I have been a commercial photographer for 31 years. Started with film 4x5, 8x10,35mm,2 1/4 Hasseblads and Pentax. One of the first to have a 50K digital scanning back in Houston for 4x5's. It seems to me that the use of the R5 for video may have a couple of drawbacks. I have ask why so many people talking about the R5 somewhat negatively are all you tubers who want to use the camera for video. As a true photographer 45MP is freaking awesome! the long lens availability excellent! Mirrorless for wildlife and any concerns with camera shake. I can go on. My point is if your concern is video and especially for social media bloggers and you tubers then purchase a nice video camera. We use a nice panasonic with an 18-80 CN-E lens. Problem solved. I believe this camera is made essentially for photography but does nice video as well. Most modern DSLR's do. Numerous videos here on you tube about the R5 that are negative are about video. Nothing negative about file size, product detail or moire. Shutter speeds,CMOS SENSORS, 20FPS silently! A great photography camera is what we should be discussing.

This video should be a must watch for new buyers. I use the R5 as well and I love it for the most part. I do film in 4K HQ and I've experienced overheating only once or twice. Even half an hour of Aroll in 4KHQ is not a problem for me. I don't really vlog (yet) so haven't experienced the wobble myself. What I did notice though is that whenever I hook up a simple camera monitor, it does overheat much faster. Idk why. I totally agree with you, the camera is not reliable enough for client work. You just can't afford it flaking on you. It's a real shame. Great video man.

I really like the idea of the Canon R5C, a video centric camera that doesn’t overheat as it has a fan and still has that 45mp sensor for photography - now that would be a BEAST and may hopefully solve all the problems wrong with the current R5. I would keep the R5, the reason why the footage is hard to edit is the h265 422 they might come with a firmware update with 10 bit 420 or 424 which would eliminate that problem. Also, the new M1 macs are coming soon which will be able to edit the R5 footage. The R5 is an amazing camera, if you really want to upgrade I would just keep the R5 for vlogs and photography and go with a Cinema camera like a C70 for video work.

  • @onlysublime

If you record 4K in cropped mode, you get near identical quality to the 4KHQ mode. But instead of supersampling 8k down to 4k, you're supersampling 6K down to 4K. And shooting 4K in cropped mode has zero overheating problems.
and the reason why editing h.265 from the R5 is harder is because it's 10-bit color. all video cards currently out there do not accelerate 10-bit h.265. they accelerate 8-bit h.265. Fortunately (or unfortunately), Apple did see the wisdom in having hardware support for 10-bit h.265 in their M1 Macs. So that's an option. But just make proxies. Only takes a couple minutes.

    • @JHawk

I will say the overheating worries me as i shoot a lot of run and gun even for clients. You can actually feel the camera getting hot, even just shoot in HD1080, but iv still never had the camera shut down on me. On the photo end, i have not seen more crisp photos from any other camera and being a photo first guy, I absolutely love this camera.

  • @schwalleyf
    @schwalleyf 3 роки тому

I normally would not say anything.
The wobble is a problem for wide angle lenses R5 has one of the best IBIS on the market. Many other brands suffer with wide angle problems as well. One thing you need to do is update your RF lenses to the latest firmware.
As to using the camera professionally there are three solutions:
    1. Use a Ninja external recorder (no overheating)
    2. There is a way to reset the timer. It works. I have used it for many professional shoots. You should allow a 10 minute cool down to be safe. It is the card that gets hot.
    3. Put camera in a tight bag (Nothing else) put it in freezer for 10 minutes. This will give you about 1 to 2 hours depending on ambient temperature.
    Anyway I hope this helps

Everyone who experiences these atrocious wobbles should file a case with Canon about the issue. I just did. And ask them to have a firmware update to allow us to turn off IBIS in the R5 and R6. I've had the R5 for quite a while, and finally purchased a used RF 15-35mm, hoping the wobbles would be fixed by now, and boy, was I wrong. It's so horribly unusable with IS on. Even from 24-35, I still noticed a weird jello effect wobble. If I bought the lens new, I would have returned it, but since it's used, I'm sort of stuck with this, unless I go through the hassle of selling it. In this case, I am debating waiting to see if they come up with a firmware update to lock the ibis.
I think the ideal combo for run and gun film work is either this RF 15-35 with the c70 or, for a wider field of view (and the same equivalent f/stop), a EF 16-35 f/4 IS with the 0.71x adapter on the c70.

  • @mikejackson9585

Odd, the wobble isn't that bad, but I can understand why people don't like it. But this isn't a Canon thing... it's an IBIS and uber wide angle thing. Also IBIS doesn't help much on long lenses, it's most useful on wider focal lengths.

I switched to Canon in January and bought a C70 and R5. I basically never use the R5 bc of the codecs. I have a Ninja V, which lets me do 4KHQ and capture in ProRes to get around the R5's terrible codec situation, but at that point the major advantage my R5 has over my C70 (size) is lost.
I'm hopeful that the firmware update that's set to come out soon will give us some codecs that are easier on our computers so I can actually use the camera in some run and gun scenarios, instead of only using it when I've got my Atomos setup.

So I’m a Sony fanboy and I love the all-in-one mentality they have with their non R or S lines. So I’m waiting for the a7 IV.
I loved that Canon started to compete again with the R5/R6. I personally think they need to take the Sony approach though; have one camera that is mirrorless body that is great for video and another for photo, and one that is good at doing both. It’s a model that works really well for Sony.
Tbh if Canon adopted this approach to their mirrorless bodies I might consider switching.

I want to start making travel videos and memories with my wife both over landing and going to nice resorts. I understand anything at this level would be considered overkill, but price is relative to the buyer.
I bought a Sony ZV-1 and returned it as Sony ‘s pretty much stuck in the 90s with their menus and just could not get over it for daily use. In the past I’ve had a Canon 60 D. I Canon 7D. And I Canon 5D Mark II.
I went to film school for two years and was doing freelance videography before I started my IT company in 2009. So I know a thing or two about cinematography and editing but I’m not looking to make any money. I would just like high-quality videos of my traveling memories.
After all my research and being a canon guy most of my life I still can’t find the right camera. I feel like if they had a canon EOS RP MKII with no 4K crop and 60 P in 4K it would be the perfect choice but that doesn’t exist yet.

I feel like Premiere Pro has improved their handling of H.265 a lot (at least on PC). I have a Fuji XT3 that records in H.265 and my original computer basically couldn't handle it so I upgraded in November 2019. It was still clunky at times but significantly improved with the better hardware. I still had to edit at 1/4 resolution usually and would run into some hang-ups still periodically if I didn't make proxies. Maybe 7 or 8 months ago this significantly improved and I now never have to make proxies. So hopefully Premiere can release some improvements for Macs as well in how it handles H.265 processing. I'm a portrait shooter and I don't do video. I wish I had known that the colors on the R5 look like absolute dog crap compared to the EOS R. I also wish I knew that the R5 doesn't seem to be compatible with my Sigma and Tamron lenses. They work, but I think maybe there is an IBIS incompatibility or something like that. I can't get any clear shots with the R5. Even shots with fast shutter speeds that should be super sharp simply are not. I've done several shoots with it under different conditions, doing portraits and some product shots for a musician friend of mine. I have yet to shoot a single shot with the R5 that I'm pleased with. With the EOS R, I get ridiculously sharp shots with gorgeous colors.
Oh, another problem is editing. It takes me three or four times longer to edit a photo from the R5. That's mostly due to the crappy colors, but also because it's definitely a learning curve to figure out how to handle the bigger dynamic range and really prominent shadows that cause some shots to look like bad HDR.
I'm seriously considering just selling this thing and going back to the R.

That HEVC aka H.265 slow editing issue is definitely an issue of Premiere, generally all Adobe products on Intel Macs are slow. All Intel Macs having the T2 chip (fingerprint reader) can handle HEVC hardware based and fast, the ARM (M1, M2) Macs anyway. Your claim Premiere is the most widely used editing software might be correct - only for Windows users. On Mac it’s for sure FCP and DaVinci Resolve. - Even Photoshop and LrC are on a crappy PC much faster as on the most expensive Intel Mac, a result of Adobe’s strategically miss-decision to no longer support Macs when Apple launched FCP, the original one, the current one is FCPX, the X got lost the last few years. After 4 yrs not covering Mac, Pr was back to Mac with CS3, 4 yrs they couldn’t catch up. Until it was necessary to completely revise and rewrite the code because of M1. But Pr is still at least 10 x slower as FCP and DVR (DaVinci Resolve)

Like, even the Sony's wobble at anything lower than 35mm, but in a real world situation you wouldn't be jerking around violently filming a cinematic sequence. I could see the rare occasion where maybe you shoot something that requires jerking back and forth like you demonstrated, but just turn the IBIS off on the lens and it goes away or shoot at 35mm. UA-cam is the only place where wide-angle shooting is commonplace. I highly recommend that you buy the book Cape Light by Joel Meyerowitz. In that book he took one of those old wooden box plate camera's and shot only using that, and that book revolutionized photography. But, the main takeaway is that he was asked if the camera limited his work, and he said," no... it didn't, it made me work differently and through that I became a better artist." Thus, the perfect camera will never exist, and you should use every piece of equipment as an experience to learn a new way to create.

@@JHawk same thing with video, you can't get so caught up in the opinions of people as to what camera is the best. Most of them need to make money to make a living, and saying a camera is great doesn't draw the same attention. Plus, no real movies are shot in 120fps, most real clients would prefer cinema cameras, and UA-cam content has really niche needs that don't reflect the rest of the industry. don't let perfection be the enemy of creativity.

When will Canon get it right? Don’t get me wrong they make amazing products but their mirrorless cameras alway have to have something lacking. I guess they don’t want to compete with their own cinema cameras.

Don't blame the camera because you didn't do research in the beginning. This is why they made the R5C for film making. It's not Canons fault.
