UNHINGED & DISTURBING: Chicago Socialite Found In Suitcase | Heather Mack Bali Full Story & Update

  • Опубліковано 12 сер 2024
  • Welcome back to this week’s episode of SERIALously! In this episode, we will uncover how lust, greed, and hatred turned a mother-daughter luxury vacation into a nightmare. It all started out in the sun-soaked paradise of Bali. An idyllic setting for a mother-daughter vacation. But what started as an exotic retreat quickly spiraled into a chilling true crime nightmare. Heather Mack, just entering adulthood, her elusive boyfriend Tommy Schaefer, and Sheila von Wiese-Mack, a millionaire heiress and Heather's mother, were unwittingly on the brink of a horrific nightmare. Beneath the surface of this tropical utopia, something more sinister was brewing that nobody expected. Secrets were kept, relationships were strained, and hidden agendas were being pursued, and finally, things came to a boiling point that would send shockwaves across the globe. This is no ordinary vacation gone wrong story - it's a case that haunts everyone that was at the St. Regis Hotel to this day.

Of all the times the police were called to their home, they would have, at some point, known whether or not alcohol was involved and it would have been noted in the police report. Any good attorney would rip that into shreds.

Some people seem to forget that as a parent it’s not your job to raise a child, it’s to raise a future adult. You love them by setting boundaries and being a parent, not by letting them run the house and being their ‘bestie’.

I honestly feel more sympathy for Heather than I do her mother. Heather's mom was a terrible person and likely a narcissist who was clearly very entitled and screwing over everyone she met, including Heather. Heather's extreme behavior is a direct result of her mother's parenting. Instead of actually parenting her daughter she just kept calling the police on her. Heather clearly had serious mental illness and Sheila refused to get her help. Most likely because Sheila, herself, didn't want the moniker of having a "crazy" daughter rather than for concern for Heather herself. Heather should have been removed from her mother's care and provided with mental healthcare. Like with every other monster there was a lot of failure to help her before she turned into a monster.

I can understand why you would get caught up in the "Golden Child" thing. After years of infertility, I was finally able to adopt my daughter when I was 38 years old. The temptation to spoil her constantly was huge. Fortunately, I was smart enough to realize that buying her too many things is not the same thing as real love. She needed a parent who would nurture her and guide her at the same time. Healthy boundaries and mutual respect are crucial. If you don't start at the toddler stage, you've already lost 80% of the battle. Giving in to tantrums is easy. Raising a functioning member of society takes much more work, time, patience, and energy.

I couldn’t agree more. I don’t have children, but my mom sounds a lot like you. My mom and I have always been best friends, but let me tell you Lol she was NOT afraid to be what she was, a parent. Back talking and being a brat was not tolerated…it was unheard of in our house. I was spanked when I needed it, given a stern talking to when I needed it, and given comfort when I needed it and she understood how to do all 3. I remember being told no so much as a kid and never understood why everyone else got whatever they wanted or did whatever they wanted. Meanwhile, she was being the best parent a child needed to become functioning adult. I grew to understand hard work and the reality of the world. Started working at 18. Bought two vehicles before I was 20. Paid all of my bills. Moved out at 22 and now I’m 31 and can look back with nothing but appreciation for the fact that my mom was a parent, not just a friend.

I’ll be honest, the minute you said the dads will was changed to only benefit Sheila’s daughter 5 days before he died in a foreign country where she just left his body…. I definitely thought Sheila killed him. Wouldn’t be shocked at all if that part of one of Heathers stories is true.

I have been looking for this comment and I agree with you. Also the fact that the mom went through all that misery after the husband died is Karma at it's best. The Will's wording was just too specific for it to be a coincident. All that money ultimately led to her death am sure she regretted double crossing his other children as she faced her death.

Not only that, tbut the other children from the prior marriage she would turn off the lights, so it seemed they weren't home. The mother had some mental issues, too, that spiraled to her daughter. Does it make it right? No, but there was definitely a motive to kill .

My 11 y.o son's behavior is becoming increasingly difficult, and is always angry and hateful towards me, and it's just getting worse.. I'm at a loss with what to do but I feel like if I send him to a therapist he will just make up stories and blame everything on us like he always does and that scares me bc I know dcf can be called immediately, even if there's nothing there. Not to mention, he hasn't opened up to counselors or any other family/friends that have tried to get through to him. I'm hoping as he gets older and matures, and I continue to show him love, but keep a firm hand when he acts out, things will get better.... any thoughts? I'd appreciate any suggestions

Sometimes when someone dies a loved one NEEDS someone to blame. It's messed up. I know someone who overdosed because he had a secret drug addiction and his family blamed his girlfriend who didn't even use drugs or know he was using drugs. They barred her from even attending his funeral. They didn't even live together and he had been addicted before. It's seriously messed up. She had nothing to do with his death but they couldn't deal with his death and the fact that he alone caused it.

On UA-cam she can do long, deep dives into cases…some of which she’s covered for tv so she’s met some of the family, detectives etc. It’s so much better than the short clips that they use for tv.

I lived with the same hell from my mother. She was completely narcissistic, codependent, controlling me & abusing me. I literally met a man 10 years my senior, ( I was 16 at the time ), over the fone, in a completely different state, and moved in with him .
I broken free on the 9th September, 1993, as I had grown big enough to start to stand up for myself physically, the fights were becoming absolutely brutal, and I could see that one day, only one of us would walk away.
30 years on, I still suffer from CPTSD, borderline personality disorder, and many other physical , emotional and psychological problems. I have dedicated my life to fixing the damage done, (and successfully broke the toxic circle of abuse, by raising all 3 of my children with all the compassion, understanding, & love that I myself missed out on in my own 'childhood '.)
I now have a 3 & 1/2 year old granddaughter, whose birthday falls on the 9th September, the same day I left my mother, and met her grandfather, all those years ago, in 1993. Time heals ( nearly) all wounds, when I look into her big, beautiful eyes 💖
Sending light & love, from Queensland, Australia. 💕

The funny thing is....my story is super close to Heather's. My mom was a handfull to say the least. She was a narcissist, codependent, never had friends, I was the baby and her only person after my siblings moved away, displayed Munchausen by proxy, alcoholic, married 6 times had many boyfriends in between, racist, dated black men on a few occasions, pill popper, couldn't hold down a job, always put guilt trips on me, always needed control over me, never let me leave the house, made me sleep in the same bed as her when she didn't have a lover, she was super needy of me always until the day she died. I would run away when she was drunk and she would lie to everyone saying I was a bad kid, I never laid a hand on my mom though. She put me in a lot of bad situations all my life. Being a child of an abusive mother is tough. You feel a need to protect her but also wish for a life with her not existing, sometimes she would just take all the air out of the room. I think Heather had some major trauma and she needs therapy. I just worry about her child now.

When they weren’t binging, they were wonderful parents. No one had any idea what we were going through. I never told my friends and got straight As at school. I remember my dad chasing me through the house when I was in elementary because I wore his sweater vest without asking. If he had found me, I know I would be dead today. I do believe that some of Heather’s story is probably true. Thanks for sharing your experience btw.

She was too wise to make such a foolish mistake 😉 I haven't worked it ALL out yet, but perhaps it was her way of conveniently believing she
could 'get rid of her boyfriend (jail)', She likely thought he alone would be blamed

I stopped being friends with Heather around 16-17 because she was getting out of control crazy even for me - a big party girl at the time. But my heart broke that things ended this way and she couldn’t have just left her home and created a new life for herself. These police reports only show Sheila’s story but I personally witnessed the other side of things far too often.

In those thirty one years the ambulance has only been to my house 3 time's. 1= I fell down my fullset of stairs and broke my tailbone. The 2nd time my 13 yr old daughter held a butcher knife to me and said she was going to stab me!! The cop's got there and they took her to juvie. She stayed there for 5 month's and she came home a different person. She then flew to Alaska to live there for 6 month's. This whole time she was off of all opiates and meth. She meet a guy on the base and he was supposed to be shipped out Nope he went AWOL and we had to pay airline tickets home. It really sucked because he couldn't get a job. My daughter got pregnant only 1 week before they got married in Alaska. The only good thing her husband did was to force her to stop doing meth or my grandson would have been born addicted. Luckily she stuck to that so she didn't loose the baby. My husband and I adopted our grandson and he is the best well adjusted 8 yr old. He calls me mom and has only seen her son 4 time's in almost 9 yrs.I hope his bio bad gets his act together and get to know our precious grandson. He such a great kid and god knew I wanted a boy. OMG, I knew these people. Not the daughter. James Mack was the musical director at the church I attended in Chicago. My boyfriend and I sat with him and his future wife at a picnic. He had so many fabulous stories about musicians he'd worked with. Kind, charming man.

I did think it odd that Heather's dad changed his will 5 days before his death. Then, later in the video, Heather confessed she found out her mom killed her dad. Did Sheila actually kill her husband?

I also have seen many times when a child is born and one parent completely dotes on that child, the other spouse gets absolutely jealous and hateful toward their own child, feeling completely replaced by their own kid. Which would cause so many issues within the family dynamics and how each member would feel about the others.

I believe there is truth to Sheila being an alcoholic, and that she played a big part in their toxic relationship also. Certainly she didn’t deserve to be murdered and I can’t believe anything Heather says Because of all the lies, but I just have a feeling that her home life was extremely toxic. I really don’t think anyone will ever know the full truth about it all tho

did she give in and give her what she wanted when she threw fits? even 1 time out of 5? Each time you give in, she will know she will just have to throw their fit a little bit longer. That is why they do it, inconsistency. You buy them everything instead of doing the work of raising them too.@@rosieclown8817

Idk heather just seems like she's blaming her mother the whole time but she was the one who was biting, hitting , runnning away...like maybe she wont let u sleep alone bc u run away and steal all her stuff? Not saying thats a good idea but i mean seems to me like her daughter was giving her hell so she grabbed a bottle to help cope. Heather doesnt make sense saying she would come back bc her mom would threaten to kill herself like if anything if u were so done u killed her...why not just not come back and that way u dont have ro get ur hands dirty🙄

Annie, I hope in your research on babies in jails you discovered that most states have the same programs for those moms determined to not be a danger to kids. Babies stay with moms from 2-4 years, depending on the state. These programs DRAMATICALLY reduce recidivism - it's well-researched. The babies are kept away from the general population - at least in the US.

I have heard this story retold quite a few times but the details you included with your retelling is great!! I learned things I didnt know about this story and I kind of feel a bit for Heather.(small bit) It definitely probably all began with the parenting differences between how her daddy treated her from her mom. Then to lose him later Im sure she was angry and didnt learn to handle her emotions properly. Boundaries are important people.

I also think she has a lot of resentment towards her mom because she accused her mom of being racist. In an interview with True Crime Daily, she told the interviewer when she & Tommy (her bf) confronted her mom in the hotel room, the mom started calling Tommy the N word. I think Heather always knew her mom was racist & has pent up resentment because.... you married a black man & had a biracially black child.... why are you racist?

This kind of hate towards a parent doesn't just Happen. Either traumatic psychological boundaries were crossed (via parent to child) or the child was somehow a born sociopath. Was there ever footage of shop lifting? Receipts of mother's excessive alcohol purchase?

I absolutely agree. Let's not forget she left her husband dead at the morgue to galavant off to Capri. I don't want to be accused of victim blaming either but I think Sheila might have been all those things Heather said she was. I felt that every time Sheila called the police on Heather after an attack or theft it was to get attention. Also wasn't Heather the sole beneficiary of her father's will? Why would she have to steal from her mother. Anyways just my thoughts.

    • @Pandy879
      @Pandy879 Рік тому +14

@amyhellman325 Heather was a minor when her father died. It's likely that her inheritance was in a trust until she turned 18, which is pretty normal. Annie didn't give many details about the wording of the will, aside from the fact that Heather was the sole beneficiary, so it's possible that Shiela may have been specified a monthly allotment for Heather's care or other verbiage regarding how and when the funds would be paid out to Heather herself. This is just me guessing based on how large inheritances are commonly handled, of course. For instance, I have a young coworker who started receiving monthly payments from his father's estate on his 18th birthday. He'll receive a final lump sum on the remaining balance when he turns 21.

There's a video somewhere on here that shows Sheila being drunk, and calling Heather a bitch & whore. A lot of people in the Oak Park area talked about how Sheila had a drinking problem. I'm not victim blaming however it seems like Sheila was no saint either

What a messed up life they both had. My heart goes out to the little girl who stands little chance of overcoming all this chaos. Thank you for your in-depth look into this story. I had heard about it before but you got into the nuts and bolts and now I really don't know what to believe. Certainly not Heather or any of her versions. At least the boyfriend has taken some responsibility and hopefully he will be released and will try to make a life for himself independent of Heather. What a mess.

From what I have learned from many years of dealing with narcissist, liars and drug abusers, the truth normally lies somewhere in the middle. After listening to Heather’s many stories, it wouldn’t surprise me if she believed that her mother killed her father. Even though in reality it might not be true. She was probably very mad and hurt when her mother left right after her father died. It scared her for life. And maybe her mother was controlling and abusive? But Heather definitely has issues. And her thought process is extremely off the wall! And, unfortunately it’s centered on evilness.

  • @urjust2cool
    @urjust2cool 7 місяців тому +2

57:51 Of ALL THE LIES and BS...i do BELIEVE this part of it. 💯 It lines up to why she kept running away. Why Shelia never pressed charges. Heather needs to pay the price and take the consequences for what she did but I truly believe she was molded into the monster she became by Sheila and that she was a terrible excuse for a mother
