The modern retro compilations are what I find most interesting. Another device to play retro compilations is a bit boring. But having a way to support developers making new content on old devices, for devices you don’t have anymore is pretty cool.
I won’t buy a mega drive again, but i love it how people are now pushing that thing to new heights, and buying a cartridge on something more modern to support them is pretty cool. And the physical thing helps the retro feel.

But I think it became one when he overspent on everything without it proven in any areas. He should have started in the USA and then if it did well, then move one. When it was first announced it was shortly after the Chameleon so I was cautiously optimistic. However, quickly I found holes in the idea; especially when the company started going on about competing with Sony or Nintendo by going after this HUGE casual gamer market and being only family-friendly. Bruh, that's not why anyone wanted it in the first place. People wanted a retro console, people who are older than dirt like me. We didn't want casual, we wanted true, classic, retro gaming. That's when the cracks for me started to appear and now I have fully written off the system. Now I just sit back and watch Intelliboomers drink the Kool-Aid.

Tommy was serious about making the product happen but he found himself way in over his head and rather than just throw in the towel & move on, he kept making blunder after blunder. It sucks because I grew up watching Tommy Tallerico on the original G4TV co-hosting both Judgement Day & Electric Playground with Victor Lucas and even though I don't care about Intellivision, I was rooting for Tommy to succeed but instead he fell down the proverbial rabbit hole & has shown no sign of getting out.

    • @ccricers
      @ccricers Рік тому +8

@@DragonHeart613 PR blunders aside he really exaggerated the progress of the console. Last November he put out an official announcement saying the Amico has left pre-production and entered "formal production". These may be weasel words because I don't know if it actually means something in the industry, but when the average buyer with a interest in Amico reads that, they are more than likely to assume: great, they have some factory out there spitting out complete Amico consoles and all they have to do next is ship them to stores and warehouses. 10 months later, where did this "formal production" take them? That announcement was easily one of the dumbest moments for the company.

As time went on, statements on progress just became more exaggerated. Amico is what you get if Coleco Chameleon had millions more dollars to play around with.

Thank you for this video and your analysis. For us at FFG we did pre-order one from Gamestop (purple I think) years ago. The thought was its Gamestop so it has to be legit. Last summer we figured it is not coming out ever and we lost that money. Expecting to hear about a class action lawsuit at some point soon.
We were critical of the Amico in FFG Reacts videos and live streams. Especially short updates from Tommy that made no sense. The company had reached out to us to do stuff for them, and our response was we need the product in hand. The thing that always confused us is there are videos showing the working systems. That was a big warning flag for us. If you are showing working systems why aren't they coming out? Ship a few here or there.
The whole treating gaming press and content creators like slave labor is something that happens with a lot of video game companies. We have written extensively about that horrible attitude from too many in PR and Marketing. They want us to make them all this money, and our reward is more work that makes them even more money. We call them millionaire moochers.

Little did you know when making this long-form video that a 2-hour video about "OOF" would be made about Tommy, followed by a 4-hour video about this saga. But this video gives a good overview about the Amico story, and something that the longer videos don't even go into, which is why even if this came out, it would have been set to fail. Tommy didn't know whether to go the Wii/mobile/casual route or the retro route, and the Amico would have failed at both, as there was never a killer app (and Earthworm Jim 4 was simply a fake mock-up). And almost none of the hinted-at and even promised games even got started. It's 5 months since your video debuted, and I guess that the "problem" at 23:20 still hasn't been fixed...

The askers of questions were pre-selected long before the event, were given note cards with questions on them pre-written by upper chain-of-command, and were to ask them as if they were their own. I originally had the same interest as RGT in that it was supposed to bring back old IPs from classic games I liked. Being able to play the originals on a modern TV plus having remakes sounded good. Plus EJ4! So I paid my $100 for the pre-order of the founder's edition in woodgrain. But after everything, earlier this year I requested my $100 back and thankfully I got it.
The evercade is awesome and I look forward to the new unit coming later this year. I have the two Intellivision carts for it and this is what Intellivision should have done since the beginning, focus on software licensing and new software for current systems as well as things like the evercade.
What was both funny and sad is there were a few people who took a few days to a week doing a remake of an Intellivision game that was supposed to be on the Amico and developed it in Unity (which is how Amico games were being developed as well) and the games ended up looking and playing better than what Intellivision was supposedly working on for years.

I get that they did it as some kind of nostalgia-sparking thing that sounded cool at the time. But, as we found out with the Wii U, such a thing is way more effort than it's worth.
Without the stupid controller design, this thing probably would have released 2 years ago. I'm sure it would've sucked but maybe they actually would have at least broke even.

Thanks for the video. I've only heard once of the system, when David Perry mentioned it shortly. I personally have decided for me that i will not back any projects in crowd funding sites any longer, neither will i ever buy or pre-order any Early Access game that isn't an already functional multiplayer game where friends invite me to play it with them. Not because i don't believe in people's ability to make great products, but because the rate of failure through crowd funding is way too high to justify pumping trust and money into it. And you don't even have to be looking at gaming specifically, when ever you give someone the money for a product or service upfront, you as the consumer are very lucky when what comes out of the deal will actually meet the requirements both of you set with the money transfer.
In Game Making, when a dev or a studio gets their entire funding upfront, they usually can't handle the freedom they are given if they don't have a strict and brutal budget oversight, ready to battle anyone who wants their part of the project to become bigger than it initially was thought of. That's simply it - they loose all grip on the core idea and functionality and run into mazes of features and grand ideas. There doesn't have to be any ill will on anyone's part, naivity and blind trust is enough.
That's why i can't possibly support any crowd funding or even Early Access pre-purchase in Game Development any longer.
The DirectX team, who invented the XBox, as the best example, didn't get anything for their prototype, they had to resolve to literal "borrowing" of hardware, hacking and basically gluing scraps together to revolutionize the console market with a console that's able to use state of the art PC hardware components. Only when their prototype was functional with everything they needed for a gaming console to work, they got the budget. So to me that means massive funding upfront, and only then the concept and functional prototype afterwards, will never lead to a satisfactory outcome, especially in super creative fields. And even then, when the setup is perfect, there can still always be egos or external interests that completely scew the original vision, so even when you have a project set up where the prototype was functional before the real budget came, you still have a relatively high possibility of failure.
