@@lemmylicket2306 In Lars' defense, he might not be the greatest drummer, but he does his thing and he's a drummer in a commercially successful band, thanks in part to his business sense. It also gives us non-virtuosos hope.

One thing is missing though… the extra half a dozen toms needed to do the ascending/ defending tom fills Portnoy so loved doing. And another 50 drums/ cymbals of varying types just for kicks 😆

I’d take this version over the one with Lars’ drumming any day. I like some Metallica a lot (first four records?) but the drumming is nothing to write home about. Not great, not terrible but simply not on par with the guitars and singing…

there lies a corner where the double-bass pedals of Lars lay crying in the realization they'll never experience such rhythms.
I really don't understand why so many dislikes everytime. Some songs are harder than others to play in the style of others drummers, and this guy is a realy good drummer i don't know why there is some dislikes like that...
This demonstrates perfectly why it's important to know when it's appropriate to play basics. Not a fan of Lars but Sandman doesn't need more than the powerful 4/4 rock beat that's there.
I love how Lars on a dream theater song sounds terrible but portnoy on enter sandman actually sounds incredible.

When Mike Portnoy plays cover songs he know when to put drum fills on the song and he does not Overplay.
I am playing a run of west side story, and thanks to this video I just sit there and think how MP would play each tune.
Even the simpler beats sounded way tighter. Mike isn’t just good because of his technical skill: he’s good because he’s tight.

This is great...really interesting and I wish there were more of these kinds of videos. For example, I'd love to see how Neil Peart would have played various Beatles songs. Strangely enough, this video really shows how great Lars is, in spite of himself. Dream Theater has always been a bunch of fantastic musicians who can't write a truly classic song. Metallica, on the other hand, has dozens of classic songs. Musicianship should never be confused with great art. Lars is a master arranger and knows how to highlight the SONG, not the drumming.
