I was thinking about adding a either a brass ring or a stainless steel ring to make a better seal.

Also you lose flow from both ends because they are not sealed. So if you could seal at least one end so all fluid flows in the water port.

My Question is being that the Impeller is already shielded, is this mod still required?

Yep, it solved the overheating
