@Hallowedpointdtp yea i just stick with ar15. Ecspecially with all the advancements in the market you can build a rock solid reliable rifle for next to nothing. I refuse to buy an AK because they are way too overpriced imo. $700 for a WASR lol
So, you think you can get your hands on an HK416, or, 417 to test? H&K has boasted an awful lot about how mud & water proof they are. I'd really like to see their claims put to the test.
I'm pretty sure Germans, being reasonable as they are, never considered two guys from Arizona purposefully covering the rifle with thick wet dirt a possibility.
First we'd need to find someone who takes their MR223 or MR308 to 2/3 gun matches instead of stuffing it in a climate controlled room in between showing off at the local range.
I didn’t think it was possible to love my SCAR 17 any more than I already did but you guys made it happen. Hands down the best .308 battle rifle period, end of story.
..Although make sure you never take your composite plastic parts to invade somewhere cold, or that require firing your gun a lot far away from the replacement parts supply tent.
Exposed hammer guns are going to have a problem if the mud happens to get between the hammer and the slide, starting with the hammer back in cocked and locked that is pretty likely, starting with the hammer down probably not.
I've been waiting awhile to see this beauty slathered in slop. Time to sit back and watch some failures. Post mud test thoughts: Well damn, I already love Scars, but I honestly didn't expect it to get a malfunction free Pass. Now I'm even more eager to finally get the money saved up to purchase one.
And with one six minute video, SCAR 17s, like the many books Ian has promoted on Forgotten Weapons, became a highly sought after and impossible to find collectible.
Depends on the gun mate. There are high quality Ar15s that will keep putting rounds downrange reliably for thousands of rounds. And there are many AKMs that will fail after just a few thousand. It all depends on who builds them.
"but it was not real russian ak built by russian, using super classified russian steel in mother russia! Of course it not good!" ~muh reliable 47 shill
I'd be interested in a FN FNC mud test. Pretty interesting gun, and I'd definitely like to see it go through the gauntlet. Especially since a version of it is my country's standard assault rifle (I'm from Sweden).
Be cool, but most of those got ban from import in the US. I would love to own one, but all that is left is the NFA machine gun models (ATF's definition of select fire rifles) that cost about as much as a new off the line BMW M5 with the sport trim package with the other paperwork to get it approved by ATF. And the semi-auto models are unfortunately even more rare...
One of my favorite modern rifles. The sleek look and the fact it fires a full size rifle cartridge like the 308, basically makes it a modern M14. And the fact it did fine with this mud test shows why the military actually uses it somewhat.
@Somarik Green One of the main complaints about the SCAR H is the recoil on full auto, so close to the M14. Not far behind the FAL in that aspect though, but I suppose it is preference.
Just came from the HK416 mud test and was not expecting the SCAR to run so well. I really like the SCAR platform and I'm glad to see that it runs so well in mud.
That was pretty impressive. I'd love to see an InRange AR-15 vs SCAR 16, I've seen a number of videos but no one really gets into the depth of is the SCAR actually better than a sorted AR and if so how much.
Penguinius There's no point in comparing the two. The SCAR is a. 308 battle rifle while the AR-15 is an assault rifle firing and intermediate 5.56 cartridge. They and their purposes are entirely different. You could make a case for the SCAR-L, but the 5.56 version doesn't do anything the AR-15 doesn't, and it has the price of 2-3 AR-15s. And for the price of a SCAR-L, you can buy a high end AR-15 that is just as good if not better.
In their other SCAR 17 videos, Karl has said that the SCAR 16 is basically pointless. I would assume that's because the AR-15 exists, and like the other guy said, you could build an AR that's at least as good as the SCAR 16 for a lot less money.
I have jammed the SCAR many times...with my hand getting in the way of the charging handle. I have never once had it jam because it was dirty, or dusty, or any other such reason. The only jams I have ever had was because it snacked the hell out of my thumb and my hand took too much out of the bolt travel for it to work.
This vid was unbelievably painful to watch. Glad it was your gun not mine. Good to see it passed with flying colors. I expected as much. Thanks for the content!
May i offer an observation? What the AR-15, Scar and the HK91 have in common is that there is room for the bolt to PUSH OUT debris that is in the locking recess. There is also another guy in YT that did his own mud tests on various rifles and ALL that did well were the ones that featured a multi-lug rotating/Johnson bolt.
The SL8 is, mechanically, close enough to the G36 that it would make a viable stand in. The only thing I'd make sure of is that it has the vented foregrip to ensure some muck gets on the gas piston which is exposed in there. Also, I had a SL8 fully converted to G36 spec by cutting the receiver and grafting on the end of a demilled G36, and I was far from the only one; so there are probably a number of those to choose from, tho good luck getting any of them to agree to the pointless mud test. (Wish I hadn't sold mine for college money. I'd have potentially been crazy enough to offer as long as I could be there to watch)
Ashley Weeks the SL8 isn’t the only civilian variant of the G36. I shot a newer model looking like a G36c, but I don’t recall it’s exact Name. But except for fully auto it was the same (outside, I didn’t see the internals).
Not only they did an AR-15, they did an authentic 1960's Colt SP1. The same gun American GIs took to Vietnam as the M16A1, sans the autosear that made it full auto.
Not conclusively but the assumption is solid. The G36 is rather sealed the same way as the Scar and there is not really many ways that mud can get into the areas where it matters. The short-stroke piston will just blow the rest out of the areas where it can actually get in.
A big THANK YOU 🙏 to whoever loaned that rifle to InRange for the match AND the mud test. Above and beyond the call of duty, For Science. Now you will have a gun personally cleaned my K&I. Now argue about what cleaner to use.
I got to fire a real select-fire SCAR-H in Vegas two months ago and it was absolutely incredible. I've never encountered a more controllable .308 in full auto, especially for that weight and size.
The slow motion mud was really cool looking at around 3:40 ish. I backed it up and watched it again. :) Actually all the slow motion with thick mud is cool.
I knew this is gonna be a mud teste. ;) I guessed this is gonna pass and it did. Good stuff. Thanks for showing again a good designed and sealed system will work great with mud.
That's not what this test says... It just means they're better at handling mud. Karl is religious about pointing this out. The AK is good at being maintained for a long period with just rocks and oily shoelaces. The AR is super functional but requires more maintenance and access to parts replacement. Both good at their own thing.

would be interesting to see a scar16 test to compare to see if the scar is a good design against mud in general, or just when it has the punch of 308 to help it along

"Oh absolutely."

When the mud test video is well under 10 minutes you know the gun is either going to perform really well, or really REALLY badly.

@Hallowedpointdtp I rather just but an HK91 clone. 80s and 90s action movies are far better than modern day anyway.

So SCAR and AR > AK in mud test.
But not in overall reliability.
This IS part of overall reliability. InB4 AK's never malfunction when clean, while scars and AR's can't run without using the mud as lube.
