Re: the drinking - I discovered for me that the drinking was less about feeling an effect, and more so about the act of having an adult beverage. Like it was a treat of sorts. If I'm cleaning or decorating, or crafting, it was just an adult thing to do and felt like a reward to me. So now, I'll just put my non-alcoholic bevs in a fancy drinking glass with a garnish. Like last night I just had some ginger ale with a lime ring floating in it, and put it in a cocktail glass and my brain felt like I was getting that "treat/reward." And now I've looked into various mocktail recipes and it's been a lot of fun. So, just a thought for others out there who treated/viewed drinking alcohol the same as I did. 😊🍸🍷🍹🥃
I too didn't drink for the buzz, but I miss the taste. I found decent non-alcoholic beers and gin, but wine... Wine is just irreplaceable (I'm french so that doesn't help). So sad.
@@LucieBoleDuChomont I love wine too, and it's not really a flavor you can mocktail. I recently just discovered, and tried, Fre brand wine (non-alcoholic wine) and I was super impressed and actually enjoy it. Maybe that would work for you?

Note on the fat cells: white fat cells are what makes up the majority of your body. Their function is to store fat molecules and they play a role when it comes to hormone regulation. Brown fat cells have the ability to create heat. they are brown because they contain many mitochondria (you know the powerhouse of the cell?) which in these cells specifically contain a protein that uncouples a process within the process of turning glucose and oxygen into carbon dioxide. This allows these brown fat cells to create heat (which then has an effect on your metabolism). We have the most brown fat cells as babies and lose most of it as we get older. Beige fat is the idea that some of our white fat cells can convert to a hybrid state (through repeated cold exposure) and therefore truly boost your metabolism. I hope someone found that information useful. 😅

Are you sure it's carbon monoxide and not carbon dioxide? I ask because carbon dioxide is what you exhale and carbon monoxide is the result of incomplete combustion and will kill you if you breathe it in.
The advice I would give to any young person on drinking is to never start. You don't need it to socialize. You don't need it to wind down. You don't need it to have fun. You just don't need it. I'm a teetotaler in my 40s because I never started. I had friends in college who drank. I would go to pubs with them and get a non-alcoholic juice drink. I was firm in my no-alcohol stance and my friends respected it. If you refuse to drink and your friends don't respect your choice, then get new friends.

I used to get a 'snowball' or two at Christmas and New Year when i was a wee boy, my Dad used to make a lager shandy for me, and he'd give me a wee sip of his 'Sweetheart Stout', i'm talking when i was 4 or 5. As a result, i grew up with a very different attitude to alcohol than my mates did. When we were 13/14, they were all wanting to sneak away into dark parks and Graveyards and sip on cans of strong lager or vodka and i didn't see the interest in that. In my 20's i went through a phase of getting leathered, first a weekends, then it became an after work thing, eventually it was 4 or 5 nights a week. I was also smoking weed like it was going out of fashion. Come my 30's i was done with that lifestyle. I'd had my fun. In my 40's and i very rarely touch alcohol. I have one or two drinks at Christmas and New Year and that does me.
In short, i wouldn't advise teens to avoid alcohol deliberately. If they don't want to drink, don't, but if they fancy it, then drink it. All i would say to them is, to learn to know your limit, as everyone is different. Just because a mate might take 5 or 6 pints before they start showing signs of inebriation doesn't mean it'll be the same for them. Drink at a pace you're comfortable with, don't rush in order to keep up. Bear in mind it takes an average of 30 minutes for one drink to take effect, so drinking quickly can lead to a right smack in the face as 4 or 5 drinks suddenly and rapidly take effect, that can be exceptionally dangerous.

@@Vivi_9 Ideally, yes. But the problem is that when you first start drinking, you don't know what kind of a drinker you're going to be. I have a friend who never thought he was going to become an alcoholic when he took those first drinks at a comedy club on his 21st birthday. More than 20 years later, drinking still has a hold on him, and he's suffering from neuropathy from his binge-drinking years. If you're a casual drinker who does it in moderation, then that's great! You lucked out. You obviously don't have the psychological or physiological tendencies toward alcoholism. But because there is a very real risk that a person WILL have those tendencies, my advice to everyone is to never start.
There was one point in human history who were drinking alcohol was better than drinking water because filtering water was still difficult. That area passed quite a few 100 years ago.😂

If you live in a country that has all four seasons, cold exposure is just as effective if you stand outside in cold for 3-5 minutes. Just wear something very light, shiver a bit, then go back inside. For my women: always keep your feet warm (urinary issues) but expose arms, face and neck freely

@@TheToeBrand it is somehow connected, it increases the risk of developing or worsening infections, increasing the risk of UTI etc. They used to consider this a midwife's tale, but clinicians today tend to agree that it can negatively impact bladder, and even did a study that strongly suggested this. Many women and myself know first hand that having cold feet for prolonged amount of time screws up our whole urinary tract
Counterpoint / honest question: if being cold helps so much then why do we know scientifically that people struggle so much in winter? Yes, the sun isn't out as much, but it's cold all the time so we're definitely getting enough cold exposure to trigger the epinephrine/norepinephrine release......is sun exposure really that much more powerful of a benefit compared to cold exposure?
In summer I did take those 5 minutes before walking into the office to just stand in the morning sun and it really was fantastic. Now in winter the sun doesn't even rise until after I'm already at work. It's frustrating to want to do the things that help while being prevented by being stuck in a system that doesn't really allow it. Partly because I'm expected to be at my desk but partly because there is no realistic way I could get sunlight within X minutes of being awake if the sun isn't even up yet.
But thank you for sharing these tips, it's wonderful to have them reinforced (even if not always practically attainable).
Not saying this is possible, but could you ask to take a 5 minute break in the mornings? Maybe you could talk to your boss about it and explain that it's for your health. ❤ Sometimes giving a good reason for something to your boss makes them more willing to agree or at least come to a compromise with you. 😄❤

@@desireer6915 Oh sure I could probably ask, it was more about the idea that it's impossible for me to even see the sun within an hour of waking let alone get exposure for 10-20 minutes. Sunrise tomorrow where I am isn't until 3 hours after I've been up, and that's just technical sunrise, that's not when the sun will actually be visible over the mountains and buildings - I'm not even sure what time I'd be aiming for to be outside for 20 (cloudy) minutes under the circumstances. But yes when it is possible it is very much worth it.
You might want to consider getting an SAD (seasonal affective disorder) lamp, also known as a light box - I've found these work well for me when the days are short and the weather overcast. They're very bright lamps that mimic sunlight, around 10,000 lux or 10x brighter than ordinary lamps. Lumie is the best-known brand, and they're not particularly expensive (maybe $60-70 US, though you can pick ones up for $30-40 from cheaper brands).
It actually helped me a LOT to hold off on drinking coffee for the first hour/ 90mins after waking up. This is because your body has to get rid of whatever makes you sleepy and if I drank coffee before, I noticed that I'd be tired all day.
Average cells, (including fat cells,) have 3 mitochondria. Brown fat cells have 8. The largest mass of brown fat can be found on top of the heart and aorta. Brown fat cells heat the blood.

I actually takes ice baths frequently because I bodybuild and can verify that it soothes the body and mind. VERY relaxing
✨️Hey everyone✨️I noticed a lot of "the sun isn't out/it's winter" comments:
There are lamps made to mimic the sun! They are called Light Therapy Lamps. But basically, you just need any type of softened bright light and spend time basking in it for 20-30 minutes, with your eyes open (blink of course lol, and dont look directly into the light) in the morning. And make sure to be 16-24 inches away from the light(s). (Also, designated light therapy lamps will have directions with them for use.)
Light Therapy Lamps can be expensive, but you can probably use other types of bright lights and lamps too. Just be careful and do your research. ❤ AND DON'T FORGET TO STILL USE SUNSCREEN PEOPLE! 😘

I was thinking the SAME thing… I have a job that I have to be up for at 4:30-5:30AM (depending on the day). During those fall/winter months? It’s gonna be IMPOSSIBLE for me to get out into the sun 😭
You just have to get sunlight in the first phase of the day (0-7 hrs after waking up) just better if you can get it in the early morning

Exposure Therapy works. You have to do it over and over again until the fear goes away... and then you have to do it again... and again... and again... and again until you move past it and realize it wasn't so bad and it didn't kill you.

Alcohol in moderation isn't harmful.
1. Interesting additional note about sunlight exposure on top of the all-too-common solution of better sleep
2. I guess I'll have to test my cold tolerance because my ideal room temperature is about 70 degrees Fahrenheit max and I'm so hot-natured I often turn on the AC when I'm in a car even when it's cold outside.
3. My guilty pleasure drinks are soda and tea, so alcohol is not a problem for me. My real enemies are sucralose and whatever materials soda has that increase risk of kidney stones.

id like to thank Anna, and a couple more self-help channels for starting me on finally reading self-help books. im close to 30 (28), so it's probs time i start to get onto the self-help stuff and mending some of my trauma, esp from the last couple of years.... instead if just ignoring it forever.

The primary benefit of alcohol is the socialization that comes along with it, which does have major helath benefits, just dont drink alone, and drink in moderation
I always drink alone simply because it is more relaxing, the secret is don't drink when you're upset because then you use the buzz to numb you and calm you down
there are other ways to socialize, or it doesn't have to be alcohol. nothings stopping anyone to get together over a glass of juice / slice of pie / etc.
The guy i was dating shared all of these tips with me, and i believed him but i shared the same hesitation towards being cold and hearing that there was no benefits to alcohol at all was something i knew but didnt want to hear.

I hated it for the first couple of days but I love it now. I've been having cold showers for nearly 2 months and won't go back on it ever! Everyone around me is getting bugs but not me.

Exactly 😅 and why are people ignoring the fact that warm showers feel like a hug? I find them soothing. What I hate most about the cold is that it makes me tense up instinctively...I suddenly find myself with more neck, shoulder, and back pain once cold weather hits because my body tenses up so much to try to stay warm since I'm a more petite person.
@@xcristinat Right? Plus, warm water also soothes every part of my body. It's like a massage and a hug. Meanwhile, as soon as cold water hits my body, not only does my body tense up but it also forgets to breathe because it's such a shock. And I swear the water isn't even that cold.

Although I have never tried facing the sun ☀️ in the morning, it does seems like a fairly easy adjustment to make, and I will certainly give it a try, however, currently there is not much sun this time of the year in my geographical area, thus, I would be exposed to the cold for the additional time required to get enough exposure to the sun, but I would get the benefit of the cold.
Fortunately, I gave up alcohol years ago, so I already have that checked off.
So I will give these hacks a try soon, and see how that pans out for me.

YAYYYYY!!!!., Anna has validated my COFFEE in the first 5 minutes of consciousness. You go girl!!! Sun in the morning.. Absolutley, preferably on the porch with your cats on your lap. And now that Fall and then Winter is here. . a half hour walk every day is sufficient.. Wear shorts and a long sleeved shirt. . don't forget the hat and sunglasses. And Naps . . .I live for power naps. The cat crawls on my lap, I go ZZZZ. . and life is good.

This is pretty neat. I’ve been doing short cold showers before switching to warm, first thing each morning. And I’ve ever only had a single drink in my entire life. It was a strawberry daiquiri. That was 20+ years ago.

I give myself the cold exposure in the morning around 5:30. And trust me, every morning I ask myself why am i doing this! Also, I've had a very bad sleeping schedule. Used to sleep around 3,4, or 5. But now i WAKE UP at 5, so he is right, sunlight exposure does help. Also, the breathing technique he has given in the pdf is helpful.

When it's cloudy and gray several day during winter, I get more sad looking at it. I turn on a warm light to simulate sunlight, with the curtains open, so that it's not a timeless void after waking up.
The sunlight thing is wild, I just hang out with my dog in the morning

I noticed sunlight is really good for my mood, and it's not hard to just sit on my balcony with a cup of coffee. I don't drink alcohol anymore because ✨ meds✨ and I discovered non-alcoholic gin, which is a godsend because this girl loves her gin and tonic. Guess I just have to get that cold shower thing started (I don't remember what it feels to not be anxious)... yikes.

The coffee thing I heard of a while ago and I thought it would be really hard for me too, but the last job I worked out aloud me to make coffee while I was there. It back surprisingly easy after that. It definitely wasn’t fun the first few days but it was nice once I got over it. Working from home has forced me to build a morning routine that has 90 minutes of activity that doesn’t put me in the kitchen until the 90 minutes is up. I’m also proud to say I don’t even drink coffee every day anymore, just when I get the craving. Maybe if I drank black coffee I’d drink every day but I’m just not a fan of it. Props to those who can and do take their coffee black, y’all are built different.

I've been unknowingly doing these three things for the past years. hmm, who knew?
1. I run during the morning when I don't have work and commute to work facing the sunrise
2. I love ice-cold showers post workout, no DOMS for me and it stops the sweating.
3. I'm allergic to alcohol, so that's an automatic pass for me.

Me: Nice, nice, this advice seems to be great for anxiety. I have been suffereing from anxiety and depression for 7 years, maybe this together with my medication will help. What was it again? Cold showers in the morning? Yeah, depression and anxiety are not THAT bad after all.
