I tried to keep a small school of neon tetras once. They all died , but in that bag was a lone stow away baby guppy. It grew up , and he enjoyed whenever I walked past the tank. He got excited when I did jazz hands in front of the tank.

This is how my Fantail Goldfish was up until she died. I would always show her the food through the glass and slowly bring it up while she would it then drop it in the water when she got to the top. She eventually would just follow my finger all the time, even if she had just been fed.

My cherry shrimp aren't the brightest, but they seem to recognize that when I come to their tank in the morning they can go to the feeding spot to find some new food. They also stopped being scared of me after I spent about 20 whole minutes letting them climb all over my hand.

The fish I was closest to was my betta, Cat. He lived in his little tank above my bed, and would get very excited to see me whenever I was around. It was more than just "you are my source of food", he was just happy to be in my presence. He was there to send me off to bed, and would come say hi when I woke up in the morning. I decided he deserved a bigger, more beautiful tank but sadly he passed after moving into his new bigger home. That one really hurt, he was a real companion pet. RIP Cat the betta fish.

I've always bonded with my Bettas and currently my pea puffer! But I think the closest bond I had was with a betta naked Phantom.
He was a rescue from a Petco (back when I worked for one) that was lifeless and no fins, after I nursed him back to health he turned out to be jet black with blood red double tail fins! He was always a gentle soul, not the best swimmer, and very into dancing whenever I drew on his tank. Towards the end of his life even when he couldn't swim anymore (had to move him to a shallow breeder box so he could get to the surface) he would still muster up an excited wiggle when I came by to check on him
rip Phantom, you were a good boy

My uncle rescued a betta fish from his sister in law, it was literally in a container for 3 years without any maintenance, including food. It didn't get fed for three whole years, from what I heard. Absolutely horrifying and depressing that he could survive three years without being fed. It was just crazy and I couldn't beleive it.
Edit: not to mention he was swimming in what was quite literally his own toilet for that long. It passed away a while ago, but his last year was happy.

aw man 😥 many centuries ago my younger brothers had a betta fish who they named Beto (like a bad pun), but of course they didn't care for it (nor I knew back then the way my mom was caring for it wasn't ok so we're all going to fish hell). Anyway, I was doing bad at school and my solution, for some reason, was to use Beto as my apprentice to teach him the things I was gonna have tests about. so everyday I'd sit near his little bowl and talk to him while doing homework. Little homie was pissed the whole time lol, flaring his cute cheek fins at me. This time with him actually helped me understand things and my grades improved.
one day I arrived early from school ready to share some human wisdom to my fishboi victim, and I saw him on the bottom of the bowl, was white as a ghost (he was dark reddish purple). he survived three years of bad care and a hairless monkey weirdo talking to him 😥 I owe him my school degree lol
looking back I guess those were the few moments he had some kind of bonding times with someone, that and my mom's feeding him I guess 😔
years later the memories of Beto's grumpy face made me curious to read about bettas and then I realized the terrible life he lived and it's the reason I became interested in aquariums and I really hope I can give bettas a decent life in the future... I've read they can live 7 years if cared properly... it'd be cool to get a grumpy 'Betto the 2nd" to live that long.

I got really close to my brothers first beta fish (really my fish). His name was peacock and he was some sort of mustard tail I think- anyways he would come up and interact with me by either watching me or following my tweezers when I trimmed his plants, eat off my finger and jump out if the water for food. He would stare at my bearded dragon for hours on end. If anyone but me or my bearded dragon or leopard gecko approached the tank he would act aggressive by flaring his fins and gills and would try and attack them through the glass. He started to make bubble nests in the corners and would sleep on a specific leaf every night. I miss him every day

This makes me miss both of my tanks but most especially my 300gal bow front salt reef tank that took me 4yrs to build-up/grow. The part I missed the most about it was my 6 clown fish and 3 cleaner shrimp. I come home from work and they'd instantly come up to the top front of the tank where I'd greet them. I'd then go strait into the kitchen and wash my hands and arms really good twice (I'm a mechanic) so that I wouldn't get them sick or anything. Then I'd prep their food and I'd go hang with them. When I'd open the canopy the clown fish were at the surface blowing bubbles and if I put my hand/arm in they rub against me and wouldn't freak out if I brought them up out of the water a little bit. They were honestly sweet! Then the cleaner shrimp (they were red with a white cross on their back/tail and a slight white/pink stripe on the lower sides.) would cruise from anywhere in the tank and hop on my arm or hand and started cleaning or something. But they too weren't afraid of anything and I could bring them up and out of the water. I also had a 100gal bio-ball tank that I made for filtration. It had 8 little shrimp and some cleaner fish that liked the dark. I did have a dim blueish light in there that would only come on for 6hrs a day. Up in the tank I had some other fish aswell like an eel, a stingray that was about 4in across and a few others I can't really remember the names of. I wanted a shark but I learned that it would probably eat the shrimp and possibly the clown fish I noped out on that. There was crab too! I was getting my live rock and corral from a guy that never ever failed to have surprises in them after some time went by. That's how I ended up with crabs and some other creatures and small sea life like some sort of clam/razors. Etc. It was pretty damn cool and with the setup I built, it was very low maintenance. Basically just water adding and every 4 months I would do a partial water change that I had all ready and set acclimated live salt water that I had in 2 50 gallon rubber maid garbage cans that were lined and rinsed well before I filled them. I would have them going the whole time and I had live rock and a couple fish in them that didn't like light so that all balances were good to go with heater, pumps for oxygen & circulation. I used a pump/ hose system that I designed that also served as a vacuum where I'd go along with it into the sand/gravel to clean it and just incase, I made a failsafe that the chance a fish or something would get sucked up, it would end up in a old 20 gal acrylic tank that would act as a sluice box holding tank that had a screen then a filter in it then the water from that went to my kitchen sink. If anyone has heard of a cobra fish tank vacuum system, it's where I got a part of my idea/design for the vacuum part but everything else was of my design. Back then it was soo expensive! Especially the lighting! I cannot imagine what it's like today. I was doing fish tanks from 89-03. I started into it myself at 13yo but my parents had a 40gal tank when I was growing up with tetras, painted tetras, Bala sharks, Bala cats, kuli loaches, angel fish.

He's super chill with his tank mates and loves to play and interact with me, which is something uncommon in his species. When i feed him i always hear the noise he makes when he bites the food, which is something like a tick tick. He always gets super excited when i get near the aquarium and sometimes i like to put my hand in the water and watch him bite it and swim around like if it is some kind of toy. Damn i love my chunky boi

My arrowana has gotten use to me hand feeding. They are already use to skimming the top of the tank and jumping. Turning on the lights at the same time in the morning before work and feeding got them use to the routine. It’s amazing because it can actually pet my fish now without it being frightened.

I was a honestly not the best fish owner I begged my parents for a pet because I wanted to be responsible. My mom finally caved and bought us a male betta who we named blueberry he was a pretty blue and purple and had long beautiful fins. I always remembered to feed him before school after school and my dad fed him while I was at school. But my dad would help me to clean his tanks and change his water. We had a few plants and he loved to swim in them and hide. He would always swim up to the surface when I was near because he knew it meant feeding. Sadly I lost him after moving in with my mother. I had younger siblings so he had to stay with my father. R.I.P. Blueberry I miss you everyday.

My blood parrot chichlid is skiddish when I do her. Vacuuming. She hides. I see this person is actually grabbing his Chiclid and it doesn’t advt too scared. I will have to try that. I have had several bettas that are very friendly. They live when I’m doing water changes. They rub up against my hand and are very intelligent and affectionate. One of my sweet boys would actually get in the palm of my hand and rest his little body. He’d lay down in the palm of my hand. We had a very close relationship. I loved him so much. My daughter called him a mamas boy. His name was Rainbow.🌈 as he was the colors of the rainbow. Beautiful ! Yes, he passed away and I cried like a baby. What hurt the most was he was suffering for way too long. I tried everything to save him. I treated him for everything because I didn’t know what the cause of his illness was. And what was SO HEARTBREAKING was he’d swim to me for help. He come and rest in my hand. It completely broke my heart ! I was told not to let fish run against me or rest in my hand because they have a natural coat of slime that protects them from diseases. Maybe I literally loved him to death 😢. I don’t know but bettas are so affectionate and smart !! 🩷

I had Golden Loach for a few years, I spoiled him, got him a bigger tank and everything. (yes I loved up the differences in sex on his gill and fin placement, pretty cool) he'd swim back and forth and then wiggle down or up. Then sleep looking deaf just to scare me... A few times his little whiskers and mouth would nibble on my fingers they are known to be pretty curious and friendy to keepers.

Red Parrot Cichlid. I bet a lot of people were inspired to get one after seeing that one dude handle his parrot cichlid just like you did. I have two a male named Buck Rogers and the female named Bonnie. I'm aware they can't breed because hybrid and infertility in the male but they love each other's company. Buck and Bonnie will hand feed and will swim through my fingers pretty feel good stuff.

      I agree!
I have 10 Red Parrots and they definitely have ' buddies' that they pair off and prefer to hang with regardless of their sex! They all have personality plus! The youngest little girl, Coral, has always been super inquisitive, trusting and friendly! At night, I always have a candle lit on a table not far from their tank. Little Coral will hover and stare at the flickering flame for hours like it's some magical beacon! I always wonder what she's thinking! She follows my King Kong Parrot around even though he's 6x her size! He used to nip at her, push her away and flat out ignore her. She was SO persistent and infatuated by this big, red fish, that she never gave up! Little by little, he came to accept her and only she is allowed to sleep in his log at night! They each have separate, distinct personalities and I LOVE paying attention to them! ❤️
