Nice. Let me ask you a question since you also have a iPhone 7+, have you encountered any micro jitters in the video? Reason I ask is, because I have 3 phone gimbals here and since the 7+ has OIS it seems to cause havoc with the images because the gimbal is doing one thing while the phones lens is trying to compensate also which gives me some weird jelly warping in moving shots. The only way that I found around it is to zoom in on an image/scene (which turns off the OIS or atleast hinders its 90%) and then the gimbal can do it's thing.
I have an iPhone 8+. This stabilizer itself allows you to turn the OIS off and on from the menu. I haven't seen any jitters, unless I zoom the lens way up, but that's going to happen with anything, as now you're tracking the tiniest micro movement such as a breeze. The jelly warp may be that you're not making sure the exposure and focus is locked, as I show in the video here: ua-cam.com/video/uQc6g1cJ0s4/v-deo.htmlm31s
Basic Filmmaker : lol. Tried that and coincidentally the phone burned up 3 days later and was stuck in permanent reboot mode. Apple store could not repair it so they replaced it. Don’t feel like trying that again just in case it was not a coincidence:)
Thanks Kevin! I have decided to buy the Zhiyun! You have convinced me that it is robust and full of features. Excellent and very instructive video. Thank you!
The clamp range maximum width is only 85mm wide --- which makes the Zhiyun Smooth 4 a piece of sewage. Phablet size smartphones in protective rubberized casings are much wider than 85mm.
For the past 18 months, I made extensive researches on electronic smartphone stabilizers, NONE of them are able to accommodate significantly larger smartphones in heavy duty protective rubberized casings. I would never install a $1,000 smartphone without a heavy duty protected rubberized casing on electronic smartphone stabilizers, nor either for normal daily use --- all expensive smartphones have to be protected in heavy duty rubberized casings no matter the uses. I have seen too many people dropping their expensive smartphones wherever I go.
Yep. For me, once the phone is installed in this thing it's golden and locked. But outside the gimbal, I haven't used any case, since I've never dropped my phone. And....as you saw in the video, I finally did.
That’s ok. You probably got a great deal on it, and you’ll enjoy using it. There’s a lot newer one with all sorts of fancy schmancy stuff, but really, in the end, they are make your footage not shakey. 😎
I've read many reports from Android users saying the Android version of the app is pretty horrible. Hopefully they'll get that fixed. Something interesting is that the app works with their larger gimbals like the Crane 2, etc., and people are mounting their phone to their big camera mounted on the larger gimbals, and using the object tracking via the phone to move the big camera via the big gimbal, which is pretty amazing. If they don't fix the android app by the time I'm ready to get a Crane 2, I'll probably have to pick up an iPhone (used, most likely) just for that ability.
Thanks genjii931. Yes, I've heard Android users aren't happy, mostly as it doesn't support 4K. Since everything is in firmware, I'm hoping a fix comes out soon. Haven't tested it myself as I only have an iPhone 8+.
That's a great idea. I heard that Zhiyun is coming out with a specific cable for this, but for now I'll try it and see if the small added weight of the cable interferes with the unit. Thanks!
Basic Filmmaker i love your videos. Wow! I looked at this and it is EXACT. Right now I am eyeballing the DJI OSMO POCKET (amzn.to/2SbRRZ2) and if they work out a few bugs, I can lose the phone rig and get what I need for quick handheld shorting.
I have this gimbal as well as the Osmo 2 mobile and I like them both for different reasons. But I'm still baffled why the designs have now allowed easy cord access to the lightening port. Balancing the phone always butts the phone right up against the right side of the cradle. With that design, it screws the opportunity to put in an external mic into the phone and charge the phone. The phone would have to sit (at very least) a 1/2 inch from the side part of the cradle to clear a lightening cord for power or a mic, making it more difficult to balance. A design that allowed for a cord to fit THROUGH the right side of the cradle giving access to the phone's port makes total sense.

Wow! And the grips is $150 more. I've seen some videos where people mount the Go Pro on this, but I wouldn't think the Smooth would control the Go Pro at all.
Personally, I don't really capture audio for for stuff like this, and if I were, I would use a lapel on the people being filmed, or a separate shotgun mic into a recorder. What scenario are you looking at?
Basic Filmmaker only just picked this up as I got a new Huawei phone that has 3 cameras. So I figured it needed a toy companion. But the audio jacks are buried by the base of the gimbal. Didn’t realise this until I went to plug in an adapter
Ah. When I use this, it's for product shots (which I voiceover), shots which I put music over, B-Roll shots, and so on. I wouldn't need nor consider using this for something like interviews, where I would use an actual interview setup. I don't know about the Huawei phone, but I do know they make "L" adapters that may snug into that slot where the bottom of the phone sits, if that helps.
Hey great review. However it seems a few years old video now. But i never had a gimbal before i want to record professional style stabilised videos from my samsung note 10+ and so im curious to know if this gimbal is the best to buy today in 2020 or is there newer models? the fact i like this gimabl because it has buttons and all that funtionality like zoom and everything. Not all gimbals do the same. And not all gimbals are that realistic smooth when walking around using a gimbal with the phone.... But you can let me know ? Also what happens if i want to lets say live stream on youtube with the phone.. can the gimbal somehow let me connect some kind of cable to the device and phone or something in order to keep the live stream good? not sure how that will work.. But i do see many people with selfies sticks with a phone and live stream on youtube and they seem to have this white or red cable connected to the phone and inside a packpack... must be a device inside someones bag to broadcast live stream. But anyways please let me know all this as it is important before i begin to buy anything. Thank you.
my phone doesn't stand still in the clamp for long. It stays for 3 minutes then looses again. Red light is on even tho its charged. Please whats the problem? what am i doing wrong? thanks
Is it right ? You can download a firmware update on the gimbal itself ? Or do you mean just the app which you should use for filming ? Because I have a android phone (S7 edge) and modes like the motion timelaps, or the time lapse in general doesn't work as well as in your video with the iPhone 🙄
Yes. Go here: www.zhiyun-tech.com/smooth4 and check out the firmware and the instructions to upgrade the firmware. The firmware should be the latest, and yes, you should also make sure you are running the latest app.
Just got, using with it Huawei p20 pro. the unit is great the app meeds some work still. in my case no mixed and long exposure mode, and the slow mo doesnt work. also the focus wheel sensitivity cannot be adjusted. still very pleased take some time to get into it and hopefully an update will come soon. thanks for the video really good advice will check more of your stuff. can you please explain the firmware update you were mentioning, i do not understand how it is done. thank you!
Hey there! Yes, I'd like to see them get an update, but they are apparently having a hard time getting the code for that like Apple supplies. The firmware and docs are here: www.zhiyun-tech.com/smooth4
@@BasicFilmmaker I am asking, because Mavis Pro is more stable than Filmic Pro and what's more, Mavis do better black in low light than Filmic. Company Zhiyu said to me, that they are working on implementation with Mavis.
Seen a lot of reviews, some think this is real value, and there are people thinking this i just crap and you should go with something else, so which one is it? Is this one done on an iPhone or an Android?
This is done on iPhone. I like it and use it. But, there are a bajillion of these out there, so as with anything, it would be you doing the research to see what meets your needs. Everyone's needs are different depending on what they want to do with it.
Basic Filmmaker thanks, one thing that is important is the ability to follow objects, and in some reviews it didn’t work at all and in other it worked fine.
It does follow objects well, and I think it has more to do with speed and difference in blacks and whites. Like anything being shot, planning and testing is they key. In this video, I was amazed that it would follow that signage for that bar. On other shots, I was not impressed with it - and that was me not knowing the limits of the software and the unit, and utilizing them. Frankly, for phone shooting, this is a good unit and a good buy. Are there better? Absolutely. I think the biggest thing that has been biting them in the a** was it not originally working well with the Android. Don't know if that's all fixed now. Of course, wait another 6 months (or a week), and there will be something better. #GoodTechnologyCostsMoneyEvery6Months :)
I bought the smooth 4 and I hope they fix it for Android because a lot of features doesn't work well. For example the motion time lapse. Often I can't watch, what the Gimbal has created with this mode. I hope sooooe much they fix it, because I love motion time lapse or the vertigo mode...
Basic Filmmaker yeah, I hope they will fix it. The basic (the hardware) is very good... It's just a big problem with the software on Android. I mean, on iPhones it works perfect and you can film in 4k 60fps. My S7 Edge could film in 1080p 60fps but at the app only 30fps are possible... So it's just optimize it for Android.
Totally. I've heard the problem is that Samsung won't release the internals like Apple has, and Zhiyun has been trying to get them to do so. Once that is done, I imagine a firmware update would be coming soon. The other thing is you could always return it and get something more compatible.
No idea. I shoot without a mic, as I use this for b-roll. If I was going to capture sound, I would use the phone mic. If it was important (like an interview), I would use a separate recorder and lapel or shotgun. I do know they have phone attachable mics that may work, but I haven't tried them, so am reluctant to recommend anything.
If you see Moment videos. They made a video about smooth 4 in which they mentioned that it works with lenses, if you use a moment counterweight, which is fairly cheap. Be sure to check them out ! :-)
Thanks Naice. Originally I had over 30 minutes of every menu option, but it was wayyyy too long. I thought maybe people could figure it out from the titles, so I am glad that helped.
Hey Carl, have you found an iPhone charging cable yet? I’ve searched the internet and I’m at a lost. I contacted Zhiyun and they were totally of no help. Before I bought mine I researched the S4 and saw in a UA-cam video that one exists but now I can’t find it.
Thanks DB! I found it here: www.aliexpress.com/item/3pcs-Gimbal-Charging-Phone-Cable-for-Lightning-Type-C-Micro-USB-Charge-cable-for-Zhiyun-Smooth/32878179445.html
Now, this is a steal. 139$ with all those features. No doubt this is a Win-Win deal. Going to add it to my Amazon list. When I win the contest I will order it..LOL
Inside help on the Smooth 4? Sure. Working in it. Inside help on the contest? LOL! I can't see who entered until I draw the 7 names today, and I only get to see the 7 names drawn. Keeps the contest fair so I don't pick my Mom, not that she entered. :)
I have the smooth 4 as well, i love the gimbal itself, the thing i miss is support for FiLMiC PRO. And one thing that does not work well with the zy play is the object tracking, so if tracking is needed i would say that dji Osmo mobiles are much better for that :)
Yep, true, and that was the joke. NEVER drop stuff, and, then did. What's uncanny, is ever since I said that, I've been dropsy with quite a few items in later videos. Kharam? Murphey?
Basic Filmmaker yo I'm already into filmmaking... Was gonna buy a crane or Dji osmo 4k. But then I saw this video. And it saved my budget and did my work. Still soon I'll be buying something for my production camera... Thank-you though
Oh no ! Again an iphone. People say ot doesn't work well with android. You should have tested it with an android ! 😟 The review was good, but this product is not for anyone using an android phone.
Thanks. I've heard the Android doesn't wok well with this, so far the complaint has been no support for 4K. I rarely shoot in 4K anyway. Don't know if there is other problems, and I don't have Android to test it with.
I had a different experience with the Zhiyum Smooth 4 than you Basic. It never worked and support would allow me to return/replace. It sets in the local land fill now for it's constant software/firmware errors. I bought a FreeFly Movi two weeks ago and have experienced a gimbal now that WORKS. This is a poorly executed gimbal. I am far from the only person with problems.
Well that sucks. I usually try and vet the company before I do ANY review, and they seemed to be good. Although mine worked just fine, I also moved to the MOVI and am pleased as hell with it: ua-cam.com/video/NY3Ll3mnG04/v-deo.html
stupid iphones. great quality phone but advertised to stupid ppl. YES STUPID PPL. Because you only like iphone for it's simple interface. For the same price. You can get a better phone with better graphics, with better cameras. and yes there is a way for android users to use it well now. the app is called filmic pro i think. Works better than regular zhi yun app

I agree with that. Not sure about all the different sizes of connectors, but at least the most popular would do.
This is more useful than official tutorial videos I think.
Thanks Munir!
I need to learn how to set these way points!
Not hard once you get the hang of it.
How can you connect your cable for charging your iphone when your plug is obstruct by the end of your support??
Wow. To be honest, I don't know. This was made 2 years ago and I have since moved on to other stabilizers. Sorry as that doesn't really help you.

Yes. The Smooth 4 would not be my choice in 2020.

@@BasicFilmmaker I am asking, because Mavis Pro is more stable than Filmic Pro and what's more, Mavis do better black in low light than Filmic.
Company Zhiyu said to me, that they are working on implementation with Mavis.
Great!
That was fun. I learned a lot. Thanks!
Thanks Mike! Special showing. :) I haven't released this video yet (shortly), but here's my new favorite: ua-cam.com/video/NY3Ll3mnG04/v-deo.html
Me too, waiting for Android review on this gimbal
Gessh! Has no one done an Android review? I might just have to borrow one if a video doesn’t show up soon.
I bought the smooth 4 and I hope they fix it for Android because a lot of features doesn't work well. For example the motion time lapse. Often I can't watch, what the Gimbal has created with this mode.
I hope sooooe much they fix it, because I love motion time lapse or the vertigo mode...
That sucks. Make sure you let them know. I think it's a problem they are working on.
Thanks for the vid. Any suggestions on a microphone that could be used with this to get better audio?
Thanks for the feedback!
You bet Rae!
Does this stabilizer balance for phones with lens attachments?
I don't know Ensue. I think it will all be about the weight. Might have to try that. Thanks!
If you see Moment videos. They made a video about smooth 4 in which they mentioned that it works with lenses, if you use a moment counterweight, which is fairly cheap. Be sure to check them out ! :-)
I will definitely check it out. Thanks for the heads up!
Great review👍
Thanks Julian!
THIS WAS AWESOME , can u do the same for dslr of the same company?
Hey Naice! Like what? You mean like the Crane for DSLRs? If Zhiyun would send me one, I would certainly do a review.
Basic Filmmaker i hope they will send u one soon 😊
Basic Filmmaker also appriciate the title for every type of shot u were taking truely educational😊
Thanks Naice. Originally I had over 30 minutes of every menu option, but it was wayyyy too long. I thought maybe people could figure it out from the titles, so I am glad that helped.
Hey, I heard this particular gimbal will have a new home soon. I'm sure it will have a good life out here in the wilderness. 🙂🦆
Huh. Heard the same rumor. :)
@@BasicFilmmaker It must be a true story then.
Where do you find USB mini to Lighting
I haven’t found one yet, but I am looking.
Hey Carl, have you found an iPhone charging cable yet? I’ve searched the internet and I’m at a lost. I contacted Zhiyun and they were totally of no help. Before I bought mine I researched the S4 and saw in a UA-cam video that one exists but now I can’t find it.
BigDog_se look on Aliexpress.com
Thanks DB! I found it here: www.aliexpress.com/item/3pcs-Gimbal-Charging-Phone-Cable-for-Lightning-Type-C-Micro-USB-Charge-cable-for-Zhiyun-Smooth/32878179445.html
Nice review. I purchased one to vlog on my Xperia XZ premium.
Awesome! Shoot me a link to something you've shot sometime with it. Love to see it!
Now, this is a steal. 139$ with all those features. No doubt this is a Win-Win deal. Going to add it to my Amazon list. When I win the contest I will order it..LOL
It's a great unit. And good luck!
I was hoping for some inside help, Kevin... LOL
Inside help on the Smooth 4? Sure. Working in it. Inside help on the contest? LOL! I can't see who entered until I draw the 7 names today, and I only get to see the 7 names drawn. Keeps the contest fair so I don't pick my Mom, not that she entered. :)
I had the smooth c. This looks like a solid upgrade, well upgrade to the upgrade I guess.
Yep. I also have an older smooth, but this rocks it by far.
Is it working on phone 6
I don't have an iPhone 6, but from all reports I've seen, it works just fine.
i try shoot video for my son football match.video can last 11.54min.. every time i start video.
Weird. Phone problem?
just go to support ctr. its apps software issue.
OK.
That's pretty impressive for $139.
I think so too. I am definitely going to buy this for those video enthusiasts in my family.
Thanks for your helpful Info
Nice vdo sir
Thanks!
+anupom & bitupon brothers anupom & bitupon brothers Thank you!
I have the smooth 4 as well, i love the gimbal itself, the thing i miss is support for FiLMiC PRO.
And one thing that does not work well with the zy play is the object tracking, so if tracking is needed i would say that dji Osmo mobiles are much better for that :)
I'll have to check it out. Seems to work OK for me.
Awesome channel!! We liked your video and subscribed to your channel! :)
Thanks! Question - is that ROBLOX thumbnail in your description something you add, or UA-cam adds?
5:25 "I've dropped this thing" - you told us earlier you don't drop things lol :)
Yep, true, and that was the joke. NEVER drop stuff, and, then did. What's uncanny, is ever since I said that, I've been dropsy with quite a few items in later videos. Kharam? Murphey?
I just bought it. After watching this video... 🤣🙌🏻❤️
Nice. With a good imagination and some editing, you can do some fantastic things.
Basic Filmmaker yo I'm already into filmmaking...
Was gonna buy a crane or Dji osmo 4k. But then I saw this video. And it saved my budget and did my work. Still soon I'll be buying something for my production camera... Thank-you though
Excellent. You could probably really use it. I watched IN SEARCH OF LOST SOUNDS and it has massive b-roll! Nice job!
Basic Filmmaker Thank-you so much. Much appreciated☺️❤️ currently working on something big. 🎥
Awesome. Let me know when it's posted. Love to see it.
Cool for walking in the street 😜
Or sitting in a chair. :)
You have a point😂
:)
Oh no ! Again an iphone. People say ot doesn't work well with android. You should have tested it with an android ! 😟
The review was good, but this product is not for anyone using an android phone.
Thanks. I've heard the Android doesn't wok well with this, so far the complaint has been no support for 4K. I rarely shoot in 4K anyway. Don't know if there is other problems, and I don't have Android to test it with.
Basic Filmmaker ok ! But make sure to make a bonus video about android with smooth 4 (in case you borrow one from someone).
I will if I ever get my hands on one. I bet I wouldn't even know how to turn the darn thing on. LOL!
I'm holding off on buying until I see an Android review with a S9 or Note 8. I'd be grateful if you could do one.
Mike E Gadget Tech turns out that most gimbals don't work well on Android devices except the dji osmo mobile 2.
Be more careful with the equipment, it is not a good example. It looks like you're scorned the product.
I know the case will handle it, and my viewers often ask about it. Scorned?
Nice video
Thanks Dilip!
Nice information.......
Just subscribed you.......
Thanks!
works only with iphone with all android devices zhiyun has no permission for 60 fps videos
Thanks.
The selfie pole has more class than the loop music and fast forward vision. Delete and move on.
Ah. Another fine UA-cam comment to enhance the world. LOL!
I had a different experience with the Zhiyum Smooth 4 than you Basic. It never worked and support would allow me to return/replace.
It sets in the local land fill now for it's constant software/firmware
errors. I bought a FreeFly Movi two weeks ago and have experienced a gimbal now
that WORKS. This is a poorly executed gimbal. I am
far from the only person with problems.
Well that sucks. I usually try and vet the company before I do ANY review, and they seemed to be good. Although mine worked just fine, I also moved to the MOVI and am pleased as hell with it: ua-cam.com/video/NY3Ll3mnG04/v-deo.html
👍
😀
stupid iphones. great quality phone but advertised to stupid ppl. YES STUPID PPL. Because you only like iphone for it's simple interface. For the same price. You can get a better phone with better graphics, with better cameras. and yes there is a way for android users to use it well now. the app is called filmic pro i think. Works better than regular zhi yun app
LOL! Yep. Filmic Pro is great.
