Before there was Taylor Swift there was Debbie Gibson. Writing, Producing, playing keyboard and singing a Billboard Number One Single at age 16.
Debbie's songs at 16 were more mature than Taylor Swift ever imagined. Sad that people don't talk about Deb more!
If it wasn’t for Debbie Gibson, there would be no Taylor Swift or a lot of other artists. Before Debbie came along, it was unheard of for a woman to write, produce and record their own music completely on their own let alone one that was only 16 years old. She paved the way.
A lot of people didn't give Debbie Gibson enough credit. She was a very talented young woman. She wrote all of her songs and she was a teenager at the time.
One of her singles, "Foolish Beat" made her the youngest female artist to write, produce, and perform a single that went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She had a great voice. I had a crush on her back then too. You guys should check out "Lost in Your Eyes" and ”Shake Your Love” as well as ”Foolish Beat”.
You had a crush on her too?. :-) Fun times.
Who didn't lol @@jonesyokc
Why would you ask them to check out a song "Lost In Your Eyes" that they had already completed 6 months before your comment? Do you know how to search content?
Teen queen of the late 80's, but also multitalented. Played piano since age 5 and wrote her own songs since age 6. There are lots of songs from her to dive deep guys. 😎
Hard to believe Debbie is 52 years old now. My how time fly's.
She's turning 53 in a few days. 🙂
Seems like she was just 17🥹
She takes care of herself though, she looks great.
She had some amazing songs. Definitely check out "Only in My Dreams," "Out of the Blue," "Foolish Beat," "Lost in Your Eyes" and she also did an amazing version of "On My Own" from Les Miserables. Also as far as theater, she also played Sandy in "Grease" and did all those songs on the London Cast Album. Lots of great choices from her.
They've already done lost in your eyes of course
That was the one I was trying to remember, "Out of the Blue". It was her other major hit here in the UK. She was a really good fresh faced act at the time. Debbie and Tiffany were the Britney and Christina of their day.
Debbie Gibson was the teen pop star of the 80's... What made her special was that she wrote all her songs and co-produced her albums... At 16, she wrote all the songs on her 1987 debut album 'Out of the blue'... She scored a #1 hit single 'Foolish beat' in 1988 while still a teen.
'Electric Youth' was her 2nd album in 1989 and also charted at #1 and sold 2x platinum in the US... and scored another #1 single - 'Lost in your eyes' (another ballad). She also wrote all the songs and co-produced again.
Her 3rd album 'Anything is possible' went gold, but she co-wrote w/ songwriters and was losing the teen pop appeal as she turned 20... the single 'Anything is possible' was still a top 40 hit... Debbie tried to appeal to an adult audience w/ sex appeal and a sultry image which Britney Spears would perfect a decade later, but the 4th album 'Body, mind, soul' (1993) flopped commercially... She tried again w/ the albums 'Think with your heart' in 1995, and 'Deborah' in 1997... Neither albums sold well.
Debbie Gibson was able to become a successful Broadway stage actress and singer in later years and still records and performs to date.
Not like the XFactor clowns of today.
Copy and paste? Coralatimg Gibson with a whore like Spears on anything is s disturbing.
Do you remember the Electric Youth fragrance that was sold upon the release of the album?
She was big!
I remember finding Body Mind, Soul in the bargain bin at Wal Mart. I was a big fan in her early days so I bought it for $3.99. Wasn't her best album... But still had some good stuff.
@@macmcgee5116hii😊
Debbie's birthday is next week, August 31st. She was my cousins neighbor when we were kids in Merrick, Long Island. She went on to perform on Broadway, and played Sandy in Greece, which I know you loved the movie. She is the youngest female to ever write, produce and sing a number 1 song.
A record that hasn't been broken
Paula Abdul herself actually choreographed this video. The song was popular right around the time that Paula hit big with "Straight Up."
I was just about to say the same, I didn’t know until I looked it up,but suspected that Paula had something to do with it.
@@timhutchinson8485 Same. It is so Paula.
It was actually Barry Lather that choreographed this video
and he was your uncle?@@tenngirl1976
@@tenngirl1976 ohhhh, Paula choreographed "Shake Your Love" looks like! Oops!
You're in TN? I grew up in the Tri-Cities!
I was in High School in the 80s, literally finished Grade 12 in 1990, and a mate of mine was OBSSESSED with Debbie Gibson, particularly this song! Wow it's like a time machine hearing this and going back to those days, which were brilliant!
Same. Class of ‘90. 😎
@@gabrielmcdonnell8699 Yep, me too! 1990.
Debbie Gibsons was a huge 80's Pop Star. One of my favorites is "Only in my Dreams." 🎹
Debbie has always been one of my faves. Years ago when she was in Sydney Australia, I was just a star struck teenager and I was out the front of her hotel and she kissed me! Greatest day of my life!❤
I Love this girl. Please do more songs by her. She is just great.
She was the 89’s IT girl of pop. This is one of my favourite songs by her.
Debbie gibson was a p g version of britney spears
Tell me why not
Tonya Tanya. That's right, don't you talk, or she doesn't. Song called
Tanya Tucker, she's a pretty baby. I've seen it. Never song that song let me lock you used to with me😅😅😅😅😅
@@allendixon7700 no she was not, Debbie and Britney do not compare, end of story
I am a Debbie Gibson fan. This tune cool but like Foolish Beat , Lost in your Eyes . Very talented young girl
The two guys in the front are her choreographers! I don’t know if they worked with Janet! But Debbie was a triple threat! She was the youngest artist to ever write, produce and perform her own music and have it go to #1!! You need to check out Shake Your Love, Out Of The Blue, Only In My Dreams, & Foolish Beat!! She was my everything when I was younger!!!
You should react to Foolish Beat next. That single went to number one on US Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1988, giving her the record at that time for the youngest person to write, produce, and perform a number-one single entirely on her own, at age 17. Very talented!
The choreographer was Barry Lather, who appeared in Janet Jackson’s “Nasty” video (the guy who jumps off the newsstand to dance with her). He also choreographed Jackson’s video “Pleasure Principle”. He worked with a who’s-who of stars in that era, including Paula Abdul and Michael Jackson. I got to take a few dance classes from him as a teen because his mother and my dance teacher were friends. He was a super-nice guy and amazingly talented!!!! He released his own single, “Love in the 3rd Degree” and his video choreography hits just the same.
Jay & Amber, you'll love her "Only in My Dreams" and "Shake Your Love"!!
Been a long time since you've done Leann Rimes. Leann's "How Do I Live" is outstanding!
I still like this one 😊 If I remember correctly she had a perfume in the stores called " Electric Youth" as well 😺 " Only in my Dreams" is another good one by Debbie Gibson. Her first hit
Debbie is STILL tearing up the stage, nearly 40 years later. And she's even more stunningly beautiful than ever!!
She was my first huge concert. Lost in Your Eyes, Out of the Blue, No More Rhyme, & Foolish Beat are good.
She headlined an 80s concert tour including Tiffany, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Berlin, Erasure, Club Nouveau, & the Pointer Sisters. It was great. There’s a 90s tour too. You guys should look out for them.
Me too 😂

Loved her so much. We’re about the same age. She was on Broadway for many years following her peak stardom. That’s how talented she is. I met her after a show where she was Belle in Beauty and the Beast. She was so sweet and kind.
Debbie Gibson has done so many plays. At two different times she has played Sandy and Rizzo in Grease. She been in Les Miserable, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Reality TV on The Apprentice, Dancing with the Stars, Skating with the Stars, The Masked Singer. She’s amazing.
OMG I was so in love with Debbie...she's still amazing
I'm just 6 months older than she is. She was 19 when she released this song but released her debut album at 17 so as a fellow teen, it was so cool to see someone my age who played the piano and wrote her own songs. Check out...Only In My Dreams, Foolish Beat, Shake Your Love, No More Rhyme and Out of the Blue.
With love, I can always count on the same moves when an upbeat tune starts, Amber starts bouncing and Jay turns into a bobblehead. Lol. Love you guys.
Not Just a "Pop Princess" Debbie has appeared on Broadway in "Les Miserables" as Eponine. In "Grease" as Rizzo , in "Funny Girl" as Fanny Brice , Belle in "Beauty and the Beast" , Gypsy Rose Lee in "Gypsy" , Velma Kelly in "Chicago" and, Sally Bowles in "Cabaret"
Debbie Gibson's "Electric Youth" was the follow-up single to her biggest Billboard Hot 100 hit "Lost In Your Eyes" which peaked @ #1 for 3 weeks in early 1989. After 5 singles charting in the Top 10, "Electric Youth" came very close, peaking @ #11 in 1989. "EY" was Gibson's biggest hit on the Dance chart, peaking @ #3.
One of my all time fave ever songs, let alone one from the 80s. Debbie Gibson was amazing xx
Debbie was THE MOMENT for us Gen X girls! In freshman PE class, we had to come up with our own aerobics routines and my group did ours to “Shake Your Love” by Debbie! I also owned Electric Youth perfume! 💜
And the absolute chokehold vests had on me…sigh. 😂
I remember when her and another female singer " Tiffany " had came around the same time. They were both hitting the billboards during that time and kids back then, were going crazy with the sound of the music and like y'all said, the dance moves. Watching y'all's reactions to these 80's videos brings back a lot of memories for me. Glad y'all are having fun reacting to these. Thank you both for " giving the people what they want "! I am blessed just to see y'all smile and having fun with the 80s/90s genre music. Hope y'all have a truly blessed day and weekend! :)
My favorite artist as a teenage girl! Looking back now I had fabulous taste in music at 12! 😂 so multitalented, unique & underrated. Very thankful for her showing all the young ladies you could be yourself & make it ! Love you always DEBBIE , thank you ! So glad y’all enjoyed! Love the Rob squad !!!!!
Love Debbie Gibson! So many other songs to check out! Out Of TheBlue, Only In My Dreams, Shake Your Love, No More Rhyme and Foolish Beat are all great next steps to continue on your Debbie Gibson journey.
She was great! Wrote, produced & sang all her own songs!! Only 15 & 16 years old at her height.
I had a crush on Debbie Gibson...I still have a crush on Debbie Gibson. Wrote her own music, played the piano (though you can't see it on this video), and sang beautifully with a sustained vibrato. At 16, she was (and still is) the youngest artist in history to write, produce and perform a number one hit, "Foolish Beat." If you do "Lost in Your Eyes," you'll get to hear how beautifully she sings and plays piano. Thanks, guys. Will be waiting on the video of Amber doing all the dance moves! :)
Omg yesssssss!!! So talented!! Loooved her!
Must - Foolish Beat ❤
This video is hysterical now after 35ish years. What a great time to be the 9 year old I was. The moves, the fashion and the fun music!!
I had to have her perfume of the same name. Do they still sell it??
This was soooo fun to watch you react to. Party!!! 😂
Any of her first 2 albums songs are great and the videos are sooo nostalgic. She was 16 in Out of the Blue!! Adorable.
Yeah, Gibson was no doubt a very exciting young talent of our generation! Both a great singer and dancer. This song was very popular. She had a number of hits. "Shake your Love" and "Only in My Dreams" are two others I would recommend.
Debbie Gibson was one of the heartthrob artists of teenage boys when I was growing up through in my teen years in the 80s.
You guys were on fire with your music reactions tonight!
thank you guys for reacting on Debbie Gibson she was considerate a music prodigy she was 16 when she released this song but her first single was Only In My Dreams back late 80S also she's a song writer and a producer as well
Debbie is a true talent, still listen to her old stuff and it transports me to my attic bedroom with her posters and her electric youth perfume i got on my 12th birthday 🎉
As a long time fan of Debbie Gibson I would recommend, Shake Your Love, Over the Wall, No More Rhyme. Great reaction J and Amber! You guys were as hyped about this song as I was as a teen😊
She was definitely a favorite of mine in my teens and was privileged to meet her about 10 years ago when she was on Broadway in NYC and she was an absolute sweetheart ❤
She is a sweetheart!!! Have you seen her with the paparazzi??? There's a video of her walking out of a store with her mom, and the pap was bugging them. She talked to them, gave autographs, posed for pics... Most celebs cover their faces, or don't say a thing. That video is on UA-cam, and it makes me love her even more (if that's even possible).
@@BillGraper Oh wow, haven't seen it but I can imagine her doing that because I met her in a Rite Aide pharmacy and she was with 2 other people picking up some stuff for a trip. She noticed me staring at her because I was trying not to freak out and she said hi. We talked a few minutes with me raving about her music and she hugged me goodbye. Yeah, I totally geeked out when she left 🤣
Debbie Gibson and Tiffany were the pop version of rap’s East Coast/West Coast rivalry. Tiffany’s was the very first CD I ever bought, but I was more of a Debbie Gibson fan back in the day.
Paula Abdul did the choreography for this video. Paula actually got her break doing choreography for Janet Jackson before launching her solo career as a singer. You can see Paula in a few Janet Jackson videos...she's featured a lot in both Nasty and What Have You Done For Me Lately? Thanks for the fun reaction!
It was choreographed by Barry Lather
Actually, Paula did the choreography for Shake Your Love. Which had the least dancing done by Debbie. She actually was upset by that. Debbie just sat in the car during the whole video.
She’s the youngest person to write produce, & perform a billboard hot 100 singles. She was the sole song writer on all of her top 20 songs.
She remains the youngest female to do that after Soulja Boy broke that record by months.
Boy Debbie was a part of my youth. I am only a year older than her, so I really respected her for how talented she was.
I just saw Debbie in concert 2 weeks ago. She rocked it out!! So amazing!
She’s super talented. Youngest female artist ever to write, produce, and perform a Billboard Hot 100 number-one single
Now PLEASE do 10,000 Maniacs for a female Friday. Please!
Oh yeah.. At last you reacted to this song of her. My fave.❤️❤️❤️ Debbie Gibson was a brilliant singer-songwriter (she solely wrote all her hits), and she produces her songs as well.. And this song was one of the few songs that she's also dancing..
If you want more danceable songs of her, try "Out of The Blue, Shake you Love, Only In My Dreams, Staying Together, and We Could Be Together" but if you want soulful ones like Lost In Your Eyes, try "Foolish Beat, and No More Rhyme"..
I love Debbie Gibson..❤
You've gotta check out "Only in my dreams" by Debbie. It'll have you dancing in your seats. Amber will love the solo! That's all I'll say about that :)
Debbie Gibson is extremely talented song writer. She hosts on Sirius XM (forget which channel) and tell short stories of her professional life.
The choreographer is Barry Lather. He did the video for Janet Jackson's "Pleasure Principle" and the George Michael's "Faith" Tour. I checked the book I have about Debbie. Saw Debbie in my hometown for her "Electric Youth" tour back in 1989. The squad should check out "Who Loves You, Baby?", "Should've Been the One", "We Could be Together". Danica Mckellar (Winnie from The Wonder Years) was in the "No More Rhyme" video.
Wow!!! Flashback to my sisters and their bangs dancing to this in the 80’s!!!
You should try her best song (in my opinion) called "Shake Your Love"
👍
She was still so cute with short hair in that video. LOL! I think they'll like the "Out Of The Blue" video. Not my favorite song from her debut album, but the video is neat.
I’m literally sitting here singing that because I always liked it better than this
Thanks for reacting to Debbie Gibson. She's one of my favorite pop Artist of the late 80's. I suggest you react to her "No More Rhyme", and "We could be together" as well.
All of those band members, dancers are still with her today. Still touring and rocking it!
Amber girl - you just made my heart SO happy. This was another one of MY requests. I've been pushing hard for this video because I KNOW that you both would have LOVED it. So thanks for the recognition - and amazing reaction. Debbie was an incredible inspiration - writing all of her own music at 16. We Should be Together (official video) and Over the Wall are my other two favourites. Tase by Lorna Vallings is another artist that I would love to hear tour reaction to. She has an incredible song called taste. Also featured the AMAZING movie called The Skulls. Perfect for your movie channel.
Many people don’t realize that some of her music was driven not only by pop obviously but also freestyle music which was huge at the time. There was a “latin remix” that was played here in Miami radio that had a heavier dance/freestyle beat. LOVED IT!
"Shake Your Love" and "Anything is Possible" are two more upbeat songs, She is 52 now and still tours, records, and releasing videos. I saw her about 3 years ago in concert with Tiffany, New Kids on Block, and Salt N Pepa.
Agree. Shake Your Love is the song that made me instantly like Debbie, which led to me buying her 1st two albums. This one’s is a definite fave.
Debbie Gibson was undoubtably successful. Although she had the typical late 80's pop sound, what stood her apart from others (i.e. Tiffany, Kim Wilde, Martika, Samantha Fox, Robin Sparkles, etc.) is that she wrote, produced, and played instruments (piano) on most of her songs. And all while in her late teens. I don't think she gets enough credit when people usually just identify her with Malls.
Debbie never did perform at malls. I think you're thinking of Tiffany, cos she absolutely did.
I love that you just casually threw in Robin Sparkles lol.
Robin Sparkles, nice 😂
Debbie Gibson’s debut album Out of the Blue came out when I was 10 and that thing was on heavy rotation on my little pink Panasonic radio/tape player for probably a year (along with The Bangles’ Different Light from the year before). I looooooved 😍 that album, an important piece of my youth, and I’m sure my mom was sick of it. 😂 I’d recommend Shake Your Love, Out of the Blue, Foolish Beat, Only in My Dreams, Staying Together, and Red Hot, all great and all were released singles!
@@chelsea747 I've never heard of Robin Sparkles.
@@sallyphillips9175 Cobie Smulders’ character Robin Scherbatsky on How I Met Your Mother, was a Canadian teen pop star named Robin Sparkles, modeled after Tiffany and Debbie Gibson, and then also Alanis Morissette as she had a brief hit in the 90s. It’s all very funny, revealed as her secret past, with clips from music videos, and references to Canadian celebrities etc.
Saw her in concert in the 80’s and she was so fun!! Loved her!
People love to trash her for some reason, but she actually wrote her own songs. Rare for pop stars in the 80s. She's an excellent piano player as well. Try "No More Rhyme".
Exactly, she wrote her own songs and compare to the trash of pop of today she was great.
@@gissellest333 I think Taylor Swift & MIley Cyrus are up there, but you're right. Give me the 80's ladies ANY DAY!!!
She probably gets trashed because she made her way to the Playboy mansion at one point. So did Tiffany.
Yes, and if I remember correctly, she also produced her own albums. She had a studio in her house. And she was only like 16!
@@sallyphillips9175 Making her own music has nothing to do with it. It's probably the decision to pose. Both her and Tiffany. They got introduced to Hugh Hefner somewhere.
A versatile and talented artist. She attacks everything, whether it be interviews, her work or her ventures with such enthusiasm. On top of it she appears sincere and approachable. Oh yeah - she still holds record for being the youngest writer and producer of her own work in an age where the “job aids” available now did not exist.
really happy for another Debbie Gibson reaction..honestly, didn't think there would be another rxn for her...love this song..definitely laid the foundation for many future female pop artists
I still love Debbie! She had so many cool songs.

A few of my close friends saw Debbie Gibson on the recent 80's pop cruise; said she is still terrific live.
Debbie still remains a favorite of mine. She wrote her own material - very much the Taylor Swift of her generation.
This was one of the first songs I heard right after I graduated Marine Basic Training in April 1991. You really should react to "No More Rhymes." It's from the same album and I think it is her best song, at least it's my favorite.
Foolish Beat is amazing! Anything Is Possible is another favorite of mine by Debbie. She was a teen queen in the 80's and matured more as she got older. You have to give her credit/respect - she was a teenager and writing, arranging, producing her own songs. She can play a lot of instruments too.
Can’t help but dance! How fun
Every so often I need to bring this one up on my daily rotation of songs. 🙂
Debbie Gibson was another "teen queen" of the mid 80s like Tiffany. But then she was cast in "Les Miserables". Depth. Much Depth.
Weren't Tiffany's hits all covers? Debbie wrote her songs.
@@sallyphillips9175 And could play an instrument.
@@sallyphillips9175 yes they were which is why I wasn't a fan of Tiffany's. Debbie was and still is the classic triple threat, sing/dance/act but also writing/producing/playing piano.
Amber would love Debbie's version of "In The Still Of The Night" as well as "Foolish Beat." Both feature a certain instrument Amber's very fond of.
I had such a crush on Debbie! Had her single LP "Out of the Blue" hanging on my bedroom wall
When they said, "It's electric" at the beginning of the video the first thing that popped in my mind was Electric Boogie by Marcia Griffiths. It's definitely one of the top dance craze songs of all time. Right up there with The Twist in my opinion.
'Electric Boogie'.....great Jamaican island vibes
Debbie was my first crush. love that our birthdays are only week apart
1.of the best dance floor song ever ❤😊❤ lovit
Lost In Your Eyes. My favorite Debbie Gibson song. Her Liberachi story on Celebrity Ghost Stories is awesome.
We Could Be Together is another fun song by Debbie Gibson and Lost In Your Eyes is a beautiful song.
Her birthday is in a week. She is a great talent. She was up against some heavy hitters in the 80's on the charts and even though she put out great music, her bubble gum, squeaky clean image, and the hurricane force that was Madonna led her to not be as popular as she may have been. I can't even explain to you the pull that Madonna had in the 80's and early 90's.
My fave girl debbie gibson
ONLY IN MY DREAMS is Where it's AT with Debbie Gibson! Def should be your next DG Reaction! :-D
I have had the pleasure of seeing, and meeting, Debbie Gibson live a number of times, most recently last December. You should check out her most recent stuff. Her latest pop album, The Body Remembers, came out in 2021. Very talented artist that is incredibly gracious, and appreciative, of her fans.
Yes this is my favorite Debbie Gibson song you guys rock man
Debbie Gibson is a guilty pleasure of mine
She did a lot of her own choreography.
It's DEBBIE!!! No one knows this, but she's my wife of 36 years now. 😎 I've been a DEBHEAD since I first heard "Only In My Dreams" in 1987. I had her music everywhere in my mid-late teens. This was from her 2nd album. I remember when MTV played this video as a "WORLD PREMIER." My dad was yelling downstairs for me to come up to eat dinner, but I couldn't leave until this video was over... and I saw her LIVE in concert in 1989 in Cleveland, Ohio. She's so talented, and is STILL putting out albums 30+ years after she last hit the top 40. You have to check out songs like:
Only In My Dreams, Shake Your Love, Foolish Beat (her 1st #1 hit), Lost In Your Eyes (her 2nd #1 hit, and biggest of her career), No More Rhyme, Think With Your Heart, Didn't Have The Heart, For Better Or Worse, One Hand One Heart, Another Brick Falls.... Wow, I skipped the whole "Body Mind Soul" album. Then there are her 2000's stuff. "MYOB" is essential...
If you’ve been with for 36 years, shouldn’t you be calling her Deborah? I thought she didn’t like being called Debbie. 😉
@@scottNNJ Nah, she tried "Deborah" and decided to stick with "Debbie." I wonder if I'm the only one who figured out the age difference in days? Back when I was in high school, I figured out she's 449 days older than me. 🤣

She was HUGE back in the day. Pop Princess. 🍬
Finally reacting to this song. I loved this song as a Teen it spoke to me so much I also had the perfume ( yes there was a perfume that was inspired by this song) .

I was there in that video!!....She just played the 80s cruise to Aruba for EY35 electric Youth 35 anniversary... She rocks,,,and is real.
She was like our Britney Spears only she stayed wholesome for as long as she was popular.
No way, Debbie wrote her own songs and can play instruments. I only agree with the wholesome part.
Exactly, Debbie Gibson and Tiffany were essentially the Brittany Spears and Christina Aguilera of Generation-X

Had to click on this the minute I saw it! This brings back huge memories for me. I was in high school when this song came out and we used it for one of the first routines in my high school Dance Class. So I heard this song over and over again, every day for several weeks as we learned the steps. No offense to the choreographer in Debbie's video, but as I recall our dance routine was MUCH harder! I still remember being tested in a row of 6 or 7 students, in front of the whole class. Nerve-wracking!
