Hello Chad, I also had not luck with these kind of traps for a long time. But then in 2018 I went to Africa, and a 60 yo native lady taught me how to make a better trap and how to set it up. So in that part of Africa they make the entry hole asymmetrical. So the hole is not in the middle of the cone but off to one side. The fish trap needs to be setup so that the hole is directly over the ground. So that the fish can swim more easily into the hole, because they like swimming near the ground. Next she told me that the opening needs to face downstream. Then she said to me that the sides need to be blocked off, so that the fish are forced to swim into the trap. Also the trap should be shaded with leafy materials so it looks like a dark hole. Bait is also important. Maybe this helps :) Love your videos.

I was also thinking that pointing the trap downstream would be best since fish seem to prefer to swim into the current or side to side.

I would recommend for those in more northern or colder climates, and especially on any day with no direct sunshine, to *first carefully plan, situate, and create a modest fire alongside the stream where you intend to bathe, something that won't get out of control, but which can radiate enough heat to warm you back up quickly once you're out of the water.

Well your more prepared for the fishing season coming up. Winter time can be a rough season depending on wear your living. I am a meat eating guy, and don't feel like I had a good meal unless there's meat in it. If I was out there wear you are I'd be looking in to trapping small game, and hunting with a bow. Make a whole bunch of jerky! I think the fish trap will work for sure. Might have to wrap more cordage around it. Those fish can slip through some tight spaces. Look forward to next video!

I don't know if it's possible or even right for that region but,
would perhaps a work sled or wheel barrel be an option for
the ability to carry and do more but easier? Also, It would be
interesting to see a backpack made of your Yucca fibers woven
on a primitive loom. I love the idea of primitive crafts with things
    like that.
Looming and weaving and baskets and pottery and clothing
from natural fibers and paints and book making all from materials.
Can you imagine Chad doing a journal in a book he made on paper
he created and using ink and quill he did? How cool is that? Narrating
his video like he does but as he writes in the journal he made?
And if a book is not primitive enough he could do a scroll or clay tablets.
Just trying to be helpful I guess. Ideas for those long nights waiting
to fall asleep or on the mountain top where reception is possible.

I'd have dug a deeper channel, submerged the trap, and used woven willow fence to guide fish rather than the stone dam, maybe add some worms, locusts or shrimp in a net bag tied inside. But I think a sun-warmed pool might be more successful in winter. Great video!

Cold winter streams are the hardest to locate fish. They will hide anywhere they can such as undercut banks, logs, leaves and even rocks. The one species of fish your showed from the warmer months look like green sunfish. They are the ones with the dark spot on the gill plate. They can be very friendly and will even peck at your feet if you stand still in the water near them. I'm sure others have mentioned building a weir to guide the fish to the trap. That would help but I don't know how much you want to leave the streambed alone. Don't forget to look under the rocks if you decide to do so. If there's dragonflies present in the summer around the stream, you will find the dragonfly nymphs on the underside of rocks. Good luck and you'll be catching fish soon.

My grandmother taught me to fish. You need to face the trap downstream. And place it in a smaller part of the stream, if you can. You want to damn the stream, with rocks and big branches. So that all the water flows through the trap. We always made a smaller trap inside of the larger one, so the fish couldn't get back out. You also want to put leaves and sticks to cover it, and the food for fish Is very important. I was always taught to set them up at first light and then check it out when father Sun is 3 fingers from mother earth. Or set it up when father Sun is 3 fingers from mother earth and get it when father Sun is directly overhead. The second option is for when the time of year is not best. You can also use leaves that make the fish come out, but I don't think you know what kind to use . Anyway, I hope you do better. An empty stomach at night is not fun. I hope this helps.

another option is the 3-5 pronged fishing gig spear, the prongs can be fashioned from bone or wood and are quite effective once a little practice is done (to adjust for water parallax). Attach a long line to make retrieval easy and I have even seen native peoples use an atlatl or as it is known here in Australia the woomera (aboriginal spear thrower) to improve range and power.
The spear is the primitive people's best friend and most useful ranged weapon and tool and would have been used for a lot longer than the bow as it is easier to build, effective and lethal. It can also serve as a defence tool against predators and as a hunting weapon and not be thrown.

    PREGUNTA / QUESTION:
Why do you rarely eat cactus fruits in your videos?
I see a lot of Palo Verde and Mesquite maybe even Ironwood if I remember (which are all nutrient dense and important for previous native peoples)
But there are few times where we can see you eating Prickly Pear, Barrel Cactus fruit, Saguaro fruit, Cholla, Christmas cactus in large quantities.
    You seldomly store them either.
I think it would be very cool to see you make fruit leather or dry out cactus fruit pulp like the natives.
Or to reduce it into a sugar jam or jelly. Another thing one can do, is crush the prickly pear into water, sift off all the solids and let dry in the sun.
You'll be left with an extremely sweet honey with about equal consistency.
The same is possible with mesquite.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures

There are no cactus fruits in the winter. Prickly pears produce fruit in late summer. There is no saguaro in these mountains either. I didn’t try drying prickly pears last year because I didn’t have the clay pots for storage. This year I will be more prepared.

It's going to get hot again before you know it, and you'll need to stay hydrated and safe from the heat. While the weather is still permissible, and certain bigger projects are on standby, it may be worth your time to build a large water reservoir with a built-in filtration system close by. That way you'll always have clean water to drink on hand or before venturing out, and you could always replenish it with 1 or 2 large pots at the end of the day.

Another way you could try to catch them is fishing by hand.
What I mean is you go in deeper water on the edges of the river and fell under the rocks gently like you are trying to tickle the underside of the rock. The fish should stay calm as long as you move slowly and gently. After you feel a fish just position your hands one around the gills and the other near the tail and press it on the rock until you have a good grip on it.
I don't know if you will have success in the winter with this technique but it's worth a shot.

I wish they would the Mohicans series into movies. Most people don't know there is more then one book. Anyways Chad would be perfect to play Hawkeye.

I never read those books. Who was Hawkeye?

    • @FrozenHawkHunter
      @FrozenHawkHunter 2 роки тому

@@ChadZuberAdventures He was also called a La Longue Carabine, or The Long Rifle. He was kind of a side character in ask the Mohicans. The book takes place during the French and Indian wars. I think there are 4 books that cover Most of Hawkeyes life. Not a bad read by fire light. Or in the shade of a tree by a stream. It's a mix of historic events and made up ones that could have happened.

I have used baskets exactly like this in wilderness survival trips I have taken. I've found they work best for me at least in deeper water. But I was targeting catfish specifically. I hope this works for you. It's hard to survive without protein like meat.

hey chad you didn't fail, I also clearly doubt there will be fish trapped, you have to put a bait first in the trap so that the fish are attracted to the trap, you also have to know what type of fish is dominant in the river so you know the right bait for the fish, and also you have to leave the trap overnight or more

    • @fahijaeger7035
      @fahijaeger7035 2 роки тому

or indeed other factors like you said, there are times when rivers have fish populations that are very difficult to see, I hope you understand my opinion

鱼means fish,渔with氵,means tool for fishing😜
