It is 105 degrees F at noon and we have a DA of 4000 and we are only at 650 msl. No way am I going to dress nice. Wearing my light shorts and a tie shirt. I can deal with the rest.
The Rudder is important. I do not just want to barely pass. I need to know it cold. It's about safety. I will be taking my friends or family. I have to trust my self first. I am a student pilot and I need more practice and want to have it nailed.
What do you think about saying too much trying to impress your DPE getting you into trouble by saying too much vs just answering the questions you are asked? I have heard many people in videos say that trying to elaborate too much for the DPE. Do you think that’s a real thing?
I 100% promise I won't be offering up too much information. That was a trick we always used during oral qualification boards on a ship. Ask an open ended question, and try to get the examinee to dig themselves into a hole.
The DPE at our school comes in shorts and a terrible tie-shirt. PS, you cannot use reference materials in your check-ride. You need to have it all by memory. You cannot even look it up in the FAR-AIM. Of course you need to know the flight rules, VFR rules, airspace and so on. But you also need to know all the other information.
@@BABOp593 That is correct and have to have all the weather legends memorized. His oral is 4 hours long also. However, today, I just received news that he cancelled out on me and that the school is looking for a new DPE. That DPE failed to commit to a date after stating that he would do the check-ride in 3 weeks. He did not stick to his word. Not very fair. Back in line waiting for another DPE. I hope the new one ( one that can do a check-ride ) will be more fair, reasonable and stick to his word. PS, are DPE's like this? I need some help in prepping for a checkride that goes beyond my flight school. The good side is a 4 hour oral and having to have everything memorized is a tall order for me. I can remember a lot of things but I may forget an item or two and need to look it up quickly. PS, I know by memory all of the airspace. VFR min , performance, and other basic and necessary information.
@@BABOp593 Yep, that is correct. The DPE that I was set-up to use does not allow it. Also requires you to have all the weather legends memorized and the oral is 4 hours long. He just cancelled out on my and my flight school is looking for a different DPE. Perhaps this is a good thing and the new DPE will allow me to occasionally look up an answer quickly if I do not know it. I know most of the weather symbols but not all of them, and will be nice to be able to look it up if I do not know.
Nope, YOU CAN NOT LOOK UP INFORMATION. You need to know it all by memory. My FAR-AIM looks like a car ran over it. I have several tabs and can find everything quickly. As far as the left turning tendencies you better know all 4 of them by memory. No looking it up.
This is extremely inaccurate for the majority of DPE's. Nothing says the applicant has to have everything memorized , this is NOT a closed book test. It just sounds like this DPE is trying to keep people from passing, just to collect another fee later on. BTW you are posting comments as if you are teaching people this is the way it is. I can assure you it's not. Go into the ACS for any certificate. There's a checklist for the practical test that includes: Chart supplements, airport diagrams, appropriate publications, current AIM. OK I better stop now before I go looking for this slimeball of a DPE that only has dollar signs in his eyes and make it my life's mission to ruin his checkride hustles.
@@df0813 Also, that DPE stated that he would come out and re-do my test. He strung me and after 1.5 months said he could not come out to complete my check-ride. My School found a different good DPE. I since then passed my check-ride about 1.5 weeks ago. Since studied so hard, I never had to open a book accept for my POH and X-country. Then we went flying and he had me do an emergency landing all the way down to about 60 feet AGL, Yes, I put my flaps in. I nailed it, there was a small dirt road, I was going to have her right on center on that dirt road 60 AGL. He gave me my engine back and I had to climb carefully. Then he diverted me to Flabob KRIR. A tiny runway and a giant hill - terrain is right in the middle of downwind. You have to make a tight base and final. It was in the afternoon and there were winds. I overshoot final a bit but got on center and put her down on the center line on that skinny short field. I did a full stop and taxi back. He asked me to choose a soft or short field takeoff. This DPE was testing me and ADM knowledge. . Well, at this point, It was not about the test, I wanted to make sure I make it out. Short field and I looked for every inch of runway along with an emergency briefing. Then I had to switch frequencies quickly to Riverside to ask for a transition or be prepared to make a quick right to avoid airspace if they did not approve my transition. Whew! I seemed to handle it. I then landed back at my home airport KCNO with a short field landing and nailed it. After the check-ride and passing, the DPE made a comment about the other bad DPE not passing me. He was perplexed on why the other DPE failed me during the oral. There is a history of the other bad DPE simply failing people in the oral after 30 min. and then collecting the money. I was a victim of the bad DPE. You lose some and you win some. Karma will go around for that Bad DPE that is failing most everybody.
Tell you what if ol girl on the right was my DPE when I did my check ride I would have had to request a different one. She was gorgeous. Would have been far to distracting.

Glad we could help! :)
Great way of looking at it. Good advice.
Thanks for watching!

I disagree with going above and beyond on check-ride. You can dig yourself some major holes that the DPE will exploit.
Agree, and they do not care how you dress. It is 95 to 100 degrees out here in Southern California. We have DA at 3000 at sea level.
Is a DPE different from your CFI during your time in their school? It's a completely different person?
Yes. You have to hire the dpe yourself. Your instructor will help you with this, but the dpe will not be associated with your school in any way.
Thanks always great information.
Great video!!
Right right right
