As someone who has consumed every bit of media on this series, This was amazing. Martyr is one of my favorite books in the whole universe and its kind of like I'm reading it again with your narration. I'm excited to see what comes next!
Great to see dead space getting a bit of a renaissance among UA-camrs recently- it's one of the greatest horror games ever made and has some interesting (if nihilistic) lore to talk about.
Before the remake even there were dead space lore videos starting to appear - lore seems like a popular thing in the last few years and it shows the game was well enough written if it's possible to squeeze a 4 hour talk about it... I don't know how she managed though, I hate speaking for more then a few minutes at a time, can't imagine how painful it would be for hours!
@@RowdyBoy82 Why? Because I'm a fan of the Dead Space universe? Chances are you were still in your diapers when Dead Space 1 came out and that one is filled with nostalgia for me.

@@steelbear2063 Dead Space is a bit more than just the default gruesome death. There is more human aspects to it. There is the whole Scientology schtick with Unitology, whose execution and handling is done so well that their zealous belief immerses you further into the story. Then there are the characters who are written, imo, in a very grounded and believable way. The remake alone finally did justice to Kendra and showed her more human side and her understanding on what the Marker is and what it could do if it ever were to be delivered to Earth. Anyways, Dead Space is much more than just the gore and blood, which I'm usually never a fan of if it's just for the sake of either without purpose or reason. And age, usually, does play a role in how a person might or might not understand some things.
To be fair the one thing i think that was unintentionally good about the end of dead space 3 and it's dlc (and effective if unintended conclusion) was the firm rooting of the story in cosmic Lovecraftian horror. Sure the elements have been always there, but a major staple i feel like a lot of "cosmic horror" fails to handle is the simple thing that the powers the protagonist is up against are too alien, incomprehensible, and powerful and that there is no true "victory" against them. And that is what makes it more chilling, it's still worthy and has a point to fight back and survive...but ultimately cosmic horror was best described to me as "running through a series of hallways with doors from a fire...you see the end of the hall and know nothing you do will really stop the fire...the heros will try and shut as many doors as possible, probably burning and hurting themselves to buy time...but in the end it's mostly futile" The brethren moons were that fire, as frankly there is no real "win" against them. They have a galaxy engineered to create more of them and feed them, the best hope had for a weapon against it only managed to paralyze what was an "infant" of their kind, and humanity is not in a position or has the recources to really make a unified defense against them let alone a plan for true victory.
Oh, but there was a win. The Planetcrackers could be used to blow a hole inside them into their cores and used that ship to crash into said moon a activate it's self-destruct effectively blowing the damn moon to hell.
Humanity intentionally created the means to destroy planets. Why else do you think the Brethren Moons bee-lined it for Earth in the DLC for DS3? They knew about the Planetcracker ships and realized how much of a threat to them such ships could be. Especially manned by people who have a natural immunity to the Marker signals, like Ellie Langford. She never showed signs of Marker influence not during Dead Space 2 or 3. She was stuck within the Marker's influence for weeks while in orbit around Tau Vaultis.
The director of the Dead Space series wanted to make a 4th entry that made Ellie the main character. Where she would drift from ship to ship scavenging parts for her own ship while searching for survivors like herself. Apparently there was some way to fight and defeat the Brethren Moons. Though, an even greater threat looms on the horizon as the director put it "It is better to deal with the devil you know". I really hope that with the Dead Space Remake, that DS4's idea will finally be utilized.
I've always felt bad for characters in fiction that never wanted to be raised up as prophets or divine figures for cults or established religions but there's something truly aggravating about Altman becoming the central figure to Unitology. He suffered so much to understand and stop the negative effects the Marker was having upon humanity from a scientific angle, but in between the meddling of the artifact and the greed of men not only did he fail in stopping the Markers having an integral influence in human society, before it could really start, but hardly even a sliver of the truth of what he was trying to accomplish survived within the minds of the public. All of those lies just to inevitably serve the gluttony of eldritch horrors beyond our understanding.
There was a LOT about the lore that was left unexplored and that was aiming at something more than the main story was telling, I'm talking about Lexine and her child and EarthGov/Oracles that were trying to get to her, then we have the dev comments, about how there was something even worse that the Moons out there, it alluded that the Necromorphs could have been an ancient contingency against a more ancient shit, but the Moons/Markers got out of control or got corrupted and ended up devouring the whole Galaxy, leaving only Humanity (Dark Forest theory/Dead Space), maybe Isaac and Carver survived (they even joke about it) due to the original creators of the Markers, some cosmic shenanigans. But yeah, the Oracles were a very telling part and their role specially since they were mentioned again in DSremake, hopefully the new team is allowed to continue the original story, we were really going deep into the cosmic horror.

I know they wanted to push the moons at the end of DS3 (something something EA) but this new ending never sat right with me. Regardless, thank you for the excellent synopsis of deep lore!
What I never got was why there were seperate opposing messages from The Marker. One that says to accept Convergence while the other says to leave the Markers be. That was made very obvious in both the first Dead Space and the Remake. Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3 threw that out. Nicole from DS1 and DSR was on a mission to put the Marker back to sleep. Altman's encounter with Ada's mother was similar. Her mother told Michael to leave the Marker be. I think there is more than one signal in the Black Marker. One to oppose the Convergence and the other that transmitted the blueprints of the Red Marker and the message of Convergence.

Got my snacks my off-time weekend just started and guess what! Time for another lore video 💯
Finally, a Dead Space lore video to listen to other than British Runner (love his vids but I like hearing other interpretations)
3:16:50 If I remember correctly (not a given lol), Norton was only there to get Ellie. He didn't truly care about the marker or anything else.
3:17:17 - That epic roast of Norton ALONE gets you my sub 😂
I love your videos so much! Thank you!
Wow, the video! And wow to that ending! Chills!
I love this. I love that instead of breaking it down into what could have been like ten different videos, you did it all in one video long enough to rival hbomb. my literal only critique, just ONE SINGLE FLAW in this video.....
"dethaw" isn't a word.
This is exactly what we’ve been waiting for! Wind waker next!

A 4 hour lore video that includes the books as well?! Oh, we eating good today.... Altman be praised...
You earned my sub. Love your work.
Easily one of my favorite franchise. I fkn love DS.
4 hour video? Here is my lore video to fall asleep to for the next 2 weeks!
As someone who was a diehard of the OG series, the ending feels like such a cop out on their end. I really did love the gameplay and story up until the rather lackluster ending.
Ohmygod HELL YES, excited to watch this.
Hope its sequel gets a remake, dead space deserves a second chance
