate attempt to eliminate any possible ‘Platonic’ understanding of Christ as a universal in order to make Christ solely one particular man - Jesus, of course.”
Rc p. 486 “Loss of self is the very foundation of Christianity.”
Ecc p. 82 “The primary purpose of my writing, however, was less the subject of no-self than to put into the field of Mystical Theology a whole stage of the spiritual journey presently missing.”
What book titles do the abbreviations represent ?
He was so right on the clever put downs of TV shows it is wrong to fill your mind with that junk you have to like this guy
"Silence allows things to emerge in their wholeness." 1:04:00
REALIZE THE KRISHNA CONSCIOUSNESS WITHIN
1:25:33 The mind loves to take sides, exaggerate the differences, and then win... and becomes the enemy of compassion.
Very interesting. Love how you think and you still look young. For seventy you could pass for twenty years younger. Contemplation and non duality must be healthy. I must try. Great love, Great suffering and the way of prayer. Now it makes sense.
53:02 no need to choose between the two. Just jumping into the flow [in trinity] and allowing it to happen.
'And the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.' - Jesus. 'There is no hell.' Richard Rohr.
It's not what Jesus "would" say, it is what Jesus says it is.
Rohr understands on a deep level that god is not sentient.
Yaaay I found truth
More hot air.
Where is God? .....“God is everywhere“

Can you look at the subtitles to understand. Thank you.
Low audio on this video. I'm struggling to hear the speaker introducing Fr Rohr.
The Holy Spirit is a person (who can be grieved) not just a 'force field'!
Oh the Holy Spirit is our Mother. What about that metaphor? She is a dove, water, fire, wind, and beauty.
I have applied to the living school and practice as I learn. I would like to know what symbol Father Rohr is wearing around his neck. thank you
Sherrie, I believe it is a Tau cross.
Rachel, hi and thank you. I would like to have one, so will make on.
"How do you sell silence?!"
~Fr. Rohr
Sherrie, I think Father Richard Rohr is wearing the wooden crucifix of the Franciscan Order (where my church belongs and I have seen them here as well) Hope this helps.... Blessings...
Laurie Baker I think he is going to be silent on that!
One huge error here. Young men forced into celibacy do not make paedophiles. They are messed up and the abuse of imposed celibacy can lead to other abuses. But they are not paedophiles because of celibacy.
How do you know?
I thought that he was saying that because they were not trained how to handle celibacy some priests fall intopredophilia
His gospel is that of non dual consciousness not the finished work of Christ
A two hour talk on the virtue of silence. (Irony?)
Big Ray of Sunshine you are.
I thought something similar actually.punctuating a lecture of that length with silence I thought might emphasize his message, yeah. I understand, lovingly so, respectfully so, he fully acknowledges he is a 1 on the Enneagram. 🐝
Chronos vs Kairos
28:03 - hilarious ;)
Americans love to "talk about" silence.
but it should be origt for other people😜💙🙏😇
I don't know what to think of this lecture.
Didn't Christ Himself need silence at times?

Wake up people!??
New Age Bull
2 hours of words with absolutely nothing worthwhile to offer.
Woke
Maybe the most ridiculous pieces of garbage that I have ever seen on UA-cam what is sham!!! Ok
So why did you listen?
