I used to camp at Starved rock in the 1980's and got to know a farmer very well. One time while visiting, he told me about the Starved rock murders and how he thought Chester was innocent. I don't remember all the reasons since that was 30 years ago, but one detail always stuck out. He told me that Chester's family was dirt poor and that after Chester's conviction, his family was suddenly flush with cash. Everyone noticed because suddenly they had new cars and other obvious new things. I'm not sure what that says about the case, but the farmer was certain that the family was paid off by the real killer(s), which he suspected would be traced back to the three husbands of the three of ladies killed. I didn't know that there was a documentary so ill have to watch it.

I was an intern ranger at Starved Rock! I only heard a little bit about the murders, so it's interesting to hear a more in depth story. I think you can still buy a book at the visitor center about the murders, but I'm not too sure. If you work there as a intern ranger then you probably are well aware that people die out at that State Park every year from wandering off of the trails in falling into the canyons. I'm sure that happened once or twice when you were working out there. It's another thing they keep hush hush unfortunately. I was told by a ranger if people actually knew how many people died out there every year they would be amazed

Great suggestion. I would like to piggy back off that request and also suggest covering King Leopold II of Belgium - owner of the "Congo Free State," possibly the single worst person in the entire "Scramble for Africa" colonial era, whose actions led directly to the fate that befell Ota and his family. Dr. Grande - how about doing a video on Francesco Schettino, the Captain of the Costa Concordia, who negligently wrecked the ship causing 32 deaths, then was one of the first people to hop in a life boat and abandon ship.
An alternative would be Captain Lee Joon-Seok, responsible for the MV Sewol sinking, which cost over 300 lives as he abandoned ship. The psyche going on with ship captains who create a mass disaster and immediately abandon everyone to save themselves is certainly interesting, and frankly hard to understand.

I think it's highly possible that only one man could carry out a crime against three women, especially given the decade that the crime occurred in. In general women acted and behaved more submissive and coercing three "proper ladies" doesn't seem impossible at all. I don't know if it was Chester or not but he could have easily grabbed one of the women and threatened harm to her if the other two did not comply. I think it's less likely more than one person committed the crime of murder at a time 🤷‍♀️

This was a great explanation of the case. Agree, the documentary was too entertaining to be an effective learning tool for the viewer. Agree, there had to be an accomplice. I don't buy the whole "threaten with a tree branch" thing at all. What is he, the Incredible Hulk? He pulls off a tree limb and waves it around. You are not going to pick up some random piece of dead fallen tree, that is going to work as a weapon.

Wouldn't the 3 just reason that while one is going to take a beating, at least 1 of the other 2 can get to help, or far enough that screams would be heard. I just don't see 3 adults surrendering to one stick. Thanks..

Been to Starved Rock several times, when younger with my family and as a young adult with friends.
One time with friends we went off trail and hiked up and down the canyons for hours, never getting tired...I actually felt stronger.
Back at camp later another camper told us the Indians that lived in the area in the past considered it a spiritual place, a place of energy.
I know all us guys hiking and climbing that day felt energized.
I read about this case several years ago and was surprised that I had never heard about it before considering my association to Starved Rock.
How it got the name "Starved Rock" is another story...a story about Indians

The Indians were being forced off their land by settlers and battles were occurring...so the US army got involved.
The Indians retreated to their sacried land and eventually ended up at the top of Starved Rock, surrounded by the US army...and were Starved to death cuz they wouldn't surrender.
Didn't have reservations than, they wanted the Indians to move out...further west. Indians said, this is our land and started fighting the settlers.
I'm almost sure it was the Illinois Indian tribe.

Dr Grande, you said something both interesting and troubling in this video. It was about how at the time the confession was acceptable and admissible then but wouldn’t be today. This is a very short period of time. Have you considered how the zeitgeist changes over time in law? In the 1500’s you could be hanged for stealing a chicken, but today it’s hardly a misdemeanour. Over long spans of time it’s understandable, but this has happened in my lifetime. I think it’s a very interesting phenomenon, the changing zeitgeist of justice over perceptible time.

    • @JeannetteShoreland
      @JeannetteShoreland 3 роки тому +6

If this crime had been committed today, I do think the confession would not have the same significance for his conviction. DNA evidence and crime scene investigative techniques have come a long way in the past 50-60 years in determining the guilt or innocence of the accused.

I once got busted smoking pot at a local park and the cop called my uncle instead of my mom bc he knew him. My dad was an Sgt. With the county and received a traumatic brain injury on the job and was in rehabilitation. The copper who arrested me ( he never charged me) called me the devil for smoking the devil's lettuce. It was 1994 or five, it's not like it was 1929 refer madness! 🤣

I live in LaSalle County near Starved Rock. I grew up hearing about this story and seeing he was up for parole every year. There was a local thug "Smoky Wrona" who was thought to have possibly done this. Supposedly he confessed the murders to his sister on his deathbed. You can see the video of Smoky's sister talking about it on UA-cam, Alice Wrona talks about her brother's role in the Starved Rock Murders. It will be interesting to see what the DNA evidence yields. I hope it is something definite.
