"Buy the car you love" THIS Tom!! People sometimes shop to such a price point that they overlook the emotional aspect of it. All goes well and mostly stays well if you LOVE what you drive. Golden advice and another great video. Thanks!
Off topic comment. Washington's Olympic Peninsula is a fabulous place. Well worth a side trip if you're visiting Seattle. Incredibly rugged country in the interior even today. In fact, it was only in 1890 that non-Native Americans managed to cross it for the first time and that expedition took five months. It would be much the same today. Hurricane Ridge is a 5000 ft climb from Port Angeles on a road that you'll either love or make your passengers put their heads between their knees. (Ask my wife.) The view from the trails at the top are breathtaking. The Hoh rain forest on the west side of the Peninsula is the only temperate rain forest in the continental US. Take your camera. Great greasy spoon restaurants along with a few upscale eateries. (Best breakfast within 500 miles is at the First Street Haven in Port Angeles.) Port Townsend was once destined to be a major seaport until Seattle stole its thunder and its trade. The Victorian homes built by sea captains and lumber barons are gorgeous. And if you make it to Shelton, be sure to see the Shelton "Pig," a large porker monument with the words "County Assessor" printed on the side. Those who hate paying property taxes will love it. Google it for a photo. P.S. And for a side trip from your side trip, take the ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria, BC. It's more British than London.
Tom doesn't have to drive far...they basically came to his neighborhood! Btw the Telluride was a brilliant move for KIA, totally new category for them.
To say trucks, SUVs, and crossovers are popular is an understatement! I almost forgot there are other options out there because of how many of the before mentioned vehicles I see on the road. At least manufactures are providing a big range of different types of these things. Also glad you at least changed your underwear Tom LOL! I do love your videos and the little splash of comedic banter you throw in is icing on the cake.
Holy moly, a good car journalist video! Very nicely done - prep work, personality, editing, a bit of humor, approach, everything. Tom appears to be a true professional in a sea of "me too" jackwagons with a UA-cam account. I'll subscribe!
I love the blue 4Runner TRD PRO model but it is pricey and reviews suggest outdated. Although one could live in it if the seats were placed flat. Where did it place in the standings?

Always enjoy your videos' Tom. I'll bet that by the time 2019 ends the Honda Passport will be at or near the top in sales and satisfaction. I know it isn't immensely exciting being a shortened, lifted Pilot, but it ticks the boxes for a practical, comfortable, reliable people hauler.
The point of the exercise was not determine whether the track was challenging enough to make a vehicle fail; it was to determine the different driving characteristics of vehicles as they completed the off-road section.
Edward Reyez he said only new or revamped cars for this competition - of which the CRV is neither. You need to watch and listen to the video before jumping to such stupid conclusions.
What, no Mitsubishi Montero...oh yeah, nevermind... A Kona; really? Course looks like a normal day in Alaska either just outside Anchorage or Fairbanks.
The dirt road is important because a lot of these cars are resold when it is old and many end up in Africa. There are a lot of bad roads with few miles of better roads in most African countries.
The fact they picked the Forester as a top pick makes me question the entire list. Its underpowered. Not as good offroad as others on the category. The interior and exterior designs are bland...and its lacking in tech. Hell even the sports package is just visual. Ya I dont see anyone picking it over a Rav4 or a Honda Passport.
The RAV4 and Passport were in a different segment, the Mid and Full Sized Family category won by Telluride with 4Runner as the runner up. Not sure RAV is significantly more powerful or any better off road than Forester. Plus the Toyota engine sound is very coarse.
The Forester could use more power but the RAV4 is not that much better. The Forster has slightly greater ground clearance (0.,1") but greater approach and departure angles. While the Subaru has a CVT, (not my first choice in tranny), the eight speed in the Toyota seemed to "hunt" for gears and the engine was noticeably louder under acceleration. After having driven Toyotas for nearly 25 years (including a recent 15 year run in my 4Runner), I thought the RAV4 was uncharacteristically "rough" in comparison. The interior felt no better than the Forester model I compared it either. I was not as impressed as I was hoping to be, especially since this is Toyota's largest volume seller.. Also, a comparably equipped RAV4 costs about $4 - 5K more than the Forester. I have driven them both (Forester Sport vs. RAV4 Adventure) and felt the Forester more capable off-road. Not sure how it compares to the Forester in winter conditions however. This is obviously where Subaru tends to shine. The Passport is in a different (and more costly) category altogether so that is not even a comparison.

The only complaint about Tom's videos, they are not long enough.
I was trying to get to this weeks Game of Thrones.

Where did it place in the standings?
It was runner up in the mid-sized slot after Telluride

The resale value and reliability of it ? Cost of maintenance?
Great work Tom!
Easily the video I wait for each year from you, Tom. Love the rest of your content, but this one video each year aids my sanity above all others.

I don't know the sales numbers. We'll see.
Would really like to see a 5 minute video on each vehicle from this event... get on it Tom...
what about the Pontiac Aztec?
Not significantly changed for 2019. :)
I lol'd at "slow... electric... seat....".
worth it for no other reason than to just say "nuuuWappa " for a few days:)..oh an well done report. cheers Allan
you did the Kona but no Crosstrek !!!!????
If the manufacture chose not to enter it, it was not included. Like I said.
@@DrivenCarReviews Thanks Tom I enjoy your videos.
Your videos are always informative and entertaining.
The Kia telluride is absolutely amazing. Wish they had a Kia Soul there also.
Soul would have been handicapped running with front-wheel drive.
Great competition
It is very very good. The NWAPA people do a very professional job. It's a lot of work to put this on.
A Camry could have done that off-road track !!
The point of the exercise was not determine whether the track was challenging enough to make a vehicle fail; it was to determine the different driving characteristics of vehicles as they completed the off-road section.
Hey I was in Shelton yesterday.
Good Morning, Tom!
Good Morning, Steven!
When it came to judging, it seemed the winners were decisive, not close. (Tell me if I'm incorrect. )
You are incorrect. I was in on the vote tally.
Tom, once I thought about it.. the overall had to be close between the Jeep Gladiator and Kia Telluride.
So the Cx3 fits a skinny 6'6" but can it fit a "big" guy of that height.
Check and let us know, okay?
I guess the Jeep Renegade was invited this year because it got a new engine. A 1.3L turbo. The Fiat 500X gets the same engine too.
Yes and a new front fascia and a few other bits.
So where is the best buy CRV? are'nt they afraid of competition?
Edward Reyez he said only new or revamped cars for this competition - of which the CRV is neither. You need to watch and listen to the video before jumping to such stupid conclusions.
@@Littleathquakes check the title of this video? 2019 SUV and PICKUP of the year! Do you have brain?
@@edreyez484 And it was exactly that. Not the "2019 or previously available SUV and PICKUP of the year."
The new Mercedes SUV looks amazing.
Damn. The Acura was the runner up.
What, no Mitsubishi Montero...oh yeah, nevermind... A Kona; really? Course looks like a normal day in Alaska either just outside Anchorage or Fairbanks.
Who won???
I "loved" my Magnum, oh what a POS it "was".

I'd say the RAV4 Hybrid wins the CUV of the year.
It was not entered. The standard model was.
@@DrivenCarReviews Conspiracy?
@@rightlanehog3151 Ha! How can it be a conspiracy? Toyota was allowed to enter any RAV4 it wanted.
@@DrivenCarReviews I was ironically hinting that Toyota did not want their RAV4 Hybrid to beat their regular RAV4.
Not one will ever see the dirt.lol
What SUV and Pickup was your top 3 of your choices?
Overall, I thought the Telluride was very impressive. After that it was too wide open. Just depends on what you need.
Driven Car Reviews did you like the Tiguan r-line?
thats a pos track wtf my prius can go thru that
