Try soaking the willow switches for 24 to 36 hours. The ones you split in half to hold the straight ones together. Its said to "take the spite out". Also i winced at the rope you used to hold the lid on, that represets a huge time investment. You can use 4 or 5 "chop sticks" narrow to fatter straight sticks which pierce from the outer basket through the layers to the otherside. Coming from different angles they lock eachother and the lid together.
I'd agree with this. The pinning sticks can be less than perfectly straight, too, ideally with a few knots or knobs to help lock them in place if they're not a super-tight fit. Fast to get on, fast to get off. I'd think 3 would do okay, if they fit well, since the fish aren't going to be able to push the funnel out of the basket mouth, and if you pin them like a triangle, that leaves a good-sized hole in the middle for the fish to slip through on their way to the throat of the funnel in the top.
That's a very good tip for securing the funnel to the main basket. I still did want a rope for carrying the basket and lifting it out of the water although not essential the rope does help to more evenly distribute the weight of the basket when it is lifted out of the water.
Thank you for teaching us how to do the fishing basket you took your time showing us may God continue to bless you with all His blessings thank you for always bringing us along with you on your journey

If i think that i go in a store and i can buy the rope...your is an enormus work, and make me understand how hard it's your work...very very nice video Chad, thank you so much.
You have to season the trap by putting rocks in it to keep it submerged under water for at least 3 days or it will float. And you will need some kind of bait like liver or something stinky for the cat fish. Worms packed into a mud ball will catch some game fish. normally a bait bag is used tied into the back area of the trap. You can make a small mesh bag out of the cordage you make. Like quarter inch holes or smaller for the mesh so the bait stays put. And fish swim up stream, so they face the direction of the current helps the breath better. The trap opening needs to face down stream for maximum usage. Fish will travel upstream following the scent of the bait. The current will keep them in the trap till you are ready to retrieve them. It's a great design. Hope you can make it work for you on the show. I had Really good luck with the ones I made. I always had a meal thanks to the fish trap.

Hi Chad, my neighbours grow and work with willow. They have taught me that you can soften the willow shoots by drying them completely and soaking them in water. I hope this helps.
Yes, soaking in hot water really works well. At the stream I could soak them in cold water but here I don't have a large tub to soak them in. Sometimes you just have to do your best with what you got.
@@ChadZuberAdventures I am half way into the video and I am already impressed by the amount of effort and time you put in. I hope fiddling with sticks and string is your kind of thing because not everyone can do that for an extended time! I am also amazed by the high quality of your string. It's all quite impressive.
Congrats Chad, now you can eat river fish, crayfish or something, we know sometimes the body needs other nutrients besides fruit, land animal meat or other wild food, I haven't seen your catch maybe in the next video, but I'm sure it will work..., it already looks like "BUBU" (fish trap from Indonesia ). Actually, I think those willows would make for a good roofing material. Create a basket that serves as a base and then use the bark. I still think that the current roof needs something to keep it in place. Again, a basket type framework would work, even just rings to keep the bark in place. I'm concerned about the wind. Good luck fishing! I've seen others successfully use this type of basket for fishing.👍🏻😊
Yeah, if the willows are close enough together then they could be useful in making the roof. The wind hasn't been a problem so far. Once in a while a piece of bark gets moved but I just add more.
What a wonderful way of life compared to many who are cooped up in an apartment block somewhere in New York or Los Angeles with not much to do but look at the walls and play on gadgets!

Così riesci a piegarli facilmente. Appena spezzati ogni vimine per dividere usa un bastone, non le dita. Buon lavoro! Ammiro la tua tenacia!
Chad your fish trap is impressive. From what I understand all you need is a cage and a cone. I think you could have gotten away with making a drum shape and then for the end made a lid for easy extraction. Might have made the volume a bit bigger. It should work very well. With the willow branches can you hammer them much like you do with the yucca? If so, will this make them more pliable? As all you are doing is braking the fibers up? Kinda like when you went to bend the ends at the start? I am wondering if there are a few stages and those willow branches would hold together still. For example a solid one like you used to make it a circle. Then a slightly beat one to weave each branch. Then a more beat one to help tie it off? Either way its very impressive! I enjoyed it a lot.
I the basket in this shape because it is more simple and faster to make. A flat bottom crossed my mind but would have taken much more time. The stiff stems of mule fat (seep willow) don't bend as well as desert willow. There are ways to make the desert willow stems more pliable for weaving. My favorite way is heat or hot water but that would take a long time because there are so many bends that need to be made. I have to first determine how effective this trap is. In the future I will make more traps and perhaps find other ways to make them.
Are you using the trap the right way around? I think that the smell of the bait will travel downstream, and the fish would swim upstream, so if the entrance to the trap was downstream, then fish would follow the smell Ito the trap. I’ve never trapped fish, but it seems to make sense?
Love your videos Chad! You look to have put on some weight (in a good way, some were worried about you!) did you end up having a slight break, or have you found more substantial food?
I've been forcing myself to eat more. I decided to slow down a bit and prioritize my eating. Now that the hut is good enough to live in and I have good heat inside I feel a lot better.
Have you considered making a fish net? Not the kind you throw, but the kind with a handle, so you could scoop the fish out of the water. Unless it's recently rained, the water seems to be clear enough to easily see the fish to scoop them up I can't wait to see how effective the trap is though, hopefully it will make making a net moot.
Yes, I once made a small one but I would need a bigger one. The fish are fast and react quickly at the first sign of threat so it's not as easy as just dipping a net and scooping them up. I will have to be more clever than that.
Your handmade cordage looks so great! You could buy store bought jute twine and I'd never be able to tell the difference. I'm trying to hone my cordage making skills but I've got a long way to go. Great video as usual by the way!
Hahaha, I am always making rope and cordage. It's never ending. It would be funny to try and have a pizza delivered here but they wouldn't even try because this place is soooo far from the nearest city.

I've been forcing myself to eat more. I decided to slow down a bit and prioritize my eating. Now that the hut is good enough to live in and I have good heat inside I feel a lot better.
@@ChadZuberAdventures That’s great to hear 👌 Glad you feel better. I look forward to seeing how the fish trap works 😃
@@ChadZuberAdventures That's great! Hope this series go to right direction. And you always be my favorite UA-camr
0:35 COOL TORCH!
I hope you catch a lot of tasty fish
Me too!!
Nice job. This is going to change your life.
I hope so!
After you caught some fishes, you can also use fish bones to make different tools like needles, hooks for fishing etc ...
Maybe. These fish are kinda small so I don't know if the bones will be strong enough to use as tools.
Love the progress that your making with the shelter. I'm jealous
Thanks! It will get even better.
That basket weave would also make a good wall skeleton for waddle and daub.
Can't wait to see the fish trap in action. Great video. Cheers
Amazing! I love the fish trap!
Great job
Have you considered making a fish net? Not the kind you throw, but the kind with a handle, so you could scoop the fish out of the water. Unless it's recently rained, the water seems to be clear enough to easily see the fish to scoop them up
I can't wait to see how effective the trap is though, hopefully it will make making a net moot.
Yes, I once made a small one but I would need a bigger one. The fish are fast and react quickly at the first sign of threat so it's not as easy as just dipping a net and scooping them up. I will have to be more clever than that.
Que bien quedó la trampa, espero que puedas atrapar buenos peces con ella, ahora esperaremos el siguiente episodio. Saludos
Eso espero
Your handmade cordage looks so great! You could buy store bought jute twine and I'd never be able to tell the difference. I'm trying to hone my cordage making skills but I've got a long way to go. Great video as usual by the way!
Jute twine actually looks very different from yucca. This yucca cordage I make is higher quality than what you can buy because this is handmade.
The fish trap looks great! I look forward to seeing it in action. Keep the amazing videos coming!
spending so much time making rope and using it all in a short time must be daunting...
pizza delivery guys come to your hut? ^^
Hahaha, I am always making rope and cordage. It's never ending. It would be funny to try and have a pizza delivered here but they wouldn't even try because this place is soooo far from the nearest city.
we love you keep doing the servival series
Thank you!
