    And the plus side of you being stuck at home is time for a very informative video. Stuck at home too (Texas). I have shared a backyard photo with our neighbors every day for 137 days. We all need a little distraction. Your comparison is right on time. I need to make a big leap from a 70D. Your review today was on the two cameras on my short list. Thanks for the real world subtle differences. It looks like the R5 moved to the top of the list. (And not that you don't want birds in your backyard but watch feeding them. We put out a feeder to attract Monk Parakeets. We now have 40+ show up twice a day to be fed.)

    Thanks for such an informative video🙏. I'm glad the 5D4 is still being talked about by the pros like yourself. Financially, my only option for now is the 5D4. I haven't mastered it yet so I'm not in a fired up hurry to jump to a more expensive camera anyways. I'll learn what I can from the 5D4 and then maybe think about spending thousands to move into the mirrorless world.

    Recently purchased an R5 but had to wait for my CFexpress cards to arrive. I was using an SDHC 300mbs card and I was disappointed in the lag in flight. I now have the CFexpress its just great. Thanks for your videos you have been a terrific help in setup. I can't wait to get back to Astro up in the Kimberley next year when the Astro session returns. The dramatic improvement in ISO quality will be really valuable for clean images. Keep the videos coming mate that are great!

Just got a 2 tb Delkin, as it was double the cost but 4x the size of the 512....Amazing how tech has advanced. Thank you very much Jan for the great review. Here are my observations re the subject:
    a. I’m using Canon DSLRs for wildlife/bird photography for last 12 years and didn’t have mention-worthy issues. However, the MILCs do seem to perform better in focusing.
    b. I won’t always be concerned about eye-detection focusing if I use mirrorless camera because, most of the birds feature their main beauty in the feathers. Focusing on the eye with a premium lens might make the feathers little blurry which I don’t want. I love watching the eye-soothing color combinations and variations on their wings, neck, back and breast with details.
    c. I’m curious about the performances of the less glamorous Canon MILCs like EOS R6 and EOS R. I might be attempting to get one of those because I prefer images produced by bigger pixels. I hereby congratulate Canon for achieving seamless compatibility of EF and EF-S lenses with their MILCs via adapters.
    d. As an enthusiast I use Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM always with extenders, mostly 2x.
    The bodies are EOS 7D and occasionally EOS 5DII. I hear rumors that 7D mirrorless version is in the offing. If so, that'll be great.
    e. I have a feeling that, on the MILC I should be able to stack extenders and still get AF in the EVF. Could you let me know your opinion on this?
    f. Wildlife Biologists maintain that use of flash for wildlife photography should be avoided if possible. There’s valid possibility that sudden burst of intense light might hurt their eyes which may be blinded for a while. If the bird takes off with such an impaired vision, it might hit an obstacle and get hurt of even die.
    Thank you again for the great video.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  3 роки тому

      a. The AF of the new R5/6 is pretty amazing
      b. If you use the right amount of DOF, focusing on the head will still give you all details in the plumage
      c. The R6 has similar Af performance to the R5
      d. This will depend on the build of the extenders. The latest EF extenders could not be stacked without a few tricks. Yes, it seems like there might be an R7 at some point
      f. I can see that point during the night, but not really at low power settings during the day.

I'll keep the 6D Mark II for landscape photography but I'm leaning toward the R5 with your reviews. The bird eye focus and fast frame rate are strong selling points. The flash concerns are something I'll have to watch out for. Thanks for bringing these to our attention. As far as I can see, the R5 is still not available for general purchase. one if the things you could have covered with the extenders is in the mark IV is that it only has auto focus with the 2x extender in live view mode when at f11. It has no autofocus at f11 in the viewfinder. The R5 has autofocus going up to F11 so you will get auto focus with a 5.6 with the 2x extender on the R5

    • @jan_wegener

      @jan_wegener  4 роки тому

      You mean in regards to the flash? What I say in the video is still correct. When you turn on a flash it turns off exposure simulation, which is very annoying, when you are just using a fill flash. What I need would be a way to force exposure simulation to stay on and we don;t have that. You can only turn it off, but that doesn't help.

    • @markwillride
      @markwillride 4 роки тому +1

      @@jan_wegener Yes, I am referring to the flash disabling exposure simulation. Since there is a menu setting that allows the camera to behave as you wanted, many viewers will get the wrong idea if they only watch the video. Many viewers won't read the comments that mention the ability to change that behavior and will think the camera always disables exposure simulation.
      I'm glad you mentioned the problem with breath condensation on the screen making it unresponsive to touch. If mine ever comes in I'll be sure to set it up from the start so I won't depend on the touch screen for things that often get changed during a wedding day.

    Very informative video Jan. Many thanks. I am looking to upgrade and am considering the Eos R. For me it is a decision about investing in RF lenses versus EF. It looks like Canon are really putting a lot of innovation into mirrorless. So am thinking of making the swap now rather than investing more in EF.

      @jan_wegener  3 роки тому +3

      From a mark iv to an Eos R? If you can I’d try to get at least an R6.

    Hi Jan, great video and very informative. I upgraded my 5D iv for the R5 mainly for the auto focus system but primarily for the speed. I too found the buffer on the 5d wasn't much good if I had both film formats selected. The only way I could get continuous shots was to switch off raw. This had an adverse effect if I wanted to tweak the photos afterwards. I've only been to a bird sanctuary once to test the R5 and the results were amazing. Still learning with the eye detection auto focus. I shoot a lot of motorsports events but unfortunately all the tracks are closed to spectators. Overall I'm glad I made the switch. Keep up the good work Jan.

    RE: Flash Issues - I saw another review in which the reviewer showed that there is a setting that enables the viewfinder to behave as that in a DSLR camera. The setting is called Expo. Simulation. You may want to give that a try. I am still impatiently waiting for my R5 - hopefully soon.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 роки тому +2

      Hey, yes, but I want to do the opposite. I want it to always behave like and EVF. ATM with the flash attached it changes to behaving like an OVF which throws me off and makes it more tricky to use with flash.
      So I could easily turn off Exp Simulation. But I find it really useful in combination with the live histogram, so I would want it to stay on irregardless of the flash.

      I also have come from the EOS R and have used the same approach as Alberto. ie Set up MyMenu to quickly change to Display when I attached a Flash. Hence I was a bit surprised when I noticed Jan mentioned that attaching the flash does this automatically, since this would make the menu I set up unnecessary. So I did some tests and what I discovered is that for both the R and the R5 the following happens, if a flash is attached and turned on: Case1. If the simulation setting is enabled it does simulate until the shutter button is pressed (including histogram) and then goes to "Display" for the period of time that the Exp timer is set, for which the default is 8s. It then goes back to "Simulate". I changed the Exposure timer to 4s and it changed to "Display" for the 4s, when I pressed the shutter, returning to "Simulate". Case2. If the "During" setting is enabled, the behavior is different and it behaves like Jan said and will always use "Display", there is no point pressing the depth of field preview button in this mode if a flash is used. I guess a shorter timer may make the first option more usable, but a better option would probably be to have the depth of field preview button have some useful function in case2, such as override the exposure timer.

To compare the 5DMIV with the R5 it is the right thing to do because the R5 is in the same category, the 5 series and it is not in the same category of the 1DX series, as Canin itself has declared. In the future probably we will have the R1 to compete with the 1DX series and with the Sony R9II, so to conclude very useful comparison and thank a lot for your UA-cam channel

    Great review Jan. I never got the Mark iv even if the mgp compared to the 1dx mark ii looked attractive, I decided to wait for a mirrorless to upgrade. I wonder what a comparison of the R6 vs Mark iv would give... perhaps the 20 mgp of the R6 provides great image quality with additional autofocus advantage at a price that is comparable to the Mark iv. I still miss the optical viewfinder of my 1 dxii ... perhaps it is just a matter of practice but I do find the EVF struggles in some situations... heavy fog is one of the them... but there are also others... thanks again for sharing your experience.. always great videos.

      Jan Wegener Tnx - Canons always had a tendency to blow the highlights. I think it stems from their light metering systems. I’ve been with Canon for 30 years - the odd Nikon I tried over the years seemed to get more ‘accurate’ light metering and AWD. So nice to hear R5 may be breaking that tradition:-))

    The 5D4 has been your go to camera for MANY years? The model is only 4 years old. I was surprised to find that my first DSLR - the now ancient Eos 550D - came out only 10 years ago. I’ve only had it for 8 years, and it seems like ages - time really flies in photography. On the other hand cars were invented fairly recently... It all depends on your perspective.

    Hi Jan. Regarding the 'overheating' problem. Matt Granger recently produced a vid, where he opened the battery door on the R5 and placed a grain of rice in the lock, so the camera thought the battery was secure and started ' filming' after 15 mins he quickly removed the battery and refitted it, pressed record again and the camera continued recording. After further explanations his conclusion was that for whatever reason Canon could solve this issue with a Firmware update, maybe they will? Apparently neither the battery or camera body became hot.

    Hi Jan, I have been following your videos and was also wondering if I should spend the extra $1400 USD for an R5 vs a new 5D Mark IV. Based on your input it would be very tempting to get the Mark IV but I cannot get the animal eye AF out of my head. Also, since most of my bird photography is out in nature while touring I can't get very close to most small birds and end up cropping quite a bit. I also love trying to get pictures of flying birds. I think for this reason I should probably still stretch myself to get an R5 before I go on my next trip. Either camera would be a big upgrade since I have been using a 70D and 77D for several years now. After seeing your demonstrations I don't think I would be happy with the R6.

    That's a worry that you found the 5DIV better with the 2x TC, as I never liked my 5DIV when using the 500 f/4L IS II + 2x TC combo, it was much slower than my 1DX in that regard for speed and focus accuracy which is not as good as the 1DXII. The 5DIV did a lot better when using the 1.4x TC on my 500 II. On my Sony A9 using TC's has a smaller effect than on my DSLR's as the sensor can AF down to f/16 sop f/8 combos are easily handled. I had hoped the R5 would be a big improvement over the 5DIV seeing it can AF with f/22 combos I've read. Apart from that keep up the great work, I'm always watching your videos since I stumbled across this channel a few weeks ago, very informative and I love your easy going style.

      @jan_wegener  4 роки тому

      Hey,
      I tried to say faster, not necessarily better. In terms of sharp images the R5 had a slight edge. But I would expect a 1Dx II/III to be faster with extenders and the version II lens.
      Great to hear you are enjoying my videos.

    • @minusinfinity6974
      @minusinfinity6974 4 роки тому

      @Don P I found the 5DIV overall to be very good if I stuck to the 1.4x TC on the 500 II. It may have been a bit slower than the 1DX did better in lower light. The 1DX seemed better with the 2x although the 5DIV can use all 61 pts with f/8 combos and the 1DX only uses the central point with up to 8 assist points. The 1DXII is apparently noticeably better with extenders than the 5DIV. If birds are a big part of your shooting 5DIV is more than good enough and as Jan shows it can do a amazing job. For me though I've found the ultimate hiking setup is the Nikon D500 + 500 f/5.6 PF. The Nikon 500 POF is an amazing lens, half the weight of the 500 f/4L IS II, similar IQ, much much smaller and much much cheaper and it takes a 1.4x TC very well. D500 AF is better than 1DX, 1DXII and 5DIV IMO for a fraction of the cost. And IMO the best camera of all for AF is the Sony A9/A9II. Even with the grip it's nearly 600g lighter than the 1DX and only a bit heavier than the 5DIV. I pair it with the 200-600 but also use my Canon glass a lot. Sigma MC-11 adapter works very well with Canon mk II and mk III superteles.

    Interesting to hear your thoughts of the R5 with extenders. I think my R5:s AF with my Sigma extenders works really fine. I have setup the camera to keep searching for focus even if it can't find it right away instead of not focusing at all. I have also noticed even when using my Sigma 500 f4 sports that the single point (normal focusing) is a bit slower than the tracking focus is. Have you noticed the same with your lens? But I think that the 5DIV is faster in some point and perhaps better if you have great out of focus subjects, for example you have focus on the background and a bird lands in front of you and the R5 might struggle here to find the bird, it sees passed it (same on the R6 and R and all mirrorless cameras). The reason to this is probably that the 5DIV have a dedicated AF-sensor and the mirrorless focus with it's main sensor.
    I would love if you could make a great test video of RAW vs CRAW! Is it any difference at all between the files in IQ? If not you can with joy use CRAW and get about 50% more images taken as the file size are about 40-50% smaller :)

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  3 роки тому +1

      I have seen a few CRAW files and they looked fine. I think for most cases they're good enough. I would assume that only in extreme cases the full RAW will hold a bit more detail etc.
      Yes, the AF on mirrorless has a big weakness and that is that when it gets stuck on the background you have to manually defocus and help it to get back onto the subject. Can be a bit annoying at times

    • @Smauges
      @Smauges 3 роки тому

      @@jan_wegener Thanks for the answer :) I agree. I use Craw most of the time just to save space and be able to get a lot more images taken as the IQ seems to be identical. I also believe that the RAW might hold an edge if you miss you exposure a lot than it might be a little better.
      Yes, the DSLR with it's separate AF-sensor are better in this area. But I have come around it quite good by letting my lens focus even if it not possible and to focus on a bigger target with more contrast in front of the camera (closer) and that work fine I think, than I can achieve focus fast on the bird. It also can be a bit tricky I think to get focus in heavy snowfall as the snowfall make it harder to see contrast of the subject. But a DSLR might struggle her as well. Be interesting to see if Canon will make the AF even better with firmware update.

    People who compare the R5 with an 1Dx or A9II are completely wrong, the R5 has to be compared with a 5DMKIV or an A7RIV.
    There will come an Canon R1 to play in the big league with the 1Dx and A9II, there are already some leaked messages about that.
    But it looks an nice camera the R5, mine is ordered two months ago, still waiting ...
    Ow yes, I had an 5DMkIV and an 1DxMkII, the 1DxII is way faster than the 5D, absolutely no doubt about that.
    I sold the 5DIV after a year because for me it was to slow to shoot sports and wildlife, I always grabbed the 1DxII.
    So it will be interested for me to see if the R5 can hold up with the 1DxII.
    The problems with the extenders is the battery power, if using an 1D series in comparison with a 5D series, the 1D will do much better because of the bigger battery, so more power, therefor the focus is much faster with extenders on a 500, 600 or 800mm lens, even on the 200-400 there is a big difference .
    Just my findings

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 роки тому

      Hi Siegfried,
      I agree with you, but in a way, I think the R5 has created a new category that sits above the old 5D line and below the R1/1dx series. Simply because the 5D series never had great AF, Speed, Buffer, and mpix in the one camera, the R5 now does. And it can actually keep up with the top of the line cameras.
      Ah, that's a good input with the battery and could be a reason it feels a tad slower on the R5 since the batteries have to power so many things and are not much larger than the 5D batteries.

    One thing I'm getting but I'm not sure if it me or the camera, is with relatively high shutter speeds (1/2000th) on a tripod I don't feel like the R5 is getting me terribly sharp 2x extender shots WITH THE I.S. OFF. With it on, its fine and as expected, but at 2000th of a second I wouldn't think I'd be getting blur, but I do. Again it may be just me, as I haven't shot that set up a lot with this camera, but just something I'm noticing. I'm just hoping its not a issue with the IBIS in an off state. Time will tell.
    Additionally, I was surprised to hear you say the Mark IV was beating the R5 in AF speed with the extenders. I've shot a little with a Mark IV and it was great, only a tick slower than a 1DX II with a 2x extender, and like you said very confident in focus, but I felt like the R5 was better. I'll defer to you as I was limited in shooting a friend's camera, but still interesting to hear you say. That said, they definitely have a different feel. The R5 doesn't seem to focus in the same manner like the Mark IV and the 1DX II. Not better or worse... just different.

      Hey, I never turn my IS off. I would suspect it might be the IBIS/IS combo possibly giving you better results than IS and IBIS turned off (if you turn off IS, it also turns off IBIS)
      I agree with you, what I noticed is a change in speed, accuracy and results are similar or better with the R5. I mainly noticed it side by side. With the R5 alone it felt fine, but as you say it definitely feels different when focusing.

      I bought new 5d4 for 2.150€ when R came out and mirrorless Hype started, it was extremely on sale. For that price excellent camera, lot of affordable lenses and good Sigma/Tamron equivalents. For me is R5 not the option for now, here in Europe is pricetag 4.350€ and unaffordable lenses over 2.000€. And price for 5d4 and EF L will drop because of all "trade in" actions and changers.

    Quality video Jan 👍🏼 What do you think about the colors produced by the R5 vs the 5DIV? Do you edit in Lightroom and use the Adobe Color profile? Curious what you think about the AWB as well

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Editing has been really painful. The best results come from DPP, no doubt. I bought some ACR/LR profiles that are closer that help me if I want to use ACR. The native Adobe profiles are horrendous with terrible colours, so they have been unusable. So it's been kinda difficult to compare colours. But the R5 does well and looks nice when you find the right software to use

    • @rocknrory
      @rocknrory 4 роки тому +1

      Jan Wegener I can relate to you in regards to getting the best results in DPP. I've had my R5 for a month and found the biggest frustration with getting the Canon colors in LR. I bought Color Fidelity profiles too (I assume that's what you acquired). They work well in some situations, not so good in others. Sunset color gradiants are spot on with Canons profile, CF & Adobe profiles don't compare. After dealing with the frustration with thinking about workflow changes to facilitate Canon colors in DPP + LR editing, I've decided just to accept Adobe's Color profile for most shots. For a decent amount of subject matter without big, vibrant color gradiants, I actually prefer it to CF profiles. For certain shots I'll accept using DPP & exporting TIFFs to LR / PS. Hopefully Adobe will build quality R5 camera profiles eventually, who knows lol. I used a 5D III for years, that camera had phenomenal color even with Adobe profiles. I wonder why, AWB & the sensor I guess. The R5 is fantastic in many other ways, I'll get used to it!

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 роки тому +1

      @@rocknrory It seems Adobe just got lazy and stopped caring when it comes to the profiles. Yes, I got the CF, which works fine on some and not on others as you say. For my birds, Adobe Profiles are unusable

      Let me put it this way. I would not go back to using my 5DIV after owning an R5. It might even rival the 1dX III in many cases. To me 45 mpix and Animal Eye AF, with fast frame rate and large buffer is a real game changer

    Hi Jan, thank you for this very clear video with the comparison. I now have the 5D IV but might want to switch to the R5. The eye detection seems fantastic to me and the folding screen is also an addition because I can use one body (macro), and there are a few more pluses 😊. But the use of extenders still makes me doubt. I almost always use this for bird photography, and now I understand from your video that the 5D IV handles that a lot better. The autofocus would be a lot faster, provided the light is good. Did I understand that correctly? I would love to hear how you stand on this. Thanks in advance for the effort, regards Karin
    PS sorry for my bad english, I am from the Netherlands😊

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  3 роки тому +1

      It's strange, the image quality is the same or better on the R5 with extender and if you are only using the R5 you don't notice the difference in speed. Only when using side by side the 5D focus seems a bit snappier with the 5D, however, the R5 does work very well with them and I have used it with both extenders successfully.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  3 роки тому +1

      Comes down to anticipation I suppose. Half tip the shutter while lifting it up to your eye and it should be on by the time you look through the viewfinder. If sometimes happens completely unexpectedly, you might get caught out, have not find a perfect solution for that. Because of this issue, I have actually extended the power savings shut off times, because i did not wanna be caught out, but now it eats more battery

      Hi Jan, as an enthusiast I watch a lot of the more educational you tubers (you are one of my favs as I love bird photography). Have seen a lot of general advice to turn IS off when the camera is on a tripod as it causes blurring issues. Now this be more applicable to architecture or landscape where the camera is fully static and although when you are on a gimbal the camera is moving about a lot, it’s not in the “jittery” way it would if handheld. So was curious if you have ever looked into that, as my R did not have IS no not so much of an issue. Not trying to be clever, but as I am putting together a flash rig similar to yours but with an 3legged thing Alan monopod and Docz foot and a travel gimbal from Lenscraft (check it out UK handmade really light) wondered if there was any issue with IS to take into account. Got my R6 on Monday but my EF lenses all send off for sale so can’t try it out.....my RF800mm arrives Tuesday and no sign of the 100-500mm being available for a while as well as no R5s.....Can’t wait to get shooting......! Anyway maybe it might be worth testing/checking if there is any difference if IS on or off? Cheers Ken.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 роки тому

      @@kenmonahan9924 That's great to hear :) Yes, if you are doing long exposure, you have to turn off the IS or it will cause blurr. I never turn my IS off, when I tested it, I have been getting better results with the IS on. Especially on my gimbal things are not super stable. If I am shooting under 1/500 the IS makes a big difference.
