how did i make it: dma copy an i8 texture. im a lazy dumb programmer so theres no cool compression or anything. it still fits on an n64 cart because it really isn't that much data.

I think there's a video somewhere of this exact minigame modded into a touhou game. It's not possible to beat though as you can't jump in touhou.
We need a TAS of this that gets a score of 0 with the least A presses possible.
But higher score is better
@@cube4923 The point is that even though getting a low score is not the original goal, it's equally difficult and so it's just as much of an accomplishment. (e.g. antichess, where the goal is to try to lose first, which is more difficult than it sounds)

I think a better way to design this would be to give you points for standing on white pixels instead of taking away points when you land on black pixels, making it work like that means the player is punished for constantly jumping and stalling in the air and is more encouraged to stay on the ground and only do low jumps when necessary

I was actually thinking about doing that, because air stalling is a big problem in this minigame.

Have you checked how it looks with point filtering? Might look better, especially since you're supposed to "dodge the black pixels" so it would be better if there was absolutely no question as to what is a white pixel and what is a black pixel. In any case I fucking love this, it's so dumb lmao

@@RealValkor while the effect you're describing _is_ anti aliasing, the anti aliasing would be fixed with point filtering.
@@RealValkor I would think this would be because of texture filtering as opposed to anti-aliasing. Anti-aliasing blurs the edges whereas texture filtering blurs pixels between nearby pixels. This was hard to look up info because texture filtering has many more commonly seen names. In Nintendo 64 they used a unique three-point filter, which is inferior to the more commonly known bilinear filtering, trilinear filtering, anisotropic filtering. I've seen this with Touhou gameplay (look up "Bad Apple but it's actually playable") but it's a lot more interesting with Mario 64 movement IMO. The ability to jump does a lot, but Mario's wonky momentum physics does even more.

It's kind of hilarious how well this translates into a mini-game because the difficulty increases gradually. I think the one thing that would make it better is if touching the black was a bit more punishing, like at the very least it should take a point away immediately on touching.
