WHY is this the BEST metal SOLO?

- In this video we'll study the music theory behind Megadeth's "Tornado Of Souls" solo. What makes this solo one of the greatest ever? I believe it's the way the melody and harmony interact with each other. Marty Friedman of Megadeth specifically outlines each of the chords he's playing over....Bm-G-E-F# and A. Listen to the arpeggios in the fast part...it's almost like he thinks similar to a jazz guitarist. Get my tabs from the video below. You can learn more about theory in my Music Theory Course below muhahaha.

Marty is the best hands down. There's the story of him writing this solo. Dave, who is known to be "tough", immediately stopped everything. Went and shook Marty's hand. That says everything
That definitely didn't happen lol
@@cowboygeorge5056 it did, it was said by Marty himself
all we have left is marty, paul gilbert, and steve vai.
Yes, Dave is tough, that's why he cried like a baby when Metallica fired him.
@@davidmontes3956 that's probably the reason he is the way he is. He is or at least was very hung up about Metallica. You would be too considering how massive they became!
From Martys site:
"When I finished the solo to this one, Mustaine came into the studio, listened to it down once, turned around and without saying a word, shook my hand. It was at that moment that I felt like I was truly the guitarist for this band."
And then they fucked
I love how the solo takes you to a journey. It doesn't go 100 MPH immediately it builds up with the chords. It makes you enjoy the appetizer parts then the shreddy part comes in and that was the main meal and you're not too bloated from the appetizer. Also I'm high.
To quote Half Baked, good for you yeah.
I mean so am I but not everyone needs to know youre high that literally adds nothing to the comment
Lmao
It literally added something to the comment. @@Clodnesia any Smilers in the comment section? 😊
😂🤟🏾👌🏾
Fun Fact: Marty had to play almost all of the solos off the Rust in Peace album in one take. According to the Rust in Peace book (fantastic read for fans), Marty was suffering from nerve damage in his picking arm and his doctor told him to paly as little guitar as possible. He only played to solos on the album and Dave did all the riffs for both guitar parts. Marty had to write then record the solos and live with the outcome from that take. It gives me much more of an appreciation for his guitar work on this record. Therefor I think it has to be Marty as the best Megadeth guitarist.
If Dave took care of all the other guitar stuck, I'd say Dave is the best guitarist in Megadeth
@@michaelboyle5805 ZING!
Read the book, I tend to agree. What is fascinating is Dave and Dave Jr. wrote this while fucked up, recorded it sober.
I think Marty is logically the "greatest" of their guitarists. The creative alchemy that spawned The Greatest Thrash Album of All Time was "Dave, David, Marty, and Nick." Doesn't imply the prev/future guitarists are any less talented, though I WOULD argue that Marty's skill and creativity on that album were completely off the chain. He literally inspired a generation or two (or three) of guitarists to rethink their game, and greatly contributed to the very genesis of Thrash as a genre.
Great guitars, bass, an incredible drummer and horrible vocals. The last part makes it impossible to be the greatest thrash album
@@Marcelas888 in a like incorrect way it kinda adds to it at the same time though yknow? Maybe it’s just me
Well said ..
I don’t know if it’s THE best thrash album of all time, but it should def be in the conversation and should at least make the top 3 or top 5 of any self respecting list.
@@xtldc for sure mate
Greatest Megadeth guitarist? Easy. Mustaine. It’s not just about technical ability or tone. It’s about creativity, innovation, melody construction, thinking outside the box, and song writing ability. And let’s be honest, not one guitarist in the band’s history does all that as good as Dave.
Hard to argue with that
Agree 100%
Absolutely!!!
Marty was the Megadeth greatest guitarist. Dave was Metallica greatest guitarist.
@@mattmoves5920 No chance, Cliff Burton was Metallica’s greatest guitarist by far…
The point is: Marty doesn't just threw notes at the solo, he knew exactly where put every note of it.
Yep and no one has been able to nail every single note since, some have come 99% close, but I've never seen a perfect attempt
Chris Poland showed the world what jazz can do to Thrash, Marty took that and added the hirajoshi scale + his pop sensibilities and took it to the next level, and kiko is doing his own thing but has taken and learned from past megadeth guitarist understanding what a Megadeth lead guitar player is. Broderick on the other hand was pure machine technical to a tee
Dont talk much bout the hiro josh, keep it low, please... Hahaha
His pop sensibilities?
Kiko added that Brazilian music present in Bossa. The best example is "Conquer or Die" from the Dystopia album. Best lead guitarrist to me, next one gotta be Poland, or Friedman idk
@@supernothing77yes. Marty is a big fan of pop, especially jpop so he knows how to make guitar melodies and licks that sound almost as if it's a singer singing. It's very obvious in a lot of his playing, especially nowadays if you follow his music at all in the modern era.
That solo was a challenge to me. My guitar playing changed ( improved a lot) after I covered that amazing solo! Tip: If someone wanna learn that solo, please play it with feelings! BTW, I`ve never seen any bad guitarists playing for Megadeth, but Marty is just a legend!
Never a bad guitarist in Megadeth?
False.
Kerry King briefly was in the band.
He's horrendous.
I believe Marty Friedman is the most iconic guitar player in Megadeth history! Won’t get in the discussion who’s the best because they are all so great! But I believe Marty is the one responsible for Megadeth has so many followers!
Not only megadeth,whole thrash history
jeff young too
Yes, but Kiko cool too and add to Megadeth some spices.
Definitely the best guitarist Megadeth ever had.
dave mustaine?
The Solo itself is a story has an intro, The Climax and a great ending. The solo tells you this is how a solo is constructed not just scales.
My personal favorite Megadeth guitarist is Chris Poland .. But Marty is right next to him for sure. He's awesome! Jeff Young is also a really good player ... after all, there's no bad guitarist played in Megadeth.
Ditto
Kiko is also up there for me
@@luukderuijter1332 for sure!
RIP rules
True, even Al Pitrelli was a very good guitar player that everyone forgets.
Marty can't be touched. Nothing conventional about the way he does things. Seen him play the solo live at one of his solo shows. It was incredible
@7:13
This lick is basically an ostinato and underlying bass gives the new taste to ostinato each time
@11:04
Fantastic quote. Many people underestimate the power of good harmony and chord progression for writing a great solo. Sometimes with a good progression you can play anything on top and it sounds great(of course notes related to progression). Western music is literally a 2 dimensional music and often the main dimension(harmony) is overlooked. You can jam over a good progression for hours and never get tired.
Keep up the good job bro
Every guitarist who has played for Megadeth brings a different flavor to the music. Chris Poland's playing, with his Jazz Fusion sound, is incredible. I could listen to him play all day, and did years ago when I would listen to one cassette for days at a time. Marty's spices up his solos with arpeggios and exotic scales. His ability to twist and turn like a rollercoaster blows my mind like it did when I first listened to Rust in Peace. Dave's solos I love as well. They are like a chainsaw welding madman at times, full of intensity. He may not play like Chris or know the scales like Marty, but he takes what he does know and uses it to its fullest. As for Kiko and the others, I don't listen to as much Megadeth recorded after Marty left as I should, so I can't give a comment on them.
@Certyfikowany Przewracacz Hulajnóg Elektrycznych Yeah, I realize I misspelled that one but never when back to change it…. As for “So Far….”Jeff Young’s style seemed too close to Dave’s on the album. While cleaner, it just did not feel different enough to me. I wonder if that’s why Jeff’s solos has so much reverb…
Kiko for me. Dudes one of the most versatile guitarists alive imo. Conquer or die
Conquer or Die is an acoustic masterpiece.
Yes. I love the work of Kiko in Angra!
Tell me Shred.
Tu ama pq tu é br
Kiko is my favorite megadeth guitarist, (though i admire marty greatly and hes like the main reason i started listening to megadeth. ) something about kikos performance on conquer or die is just so unmatched.
Marty indeed was is and will be the best megadeth lead guitarist 🤘🤘🤘
I saw them in Houston December 0f 92 w suicidal tendencies.
Dave and Marty's solos were Amazing. Especially on tornado, and Holy wars
I love Tornado but am I the only one that loves Dave's solo on Wake up dead just as much?
Wake up dead solo is amazing
Middle solo of devil's island is my fav from the album... just so much style.
I love Dave’s solo in Holy Wars it’s perfect for for the song. Even Marty’s solos in hangar18 are better than tos
I agree with all this. I think People just repeat that this the greatest solo....So therefore everyone repeats that. I agree this solo is cool, but not the best recorded by Megadeth
Lucria is my favorite solo
Not only is the musicianship on this album godlike, but lyrically it's also a masterpiece. As for guitarists, Marty is my favorite only because of Rust in Peace. I would have liked to seen Chris Poland on 1 more album after Peace Sells. He was exceptional as well.
My personal favorite Megadeth guitarist is Kiko. I really love his style, and his skill is off the fucking charts
Love how you are demonstrating on an acoustic, keep up the dope work!
I can't decide between Marty and Kiko. So far Marty has done the best work so far, but it may change, when they will release new album with Kiko
Playing this and lucretia solos is extremely satisfying. Martys creativity is something else. Especially how he put the lucretia solo together. There's plenty there that doesn't make sense but he made it make sense and sound insane
Chris Poland is my favorite, but Marty is a close 2nd. "Peace Sells, But Who's Buying" and "Rust In Peace" are both masterpieces. It's like choosing between "Ride The Lightning" and "Master of Puppets!" Which Peace do you prefer?
Metallica has a lot of legendary songs, but most part of the solos aren't made with so caution and inspiration like Megadeth does.
Master of puppets is a masterpiece of thrash metal, 'cause the introduction, tempo and lyrics are perfect, but the solo is basically something put there just to not letting the song without solo... listening carefully, you"ll realize that there are a lot of good songs out there, but with solos not so good...
Yeah it's splitting hairs when comparing Megadeth and Metallica. I'd have to say 'Master of Puppets' is, probably, the greatest thrash song ever but, when considering the entirety of their catalogues, I'd have to give it to Megadeth.
Marty Friedman
Thank You for all this amazing Information
And For the way its delivered
Top Quality Content
This is obviously one of the best ever written, but one of my personal favorites is the Good Mourning solo. It serves as a wonderful work up into Black Friday.
Also, the verse uses minor inversions making it even more interesting
Always dug Marty’s style more, but there is something unique about Chris Poland’s playing, and Chris Broderick’s mastery is insane.
Edit: Kiko is great too
Every Megadeth guitarist was so different in their own ways.
i have to say that marty’s solo in lucretia and tornado of souls tie for me as the best metal solo i was completely blown away when i first heard lucretia it was like sex for my ears
Lucretia man 🤤 what an experience
Marty Friedman and Chris Poland are the greatest Megadeth guitarists imo.
The reason i put Chris Poland in there is because he has this unique jazzy and chaotic style that really made pre-Rust in Peace Megadeth so great in its own way.
Friedman was the best solo guitarist in Megadeth, he wrote some really really nice music with the two Daves and Nick.
I’m going with Kiko. He can play every Megadeth’s guitar solos plus his own stuff is great. Will have to wait till he has more than 1 album. Also his solo work is amazing. I have seen Megadeth with Marty so don’t think I’m new to them. Also Kiko seems to be having more fun than any guitarist that’s been in Megadeth. He seems like a fan that got his dream job. Love Megadeth rhythms and solos. Truly great band. Saw a reaction channel that said “Metallica is a bunch of musicians that got together and made something great. Megadeth is just the best of the best.”
Kiko is also a great lead guitar player. He applies a lot of music theory which makes his solos interesting. I’d say it’s between Marty and Kiko in terms of musical ability.
I have always said this is my favorite solo of all time. It's just sooooooo good.
Kiko definitely, he is just amazing. He has good finger style too. I'd say Marty is number 2
My favorite metal song of all time. Thanks for this!
Another great one is The Killing Road solo. Kind of like Tornado's evil twin, muahaha
Yea I prefer killing road better actually. One of my favorites
Favorite Megadeth guitarist: Chris Poland. His style was so unique and very few could replicate it.
He definitely was unique. His fingerings when he played were unlike anything I'd ever seen. Watch him in the Detroit '86 show.
I love his work on Good Mourning/Black Friday. Also, he's awesome on "The System Has Failed".
Jeff Young is the one you're missing. Great player but definitely overshadowed by Marty and Chris.
He missed Kiko Loueriro as well, the guitarist who's currently in the band. I'm pretty sure he's been with them for at least a few years, he's definitely no slouch.
And Al Pitrelli
@Keith Nowak lol, sounds like someone who has never heard Dread and the Fugitive Mind
I don’t understand “a lick” of music theory but I knooowww my damn Metal and this was damn interesting and the best thing I’ve seen in weeks . Subscribed
One of my favourite solos too. I think ex-aequo with the solo on "Sodium Pentathol" by Anthrax.
Captive honor has always been my most favorite guitar solos.
You’re a real one
The way you explain all these metal music, it sounds your voice mixture is just too notch
When he talks about the harmonic minor 5th - the diatonic V ( 5th) chord in every major key and in harmonic minor is a dominant 7th chord, bc the major third of the 5th chord is the the major 7th of the key, aka the lead tone, which has a strong pull to be resolved by the I chord. A minor V is diatonic to natural minor but in commercial music the dominant V is frequently substituted to create the motion towards the I. In context of this song, play F7 in the position spelling F# C# E A# and notice how it sounds most natural to resolve with a B minor, or B major chord
Kiko is the best Megadeth guitarist... Marty is a strong 2nd/or tied, and the most iconic. I love his playing.
@Cameron tbf Marty was playing with megadeth at all of their creative peaks. Kiko is still killing it with a somewhat depleted Megadeth
@Cameron Kiko has no respect for the solos live. pretty irritating
THEY ARE BOTH equally MINDBLOWINGLY AMAZING ..DIFFERENT styles !!!
@@mikegallagher2732 I agree. I just would expect a guy of his caliber to put more effort into playing the solos better
@@paulpereira7113 you ARE correct sir...seems like kiko is just going thru the motions at times so to speak..I WILL SAY that his classical playing as well as his work outside of Megadeth is INCREDIBLE ..
While i have loved all the guitarists in Megadeth and always fall back to Marty as my overall favorite, I really cant believe you and everyone else left out Al Pitrelli (the guy that directly replaced Marty) in your list of guitarists. That 2000 Rude Awakening tour with Pitrelli and Jimmy DeGrasso on drums is still IMO one of the best sounding live versions of Megadeth ever.
Marty did not write any of the solos. Chris Poland wrote them. Marty added his touch and polished them to what we have on the release of the finest Megadeth record written. Although countdown to extinction was an awesome follow up. Rust in peace set a shear mind blowing experience for those of us that were old enough to see it's initial release on cassette tape.
I think you should have used a vid where matry plays the solo. I cannot find the right words for it but like how he specifically plays the solo and makes variaions of it to me reveals what makes it so great beyond just the choice of notes.
Tornado’s is great, but I always thought the first lucretia solo was his best.
Really good analysis on this Shred. More like this please.
I read that when Marty joined most parts where already done by Chris Poland, and Marty put his own twist to it. Either way Marty did an amazing job. My fav Megadeth album of all time and Marty my fav lead as well.
This dude mastered the art of laughing with no facial expressions 👍🏻. Great job 😂🤘🏻
Yes. yes.
Tornado is the best Megadeth (and probably metal) solo.
But, do you even Dave shredding in phrygian dominant? I'm talking about last Wake Up Dead solo. I fall in love with that solo everytime.
I’ve seen so many videos reviewing this solo and no one has ever put so much emphasis on the chords behind what’s being played and I appreciate that so much. Solos should never be gibberish “on key”. No, you need to understand the chord progression and Melodies. Amazing video bro, you got yourself a new subscriber.
Man, I'd kill to have this taken apart and reassembled as a classical/orchestral piece... but then lift into the electrical guitar solo.
I think the solos from Hangar 18 are far for impressive. The phrasing and exotic scale combinations are peak guitar soloing
Fucking love that period. Reminds me of high school. Such an amazing well written solo. I really appreciate Chris respecting Marty's original writing, by staying true to it. 🤘🤘
Marty hands down. Most unique, most creative, most melodic, best fit over all.
Tornados of souls solo is my all time favorite metal song, and yes it has the best solo ever, and I need not say I think Marty is the best
Been listening to Megadeth forever and I think Kiko may be the best. He is way underrated and I’ve heard some his solos in his previous band. Mind blowing, that’s why Dave got him.
“We’ve cracked the code.” - Shred
holy f*** 🤣 that was great
Watching this again. Remarks:
- Marty's the best, hands down, but Kiko is one of the greats!
- Dave's playing on this is also stellar!!
- Dave Ellefson got kicked out again, for good this time, sadly...
- Great video, you playing on a folk guitar to illustrate metal is an interesting choice.
Was going to unsub and report but I saw Rust in the thumbnail and all was well with the world
“God dam it Dave” I find myself saying that about his human shell , but the sublime song writing entity inside that meat sack is so wonderful…
Megadeth is an important band. Metallica got lost along the way, but Dave's vision kept Megadeth heavy.
Metallica just got more successful along the way
Metallica didn't get lost lol they showed versatility in not doing the same thing for 40 years.
@@bigbillhaywood1415 yep
They became boring.
Chris Poland is my favorite Megadeth guitarist not named Dave Mustaine!!! However, Marty blew my socks off with this solo…will always be a huge fan of his!!
The bassist here is James LoMenzo, he was the bassist for White Lion. He left Megadeth on good terms when David Ellefson and Dave Mustaine made nice again but slipped back into the fold for touring after Ellefson was fired.
The drummer is Shawn Drover, arguably the least favorite drummer that has been in Megadeth. He played competently but sounded flat in Megadeth.
Great video and music education!
Yes! This! My favorite song on their best album!
But it's not the greatest Metal solo of all time. It is awesome, though. Alex Skolnick's Practice What You Preach and Return To Serenity solos are better in my opinion. And I like a lot of Kirk Hammett solos better. I don't give a fuck what people say about Kirk, he's amazing to me and has written many great and iconic solos. My Megadeth guitarists ranking.
1. Chris Poland
2. Marty Friedman
3. Kiko Louriero
4. Chris Broderick
5. Al Pitrelli
6. Glen Drover
7. Jeff Young
8. Kerry King
9. The dude that filled in for Chris Poland then went to the dessert to trip on LSD.
I love this! Kilo Lorenzo is the goodest. Thanks for the latest vid shredmaster!
Nice breakdown I thought you were going to focus on the solo but love the song it's my fav from them and everyone should be able to agree its one of the top 5 solos in metal but don't you think you should have watched Marty himself play it I know there is one either way great content as usual
7:15 you described that perfectly
I saw them at a small club in Clenn Burnie/Pasadena Maryland, the day after Ozzfest 1999. they played the song on 97.9FM every day for months. You could hear me whistling, as I was the only one in the crowd that could whistle apparently. It was pretty cool! Saw the man use the needle off Cryptic Writings.
Scott, did you ever think about playing this song on the acoustic guitar? Those fragments you play are amazing. That's something genuine, you're a great guitarist, why not giving it a try? I'm coming back to this vid over and over again.
Drummer in the clip is Shawn Drover (Glen's brother). My favorite Megadeth guitarist is Kiko
Kiko's Solo for WE'LL BE BACK is the greatest Megadeth solo in the past 30 years. It was on their 2022 album. It's fire.
Some guitarists join Megadeth for a while then leave because it bolsters their own careers. Al went back to Trans Siberian Orchestra, for example. Teemu, the current dude, came from Wintersun, and made the change because it increases his own worth in the industry, in a way.
But, yeah, Megadeth has only had two bassists. David Ellefson Jr and the dude from White Lion, James LoMenzo. David is back out after being a pervert, and James came back. Kiko left to have another baby with his wife. Teemu is 37 and hungry for fame, and is perfect for the gig.
Marty is ... a legend. But he left because he felt disrespected after Megadeth's management didn't communicate with him about changing the solo to Breadline to something simpler, and had Dave record it without even talking to Marty, so nobody communicated with Marty, and he felt angry after a decade of playing with the band. Chris Poland ... well, Megadeth's 1988 album had a song called "LIAR" about Chris Poland, so ... while Poland came back in 2004 long enough to write The System Has Failed, but Dave just didn't trust Chris Poland anymore. I don't know why.
But yes.
Megadeth has gone through more drummers and guitarists than Spinal Tap, times three.
He was in Cacophony enough said.
Nice break down of my all time favorite!
Marty Friedman is a fine embroiderer of solos. He's sewing every note of every colour and texture and he makes a magic carpet.
Arguably Rust in Peace is one of the best metal Albums- with the best members. I still listen to it to this day. As an Audiophile it is also very well recorded. I don't hear any compression. Instruments and vocals are clear and dynamic.
Dude, you're good. When you're discussing the chorus in B Minor and you play it, it shows how you mastered playing on the hardwood. And then, "Goddammit Dave" - priceless.
favorite is poland, but it's semantics whether friedman or poland is better. they are both, as are all megadeth guitarists, incredible musicians.
There’s some Dimebag Darrell solos that may have something to say about this. Psycho Holiday, Floods, Domination, 10’s, The Sleep, to mention a few.
According to me Marty Friedman was goat at the lead guitar. No one could make you feel agressive and emotinal at the same time. When Marty plays; you can feel calm, angry, frustrated or emotinal. And the sick part is; you can feel all of that at once. He is the goat, no question about it.
9:25 those 3 chords are classical James Bond theme song chords, just listen to You Know My Name!
Nobody can ever top Marty Friedman in a creative, melodic, phrasing, or textural context. He adds something amazing to every Megadeth song, and it never steps out of bounds of what the song is supposed to be. It always complements the song and pushes it to the next level. It's not like a lot of metal bands where the instrumentals are really weak but the solos are hot. I see alot of people commenting that the solo wouldn't be nearly as impressive without the chords under, but isn't that the whole point? Isn't that half of what makes Marty's playing really interesting and head turning in the first place? If he was just playing random blues licks and minor scales like Kirk Hammett nobody would care but he takes the chords and manipulates his note choice into something phenomenal. Long live Marty, King of Metal Phrasing!
Chris Broderick was respectful playing the solos trying to imitate the armonic playing, that's cool, Marty is my fav guitarist, I hope see him again soon, he's a nice guy))
Sir, You did not comment on Dave playing a very complicated riff pattern on the mid section while singing. It would be very good if you put some pointers on how the rhythm difficulties are executed while singing. An expert review very good thank you.
Marty Friedman cuz his own recent works such as Undertow and the ones in Cacaphony are remarkable & I really like listening them.
Marty for the win!!!! So creative!!!!
This analysis reminds me of Adagio’s song « undead » which is imo another perfect example of perfect harmony between rhythm and solo, except one key difference is that Adagio is a one guitarist band who is the mighty Stephane Forte, a very very underrated guitarist
Oh one more detail, the keyboard solo is also pitch perfect
I remember buying Rust in Peace on cassette when it first came out and being blown away. The only duff track on it for me was Poison was the cure. Tornado of souls blew my mind as did hanger 18.
The basist is James Lomenzo, I think he was in White Lion a cool band with a badass guitarrist Vito Brata!.
I totally agree with your opinion!!!!^^
James LoMenzo on bass
Shawn Drover on drums (he joined with his brother Glen)
I have to say, in this album you can just pick any song, it is a masterpiece, I honestly can't tell which one I prefer, some are more technical, some are more creative, some are exceptionally groovy, Dave's solos are raw emotion and Marty is a melodic genius.
Loved the analysis! However, why not use a video with Marty since you were talking about Marty's solo?
Definitely one of the best if not the best metal solo ever. Great content, thanks!
