Man i REALLY wanna hear the the tragic backstory of Choppers devil fruit, the standard Hito Hito no mi (if that is what it actually is anyway), cause I could just imagine, it was either born from hundred of years of animals, wishing and dreaming to be human, or even more depressing, 2 centuries of fishmen dreaming of a world where they could live without prejudice, to be a regular human. This new DF stuff could have dark implications, maybe the D Clan is a group of people who over the centuries worked to somehow will a unique devil fruit into existence, and also, who willed the Yami Yami no Mi into existence I wonder?
Personal headcannon is that will has a fundamental power in the One Piece world. Since haki allows people to impart their will on the world, and can directly counter devil fruits, I am perfectly fine believing the combined will of people can create fruits
I just wonder why Brooks, fruit doesn’t fully revive you with your flesh i guess that would be the revive fruit, but going off fullmetal alchemist, the desire to bring people back, or yourself is very strong so i don’t get the specific desire for Brooks, and it’s funny that William, was given the ability to make one that’s pretty spot on rustage predicted it.
@@joshshrum2764 Brooks fruit actually typically does revive you with your flesh intact, but Brook’s soul got lost in the fog and couldn’t find his body for a year or two so his body decomposed into just his bones.
Considering the focuses on haki and inherited wills, that seems quite likely in many cases. Devil fruits don’t even have to be created by a singular entity if that’s the case because the combined willpower for a desire manifests in a fruit. They also may not be created by a “god” they could genuinely have a devil with Brooke having visited Hell. Another neat idea I thought of was the importance of Color of Conquerors. Could it be the will the conquer god? Makes sense. Could also just be power over desire and those with CoC may be those who are the catalysts for the birth of new fruits! I can’t wait to get the answers for some of these because they has to be a connection between the ancient world, CoC, devil fruits and inherited will. Normally I’m scared these things will never get fully fleshed out *AhemBleach* when a series is nearing its end but Goat-Oda has continuously delivered powerful results.
perhaps the way to awaken a devil fruit is to actually match the original dream of it's creator. Like it's not some special training or meditation, but just finally fulfilling the desire of the creator of the fruit
I do feel like there are some requirements such as being physically and mentally strong to awaken it. Most of the awakened fruits we've seen have strong users. And that's probably because the fruit will overwhelm you if you aren't strong enough.
That makes a pretty large assumption, it's more likely DF require massive amounts of desire to be created. This would of course mean that millions or at least thousands of people would need to desire something in order for a fruit to be created and obviously they wouldn't all have the same dreams.

I thought this exact thing! Which is why luffy's Haki will be paramount for him beating blackbeard/imu. Blackbeard (and to a lesser extent imu) are the pinnacle of desire and evil ones at that. The desire for power, control, status. Desire to kill, deceive and backstab. Luffy will need to use all of his willpower to overpower these cardinal desires

I like to think it's not that specific. Like with the jacket fruit, the guy/people didn't think "I want to be a jacket" but maybe they thought "I wish I could share my strength with others" and people thinking thoughts like this creates fruits capable of doing these actions. You could think of how that makes tons of possibilites for abilities with more abstract desires. And maybe mankind's advancements in knowledge creates these more advanced abilities or maybe it's the other way around where fruits advance mankind. That's my theory.

Imu backwards is Umi and Umi means both “sea”(Japanese) and “mother”(Arabic) so is the immortal Imu actually the physical embodiment of Mother Ocean trying to force the world into the natural order. In One Piece the government refers to the East Blue as the ideal sea/safest sea and during the East Blue saga every native citizen had never even heard of devil fruits having crazy reactions to seeing Luffy’s fruit power. So the ideal sea is one without devil fruits. Imu’s goal then would likely be a world without devil fruits and because devil fruits will exist so long as humans have desires the only way to eliminate devil fruits is to remove the desires from humans, maybe creating a world not too different from that one book “The Giver” is Imu’s goal. Honestly the removing human desires seems like an impossible plan so I don’t think that’s what Oda would go with but I do think it might be something along these lines.

I was thinking today of a book I once read, "Umi to Dokuyaku," and what the sea meant metaphorically; however, I never put together for One Piece that "Umi" backwards is "Imu." I think in an SBS a long time ago someone asked Oda if humans ever used to be able to fly and Oda said "humans used to be able to fly in the sky until they lost their wings of belief" or something similar. This was not a Canon part of the story and was a joke answer BUT maybe it was hinting at how Oda looks at the One Piece world.
The idea of desires being the source of devil fruits puts Vegapunk's desire to create the internet very fascinating, to be honest. If Devil Fruits are made through combined desire of several people instead of just a single really strong desire, that goes into the idea of the collective subconscious, where everyone's thoughts don't just vanish and instead coalesce "somewhere". If Vegapunk successfully linked everyone's source of knowledge...desires can be communicated even more efficiently than before, and it can be spread. Devil Fruits would probably be made faster as a result, and more complicated ones could arise too.

It makes sense for someone to wish for even fruits like the Jacket Jacket Fruit, when looking into it deeper the jacket fruit actually has very little to do with jackets, it was really about taking over someone else's physical attributes, I would think someone such as a sick boy or a paraplegic would be desiring that power. Also, the Buki/Weapon fruit already shown that abilities changes with the times, otherwise Baby Five would have access to light sabers, plasma launcher and nuclear weapons, yet she can (so far) only have access to period weaponry, implies that she can only manifest weapons in that she herself has knowledge of (or better yet weapons that is within the public collective consciousness). In fact, that might be the reason the WG is so dead set on controlling/wiping history, because some abilities or even devil fruits themselves can be erased if no one remember them and thus the desire of them vanished, makes you wonder about Dr. Hiluluk's and Roger's words, that people only truly die if they are forgotten. As for Gods existing, well we knew that souls and even hell, thus the supernaturally powerful forces beyond the physical world, actually exist in the One Piece world shown through Brook's abilities, and what is a God (when not a creator God) but powerful entities beyond human understanding.

It now makes sense why there can be Devil Frutis (or maybe we should start calling them Dream Fruits) that are based on specific people. When the Ancient Kingdom fell, many people will have desired the return of Nika, and that will be how the Nika fruit came into existence. But this also suggests that not every Human Human fruit has to be based on a specific person. Maybe a Fishman or a Mink desired to just become a human in general, and thats how Chopers type of Human fruit came to be

I think the jacket jacket fruit stemmed by someone's desire to be able to control the body of another person. Maybe the person was really weak and scrawny, and they saw other stronger people and wished that he could just use their bodies while still having his own. Maybe that person saw other people with better physical abilities and believed they would do much better with those physical abilities than the other person.
I think the jacket fruit is a simple idea, and would be a simple desire. Imagine you’re out camping with your significant other and some unfortunate events happen, and you were left in the cold. You couldn’t get a fire going, and your partner was freezing. The only thing you want in the whole world is to transfer your warmth to them to surround them and protect them like a jacket would… or something like that.

Oda has a nice flow between fruits and haki growth. Haki gets sprinkled around early on in one piece as we learn about fruits. Marine ford and amazon lily bring out haki a lot more forward the we see Blackbeard get two fruits and awakening gets spoken about in impel down. Part 2 doffy officially says his fruit is awakened and we officially get the three forms of haki in the start. Then as we go on oda does great work keeping the flow so both sides keep getting stronger with wano showing how king's haki can be used and now egghead island vegapunk goes into the fruit power origins

That's what we call an exception to the rule but not really due to that being the literal affect if his fruit to begin with. Blackbeard is more so his body that allows the extra fruits rather than the fruit itself being the solution as the Yami fruit absorbs everything

Also, gives another twist to the fact that the "Gomu Gomu no mi" fruit itself has a way of evading those who would try to abuse its power. If it is the embodiment of people's desire for freedom, the fruit itself can never be kept bounded or restricted since it is freedom incarnate in a sense. I like the idea of Haki being effective against df powers, by virtue of Haki being a representation of one's will. But it would also explain why Luffy is able to draw others to himself - his main "ability" according to Mihawk. Luffy has such laser-focused desires (food and friendship/family) and he's always been strong-willed (stubborn). So when you have someone with such strong desires and the will to enact those desires, you have someone who impacts others so strongly (sort of like gravity in JJBA, you can't fight it); you just get influenced according to the person's will and desire. Also, the D in OP might stand for Desire. Perhaps the D Clan were composed of people with such strong wills and desires that they could collectively manifest devil fruits for the sake of advancing the world. And it might explain why there isn't necessarily a blood relation across D folks; just the common characteristic of being strong-willed and having great desirous natures.
The blacksmith's and samurai of Wano have a long history of imparting their haki, their will, their ryuo into swords, sometimes permanently in the form of black blades or the curses on the kitetsu blades. Additionally, conquerors haki has a tendency, as seen in its clashes, to spark the creation of elements or forces. It's my headcannon that in the past, humans formulated their own unique distinct powers using conquerors haki and the devil fruits are the will or spirit of these haki powers made manifest by whoever made these powers in the same way as the swordsmen and smiths.
Surely, in their wish to be free from Kaido, the people of Wano had enough collective desire to fuel the creation of a devil fruit. Maybe that's what was used to make Momo's dragon zoan. Wouldn't it be funny if the reason Vegapunk couldn't get the color right is because the people of Wano like the color pink a lot?
I like the idea that the Celestial Dragons all used to actually have dragon fruits if only for the fact that it makes the concept behind Tequila Wolf so much more poignant and ironic. A Celestial Dragon back in the day, some 700 years ago, was like, “Hey, build a bridge to that island hundreds of miles across the ocean so I may one day take a carriage ride over there.” Despite the fact that they could literally just fly there any time they wanted with their fruit.

This lore makes a lot of sense to me as an Elder Scrolls fan. Gods in that lore get power from mythopoetic forces, meaning that faith and desire associated with them gives them strength and presence in the world
i have always subscribed to the theory that devil fruits evolve between reincarnations creating subsets of new devil fruits based on the how the user used the fruit before they died. for example let say there was the original devil fruit which was the power of imagination or to creat anything and then when that person dies the fruit splits between what the original power was and what he did with it. creating a new fruit based on his own personality(will/haki) and that process would repate with every new reincarnation resulting random devil fruits being made.
Zoans (non-mythical) might not even come from human desires, as it was said (in a SBS I think) if someone ate the same species fruit as themselves, they would become the perfect/ideal specimen of that species, so it makes sense for a dog to envision an ideal form of a dog as a model to pursuit, and thus borne the Dog Dog Fruit.

Still I think we should keep in mind that this entire explanation of DF is a hypothesis by Vega Punk. He didn’t explain how he came to this conclusion. I’m not saying he’s completely wrong but he might be missing some points.
It is correct in what he is saying. It's just that he doesn't grasp that Devil fruits are actually the manifestations of people's dreams. The infinite possibilities of the imagination of people. It comes from the world of dreams based on Sandman mythos. Blackbeard says people's dreams never end. GOld Roger's quote in chapter 100, Inherited will,one's dreams, the ebb and flow of time, as long as people hunger for freedom these things will exist.
Also I think there is an interesting aspect to this, and that’s children. Children have the best imaginations and could be considered the ones with the most desires so that they would play with each other and pretend to be things. Pretend to have super powers and wish that they had these things. And this can loop back to Luffy and this Sun God. Where their powers is being able to fight anyway they can imagine. Like, that sounds like something a kid would dream of. Or someone as innocent as a child could dream of becoming. And that’s why it needed someone like Luffy (who’s basically as innocent as a child, let’s be real here), and that it takes someone like him to unlock the true potential of this Devil fruit?
Also, I read human desire as plural human. Like the powers manifest from culmination of a groups dreams or result from the synchronization of seperate individuals on a belief. So common fetishes probably do have a representation in devil fruits. And to answer how the jacket fruit became a thing you can go two routes. The desire to have other people attributes or the desire to protect and warm another person.
What’s really sad is that choppers devil fruit probably came into existence because some fishmen wanted to become human so that they would be treated equally
What I love about this desire explanation is that if the desire has to specifically be human desire, then this means enough people had the desire/want that their pet dogs/cats/etc be able to turn into humans so they could become best friends.
Personally I feel the Jacket Jacket Fruit is a representation of envy. I imagine there weren’t a bunch of people wishing to be a jacket, but rather they envied someone else’s body or looks or wished to be them and this manifested in many ways such as Bon Clays Clone Clone Fruit, Catarina Devon’s mythical Inu Inu fruit and everyone’s favorite Jacket Jacket Fruit. Someone in the past could have been similar to Kelly Funk who wishes they were born with someone else’s strength or speed, this created the Jacket Jacket fruit which would allow them to take over their body and control them. Of course it seems to need a willing second party but my point still stands.
Here's a crazy idea I've had for a while; what if the reason we never see or hear of any Fish-Fish Fruits apart from Kaido's Azure Dragon model is because the entire "line" of those Zoan Devil Fruits was somehow sacrificed to transform the ancestors of the Fishmen and Merfolk from humans permanently into Fishmen and Merfolk? They've forfeited the shapechanging ability for being stuck in hybrid form permanently, but they've also gained the aquatic animal traits and baseline strength boost common to all Zoans, as well as losing the Devil Fruit sea vulnerability. It even offers something of an explanation for why fishman/merfolk genes are so random in what aquatic animal they represent.
I dont think a lot of people have been noticing the actual meaning of the "devil fruit origin" being people desires, but Vegapunk's theory is also a 4th Wall break nod to the origin to the abillities in real life. Oda simply wants a cool or weird power so he makes a fruit, and thats what Vegapunk said, he is writing more about his own creative process than other aspects. So what he said in this chapter could be expanded later and be more different. What he said could also be refering to the fact that these abilities are artificial, because its "Human desire to evolve" and "Anti Natural". Vegapunk has stated only his hypothesis (theory in a common sense term) like he said, which like any hypothesis is almost certainly wrong in certain ways. His explanation is also totally paradoxical with his previous objectives and him being a scientist. You would expect him to be more interested in this origin than he seens to show and to give a more logical approach to the origin of this clearly physical power instead of giving a metaphysical explanation. So, his full hypothesis may be even more complex and what he said is a simplification. I based what i commented here on the new video of Ohara. I would be sad if the origin of fruits was so spontaneous like that, its too simple and kinda boring. Hidden Island take on Shintoism and the Ancient Civilization or a complete scientific approach, since Vegapunk will be around, would be far more interesting to me.
Vegapunk's hypothesis is what we call dreams. A dimension where x could happen or y could happen. Infinite things that could happen in human imagination. It all lies in dreams. It is like Blackbeard has said. People's dreams have no end.

This points to the theory of Hidden Island that Lineage Factor is not the core ingredient of every fruit, and it only makes you able to replicate the fruits of living beings, the zoans. This gives an deeper insight on the process of creating devil fruits, and it doesnt connect really well to what Vegapunk said, what he said doesnt explain why his technique of Zoan Cloning is perfect. What he uses instead of SAD? Or how he applied the Lineage Factor into Momo's Fruit. Ceasar method of creating Smiles makes things even worse, because it doesnt allow transformations and 9/10 fruits become failures. Why would the "Mother Ocean" hate the victims of Smile fruits that didnt get any powers? This clearly points to the possibility that the "sea weakness" and the powers of fruits arent as linked as people say. "Dreams" didnt created the Smiles, SAD did, and SAD is just a DNA pool and maybe radiation (bc of the symbol in Punk Hazard). Honestly, whats more impressive about these artificial fruits is the ability to transfer this core ingredient to apples and such. A similiar technique must be how Vegapunk feeds objects with Devil Fruits powers and maybe even how Blackbeard steals powers.
Wonder if Choppers Hito Hito no Mi was the result of an animal desiring to be like a human. On the other hand are we sure its really desire or rather the will that forms into a fruit. And thats the reason Haki can circumvent some of the fruit abilities

I wonder how desire, will, ambition, and dreams all will play into how DF's are created. It could be that Haki is related to the creation of Devil fruits. Heck maybe the island of dreams that Norland decided to look for (after Luffy solve the mystery of the golden city for him) is the ancient kingdom, which is why the name of the ancient kingdom is so dangerous for people to hear about. People would question why the WG would want to destroy the island of dreams. (I think I read this theory somewhere a long time ago somewhere.) Building off of that theory maybe the real name for Devil fruits is Dream Fruits and the WG changed it. Maybe the D. stands for Dreamer or Dream.

I understood this scene different! Yes he told that the fruits where created of people desires BUT as I understand he talks about the motivation and not the process! What I mean is: the old people of the lost kingdom diseres some special abilities and powers (maybe not even for war, but just for usefulness or even for fun) and they created them artificialy because of their disere for them, so the desire is just the motivation but there is a technology behind it. And yes Vegapunk did recreate the devilfruit already BUT I am pretty sure he can not create new ones, he has desire for new powers, maybe a fruit that can give everyone free energy BUT because this fruit is not created yet he is stuck with not able to fulfill his dream.
So, I had a theory about this new devil fruit lore. If the fruits exist because people want them to exist, does that mean that each respective devil fruit user is chosen by their fruit to wield them, instead of it being pure coincidence? Remember, Kaku states that he loves giraffes and thinks they're cool, and he just so happens to get the giraffe devil fruit. And we've been told that zoan fruits have wills of their own, so maybe the giraffe fruit specifically sought out Kaku to be its new wielder?

I always thought that Devil Fruits came from the collective imagination of the inhabitants of the One Piece world. It's the only explanation as to why there are fruits that give you powers like baby 5's. I was thinking that Haki played a big role in their existence, but I'm not too sure anymore with the possible connection to a deity.

The final villain will be IMU (which when read backward is UMI, japanese language for sea). I think Imu is trying to use the world government to suppress the desire of the people so that devil fruit will disappear from the world, returning it to natural evolution. That's why Rayleigh said to Robin that there might be different answer for everyone about the true history. Will you choose to live in natural world or the supernatural world brought to life by the desire of the ancient kingdom people...
Shikamaru's desire to be a cloud could have become one of the most powerful DF I think,the possibilities of a cloud are Insane...if only he was in One Piece
Honestly, I think gods have to be involved at this point. The main theme of the story that Oda seems to be going for is will vs fate. I like where this is heading so far.

My theory: Haki is based on the user's personal Will, Devil fruits are the manifestation core desires (Can be mix of them)of the world; Nika = Liberation; the String fruit = control the world like a puppet master; Sugar's = play with/control others like toys, Ace's fire fruit = Watch the world burn/control flames base on history of flames; ...etc. Kaido's statement of how Haki is the only thing that matters = the users will this the main Stat whin comparing all of the major players or people in the world. Devil fruits and Swords are another tool that the players or people can use. Moves and gears/modes of the players are based on their will and imagination to express their will thru attacks. Awakening and Black blades are based on how much their will/haki sync and work with the desires of their fruits or swords. This causes a power boost to the user that amplifies their haki (still the major element in the boost) Zoans fruits are known to have wills of their own and users may lose their minds when awakening because they do not have the stronger will then the fruit. Because of this the the Nika Nika fruit was hard to find and even harder to awaken as most wills of pirates and people do not sync with the Desire of Liberation. This also explains why so main characters in One Piece seem to have personality traits that match their fruits, the fruits and users are fated to link up to meet in a vague way. The will of D (Desire?) is base on people that have been imbue with the will/haki of past generations/mentors, because of this they likely will have stronger then average Haki, and when paired with the right Devil Fruit have the highest possibilities to awaken and become key players in the world.
Tekking I think your forgetting that the first fruit ever is definitely a paramecia, and that fruit is Burgess Strength Strength Fruit. That’s definitely the most basic power most people would wish for, especially ancient humans.
Just a thought... could people with powers that weren't devilfruit eaters like Ms. Goldenweek's colors trap still be related then? like could they just be the originator of the fruit? meaning upon their death would there be a Color Color fruit/ Iro-Iro no-mi? alot to think about. For the jacket fruit, its probably the desire to protect someone. Like a suit of armour, I doubt it has to literally be the exact example, just the vague desire. "I wish i could fly". "I wish I was immune to fire". "I wish I was strong".
Nice "A Devil Fruit Encyclopedia" you have, a shame it is the newest edition, it lacks greatly compared to the older ones. I am pretty sure that even Great Historian Blackbeard misread said new edition when trying to find a purple, roundish fruit full of spirals that is rumoured to give the user the power of a god. It was quite a fortunate mistake if it ever was one as Blackbeard managed to find solace in the fruit he found and even great success with its powers.
My theory for now is that creating devil fruits requires extremely strong wills. Thus, a fruit is created if: 1) a fruit does not grant a desired ability yet, and 2) a person with conqueror’s haki desires it. This would explain why not a ton of devil fruits exist, and why conqueror’s haki users are even more powerful than what we’ve seen so far.

Also, you’d imagine with the OnePiece world being made up of about 99% water….that there would be a lot more water-related desires (be a mermaid, breathe under water, swim super fast) but that completely contradicts devil fruits. And we’ve yet to see any fish man devil fruit
I like to think that not just one person can desire a devil fruit into existence. Like with slaves at Marijoa, lots of them shared the same desire. And that is also how objects can "eat" devil fruits, that a person has a desire that this object shall have this ability.

I dont think the idea of devil fruits coming into existence specifically because of peoples desires is something meant to be taken literally. Like people wishing they could fly and that though being magically turned into a fruit. I thinks its more akin to people wishing they could get around fast so they invented the car, or wishing they could fly so they invented the plane, ect.

My theory is that the true peak of the ancient kingdom was the realization and actuation of people's desires. Nika's true gift to the world was the manifestation of his kingdom's desires as devil fruits. Nika's power's are true imagination, and what fits that more than creating fruits to manifest the wishes of your people? I'm starting to think that the reason the WG wanted Nika and the ancient kingdom gone is because they were the ones creating devil fruits and it scared the 20 kingdoms into eradicating the nation. However, they couldn't eliminate the fruits and the wishes of the people that they embody so the fruits continue to manifest because the dreams of the ancient kingdom don't die when the user does.
There clearly has to be some xtra factor between desire to DF, otherwise more DFs would still be getting created. Now something I've been thinking, what if there was a tree that took in the desire of humanity and produced DFs as a result? And since Elbaf and Giants are based on Norse mythology, what if that tree is Yggdrasil? Yggdrasil takes desire, and produces DFs. And what if Yggdrasil was destroyed in the void century?

So Tekking just wondering if you have heard the theory that this weeks cover story page has started, that the ship that Franky uses to rebuild his body after being hit by the Sea Train was the MADS ship seen in the over story. I mean the time line does work out that MADS would have been disbanded for at least several years at the point of Franky's flash back and likely the ship would have been sent from Enies Lobby to Water Seven to be decommissioned and scrapped, but was caught in that years Aqua Laguna storm and was lost to sea until Franky was thrown onto it. It could explain how he was able to build/find the tech to produce basic cybernetic parts as Queen's tech may have still been left on the ship. The ship (as seen in chapter 358) does have the same general shape and appearance to the one we see in 1069 but with a modern Oda redesign.

I think with the thought of the Nika-Nika fruit being possibly being the desire of the slaves to smile or laugh again. It could be that the smile fruits have the dna of luffys devil fruit forcing them to have to laugh or smile.
I said this in the chapter review but it’s the treasure tree adam which is connected to the whole one piece world , this is why the can appear as any fruit anywhere in the world. I mean it reaches to the sea floor to provide light. It takes in desires utter into the world and processes them into concepts and imbues them into fruit.

Supernatural stuff coming from the desire/will or subconsious of people is one of my favorite tropes, concentrated will or imagination or somesuch. I know Neil Gaiman does it alot, in Sandman and in American Gods and probably more stuff. I always like it more than the "magic" coming from one god or alien power.

Personal headcannon is that will has a fundamental power in the One Piece world. Since haki allows people to impart their will on the world, and can directly counter devil fruits, I am perfectly fine believing the combined will of people can create fruits

Considering the focuses on haki and inherited wills, that seems quite likely in many cases. Devil fruits don’t even have to be created by a singular entity if that’s the case because the combined willpower for a desire manifests in a fruit. They also may not be created by a “god” they could genuinely have a devil with Brooke having visited Hell. Another neat idea I thought of was the importance of Color of Conquerors. Could it be the will the conquer god? Makes sense. Could also just be power over desire and those with CoC may be those who are the catalysts for the birth of new fruits! I can’t wait to get the answers for some of these because they has to be a connection between the ancient world, CoC, devil fruits and inherited will. Normally I’m scared these things will never get fully fleshed out *AhemBleach* when a series is nearing its end but Goat-Oda has continuously delivered powerful results.

perhaps the way to awaken a devil fruit is to actually match the original dream of it's creator. Like it's not some special training or meditation, but just finally fulfilling the desire of the creator of the fruit

I do feel like there are some requirements such as being physically and mentally strong to awaken it. Most of the awakened fruits we've seen have strong users. And that's probably because the fruit will overwhelm you if you aren't strong enough.

I thought this exact thing! Which is why luffy's Haki will be paramount for him beating blackbeard/imu. Blackbeard (and to a lesser extent imu) are the pinnacle of desire and evil ones at that. The desire for power, control, status. Desire to kill, deceive and backstab. Luffy will need to use all of his willpower to overpower these cardinal desires

I like to think it's not that specific. Like with the jacket fruit, the guy/people didn't think "I want to be a jacket" but maybe they thought "I wish I could share my strength with others" and people thinking thoughts like this creates fruits capable of doing these actions. You could think of how that makes tons of possibilites for abilities with more abstract desires. And maybe mankind's advancements in knowledge creates these more advanced abilities or maybe it's the other way around where fruits advance mankind. That's my theory.

Imu backwards is Umi and Umi means both “sea”(Japanese) and “mother”(Arabic) so is the immortal Imu actually the physical embodiment of Mother Ocean trying to force the world into the natural order. In One Piece the government refers to the East Blue as the ideal sea/safest sea and during the East Blue saga every native citizen had never even heard of devil fruits having crazy reactions to seeing Luffy’s fruit power. So the ideal sea is one without devil fruits. Imu’s goal then would likely be a world without devil fruits and because devil fruits will exist so long as humans have desires the only way to eliminate devil fruits is to remove the desires from humans, maybe creating a world not too different from that one book “The Giver” is Imu’s goal. Honestly the removing human desires seems like an impossible plan so I don’t think that’s what Oda would go with but I do think it might be something along these lines.

The idea of desires being the source of devil fruits puts Vegapunk's desire to create the internet very fascinating, to be honest. If Devil Fruits are made through combined desire of several people instead of just a single really strong desire, that goes into the idea of the collective subconscious, where everyone's thoughts don't just vanish and instead coalesce "somewhere".
If Vegapunk successfully linked everyone's source of knowledge...desires can be communicated even more efficiently than before, and it can be spread. Devil Fruits would probably be made faster as a result, and more complicated ones could arise too.

It makes sense for someone to wish for even fruits like the Jacket Jacket Fruit, when looking into it deeper the jacket fruit actually has very little to do with jackets, it was really about taking over someone else's physical attributes, I would think someone such as a sick boy or a paraplegic would be desiring that power. Also, the Buki/Weapon fruit already shown that abilities changes with the times, otherwise Baby Five would have access to light sabers, plasma launcher and nuclear weapons, yet she can (so far) only have access to period weaponry, implies that she can only manifest weapons in that she herself has knowledge of (or better yet weapons that is within the public collective consciousness). In fact, that might be the reason the WG is so dead set on controlling/wiping history, because some abilities or even devil fruits themselves can be erased if no one remember them and thus the desire of them vanished, makes you wonder about Dr. Hiluluk's and Roger's words, that people only truly die if they are forgotten. As for Gods existing, well we knew that souls and even hell, thus the supernaturally powerful forces beyond the physical world, actually exist in the One Piece world shown through Brook's abilities, and what is a God (when not a creator God) but powerful entities beyond human understanding.

It now makes sense why there can be Devil Frutis (or maybe we should start calling them Dream Fruits) that are based on specific people.
When the Ancient Kingdom fell, many people will have desired the return of Nika, and that will be how the Nika fruit came into existence.
But this also suggests that not every Human Human fruit has to be based on a specific person. Maybe a Fishman or a Mink desired to just become a human in general, and thats how Chopers type of Human fruit came to be

I think the jacket jacket fruit stemmed by someone's desire to be able to control the body of another person. Maybe the person was really weak and scrawny, and they saw other stronger people and wished that he could just use their bodies while still having his own. Maybe that person saw other people with better physical abilities and believed they would do much better with those physical abilities than the other person.
I think the jacket fruit is a simple idea, and would be a simple desire. Imagine you’re out camping with your significant other and some unfortunate events happen, and you were left in the cold. You couldn’t get a fire going, and your partner was freezing. The only thing you want in the whole world is to transfer your warmth to them to surround them and protect them like a jacket would… or something like that.
Big dumb guy and a smart weak guy... You know if you had my brains and even half your strength we could change the world... It'd be super cool if I could just take all your muscles and put them in my body or if I could somehow control your actions.

Oda has a nice flow between fruits and haki growth.
Haki gets sprinkled around early on in one piece as we learn about fruits. Marine ford and amazon lily bring out haki a lot more forward the we see Blackbeard get two fruits and awakening gets spoken about in impel down.
Part 2 doffy officially says his fruit is awakened and we officially get the three forms of haki in the start. Then as we go on oda does great work keeping the flow so both sides keep getting stronger with wano showing how king's haki can be used and now egghead island vegapunk goes into the fruit power origins

Devil Fruits have Wills & most likely Souls/LineageFactors, that are impacted by previous eaters of that Devil Fruit over time
This would explain why we see characters who have the devil fruit that best suits there personality or their overall skill set
Also, gives another twist to the fact that the "Gomu Gomu no mi" fruit itself has a way of evading those who would try to abuse its power. If it is the embodiment of people's desire for freedom, the fruit itself can never be kept bounded or restricted since it is freedom incarnate in a sense.
I like the idea of Haki being effective against df powers, by virtue of Haki being a representation of one's will. But it would also explain why Luffy is able to draw others to himself - his main "ability" according to Mihawk. Luffy has such laser-focused desires (food and friendship/family) and he's always been strong-willed (stubborn). So when you have someone with such strong desires and the will to enact those desires, you have someone who impacts others so strongly (sort of like gravity in JJBA, you can't fight it); you just get influenced according to the person's will and desire.
Also, the D in OP might stand for Desire. Perhaps the D Clan were composed of people with such strong wills and desires that they could collectively manifest devil fruits for the sake of advancing the world. And it might explain why there isn't necessarily a blood relation across D folks; just the common characteristic of being strong-willed and having great desirous natures.
The blacksmith's and samurai of Wano have a long history of imparting their haki, their will, their ryuo into swords, sometimes permanently in the form of black blades or the curses on the kitetsu blades. Additionally, conquerors haki has a tendency, as seen in its clashes, to spark the creation of elements or forces.
It's my headcannon that in the past, humans formulated their own unique distinct powers using conquerors haki and the devil fruits are the will or spirit of these haki powers made manifest by whoever made these powers in the same way as the swordsmen and smiths.
Surely, in their wish to be free from Kaido, the people of Wano had enough collective desire to fuel the creation of a devil fruit. Maybe that's what was used to make Momo's dragon zoan. Wouldn't it be funny if the reason Vegapunk couldn't get the color right is because the people of Wano like the color pink a lot?
I like the idea that the Celestial Dragons all used to actually have dragon fruits if only for the fact that it makes the concept behind Tequila Wolf so much more poignant and ironic. A Celestial Dragon back in the day, some 700 years ago, was like, “Hey, build a bridge to that island hundreds of miles across the ocean so I may one day take a carriage ride over there.” Despite the fact that they could literally just fly there any time they wanted with their fruit.

This lore makes a lot of sense to me as an Elder Scrolls fan. Gods in that lore get power from mythopoetic forces, meaning that faith and desire associated with them gives them strength and presence in the world
i have always subscribed to the theory that devil fruits evolve between reincarnations creating subsets of new devil fruits based on the how the user used the fruit before they died.
for example let say there was the original devil fruit which was the power of imagination or to creat anything and then when that person dies the fruit splits between what the original power was and what he did with it. creating a new fruit based on his own personality(will/haki) and that process would repate with every new reincarnation resulting random devil fruits being made.

Zoans (non-mythical) might not even come from human desires, as it was said (in a SBS I think) if someone ate the same species fruit as themselves, they would become the perfect/ideal specimen of that species, so it makes sense for a dog to envision an ideal form of a dog as a model to pursuit, and thus borne the Dog Dog Fruit.

It is correct in what he is saying. It's just that he doesn't grasp that Devil fruits are actually the manifestations of people's dreams. The infinite possibilities of the imagination of people. It comes from the world of dreams based on Sandman mythos. Blackbeard says people's dreams never end. GOld Roger's quote in chapter 100, Inherited will,one's dreams, the ebb and flow of time, as long as people hunger for freedom these things will exist.
Also I think there is an interesting aspect to this, and that’s children. Children have the best imaginations and could be considered the ones with the most desires so that they would play with each other and pretend to be things. Pretend to have super powers and wish that they had these things.
And this can loop back to Luffy and this Sun God. Where their powers is being able to fight anyway they can imagine. Like, that sounds like something a kid would dream of. Or someone as innocent as a child could dream of becoming. And that’s why it needed someone like Luffy (who’s basically as innocent as a child, let’s be real here), and that it takes someone like him to unlock the true potential of this Devil fruit?

Also, I read human desire as plural human. Like the powers manifest from culmination of a groups dreams or result from the synchronization of seperate individuals on a belief. So common fetishes probably do have a representation in devil fruits. And to answer how the jacket fruit became a thing you can go two routes. The desire to have other people attributes or the desire to protect and warm another person.
What’s really sad is that choppers devil fruit probably came into existence because some fishmen wanted to become human so that they would be treated equally
What I love about this desire explanation is that if the desire has to specifically be human desire, then this means enough people had the desire/want that their pet dogs/cats/etc be able to turn into humans so they could become best friends.
Personally I feel the Jacket Jacket Fruit is a representation of envy. I imagine there weren’t a bunch of people wishing to be a jacket, but rather they envied someone else’s body or looks or wished to be them and this manifested in many ways such as Bon Clays Clone Clone Fruit, Catarina Devon’s mythical Inu Inu fruit and everyone’s favorite Jacket Jacket Fruit.
Someone in the past could have been similar to Kelly Funk who wishes they were born with someone else’s strength or speed, this created the Jacket Jacket fruit which would allow them to take over their body and control them. Of course it seems to need a willing second party but my point still stands.

Here's a crazy idea I've had for a while; what if the reason we never see or hear of any Fish-Fish Fruits apart from Kaido's Azure Dragon model is because the entire "line" of those Zoan Devil Fruits was somehow sacrificed to transform the ancestors of the Fishmen and Merfolk from humans permanently into Fishmen and Merfolk? They've forfeited the shapechanging ability for being stuck in hybrid form permanently, but they've also gained the aquatic animal traits and baseline strength boost common to all Zoans, as well as losing the Devil Fruit sea vulnerability. It even offers something of an explanation for why fishman/merfolk genes are so random in what aquatic animal they represent.
I dont think a lot of people have been noticing the actual meaning of the "devil fruit origin" being people desires, but Vegapunk's theory is also a 4th Wall break nod to the origin to the abillities in real life. Oda simply wants a cool or weird power so he makes a fruit, and thats what Vegapunk said, he is writing more about his own creative process than other aspects. So what he said in this chapter could be expanded later and be more different.
What he said could also be refering to the fact that these abilities are artificial, because its "Human desire to evolve" and "Anti Natural".
Vegapunk has stated only his hypothesis (theory in a common sense term) like he said, which like any hypothesis is almost certainly wrong in certain ways. His explanation is also totally paradoxical with his previous objectives and him being a scientist. You would expect him to be more interested in this origin than he seens to show and to give a more logical approach to the origin of this clearly physical power instead of giving a metaphysical explanation. So, his full hypothesis may be even more complex and what he said is a simplification.
I based what i commented here on the new video of Ohara. I would be sad if the origin of fruits was so spontaneous like that, its too simple and kinda boring. Hidden Island take on Shintoism and the Ancient Civilization or a complete scientific approach, since Vegapunk will be around, would be far more interesting to me.

This points to the theory of Hidden Island that Lineage Factor is not the core ingredient of every fruit, and it only makes you able to replicate the fruits of living beings, the zoans.
This gives an deeper insight on the process of creating devil fruits, and it doesnt connect really well to what Vegapunk said, what he said doesnt explain why his technique of Zoan Cloning is perfect. What he uses instead of SAD? Or how he applied the Lineage Factor into Momo's Fruit.
Ceasar method of creating Smiles makes things even worse, because it doesnt allow transformations and 9/10 fruits become failures. Why would the "Mother Ocean" hate the victims of Smile fruits that didnt get any powers? This clearly points to the possibility that the "sea weakness" and the powers of fruits arent as linked as people say. "Dreams" didnt created the Smiles, SAD did, and SAD is just a DNA pool and maybe radiation (bc of the symbol in Punk Hazard).
Honestly, whats more impressive about these artificial fruits is the ability to transfer this core ingredient to apples and such. A similiar technique must be how Vegapunk feeds objects with Devil Fruits powers and maybe even how Blackbeard steals powers.

Yes he told that the fruits where created of people desires BUT as I understand he talks about the motivation and not the process! What I mean is: the old people of the lost kingdom diseres some special abilities and powers (maybe not even for war, but just for usefulness or even for fun) and they created them artificialy because of their disere for them, so the desire is just the motivation but there is a technology behind it.
And yes Vegapunk did recreate the devilfruit already BUT I am pretty sure he can not create new ones, he has desire for new powers, maybe a fruit that can give everyone free energy BUT because this fruit is not created yet he is stuck with not able to fulfill his dream.
So, I had a theory about this new devil fruit lore. If the fruits exist because people want them to exist, does that mean that each respective devil fruit user is chosen by their fruit to wield them, instead of it being pure coincidence? Remember, Kaku states that he loves giraffes and thinks they're cool, and he just so happens to get the giraffe devil fruit. And we've been told that zoan fruits have wills of their own, so maybe the giraffe fruit specifically sought out Kaku to be its new wielder?

I always thought that Devil Fruits came from the collective imagination of the inhabitants of the One Piece world. It's the only explanation as to why there are fruits that give you powers like baby 5's. I was thinking that Haki played a big role in their existence, but I'm not too sure anymore with the possible connection to a deity.
The presence of the Hito Hito no mi makes me think that humans are not the only ones able to dream and create devil fruits

Honestly, I think gods have to be involved at this point. The main theme of the story that Oda seems to be going for is will vs fate. I like where this is heading so far.

My theory: Haki is based on the user's personal Will, Devil fruits are the manifestation core desires (Can be mix of them)of the world; Nika = Liberation; the String fruit = control the world like a puppet master; Sugar's = play with/control others like toys, Ace's fire fruit = Watch the world burn/control flames base on history of flames; ...etc. Kaido's statement of how Haki is the only thing that matters = the users will this the main Stat whin comparing all of the major players or people in the world. Devil fruits and Swords are another tool that the players or people can use. Moves and gears/modes of the players are based on their will and imagination to express their will thru attacks. Awakening and Black blades are based on how much their will/haki sync and work with the desires of their fruits or swords. This causes a power boost to the user that amplifies their haki (still the major element in the boost) Zoans fruits are known to have wills of their own and users may lose their minds when awakening because they do not have the stronger will then the fruit. Because of this the the Nika Nika fruit was hard to find and even harder to awaken as most wills of pirates and people do not sync with the Desire of Liberation. This also explains why so main characters in One Piece seem to have personality traits that match their fruits, the fruits and users are fated to link up to meet in a vague way. The will of D (Desire?) is base on people that have been imbue with the will/haki of past generations/mentors, because of this they likely will have stronger then average Haki, and when paired with the right Devil Fruit have the highest possibilities to awaken and become key players in the world.
Tekking I think your forgetting that the first fruit ever is definitely a paramecia, and that fruit is Burgess Strength Strength Fruit. That’s definitely the most basic power most people would wish for, especially ancient humans.
Just a thought... could people with powers that weren't devilfruit eaters like Ms. Goldenweek's colors trap still be related then? like could they just be the originator of the fruit? meaning upon their death would there be a Color Color fruit/ Iro-Iro no-mi? alot to think about.

For the jacket fruit, its probably the desire to protect someone. Like a suit of armour, I doubt it has to literally be the exact example, just the vague desire. "I wish i could fly". "I wish I was immune to fire". "I wish I was strong".

I am pretty sure that even Great Historian Blackbeard misread said new edition when trying to find a purple, roundish fruit full of spirals that is rumoured to give the user the power of a god. It was quite a fortunate mistake if it ever was one as Blackbeard managed to find solace in the fruit he found and even great success with its powers.

My theory for now is that creating devil fruits requires extremely strong wills. Thus, a fruit is created if: 1) a fruit does not grant a desired ability yet, and 2) a person with conqueror’s haki desires it. This would explain why not a ton of devil fruits exist, and why conqueror’s haki users are even more powerful than what we’ve seen so far.

Also, you’d imagine with the OnePiece world being made up of about 99% water….that there would be a lot more water-related desires (be a mermaid, breathe under water, swim super fast) but that completely contradicts devil fruits. And we’ve yet to see any fish man devil fruit

I dont think the idea of devil fruits coming into existence specifically because of peoples desires is something meant to be taken literally. Like people wishing they could fly and that though being magically turned into a fruit. I thinks its more akin to people wishing they could get around fast so they invented the car, or wishing they could fly so they invented the plane, ect.
Maybe the jacket fruit was just the desire of "I want to keep a beloved person warm" in the cold and sometimes dreams and desires came out in weird ways.

My theory is that the true peak of the ancient kingdom was the realization and actuation of people's desires. Nika's true gift to the world was the manifestation of his kingdom's desires as devil fruits. Nika's power's are true imagination, and what fits that more than creating fruits to manifest the wishes of your people? I'm starting to think that the reason the WG wanted Nika and the ancient kingdom gone is because they were the ones creating devil fruits and it scared the 20 kingdoms into eradicating the nation. However, they couldn't eliminate the fruits and the wishes of the people that they embody so the fruits continue to manifest because the dreams of the ancient kingdom don't die when the user does.
There clearly has to be some xtra factor between desire to DF, otherwise more DFs would still be getting created.
Now something I've been thinking, what if there was a tree that took in the desire of humanity and produced DFs as a result? And since Elbaf and Giants are based on Norse mythology, what if that tree is Yggdrasil? Yggdrasil takes desire, and produces DFs. And what if Yggdrasil was destroyed in the void century?
I wonder if we'll get a good explanation of how Vegapunk managed to make the artificial fruits, how do the lineage factor and this desire interact with eachother?

So Tekking just wondering if you have heard the theory that this weeks cover story page has started, that the ship that Franky uses to rebuild his body after being hit by the Sea Train was the MADS ship seen in the over story. I mean the time line does work out that MADS would have been disbanded for at least several years at the point of Franky's flash back and likely the ship would have been sent from Enies Lobby to Water Seven to be decommissioned and scrapped, but was caught in that years Aqua Laguna storm and was lost to sea until Franky was thrown onto it. It could explain how he was able to build/find the tech to produce basic cybernetic parts as Queen's tech may have still been left on the ship. The ship (as seen in chapter 358) does have the same general shape and appearance to the one we see in 1069 but with a modern Oda redesign.

I think with the thought of the Nika-Nika fruit being possibly being the desire of the slaves to smile or laugh again. It could be that the smile fruits have the dna of luffys devil fruit forcing them to have to laugh or smile.
I said this in the chapter review but it’s the treasure tree adam which is connected to the whole one piece world , this is why the can appear as any fruit anywhere in the world. I mean it reaches to the sea floor to provide light.

Supernatural stuff coming from the desire/will or subconsious of people is one of my favorite tropes, concentrated will or imagination or somesuch. I know Neil Gaiman does it alot, in Sandman and in American Gods and probably more stuff.
