Shopping malls were much different in the 1980s. They served as a social gathering place for teenagers (remember, this is pre-internet, pre-social media days)... not just a place for shopping. Malls were a huge deal and packed all the time. It's where you went to hang out with friends, spend time with friends from other schools, etc. Tiffany did a mall tour, playing concerts at various malls (and yes, many malls actually had a stage in the center of the mall). I can't imagine a teenage today saying "Hey, mom/dad, I'm going to go hang out at the mall."
She has a ton of grit and growl in her voice - so, so glad you're digging i to Tiffany's work. Yes indeed, folks did perform in malls back in the 80s - that's where Tiffany built the fan base that took her to the top of the pop charts, touring local malls. Please also react to her songs "Hold an Old Friend's Hand," "All This Time," and "Danny" as well.
Fun fact Tiffany voiced Judy Jetson in the Jetsons Movie. She also sang some of the songs in the movie " Me And You" "Home" , and "I Always Thought I'd See You Again"
Love that you got to Tiffany! Yes they definitely had mall tours in the 80’s…was a free way to get your name out there! She actually has a really good voice. One of my favorites of hers is “All This Time”. A lot of people mentioning Debbie Gibson and I agree you need to check her out, too. Back in the day, fans and press tried to pit the 2 of them against each other (I guess you couldn’t have 2 popular teen female singers at the same time😅) and they tried to make it seem like they were stiff competition and at each other’s throats or something. The ladies maintain that unbeknownst to the press they were admirers of each other and became very good friends. They later toured together. I always loved that about them and made me admire them more😊
If I remember correctly, Tiffany recorded this in 1987, when she was 17 She'll be 51 in October,, which I know because she's 2 months younger than me ❤
Tiffany was my first concert EVER! My sister was a huge fan and I admit to liking the music, so one Saturday, went to Knott’s where Tiffany was performing and got a concert out of it. And yeah, that song was just EVERYWHERE for a while in the 80s.
It's true! Mall performances were absolutely a thing. I worked at a mall in 1999 and (true story, I swear) Destiny's Child did a show. The group/Beyonce blew up the next year and we had no idea we were watching a legend in the making. 🤷🏻♀️
This is a cover from Tommy James and the Shondells and the 80's really opened to the young pop stars. Yep, Her promotional tour started in a malls across America. Many think she was a one hit wonder at age 15 but followed up another hit Hold an Old Friend's hand and later released another album in 2005 Dust off And Dance. Her video brings back all the 80's Teen romance and angst films of the 80's
The first time I heard of Tiffany, and specifically this song, was from Full House. I remember DJ got in trouble for staying up late to watch Tiffany live from Tokyo. The random memories that can be triggered from music is crazy. 🤣
She did a lot of these pop/techno covers of older songs, but when she slows it down and does a ballad, she show what a fantastic voice she has. And,she is only 16.Give "Could have been" a listen. The girl can sing.
I was a punk rocker in the 70s and 80s, and to be honest this was a guilty pleasure song of mine. I totally denied it of course, blasting the Dead Kennedys or Sex Pistols, etc... if anyone said anything. She had a couple of good songs and her voice still hits a good nerve with me. This is one if the songs I listen too to cheer myself up.
Yes, in the 80's new artist would perform in Malls and Clubs. That way they build a fan base before they were signed. We didn't have THE VOICE and AMERICAN IDOL. I think if THE VOICE or AMERICAN IDOL were a thing in the 80's, there would have been an Avalanche of talent but WE didn't. WISHFUL THINKING
Came out in the summer of 1987. The mall concept was used to promote up-an-coming singers/group, since there were record stores located there for attendees to buy their records. The decline of malls and record stores are somewhat connected.
This song was sooo popular in the late 80s. I was in elementary school and this was the first record I had that wasn't "kid"songs. I remember clear as day in 3rd grade music class, we would all sing it! I even think in homeroom class, we would all just break out and sing the chorus to this song. It was catchy and especially kids and pre teens loved this song! It was Tiffany and New Kids on the Block we were obsessed with! And yes, she sang in malls! It was a huge thing to reach younger kids.
Yes many “pop” artists performed in the big malls, esp in SoCal because there was no social media/ UA-cam. It’s was a cheap way to get the young people to buy records on the spot and spread via word of mouth
"Could've Been" should be your next Tiffany song. It really reveals the incredible vocals she had at the young age of 15-16. And yes, in the late 70's and early 80's many new, not-yet famous young artists did "mall tours" across the US to build a fan base and promote their music. Funny to think about now; but it obviously worked!
Checkout some of Tiffany's other songs: "Could've Been", "Radio Romance", "Hold An Old Friend's Hand", "I Saw Him Standing There", "All This Time", "I Will Not Breakdown", "Betty", "Beautiful", "Feels Like A Storm", and "King Of Lies".
The mall thing really was big. Tiffany's management put her on a mall tour -- so she'd be performing for her target demographic -- teens. And the teens could then go to the record store in mall to immediately get the record. Brilliant!
Miley Cyrus has a similar voice to Tiffany....Now you must dive into Debbie Gibson. She is still making albums. Her latest is The Body Remembers and the tour of the same name just wrapped up. Start with Only in my Dreams and do her videos in order. Artist had to grow and change slowly back then which really highlighted the change as opposed to todays acts. Debbie is a prodigy and still holds the book of guiness world records for youngest artist to write, produce & perform a #1 hit Foolish Beat, beating Stevie Wonders record. She plays multiple instruments and even owns Liberacies mirrored piano. Let's see if I can turn you guys into Debheads.
My mom took me to see Tiffany in concert when I was in fourth grade and I remember that I was just over the moon. She and Debbie Gibson (check out her songs, “Only In My Dreams” and “Foolish Beat”) were the queens of bubble gum pop music back in the day. I think Tiffany was 15 when she released this song, and Debbie Gibson wasn’t much older when she came on the scene. Us grade school girls thought they were both just sooooo cool. Edit: And the mall thing was kind of started by Tiffany; I think that’s how she built her fan base. Also, remember that malls were THE place for middle and high schoolers to hang out and be seen back then. Even in high school in the 90s my friends and I used to spend hours walking around the mall doing absolutely freaking nothing (because we had no money) and having a blast doing it.
As has been mentioned, one of many that was originally performed by Tommy James and the Shondells then covered by others, check out Crimson and Clover, you've already reacted to Crystal Blue Persuasion
Another of my fav Tommy James hits (and he does has lots of them) is "Sweet Cherry Wine" - the bell at the beginning peals, and then it climbs to incredible heights from there.
Billy Idol covered their song "Mony Mony". The first Tommy James and the Shondells songs I heard was "Gettin' Together". Really good song, my brother bought the 45.
Tiffany was one of the early pop princesses and she used to perform at shopping malls for her young female fans. This song from 1988 was a cover of the original 1967 version by Tommy James and the Shondells (their first hit).
I remember when this song was released back in 1988. That was the year I left school for college at 16. I saved up my money to buy a compilation album, The Greatest Hits of 1988, featuring songs from the UK charts. This song was on it and was really popular. There was another song on it by Tiffany called Could've Been. Not so many people know that song, but I think it really shows off her vocal talent. 34 years ago, I dismissed it in favour of this upbeat song, I Think We're Alone Now, but as I have got older I have come to appreciate it more.
We used to have a large poster of Tiffany on our wall , I had a huge crush on her growing up ( as did many people) , she's still singing, performing live & recording to this day
Tiffany's mall tour was an idea her management came up with to showcase her music. Most bands establish themselves by playing in bars and night clubs. However, Tiffany was only 16 when her album came out. Most states would allow someone under 18 to perform in a bar, but they had to leave as soon as their show was done. And the way bands established themselves wasn't just by playing, but by doing meet and greets after the show signing autographs, taking pictures, etc. Since she had to leave as soon as she finished playing, she couldn't stick around to meet the fans. Her management realized that most of her fans were going to be teenagers, who in the 80's spent most of their free time at the mall, and the mall tour was started. I'm sure there were other bands who did this as well, but Tiffany is the only one I can remember where MTV showed up to some of her mall shows. This song was the second single released from that first almbum and hit number 1 on the Billboard charts along with her follow up "Could've Been." She became the youngest artist to have two consecutive number 1 singles and the youngest to have a number 1 album. Billboard ranked it as the number 9 album of the year in 1988. As others have mentioned, there was a big rivalry between Tiffany and another teen female act Debbie Gibson. I'd say Debbie probably had the bigger career overall, with more singles that charted than Tiffany, but both had very similar vibes. In the 2000's they both ended up posing for Playboy. They later got together and starred in the SyFy Channel movie "Mega Python vs Gatoroid" (not kidding, that was the title). In the movie they played up their rivalry from a couple decades earlier and had a huge catfight in the movie that was pretty hilarious.
I doubt there wasn’t a young boy(including me) that did not have a crush on Tiffany. She was sort of “The Shopping Mall singer Queen”. That’s not an official title for her but she had a huge shopping mall tour thing going on when she debuted. Debbie Gibson and her were like the two main crushes we all had. Yup Debbie Gibson is next on your list.
She was on the 80s Cruise and was so nice! She sang with Jessie's Girl on the pool deck. I was amazed! She can really rock! She sang Sweet Child O' Mine and was great! I saw her at the midnight buffet and told her I thought she was great and she was so nice. She got in the buffet line a few people behind me! :)
I was on that same cruise and you are right, she was super nice! I saw her at the buffet as well on several occasions, she would always wave and say hello.
I believe Tiffany was discovered while singing in malls, so it sort of became part of who she was. She used to sing covers of songs, this one included. For another teen girl artist from the 80's who was very talented, I'd recommend "In your eyes" by; Debbie Gibson. 😁
@@michaelshelton5488 Which Gibson actually wrote and arranged. Tiffany never wrote or arranged anything, and probably couldn't even play chopstick on a piano.
Yes, Amber & Jordan. Tiffany started doing the Mall Concerts in the 1980's to promote her music. She was also doing concert with New Kids On The Block. She a thing for Jonathan from New Kids On The Block.
J & Amber, her "Could've Been" is next for you! I Think We're Alone Now is a Tommy James & The Shondells cover. You've done 2 Tommy James songs, but not that one.
Thank you for reacting to Tiffany! Still a favorite of mine today! Give these two songs a listen: "Could've Been" and "All This Time" Really highlights her amazing voice!
Tiffany, Debbie Gibson and Kylie Minogue were teen popstars during that time. Kylie MInogues hit was Locomotion which was also a cover previously done by Little Eva in 1962 and Grand Funk Railroad in the early 70s. Since you are a fan of the 60s you may want to listen to Little Evas version.
Yes, she did play at malls, her and Debbie Gibson, NKOTB, and the actors from Beverly Hills 90210 all did mall appearances at that time. I was about 12 or 13, what a time to be alive!!🙌💘
Tiffany was only 16, and yes, mall entertainers were really big in the 80's. One of my favorites by her is Radio Romance. It's a really fun song and video.
1. Now you need to listen to the original. 2. I second, third, fourth, fifth, whatever, the vote for you to react to Debbie Gibson. What an amazingly talented artist, doing SO much not only in front of, but behind the microphone and mixing board, and hitting the charts at such a young age.... yeah, definitely voting for Debbie (or Deborah as she likes to be called now)
Tiffany made a new version of this song a few years back I think it was in 2020. Love that version too. This version takes me back to when I was still a teenager in school. Those were the days. I miss the 80s. Great reaction video.
This is a remake of Tommy James, from the 60s. Tiffany made it her own and 80s-fied it. This was my absolute favorite song being played on the radio, at that time.
For female friday please listen to Susan boyle, the original audition from 2009 is usually the best place to start. Shows how much of an inspiration she is!!
Agree that now you've done Tiffany, Debbie Gibson is next! Starting with her first hit "Only in My Dreams" (it has something for Amber hint hint). I was a teenager in the 80's and it's so refreshing to see you guys enjoying this music.
Well, now you have to do Debbie Gibson. They were vying for top pop princess for years! There is no modern comparison to mall culture of the 80s and 90s. It was everything. Playing malls is how she became famous. P.S. you should watch Mallrats on the movie channel!
This music video was actually filmed in my local mall in Ogden Utah at the Ogden Mall, unfortunately it no longer exists but it was so cool she picked our mall for the video!
Haha, such a high school crush. Same age as me and was doing mall tours the first time I saw her. She still plays smaller venues, caught her at a local casino pre COVID.
I have a feeling this was in the early days of MTV, when it was the best way for pop artists to get out in front of the public by performing in Malls around the country. In fact, I think I may have even seen her myself. I am old so my memory is not totally in tact some days.
Tiffany's management team booked her into malls in the early going and it paid off HUGE in getting her that teeny bopper audience. Malls were the place to hang out for teens in the 80s and so it really was a stroke of genius on their part.
I have so many emotions attached to Tiffany. I was super obsessed as a young girl. Her tape was my prized possession & I kept it under my pillow. My dad raised me as a single father & every morning he would get the tape from under my pillow & blare it SO SO LOUD to wake me up for school. Such a wonderful memory & gosh I miss my dad. He was the best.
My first big crush 😻. Had to have been 12-13 years old. Got my first autograph from her at a Six Flags concert. She did do a huge Mall tour and free concerts to promote the record. This was late 80’s. To this day I still love red heads and it’s probably Tiffany’s fault
I saw her in concert at Jones Beach in the late 80s when I was around 10 or 11. New Kids on the Block were just starting to blow up & they opened for her. Great concert! Also check out Debbie Gibson. I saw her in concert too & she’s another fun artist to see live.
Tiffany and Debbie Gibson were the pop Princesses of the 1980’s Tiffany gave the New Kids on the Block their big break by letting them be her opening act. This is a remake of a Tommy James and the Shondells song.
Loved this, along with the bangles it was all over my musical tastes when I was young. May I suggest another of my favourites of that time with Martika - Toy Soldiers
Tiffany still rocks, today. Got to meet her after her show at City Winery in Boston. Older, wiser, and a hell of a voice, still. And yes, the 'mall tours' and performances... Yes, it was a real thing.
Tiffany did a good job covering this classic from Tommy James and the Shawndale's y'all have covered Crystal Blue Persuasion by them. They were quit popular in the late 60's early 70'. Mony Mony, Dragging a Line, Crimson and Clover, Hanky Panky.
Malls were HUGE in the 80's. Food court. Giant arcades, and hanging out everywhere in little (or big) groups. This made perfect sense. Super cheap exposure loooong before social media. Also, had a major crush on Tiffany! Haha
Love love! My sister and I used to have fights about who was better; Debbie Gibson or Tiffany. Anyways she was the queen of the mall and I believe only 17 when she released this song. Her whole debut album is awesome.Debbie Gibson was my first concert, Tiffany was my second. ✌️
As a proud child of the 80's those mall performances were amazing! I freaking LOVE Tiffany SO much, this is definitely a rabbit hole you both must go down. Want more songs? I can't imagine a teenage today saying "Hey, mom/dad, I'm going to go hang out at the mall."
I was a huge fan of this song in my childhood. Now 30 or so years later and I still love it. Love this cover by Tiffany.
"I Always Thought I'd See You Again" is also a legit good pop song too.
I love the songs in The Jetsons Movie by Tiffany! I wish they were available on like Apple Music and whatnot
I always loved that about them and made me admire them more😊
Tiffany was part of the teen pop wave of the late 80s. Debbie Gibson and New kids on the block were also part of that
If I remember correctly, Tiffany recorded this in 1987, when she was 17
She'll be 51 in October,, which I know because she's 2 months younger than me ❤
she was 15 when she had a hit with this
@rayjenkins3867 you may be right. She'd likely recorded this a couple of years earlier than it's release
Tiffany gave New Kids on the Block their big break opening for her on her tour.
By the time, I saw them, NKOTB was so huge that they switched the headliner and she opened for them.
Have they reacted to any NKOTB? They should!
I'll forgive her for that mistake.
@@RoGueNavy Haha. I'm with you.
@@hena1937 yes. Step By Step
I was 6 when this song came out by Tiffany... I got the record.. and played it over and over!! Takes me back to my childhood for sure!! :)
I was going through their album and this song came on and I was like..wait a minute..I know this from somewhere lol
She had a lot of hits on the first album
Could've Been is my fave Tiffany song.
4 Top 10 songs (Two #1)
She also covered The Beatles “I saw her/him Standing There” - it was released just after this song.
The first time I heard of Tiffany, and specifically this song, was from Full House. I remember DJ got in trouble for staying up late to watch Tiffany live from Tokyo. The random memories that can be triggered from music is crazy. 🤣
Same lol
She did a lot of these pop/techno covers of older songs, but when she slows it down and does a ballad, she show what a fantastic voice she has. And,she is only 16.Give "Could have been" a listen. The girl can sing.
Techno?, behave yourself !
Yes, mall concerts were extremely popular back in the 80's.
Malls were the TikTok of the time.
Malls are dieing
@@special420player Unfortunately
I remember seeing Leif Garrett in the mall...actually the Ann & Hope plaza. Lol
@@SimranSilva yea it is but I think most brick an mortar stores will go away as well most people use the internet as a mall in there hands anymore
And yes, mall performances were huge for young, new stars in the 80’s. It was a great time to be young ❤
Everyone back in the day LOVED Tiffany!!! This song was playing on the Airwaves Everywhere!!!! It was a song of rebellion!!!!
Let's see if I can turn you guys into Debheads.
interesting
Don't be encouraging them to do Debbie Gibson, I'm begging you.
@@pumpwellington6631 and especially expecting Debra to carry this channel with her 'catalogue'.... 🤣
Tiffany and Debbie Gibson love them both
This is a Tommy James song but not bad!
@@thomasjustice1716 Awesome! Did you see her on the other cruise too? We've been on all 6 of the 80s Cruises. :)
I believe Tiffany was discovered while singing in malls, so it sort of became part of who she was. She used to sing covers of songs, this one included.
For another teen girl artist from the 80's who was very talented, I'd recommend "In your eyes" by; Debbie Gibson. 😁
Slight correction- the Debbie Gibson song was Lost in Your Eyes. 😎
And of course Kylie is still smashing it and selling out stadiums wherever she goes.
@@jedislap8726 Easily the hottest out of the three.
Heh I remember the height of the "Tiffany Vs. Debbie" wars of the 80's.
Debbie Gibson- "Only in My Dreams" is ICONIC
Yes, she did play at malls, her and Debbie Gibson, NKOTB, and the actors from Beverly Hills 90210 all did mall appearances at that time. I was about 12 or 13, what a time to be alive!!🙌💘
Tiffany was only 16, and yes, mall entertainers were really big in the 80's. One of my favorites by her is Radio Romance. It's a really fun song and video.
1. Now you need to listen to the original. 2. I second, third, fourth, fifth, whatever, the vote for you to react to Debbie Gibson. What an amazingly talented artist, doing SO much not only in front of, but behind the microphone and mixing board, and hitting the charts at such a young age.... yeah, definitely voting for Debbie (or Deborah as she likes to be called now)
Tiffany was a HUGE mall sensation back when I was a teenager. My friends and I loved listening to her album.
This song is so beautiful they called her the mall queen
Tiffany made a new version of this song a few years back I think it was in 2020. Love that version too. This version takes me back to when I was still a teenager in school. Those were the days. I miss the 80s. Great reaction video.
This is a remake of Tommy James, from the 60s. Tiffany made it her own and 80s-fied it. This was my absolute favorite song being played on the radio, at that time.
This song just popped in my head today! Was gonna look for it! So thanks for posting this today! Still 1 of my favorite songs!
She toured with new kids on the block. She was great. Debbie Gibson is a must. The mall thing was a start for her. It worked great.
"I Think We're Alone Now" was also covered by the British all-group band Girls Aloud.
Well, now you have to do Debbie Gibson. They were vying for top pop princess for years!
There is no modern comparison to mall culture of the 80s and 90s. It was everything. Playing malls is how she became famous.
P.S. you should watch Mallrats on the movie channel!
Kevin Smith!!! Definitely agree with a Mallrats reaction. My fave Kevin Smith movie, though, is Dogma. 😊
This music video was actually filmed in my local mall in Ogden Utah at the Ogden Mall, unfortunately it no longer exists but it was so cool she picked our mall for the video!
Nobody does it better then the original group, Tommy James and The Shondells.
And my favorite from them is "Mirage".
Debbie Gibson, "Lost In Your Eyes", is what you should start with for her.😀
I have so many emotions attached to Tiffany.
Interesting... I've heard this song hundreds of times... I always thought it said "I think we're ALONE now"... ... wow!!!
I saw her in concert at Jones Beach in the late 80s when I was around 10 or 11. New Kids on the Block were just starting to blow up & they opened for her. Great concert! Also check out Debbie Gibson. I saw her in concert too & she’s another fun artist to see live.
This song was a massive hit! More like phenomenon actually. There aren't any songs that are universally huge like this anymore really.
Tiffany and Debbie Gibson were the pop Princesses of the 1980’s Tiffany gave the New Kids on the Block their big break by letting them be her opening act. This is a remake of a Tommy James and the Shondells song.
This is one of my favorites from the 80's. I still listen to it from time to time.
Loved this, along with the bangles it was all over my musical tastes when I was young. May I suggest another of my favourites of that time with Martika - Toy Soldiers
The motion for Martika is hereby seconded!!! Toy Soldiers!!!
i'm pretty sure they reacted to that already but I can't find it on their channel?!? maybe they had to remove it .... or I am going insane lol
Tiffany still rocks, today. Got to meet her after her show at City Winery in Boston. Older, wiser, and a hell of a voice, still. And yes, the 'mall tours' and performances... Yes, it was a real thing.
Tiffany was famous for singing at malls before she was signed to a label.
Tiffany was just 15 years old when this song was released in the summer of 87. I was a teenager too and thought she was perfect!
For those of us who were in school in the 80's, this was an updated version of an old song.... not bad for a copy.
As a proud child of the 80's those mall performances were amazing! I freaking LOVE Tiffany SO much, this is definitely a rabbit hole you both must go down. Want more songs? I got tons of faves lol they include Radio Romance, Feelings of Forever, Kid on a Corner, I Saw Him Standing There, Could've Been, All This Time. More Tiffany for Female Friday please!
Sweet memories. I was one of many teen boys who had a major crush on Tiffany. Note: the song is a cover of Tommy James and the Shondells. I believe Tiffany's version is the best known.
NKOTB, Tiffany, Tommy Page (RIP), Debbie Gibson...my late childhood and earliest teen years in a nutshell.(NKOTB is still fantastic...seeing them later this summer.)
For Debbie, try Only In My Dreams or Electric Youth
