A Blessed Encounter With Richard Rohr
“To throw away your measuring tapes, your scales, you’re weighing and this - because you’re trying to weigh the infinite. And when we talk about God, all the different words of different religions use are fingers pointing to the moon. Approximations. But you can’t weigh or measure or calculate or dole out the infinite. There’s enough to go around. It’s a worldview of abundance. And we understood God in a worldview of scarcity. And so we see our politics based on a worldview of scarcity. There isn’t enough healthcare to go around, there aren’t enough homes to go around. Everything is: there’s not enough. And this said, I’m getting political now, but people have way more that they need or ever could use in their lifetime. So that - We would throw away our weighing, our counting. Stop counting who’s worthy, who’s not worthy. And if you look at at so many political arguments, that’s at the bottom. Who’s worthy of this and who isn’t worthy. And they try to weigh worthiness. It ends you up in a hole, a dead end. It’s stupid, stupid, stupid. Because I’m not worthy and once I’ve accepted and forgiven that, then I can forgive everybody else’s seeming unworthiness.”

My family lives in the Albuquerque area. Each time I visit, I can feel your loving spirit and energy across the entire valley. It is so profound, I honestly believe it has permeated this valley as a living prayer. I have listened to you and read your words since the cassette days. I hope to meet you at the “coral castle” someday.

Richard Rohr has opened up a whole new level of spirituality for me. I was raised a devout Catholic (LOVING our Catholic Faith!) but believing in Father Feeney's "discovery" of extra ecclasium nulla salus. At about 40 years of age, 20 years ago, our whole family (about 30 of us) switched to ultra-ultra-traditional Catholicism ("sedevacantism") but God, in His goodness, worked within me and brought me home in the wee hours of the Ascension during the Year of Mercy 2016, 18 years later.
Since then I have been floating on air, held up by the Spirit of God, being called by Him to daily Mass at the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy (Stockbridge, MA) almost daily and learning and discerning ever since. I realize how closed I was to the movement of God within me. And now. NOW I have been introduced to Father Richard Rohr. Oh my. I feel like I've died and gone to Heaven when I read his writings or listen to him teach.
But at the same time, I am truly perplexed and NEED an answer to my perplexity, please, if at all possible? I realize that I am only one soul, but I am a soul in turmoil until I have this answered.
Jesus teaches in Scripture that ALL MUST be baptized. He says that NO ONE comes to the Father except through Him and that no one sees the Father, but that he who sees Jesus sees the Father. He talks about the necessity of conversion and turning our backs on sin or being eternally condemned for it unless we do. Then there's Our Lady's trips to earth, especially in the 1800's and in the 1900's and even now, (possibly?) at Medjugorje where she PLEADS with people to convert and to say the Rosary and showed the children at Fatima the awful vision of hell. There are the rules of the Church, one of which is that we must attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation or suffer the pain of mortally offending God by our disobedience. Then there is the whole Mercy of God message through St. Faustina. WHY would anyone need The Mercy of God if there was sin? Why does Father Richard never mention sin and the healings of Christ where he gets in BIG trouble because He forgives peoples' sins and THEN heals their physical ailments?
Please, PLEASE explain to me how this jives with what Father Richard is saying in this talk (above) and in some other of his talks and books (of which I've purchased about 10 from ebay in the past couple of weeks).

When Christ was baptized He was baptized into humanity . The descent of the Holy Spirit like a dove and the father saying this is my beloved son in whom I’m well pleased signifies Christs imputed righteousness to mankind. Baptism prior to this was typically when gentiles converted to Judaism. And we know that baptism represents being immersed into Christ’s death and resurrection. But one has to be baptized into the father son and Holy Spirit , the actual act of being dunked in water doesn’t make you righteous. Read Paul’s idea on water baptism in 1 Corinthians. And there isn’t any evidence of any of the apostles being baptized.

I too as an evangelical sense deep wisdom in his teaching but struggle against this idea of universalism or denying the redemptive aspect of the cross. Jesus talked about Hell more than Any other figure in the Bible. The Friar seems to be taking some neat concepts too far.
The Bible is the inspired Word of God and our only real link too Him. To poopoo the Bible and Jesus while espousing the Trinity is like saying you love baseball but can’t stand sports. What would He know about the trinity if not for the Bible? I mean come on. And as a read my Bible every day Protestant that doesn’t work. He even uses the Bible to prove trinitarianism to a Jew? You can’t be dogmatic and Universal at the same time.
Philippians 2:5-11 Let this mind be in you... The Name of Jesus is above every name.
As Charles Spurgeon said wisdom isn’t being able to distinguish between the truth and a lie but between true and almost true. That is the danger here. Ironically so many of his objections to the deity of Jesus and divine inspiration of the Bible while espousing the Trinity would have gotten him excommunicated from the Church.
I think he is misguided and deceived no matter how well intentioned. One other little thing- he throws around arbitrary definitions like the definition of a mystic- or the absurdity of the creation narrative and build his theories on these arbitrary definitions. That’s shaky by any intellectual standard! He’s written 50 books to teach you how to not know anything? lol

I love this! I'm a recovering traditionalist convert with quite a past before coming into the church, and I left in 2017. I want back in but I keep thinking 'Trent, Anathema, Trent, Anathema' etc etc etc. I still prefer the Latin Mass but what keeps me from going back is the legalism and and difficulties with certain dogmas.

Richard isn't wrong - God is a threefold being, but if you really want a full understanding of "let's make man in our image," you have to go listen to Dr. Michael Heiser. He's an ancient Semitic language scholar and he truly gets it and can prove it. It's the Elohim. God is the Most High, creator Elohim. He is species unique and none are like Him, but there are others. They are the heavenly host. Some stayed loyal to the Lord, others rebelled. These are the morning stars and sons of God in Job, who dance and sang as God created the world. Elohim simply means any entity in the disembodied spiritual world, which is why scripture uses Elohim for different things, even human spirits such as when the witch at Endor called up Samuel. She says "I see an Elohim rising from the ground." What you have to get through your head is God is IT.... He's the top dog.... He is the sole creator..... but He did make others like Him before He made us. God has a heavenly family, and an earthly one.
A lot of Jewish people don't understand their own roots. They're quick to call that pantheism but there was a concept of it in ancient Judaism called the "two powers in heaven," Yahweh seen and Yahweh unseen. The Old Test is filled with strange language of God being here but also there. God is most certainly also embodied in the Angel of the Lord as well, who Jacob wrestled with. Divine Council is one term for the Elohim. It's all over scripture but we've been trained to exclude the supernatural here in the West.
I also think a lot of Catholics and Protestants balk at the idea, even though it's right there in scripture, because "wait a minute, God alone is the only divine being." Well, before God created man He created everything unseen as well, so in a way, these beings are our elder brothers and sisters (if they have a gender, and they probably don't since they're disembodied spiritual beings). These are the beings that God turned the nations over to after the Babel event. Christ was God's plan to reclaim ALL the nations.

Prophets have always come along critiquing the present conditions of religious leaders which is why they were so often persecuted. Christianity. Now uses the term Co- heirs , not above jews or below jews but equals ,one in the same God. So now they critique each other.

Here is something I have been wrestling with lately.... I am going to be totally honest with no sugar coating because I really want to get some sort of answer to this conundrum... Does anybody out there have any thoughts about the Jesus/Legion story where Jesus sent the demons into 2000ish pigs? I have never heard a good take on it (I have heard takes, but never a good one, usually a lot of jumping through hoops... Most come up empty and small). I mean, did Jesus not care about those sentient beings that have the ability to feel pain and suffer (an ability that God put in them!!!)? It is like God is saying, "OK, I created all 2000 of you with the ability to suffer and feel pain... Now I will inflict suffering on you by my actions! Bwahahahaha (evil laugh)!" It just doesn't come off as "Thy Kingdom come" or "wolf will live with the lamb" like. Something seems off. If you saw me drowning 2000 puppies (You can't say puppies are much different than pigs... Sorry, both are equally sentient!), I would have the law called on me and be put in prison, and rightly so! If I just stood by and allowed it, that would be seen as awful too. Again, rightly so!! So, is God love in a holistic sense or not? Does God love, REALLY LOVE, the planet, the nonhumans, and the humans, the whole of the Universe or not? Anything less than this does not seem like actual real feet on the ground good news to me at all. True love, that which God supposedly is, it seems to me, either includes it all or it fails, because anything less is totally inadequate. Love, in the deepest God-like sense, is holistic or it is not. God is love all the time in everything or he is not, and if he is not, is he actually love at all (I am talking in the deepest holistic sense here)? I tend to think Jains have a better take on this subject than Christians because they are consistent with their views on mercy and compassion, even though I am looking into if there is indeed a holistic Christianity that is not just about the me me me of humanity, one that includes ALL, and REALLY includes ALL. Anything less is not real sacred love. Everything, for me anyway, hinges on this conundrum. Last thing.... I have heard some say, "You can't blame Jesus for the pigs drowning." Why not? He did indeed allow it. He did play part in this. He was not some innocent bystander. Did he have to give the demons permission to enter the herd? No, he obviously did not! So, sorry, he did indeed play part in their suffering according to this story. Is this really what God is like?

This is lovely language but there is one point that I want to make: all these are PERSONAL experiences and I don't doubt he is honest about this teachings but my problem still remains: we are all stuck in out OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCES. This is to note that when people say they know THE TRUTH... well, there's the mistake. I love listening to his words. They calm me down, they paint a beautiful picture but that's not my lived experience. It's just another escape.

I have to say that Townsend Hamilton makes a very good point. As Catholics, the defense of human life is our number one concern, from conception to natural death. The USCCB gives five "non-negotiables", abortion being the first, euthanasia the second, embryonic stem cell research the third, homosexual "marriage" the fourth and human cloning the fifth. I have been struggling with Father's statement that we cannot be "single issue" voters -- when of course we must (or, 5-issue voters, as our bishops say is our duty as Catholics). Heaven - The Church Triumphant; Purgatory - The Church Suffering and Earth - The Church Militant. We are non-violent warriors from the time of our Confirmation - The Rosary is our Sword and our Scapular is our shield. Our Lady said at Fatima that "One day, through the Rosary and the Scapular, I will save the world". As to our president's "bad attitude" - well, he's a street fighter, not a politician. He is the first president to focus his eyes clearly on the importance of the most basic of human rights - the right to life - and to actually DO something about it, no matter how he is attacked for it. He has appointed over 187 pro-life judges across the country! And he addressed the March for Life IN PERSON - a FIRST in American history. Let's SUPPORT him for the good he has done and is doing and overlook "attitudes". There is nothing that makes God happier than a converted sinner - and Donald Trump has been a playboy/sinner for a looong time -- let's give him a chance. "There is more joy in Heaven over the conversion of a sinner than of all the just". Donald Trump allows himself to be prayed over every single morning by Christian men and women. Why trash-talk him? Let's join our prayers to theirs!

Let's be honest here..... both male and female politicians can be smug and arrogant. I think it's folly to pick on the "white male" here. We're all getting swept up in dualistic thinking once again. I'm no fan of Trump, but a lot of the worries about him were projected. Hillary can't let him go either. She's just as vindictive. It's not either/or, it's both/and. We all need to learn to laugh at ourselves, men and women, and cherish each other's differences. I'm all for women leaders because I love women, but let's try not to get too swept away in the "white man" hatred. It's going to lead down the same old, same old road..... dualistic mind. Let's also stop pretending that women of color can't have goofy, arrogant ideas too, just like white males. It's the human condition. We always have to pick sides and battle.

You can always find a great and important cause to fight for. There are thousands of them. As a lover of nature, I speak up for protecting Mother Earth. Why aren’t you? Sick..? Or, I am helping the poor and addicted. Why aren’t you? Sick.. Or I am hiding refugees from American bombs, aren’t you? I am fighting and exposing paedophiles, aren’t you? How about the industrial slaughter of animals? Drone bombing weddings in Afghanistan? Denying people healthcare? People who sell people? I can go on endlessly. Come on.. it’s like you are possessed by this ONE single problem, so you can feel righteous and good? Do you can judge others, like Rohr or others who are not involved in YOUR specific battle? It’s ALL ego, I’ll bet.
