Lovely bowl William. I can attest to the fact that elm is as hard as rock. I took a standing dead elm down last year which was sound and three that had fallen but full of worm so were firewood. The wood was as dry as a bone and rock hard but i got some great bowls and platters from it. My gouge was half an inch shorter though !

Thanks very much, and definitely hard wood, but the end result is always worth it. The grain in Elm is stunning, and if you have some burl it's amazing,

It's a 5/8 inch bowl gouge with a 50 degree bevel, not a roughing gouge,hope this helps you out,
