It did much better than the AK, M1, Mosin, and FAL. It only stopped after being covered in mud the second time when mud got into the chamber which is something no rifle can handle. I don't think it really did that bad.
I couldnt even think of any way to avoid this in a bolt action rifle lol I mean really you do open the system by hand, mud drops in from the sides and then you push it into the locking mechanism...
It would be interesting to see one of you sit down with one of these weapons and a camera to see how one would clean a weapon after one of these mud tests.
Shiggydig Dugdigerrino that's the one, couldn't remember if it was Hotchkiss or MAS that made it. Either way I'd like too see how the mud affects both the collapsing function and the firing of the weapon (especially if its sufficiently sealed when collapsed) , also if being able to move more parts of the weapon allows mud to be cleared easier
i cried a bit when i heard the sound of the muddy bolt moving back and forth your work here is sadistic but on the other hand i like watching your videos ^^
Ahhhh, I hated to see that Mauser gobered up with mud. Please tell me it received a complete disassembly and was properly lubricated after that horrendous act of violence.... Schweinhund!
I cringed when you put mud on that rifle, I have a Karabiner 98K that was given to me from my grandfather; which his father had used in service during the war. And I would cringe to even get a scratch on the stock let alone throw mud all over it.
As far as I've seen in this mud test, this rifle preformed as well as any other rifle you've tested, because the first round it preformed perfectly, and I don't think you've mudded a rifle twice before?
ther is a place in Denmark, named, Borris skydeteræng, the dirt ther is verry fine and light, even the slightest breeze picks it up, it creeps in everywhere, that is wher i lerned to, pick apert my olde G3 werry fast, and to always cover up the ejection port and magazine well, if not a magazine was inserted. ther is a clip of film in the youtube video "Rare Australian Infantry Weapons & Vehicles 1917 to Present" when you see a owen submachine gun being tested by dust being blown over it when firing, i think that my be a hard test to pass. i really like your mud tests, That is a hard test to, gj.
SuperVistaprint thx m8, actually i think i have seen them, just remembered that now you mention it, think i am going to look them up anyway, but thanks :-)
Nothing at all, he's just throwing out typical gripes that people have with it. I've shot my 95' in .-06 prone. It is not that hard what so ever, and besides people mostly fought in trenches during WW1.
sAy wHAAt? So you would rather have a rifle that could easily fail in WW1 than a rifle you have to turn slightly to chamber the next round?..... Btw, even while prone working the action of a lever action is faster than working the action on a bolt. Just saying.
I'd be interested to see this on WW2 era Lee Enfield. I don't think I saw a video by you guys for the mud test.. though I may be blind. If your ever in PA, I'd be willing to lend one of mine for a mud test.
Having had a Grandfather who carried one of these on the Eastern Front, and having owned one for a while and having carried it in nasty conditions. Might I recommend dumping a bottle of water into the Bolt, Bolt Face and Chamber Area. (Pull the Bolt Back. Open the Water Bottle and dump it in.) I think you might be amazed. Yes these rifles are built like a Swiss Watch but they are also quite robust and are designed to be abused. A little Mud or Dirt or Sand is nothing to them. Honestly the only problem I have ever had with mine is the tiny little sights. My eyes aren't 18 years old anymore. Ed
I would love to see a K31 Mudtest: I had a debate over the K31 beein a good target rifle but would soon run in major trouble if under battle conditions, compared to the K98. If you could help on that argument I would love that.
Any plans for a ww1 Austro-Hungarian m95 mud test? I'm interested to see it because of the hole at the bottom for the end lock clip to drop out after the last round is fired.
The Mauser 98 service rifle is beautiful and has a strong front locking action that can be readily rechambered for a wide range of rimless hunting rounds like the 9.3x62mm big game round, but was a second-rate service rifle. The simpler and more robust Mosin-Nagant (pronounced ‘Mo-seen Na-gon’) - which was affectionately called the “Mosinka” by Russian soldiers - is a much better service rifle thanks in large part to its quick release magazine floorplate that allows quick and easy cleaning if dust, sand, dirt or mud gets into the action without the use of tools. Even better is the Lee-Enfield service rifle which had a rear locking action that was far easier to clean if dust, sand, dirt or mud got into the locking lug recesses, and uses easily cleaned quick detachable 10 round magazine (double the capacity of the 98 and Mosinka which use non-detachable magazines). You can also single load a round directly into the chamber of the Mosinka and Lee-Enfield if something went wrong with the magazine without a problem, but try doing so with the 98 and you will likely break the extractor. The best Mauser type rifle is the contemporary CRF Winchester Model 70 which has a quick release magazine floorplate, a coned breech, an easy to use 3-positon side-swing safety that facilitates the use of a low mounted telescopic sight, and a bevelled extractor that allows you to single load a round directly into the chamber without breaking the extractor. That said, if I had to grab one of these rifles for use in any conditions I would grab a Lee-Enfield (No. 5 “Jungle Carbine”), but would favor a Mosinka (M38 Carbine) if I wanted the most rugged rifle; though the M70 is arguably better for use against dangerous game thanks to its CRF action (better feed reliability) and a safety that is much easier to use than those used by the 98 and the Mosinka (if not the Lee-Enfield which has an excellent safety). If debris gets into the front locking lugs recesses of the 98, Mosinka or M70 you will want a toothbrush and a water canteen to clean it out. Lee-Enfield rifles in good condition are no longer readily available but Mosinkas are. The Molot KO-91/30 M hunting rifle is essentially a refurbished Mosin-Nagant M91/30 service rifle with a shorter barrel, a turned down bolt handle to facilitate the use of telescopic sights, and a quick detach side mount like that those fitted to AK-47 assault rifles.
Good test. I had a "pretend" rifle once that fired flawlessly no matter how much mud I poured onto it. I admit that I had to provide the "bang" noise when I squeezed the "pretend" trigger.
Karl and Ian, i am curious to know how much cleanup would be required to get the muddied up guns back to working order. What would be required of a soldier in the field to get his rifle back to functioning condition after tripping and falling rifle first into a mud hole. Would be an interesting series.
DAAAHHMN! Had to re-mud it! I always wanted 1 of those 8mm mausers in good shape and a 9mm luger. I used to see them in pawn shops everywhere but by the time I was old enough to buy one, I couldnt afford one!
Well, it's a bolt action. Not a whole lot to fail there. I am VERY curious to see mud test done on a Lever action rifle. In particular, a Marlin 336 or Marlin 1895.
I'd like to see a possible ending "test" where you maybe pour just a small bit of water from a field canteen or something onto the bolt/lugs to "clear" as if in combat, then try again. Only if all else fails though, such as at the end of this video. Either way, great video as always!
InRangeTV The vifeo itself is great! I just feel bad for the gun, it's a piece of history if it really is a '33. It's like having a Jaguar E-type and be like: Heeey Guys, do you think the car will start after beeing submerged?
*Was the ammo ALL steel case or brass?* I have a hard time telling at times the color so I don't trust my judgement on this. It actually makes a difference.
would love to see the faces of the people that commented: the 89 is gonna perform just like the Mosin btw. when did re-mudding became a thing. I only remember seeing it in the G3 video and here

People treat this as gospel is because it fits what they want to believe about the various rifles tested. As a bit of proof people will say this rifle performs better than the M-N or AK. True to a point. They don't mention this rifle outperformed the M1 Garand and M14 it also did better than the FAL and the CETME (this may be arguable) that doesn't matter because people like those guns.

Its funny how after mudding, this K98k performed as well as most Mosin rifles do when theyre clean.
You have to test it with german mud, this is US propaganda mud
hahhhah
Romanische050 😂
With former-Soviet-Union mud actually.
German mud has never been as dirty.

***** I will have more Mauser stuff coming up eventually. For now I have a couple machine gun videos and some others to show first.
No rifle can handle? Unless its the unreliable AR-15
No rifle can handle mud in the chamber. The AR15 never got a lot of mud in the chamber.
Because its nearly impossible :)
It would be interesting to see one of you sit down with one of these weapons and a camera to see how one would clean a weapon after one of these mud tests.
+Krista Dís Guðmundsdóttir yes
High pressure water hose.
garden hose
theduck17 Lol, its mud not grease...
***** Effectively similar material
When he said "this clip sucks" I was close to yelling out "This ain't no clip!". But this time it was. It was a clip.
this might be cruel to request but can we get a mud test of Ian's crazy transforming french paratrooper SMG?
That would be amazing to see.
what paratrooper smg?
I think he means the Hotchkiss Universal SMG.
Shiggydig Dugdigerrino that's the one, couldn't remember if it was Hotchkiss or MAS that made it. Either way I'd like too see how the mud affects both the collapsing function and the firing of the weapon (especially if its sufficiently sealed when collapsed) , also if being able to move more parts of the weapon allows mud to be cleared easier
imagifyer Some men just want watch Ian burn
Its as if the voice of millions of Mausers cried out in pain and were silenced
We should see the clean up after a mud test.
Yes but to hear there commentary about the filth.
Since you guys are willing enough to test a Mauser 98 as such, when can we expect a mud test for a Lee-Enfield of similar quality?
i cried a bit when i heard the sound of the muddy bolt moving back and forth
your work here is sadistic but on the other hand i like watching your videos ^^
Ahhhh, I hated to see that Mauser gobered up with mud. Please tell me it received a complete disassembly and was properly lubricated after that horrendous act of violence.... Schweinhund!
+TechNWRO TE No, we threw it in the trash. ~Karl
You mean Schweinehund.
M95
I think either can actually be used, yes?
I feel like I have seen the intro before. Fishy...
I cringed when you put mud on that rifle, I have a Karabiner 98K that was given to me from my grandfather; which his father had used in service during the war. And I would cringe to even get a scratch on the stock let alone throw mud all over it.
He just told you that it's a rifle that survived in his family for 80 years. It's priceless for him.
PK PK Your grandfather was a German soldier?
not uncommon for Germans
As far as I've seen in this mud test, this rifle preformed as well as any other rifle you've tested, because the first round it preformed perfectly, and I don't think you've mudded a rifle twice before?
We mudded the AR15 twice because it was continuing to work. We mudded this twice because it was still working. ~Karl
Ok, well that still makes it one of the best preforming rifles in this test, as most others didn't pass the first 5 rounds, this did.
Not bad, it would get you out of a tight spot but finding a trough or a stream would be a good idea before reloading by the looks of it
ther is a place in Denmark, named, Borris skydeteræng, the dirt ther is verry fine and light, even the slightest breeze picks it up, it creeps in everywhere, that is wher i lerned to, pick apert my olde G3 werry fast, and to always cover up the ejection port and magazine well, if not a magazine was inserted.

they did a dust/sand blow onto rifle test with ar15, m14 and some others. should still be on the channel
SuperVistaprint thx m8, actually i think i have seen them, just remembered that now you mention it, think i am going to look them up anyway, but thanks :-)
SuperVistaprint just realised that i only saw a small clip on forgotten weapons, because i am a kind of new to inrangetv, so thank you again!.
no probs buddy. skol for danmark tyskland skal leve ;) or something like that.
SuperVistaprint lol :-) "Skål! og må ære og værdighed være din følgesvende" ;-)
"Cheers! and may honor and dignity be your companions";-)
Thank You,
Karl and Ian.
For all you do,
that mud's for you.
did better than the other bolt action rifles. you should try out the SMLE next
I would say the Type 38 Arisaka did better than this
+Jeremy Northrop the dust cover does its job
The dust cover was often ditched though in favor of stealth...
ssi1991 evidence.
It's going to hurt for me watching the SMLE get muddy.
"So we're testing...the idea of an K98 ..in general" - and Plato greets and says thank you : D
Just watching you put mud on that piece of history made my stomach twist
Real creative video and educational. Very interesting seeing how weapons do covered in mud, like a real life scenario.
Wow! I didn't expect this to go any differently from any other bolt action!
My heart hurts a little to see you guys torture test all these guys, but I'm also amazed when they actually work
So the Winchester 1895 is the best rifle to have in ww1?
What's so difficult about rotating the rifle?
Nothing at all, he's just throwing out typical gripes that people have with it. I've shot my 95' in .-06 prone. It is not that hard what so ever, and besides people mostly fought in trenches during WW1.
+sAy wHAAt? You'll loose your line of sight loading any gun in a trench. Ducking is is a good idea when being shot at. (WW1)
TroopperFoFo Yup. And it makes me so happy to see everyone unhappy with that truth crying about it.
sAy wHAAt? So you would rather have a rifle that could easily fail in WW1 than a rifle you have to turn slightly to chamber the next round?.....

Ed Cook what a useless exersize
the mud is a paid actor
I was shocked at how well it did, after watching the Mosin mud test.
2:00 how smooth that looked
"bolt guns are obsolete"
Take this to the bank and cash it, naysayers.
I think it would be interesting to see how well the Yugo M48 would handle considering some of the design differes from most Mausers.
I would love to see a K31 Mudtest: I had a debate over the K31 beein a good target rifle but would soon run in major trouble if under battle conditions, compared to the K98.

Any plans for a ww1 Austro-Hungarian m95 mud test? I'm interested to see it because of the hole at the bottom for the end lock clip to drop out after the last round is fired.
I cant tell if the beginning is a joke it has so little recoil it seems like an airsoft gun lol
I never knew the kar98k was that quiet

Would like to see a rear locking bolt action in the mud. What about the Madsen M47? Let's see how the last bolt action design fare against the Mauser.
DAAAHHMN! Had to re-mud it! I always wanted 1 of those 8mm mausers in good shape and a 9mm luger. I used to see them in pawn shops everywhere but by the time I was old enough to buy one, I couldnt afford one!
Could you test a ruger scout rifle in 308 would very interested on how a modern rifle would fair.
Could you guys test the SVT-40? I love that gun and would like to see how it performs in this test.

RPG mud test?
Is it just me or is that still working better than a factory fresh Mosin?
truly a real test when u get mud on the camera!
Having to watch that almost made me cry.
+Michael P. I get that way reading the comments. ~K

Do you think an M1903 Springfield would perform similarly?
*Was the ammo ALL steel case or brass?* I have a hard time telling at times the color so I don't trust my judgement on this. It actually makes a difference.
is the fun more quiet than modern guns? (sorry for Bad englisch i'm german)
what is that sweatshirt he is wearing?
When are going to mud test the SMLE?
What guns allow you to skip manually throwing out the clip and just throw it out by closing the bolt?
have you guys considered this test for the scar?
Eventually, yes. ~Karl
Where can I get this kind of jacket?
Great video. Love those rifles.
Can we get a mud test on the Lee Enfield?
I mean...
It worked in worst case scenario situations. Pretty impressive even if the casing got stuck a few times. Also that was painful to watch.
would love to see the faces of the people that commented: the 89 is gonna perform just like the Mosin
btw. when did re-mudding became a thing. I only remember seeing it in the G3 video and here
Curious to see if more Mauser are just as good and it's the action or quality or manufacturing like maybe a 24 47 or M 48 Spanish so on
could you do a mud test for sar 21?
did kar have a barrel cleaner?
Did you do an Arisaka yet with the dust cover?
yes, so far best performing bolt action in these IMO once the mud dried over the pressure relief holes
ua-cam.com/play/PLj9u4Ts2NpEv4Fnwx2_ig4wVqiONfH1me.html
I saw in another channel a K98 works worst than a Mosinka. I think mud's effect on bolt-action rifles is totally random.
Hey Where did you get Your Jacket
could the mud somehow damage ot taint the wood?
3:10 fantastic ricochet from round number three!!!

do a mud test on a hk 16 or one of the hk line
do you reduce the gunfire audio during editing or something?
do lee enfield, galil ace, and scar 17 rifles next i want to see how those will do.
pls try a lee enfield. would be interesting, if the rear-locking bolt makes a difference.
I would think that a manually cycled weapon would be at least somewhat more reliable than a more complex semi-auto, though there are probably a lot more factors to consider.
this is a beautifull weapon. i really like the look and the performance
Karl,
Any chance of getting a mud test with a m1917 Enfield (p17)?
Thank you! I enjoy watching your videos.
what hoodie is that you got on lol
"Remud", is that a newly created verb?
Wouldnt a plastic tub be better than a wheelbarrow?
Hadn't considered that.
Would love to see this done to a Swiss K31.
Have they ever done a double rifle?
Nope.
Have you done the mud test on a SMLE?
I know its nearly a identical action, but try a M1903a3 next. Also try the SMLE or P14/M1917 rifles
i know nothing about guns but its funny how it looks like the mud lubricated the rifle after a few shots
I love these mud tests. They are very interesting..
Enfield?
this one is hard to watch that's my favorite gun
Any hopes that we'll see a Lee Enfield?
That amount of mud was pitiful. Should have filled the barrel, glorious mother Mosin demands a re-test!
that poor fucking gun
We made it watch CNN after this just to make it feel even worse. ~Karl
InRangeTV oh god.
If you call gun protective services, I'll adopt it.
Your channel is super cool!!!!
Thanks! ~K

Two lugs and a very large extractor has a lot going for it! I doubt a Blaser straight pull or even a cheap Remington 700 would be this reliable.
still better than the garbage rod, today was a good day. maybe you could make ww1/2 weapon mudtest a separate series?
Better than the Mosin worse than the Winchester 1895.

It's mechanically no different than the AK we already did. ~Karl
Oh, I didn't think about it. Thanks for reply :)
