  • Is the Canon EOS R5 worth upgrading from the Canon EOS 5D Mark III or IV? In this review Canon EOS R5 versus Canon 5D Mark IV video, I show sample images from the R5 and 5D Mark IV and give my initial thoughts during my first night of shooting with it. Though there are endless aspects that could be discussed, the topics I cover here include, bokeh, the multi-controller speed, Eye/Head AF, the electronic view finder, ergonomics, IBIS, high ISO, shadow recovery, subject tracking, and a couple missing features. Since filming this video I have already photographed multiple weddings, portrait session, senior photos, and engagement sessions. The R5 is absolutely incredible!!! My hat is off to Canon. The R5 is a huge upgrade from the 5D Mark IV! It is now my personal favorite camera of all time!
    Update! Here is my one month review of the Canon EOS R5: • Canon EOS R5 Photograp...

    This comparison was the most helpful video thus for me with the R5, showing real life comparison shooting against the Mark IV now. I really appreciated you going over the change of button positions. That was a first to see and has been something I've been concerned about, but not anymore! It's helped me see that I really do want the R5 and will spend a little more to buy it! I really appreciated your video and kids,and clean cut, happy face,happy family video! I'll be watching more.

      I debating on doing the same.... is it really that big of a difference?

    • @deebea6364
      @deebea6364 3 роки тому +3

      Davidson Loriston ; the difference is huge! The Autofocus is amazing, my 85 EF 1.2 was great for portraits but had to overshoot a lot with it for anything else, however with Eye AF, and quicker focusing the RF 1.2 rarely ever misses, and becomes good enough to use as a reliable event lens - rarely missing a shot! the IBIS means you can shoot at speeds slower than you could on the 5D4, and the detail and colour in the shadows is significantly better! I always preferred the colours on my 5d3 to the 5d4, but the R5 raw files handle amazingly well! The crop factor is huge, and the files really feel like you are seeing much more than you can with your eyes! Definitely a camera I will be happy with for many years to come... definitely a camera that will reignite creativity and make every project more satisfying :D

    • @Seitenwerk

      @@davidsonloriston378 huge difference. Let some the lenses are worth the upgrade. Even the widest of them at f1.2 are sharp as hell shot open. Those are said to have a resolution beyond 100mp. And not forget the special lenses that are available now.

    One of the best and most informative reviews I have seen so far. Thank you for covering how buttons and moving focus point works with the R5. As a 5d4 user this was one of the things I was concened about. Good to finally se someone talking about photography and operation of the camera in general. Nice job.
    The 5d4 also have face detection. I think you missed that when your son walks twoards the camera.

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 роки тому +3

      Glad it was helpful! I try to make my videos real to how I use my cameras! You are right on the face detection on the 5D4! It is super accurate for up close portraits! He was too far away and the 5D4 couldn't find his face :( But yeah it wasn't my best focusing job ever as I was trying to hold the camera I was recording on. Haha!

    • @MrKadoux83

      @@ShaneLongPhotography
      using face tracking you should with 5d4 have to used all the collimators with the option which allows you to determine the starting collimator of the Ai servo (aufocus selects the relevant collimators for tracking the face).
      It's obviously not more efficient than the R5 but you would have had many fewer missed photos.
      If the majority of photographers had results as bad as your Ai Servo demonstration on the 5d4 it would have been known quickly :)
      Once again, this fact will not change the conclusion: the R5's autofocus is much better by far :)
      Thank you very much for your comparison which is very useful.

    Hi , great detailed and real world review. A couple of other points that might be useful to people are as a hybrid shooter (coming from the 5d4 to the R5) there is the benefit of being able to shoot video through the view finder which really comes into its own on sunny days when the LCD is often so hard to see on the 5D4 . Another is for us retired folk with bad knees the flip out screen makes a heck of a difference for getting those low or overhead shots it is the one thing that if the 5d4 had had I would have kept it longer.

    • @ShaneLongPhotography

    Love the video as its one of the first in depth videos that talks about still photos and not video. Thank you for sharing. I believe you stated at the end of the video that you shot a 10hr wedding with this camera? How many batteries did you go threw? How long does a battery last when shooting a wedding? I have the 5dsr and I can put that on at 4 in the morning and it will last most of the day. Thanks again for a great video.

      You are welcome! Yeah, I have shot multiple weddings now and the go through about 3 batteries. I use two cameras at the same time, but they are both usually on. The other night I put in an old battery, took 370 photos on a portrait session and had 75% battery life left at the end of the shoot. So the battery life is good. I have like 8 of those batteries so it isn't a big deal to me!

That said when I am shooting a wedding it has become very cumbersome having an adapter on one lens but not on another. Trying to switch the adapter and then put the caps on... So just this week for me, I have switched over all my main lenses to the RF lenses. They are insanely good! I will have reviews up on those new lenses eventually hopefully!

Other that getting worried about overheating I haven't had any issues at all and absolutely love these cameras!

      I had the same progression! Would love to see your story. Interesting on the overheating. I haven't have any issues at any of my weddings or even doing sports shooting 20FPS. But you might be on to something with turning it off. I have a habit of turning it off after every set of photos. My thumb just naturally turns it off. And because it boots up sooo much faster than the R, it is almost instantly ready when I need it.

      @@ShaneLongPhotography - Coming from the 5D Mk4 I'm used to keeping my camera bodies on all day. Didn't seem to be much of a problem with the EOS R but now with the EOS R5 bodies I had both of them throw up the *temperature warning* icon before the ceremony even began, but that was leaving them on all the time. Ran through two of the "old style" batteries in the grip on one body in less than 4 hours and the other body with two new batteries in the grip made it all the way through just fine. I'll reply to this thread when I get my video up, probably in about a month. Just subscribed, thanks for the great content!

      @@ark8tct - *heat issues* - It depends on the situation, but I can tell you that if you're shooting only stills, you won't have any trouble at all. I've been using two EOS R5 bodies since they first came out (I got up at 5am to order them on the release date), which has been over a year and no problems at all when shooting stills.
      This year I've been doing more video than previously (although still images remain the bulk of my work), and I've only had the *red* temperature warning appear once. It was during a very long wedding ceremony while I was recording in 4k HQ mode. It made me nervous but I got through the entire ceremony (over an hour long) and no problems.
      The *temperature warning* icon that I occasionally get while shooting stills is *white* and doesn't affect anything or prevent me from taking images. I've seen other videos that describe the possibility of it being linked with the C3 video settings in order to warn you that the camera is getting warm, in case you're shooting hybrid and about to switch from stills to video. It makes sense but I haven't had the problem often enough to worry about it, so I haven't made any changes to the way I do things.
      I still haven't made my UA-cam video (hopefully in the next month or sooner) detailing the 5D Mk4 vs the EOS R, and EOS R5. There are so many good things about the 5D Mk4 compared to the 5D Mk3 that it deserves its own video!
      *Bottom line* - If you're using the 5D Mk3 and considering upgrading, I would *strongly recommend* going mirrorless (EOS R, EOS R6, or EOS R5) instead of the 5D Mk4.
      With the EF to RF lens adapter you can use all your existing lenses (including the EF-s lenses for crop sensor bodies) and they'll be sharper than you've ever seen.
      When I got the EOS R, my only regret was that I didn't do it sooner. Autofocus is so accurate it feels like I'm cheating!
      I've written a lot about this stuff on Photography on the Net, so if you get a chance to check out those forums there's a ton of information from others as well.
      Oh, and you asked about character/color/warmth, and I can tell you that the first day I shot the EOS R (owned it for less than 12 hours), I shot Metropolitan Fashion Week and was really impressed with the image quality over the 5D Mk4. It wasn't a dramatic difference, but I really liked what I was seeing in the shadows.
      Hopefully this helps answer your questions.

    Thanks Shane for the review. I also have the MK4 and the IDX but focusing has always been an issue trying to shoot wide open, and capturing sharp images. I have all the fast glass 35 50 85 100 105 Sigma 135 I love shooting wide but miss so many great photos. I took out 4 RF lenses from Canon and used them with the R camera. 28-70 50 85 and the new 70-200 It was an amazing experience being able to shoot, compose and not have to worry about focusing. You are right the focus system is excellent and the R5 will be even better. Others have mentioned its not a game changer and may not be. Depending on how and what your are photographing. But for most I agree this will be such a joy to work with. I was a film shooter when I started. I had a Hasselblad and 7 primes lenses. When I switched to digital. I purchased the IDS that was the best camera on the market then, and the only full frame. I paid $11,400.00 Canadian. Just for the camera. Then also purchased a number of lenses as well. That was tough selling off the best Zeiss lenses and switching. At least now changing systems, you can use your EF glass and slowing change over when ready. Thanks for sharing.

I 99% of the time do wedding and family pictures so don't need allot of the features but having great focus and better ISO would be so helpful. I somethings take 30 pictures of the bride coming down the isle in AI servo mode just to get 10 usable photo's. Thinking this one I won't need that many which will make for faster editing.

      Hey William! So I thought you could shoot the R5 in a lower resolution but you only have the option of shooting at 45mpix or compressed raw. I shoot at the full resolution and then I have the freedom to crop if I want. I currently export my photos at 30 mpix. The R6 will print 16x20 no problem, so if you don't do drastic crops, that camera will serve you very well and you will definitely save some money! As long as I can mount FF EF lenses, have a good central spot AF, and decent enough sensibility and resolution, nothing is "essential". I enjoyed this review, thanks! The real question, however, at least for me, is how R5 compares to its contemporary rivals made by Sony, Nikon and Panasonic - not to another Canon camera that went on sale back in September 2016. Surely, no one would expect the older camera to be better? What makes both models somewhat similar is the fact that they both disappoint when it comes to shooting video, and by this, again, I mean that they do not compare favorably to their contemporary rivals. So, should one upgrade from one camera that was not very good for video to another one that is still lacking?

    Would you switch to all mirrorless now? Some combination of the R, R5, and R6?

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 роки тому +1

      I just made that switch. The AF was worth it for me. I currently and going with an R5 and two R's for wedding photography.

      Shane Long Photography Thanks. I am definitely considering an EOS R or RP as a backup camera. Probably the R.

    Jesus... how can the canon 5d4 be big for holding.... you must have very small hands... or me big ones. :D hahahahah i think then i will miss the grip of the 5d4

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 роки тому

      Yeah that will be a subjective one based on size! For many people I think the 5D Mark IV is a great size! I have been shooting with the R the last two years (and the 5D Mark IV) and got used to the size of the R. Hope yours arrives soon!

    In your opinion, would the 5D4 be better to learn and grow on instead of having a camera like the R5 that comes though for you almost every time with less effort?

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  2 роки тому

      Hello Russ! Sorry for the slow time to respond. I had to take a break from UA-cam as I was super busy with photoshoots and family life. You probably have already made your decision. I personally would just jump into mirrorless and get either an R or and R6. The tech is so much better and the EF system wont have much re-sale value. Hope that helps!

    What are your thoughts on the EVF?

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 роки тому

      Great question! Love it! I now much prefer shooting though an EVF than an optical viewfinder. In actual use I don't notice a huge difference between EVF of the R and the R5, but the R5's viewfinder is better.

    Always assuming you can get it. Ordered one in July and told by Wex delivery could not be guaranteed by March! I'll have to struggle along with the 5D IV!

    I have the 5D Mk IV and up to this moment I was happy but now I feel inadequate. The cost of the R5 however means I wont be changing anytime soon. The cost is also increased in needing new batteries and CF Express cards. Then there is the advantages of new RF glass over the older EF .... even though the adapter allows EF mount glass. If I get rich by magic I would change to the R5 for the animal eye tracking and the IBIS. Not that bothered about 8k video.

      what about r6 then? It's got everything except for the resolution. But to be honest 20mpx is plenty even for canvas prints ;) and cheaper dual sd cards.

      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 роки тому

      The 5D Mark IV is still a great camera and you will be able to make amazing photos with it! Keep saving up and the price of the R5 will eventually come down!

    It's interesting how the back of the screen showed a brighter image than what you showed on your computer screen during the high iso tests.
    Hmm.

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 роки тому

      In the shot where I did ISO 8000 I didn't have the shutter speed set the same even though the ISO was the same. 1/500 vs. 1/400. I pushed the exposure of the R5 image slightly to match the 5D image in that one and was shocked so that the grain didn't change so I didn't want waste time in the video explaining what happened. So if anything the R5 image should have been cleaner than the 5D image. In my upcoming review of the R5 I demo the high ISO of the R5 and I am waaaay more impressed with its high ISO than I ever was with the 5D. Hope that helps explain it.

      @Simon-SBL 3 роки тому

      @@ShaneLongPhotography Thanks, yeah I have one, it's a lovely lens, I chose it as it was, I think, the only 85mm with IS, I was interested in how it performed on the R5, most EF glass seems to adapt seamlessly, it's probably going to save me dropping another £2k on the RF 85mm, at least for now!

    Do you shoot in mechanical or first curtain?

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  2 роки тому

      Sorry for the slow response! I have been crazy busy over here with wedding season and haven't had time to check my UA-cam comments. I shoot in mechanical with the slower continuous mode. I find it more responsive than the first curtain mode. Hope that helps!
