HARD OFF Retro Game Hunting in Tokyo (Right in My Backyard)

- In the neighborhood of Kichijoji here in Tokyo, I discovered that there's a Hard Off that I hadn't been to yet, and that it might contain a whole lot of retro gaming goodness. So I jumped on the train, and headed west.

I love melty blood and poverty fighters.
Mutant league hockey is a gem. And Victorman series was a lot of fun.
9:49 timing was perfect
Nice run, Jim! I played Melty Blood for the first time in Taito Station. Loved the controls and the speed of the game!
Yeah, it's a great series, there's a new entry on the Switch that I'd like to try but it's like $100
@@MadPanicGaming What!? Thats crazy. I'll look it up.
Thanks! Always look forward to these!
Another great upload. And the great music remixes. 😊😊
I’m watching from Tokyo and heading out to go shopping soon to buy all the games!
Lol, save some for the rest of us!
Just arrived in Japan today, so ready to go game hunting. Thanks for all your vids 😁
My pleasure. Happy hunting.
Cool! That TwinBee game looks like it plays similarly to Sparkster/Rocket Knight...didn't know that game existed; thanks, Jim!
Oh yeah, I can't believe I didn't mention that lol, the jet booster ability is a lot like Rocket Knight
I love how DenDen drops in the Mega Man commercials
Actually, that's all me, I've been editing the game hunts and leaving most of the reviews to Dennis
@@MadPanicGaming Oh fooled me! Mega Man love all around!
Great video as usual!
Thank you!
I love kichijoji. Beautiful place!
I know something for sure, you can buy a lot of PS2 games in Japan with exceedingly good quality cases on them for Y100+. When I get over there in August I will buy at least 10 of them just for the cases because PS2 cases in good condition are really rare in the UK/USA.
Very cool video thank you
The Klonoa series is definitely one of my favorites.
Fantastic series, I'd still like to pick up the HD collection
Very cool game hunting trip Jim. You can really find every game known to man in Japan LOL 👍👍😎😎🆒🆒🕹🕹🎮🎮
Out of all of the bands that have done video game tie-ins (Aerosmith, Seikima-II, KISS), I'm kind of surprised GWAR isn't one of them...Sure they were in Beavis and Butt-Head, but that's a reference, it's a bit different from Psycho Circus.
08:06 that Pokemon Pokedex though! That Melty Blood box too. I got excited
I've always wanted to visit Japan someday, And I heard of Hard off stores, it is amazing to see games like Famicom or Super Famicom and N64 games are cartridge only and obviously I love seeing completed in boxes. Awesome video.👍
I saw NBA Live 2002 with Jordan on the cover. In the States, Steve Francis was the cover athlete for that game. Very cool. I saw games that were priced ok.
I wouldn't have thought that Wizards era Jordan would be on the cover of any games lol
@@MadPanicGaming Hahahaha
I love the Gwar t-shirt!
10:46 I heard that is Miyamoto’s handwriting on that cart.
That explains the $1,000 price tag I guess
It's always a cool ride to a Hard Off. That TwinBee game seems to be a good one too. Also, Melty Blood was a nice game, I need to play the new one too.
Same here, I still never played the one on the Switch, but it sells for like $100
cool games... i must get into melty blood...soon or later....
Great series, especially if you like speedier, more combo centric fighting games.
I played klonoa 2 way back the early years on the PS2.
Well, you can't always have a 100% score on Hardoff's. But thanks anyway for making the effort. Pop'n TwinBee: Rainbow Bell Adventures looks very fun. 👍
Very true, but it wouldn't be a hunt if you were always guaranteed success. Oh, and Rainbow Bell Adventure is awesome, highly recommended if you like 16-bit platformers.
Millennial moment 11:10
Thanks for this one! Good to see some handhelds still kicking around. I've recently found it harder to find handhelds compared to full sized consoles in Japan. Have you experienced this?
Is there something I don't know?
Yeah, don't come across nearly as many handhelds as consoles, unless I'm looking in the junk section, usually quite a few in there
@Mad Panic Gaming that's a shame because I have no experience restoring those.
I only see some operational ones behind glass, and those are usually special editions.
Thanks for confirming my observation though. I thought I was going crazy.
Yes the most current Melty Blood, called Melty Blood Type Lumina is for switch, PS4/5, PC and Xbox. They released physical editions for only switch and PS4, in Japan only 😔. The PS4 regular version goes for at or a little over 100, while the switch version goes for more at around 120 to 130. I get triggered every day they never released a physical version anywhere else, or even a second shipment in Japan, since it's such a beautiful well made fighting game.
Twinbee Rainbow Bell Adventure is awesome, unlike the PAL version, the Japanese version is not linear, and it has more content than the PAL version. I bought a copy of the Japanese version years ago, I need to get around to playing it again sometime. It's not just about finishing levels and collecting bells, there are also fairies to collect, ala Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius that counts at the end towards game completed percentage as well. Some are in plain sight, some are hidden.
You mention the Twinbee puzzler, Twinbee Taisen Puzzle Dama, which also has the original Taisen Puzzle Dama from arcades in it as well. My PS2 sadly won't play my copy, but an emulator will (It's not on the list of PS1 games a PS2 won't run from the Japan region oddly enough). My friend got me a copy years back, because I could never find the ISO of the damned thing, but a few years after I got my copy, ISO's started appearing on ROM sites for the game, too late, it's in my collection.
Ah cool, I wasn't aware there were any differences between the two regions. I guess that's not unusual though, games being altered back in the day to presumably be more appealing to western audiences, even though in hindsight the changes were almost always for the worse.
@@MadPanicGaming Yeah better off with the Japanese version. My understanding is Pop N Twinbee also had content cut from the European release. No I don't live in PAL territories, and the only PAL game was one a UK friend sent me years ago, Castlevania Chronicles for PS1, but I'd never want games from that region at all, give me the US, or in some cases, the uncensored Japanese versions of some of these games (Like Fatal Fury 2 and Special, kinda wish I had waited to buy the Japanese versions, Mai's body physics work great in those versions on the SFC).
man this hard off was impressive!
The video I'm working on for next month puts this one to shame, I found a mountain of games in west Tokyo!
@@MadPanicGaming There are times I wish I could reach my hands through my TV screen and grab the games myself, of course I'd have to find a way to send some money back through the screen. Ah well, maybe one day the technology will exist.
That Saturn is tempting! Speaking of, if you were to get a jp Saturn, which version would you buy?
That special edition caramel Super Famicom, yikes!
The result of Nintendo using a bad plastic for the console, and the amount of smoking some Japanese people do. I once watched Doraemon's voice actress 1 CC Arkanoid arcade, and she smoked like a train throughout it. That explains why her voice is so raspy too, though at this point of her life, she is old, and can't even remember ever voice acting due to Alzheimers, poor lady.
yeah I might be due for another import PS2 pickup! might have to look into that SEGA AGES tetris collection, definitely a fan of that series. also have to look for the twinbee platformer, it seems like a fun one! too bad that wasn't one of the better hard-offs, a building that big seemed like it would've been a good one! ah well.
Yeah, I was hoping to find a mountain of games, but this place specializes more in audio equipment and general electronics. No problem though, I found my precious mountain for next month's video
Man I would have picked so much Sengoku Basara for PS2 at only 100Y
Always fun to go hunting. The last 3 years, ive been only after famicom and super famicom games. Do you have a specific place for us to sign up and buy? Been wanting gradius and guerilla war on the famicom lately. Boxed...maybe. Well, gradius for sure. Peace and thank you from WA State!-)
I ship all of my games via my Patreon page, link in the description of every video. People sign up for a monthly subscription, tell me what games they're looking for, and I take care of the rest.
Weird that female corrin amiibo is 16500 yen when it was reprinted already weeks ago...
How much was the atari stuff?
4:55 why is a Game Boy Color 5,500 yen more expansive than a complete switch? It’s not even a limited edition color from the looks of it.
How much would you pay expect to pay for Mother 2 (Earthbound)?
No Saturn or Dreamcast games? Ok I'll skip that Hard Off on my trip then
Yeah, bummer
Gotta have more xylophone
Why did you ignore Chrono Cross? Is it really common in Japan.
When are Jim and that tiny chick going on a trip to pound town lol
That Neo Geo CD was so overpriced ugh. No junk section?
You saw the junk section lol, not much in the way of games
Help me buy games in Japan, please
The super famicom is so cheap
lol i'm also of the thought of why is boba fett so popular
He just looks kind of cool, so I guess that's it. I remember reading the Bounty Hunter Wars novels as a kid, they were cool, fleshed his character out a lot more, but general audiences wouldn't be aware of all of that
It's not a good time to buy ps2 games In America there over priced I put 70 ps2 games on hard drive in my fat ps2
