      Hi Briggsy My name is Hakan.I'm from Turkey your chase and I'd love to go fishing with you, but that's not possible because I don't have that much money and airplane tickets and equipment, so I just want you to send me the equipment that I can catch over a pound of fish.

    Very helpful video Briggsy, i caught my first GT back in 2014 but since then i haven't had an opportunity to target them. Love watching all the tackle talk vids, taking it all on board and slowly stocking up on gear to chase these beasts next year.

    A progression of catching small to big fish is a good teacher of technique n understanding of what is needed in a big fish. Nothing beats that first hookup on that big quary that sheds all your fear n seeing to refine the fight along the fight.🙏😛 🎣 great job explaining love your videos from across the pond God bless be safe my friend 🙏

      i live in hawaii, we call them ulua, any gt under 20lb we call them papio. Over here we usually use a dunking rig, huge 14ft poles with baitcasters with shark hooks with octopus/oama/and other small baitfish as bait, but watching mtf for a while i decided to take my 10ft spinner on the rocks with a sick popper, lost my popper to the reef in rough waters, rip 70$ popper.

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  7 років тому +3

      I don't know that rod but on most fish it's prolly totally fine, on a massive one maybe run into trouble but they are rare and I think you'll have a great time GT fishing with that setup.

    Love these tackle-talk vids! I was wondering, in a couple of months I’m going in my first trip chasing GT off the rocks in Tonga. Since I life in Holland I have no one here to teach me haha, could you tell me something about the fight with a GT? Like what to do when you know the fish is going for structure to cut you off and how to adjust the drag during the fight. Keep m coming Briggsy!

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  7 років тому +5

      I set the drag to start with at I think about 12kg - 15kg and crank it up to around 20kg as soon as it hooks up. If they run even on that setting I tighten until the fish slows down and once i'm pumping them and it feels like they can't take any line I loosen off a bit.
      The exception to this is that one fish we saw sitting at the ledge, when I knew there was a chance to hook him I braced myself and tightened up to well over 20kg (could only just turn the spool a few clicks with your hand using all your strength), so because I knew I might hook him I could brace myself and I even had my rod already in the fighting belt when he hit the lure. That kinda thing is very rare though and usually I'm doing what I said first ^.

    • @chiefaltair
      @chiefaltair 7 років тому +1

      Those are some crazy drag settings man haha! really makes you respect GT. You reckon a 5500h expo could do the job on medium sized GT in the 10-20 kg range, or would I really need an 8000h expo? since it will be the first time chasing GT I'm not really targeting tho 50kg+ haha. Thanks for the reply by the way, really appreciate the interaction with the fans from you guys!

      I ordered mine from a place in Singapore called 'anglers hut' it was the cheapest at the time. I think I got mine for about $1000AUD and shipping from Singapore was around $100AUD (I've heard of people getting them for a fair bit cheaper since then, so just dig around see what you can get it for). Really good rod if you can get your hands on one!

    Without going over everything you have already said im looking at rods currently as im heading over to Oman later this year do you feel that this rod will stand up to a 50 plus GT im torn between the rod you have and the 710 ultimo

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  7 років тому

      I donno the 710 Ultimo but I'm pretty sure it will also be rad. The GT82 I have was recommended to me by Mark Harris and I saw Edd from NoBoundaries Oman once say that it is the best GT rod available. He's had a few of them I think so that's pretty much all you need to know! (Edd gets 50kg+ all day long).

    • @markdireen123
      @markdireen123 7 років тому

      Cheers for that Because the dilemma im facing is im torn between what rod to choose im ideally going best/most versatile available the Aswb indian pacific has been recommended the carpenter mh along with fcl labo 81m 81h etc but the u ripplefisher brand is the one that always seems to be at the top of the heap just trying to come to conclusion which model without trying to be a sheep but if its highly recommended by ed and also you along with cavy having yamagas this is pretty much selling me toward this model they are just so bloody hard to get let alone feel

    Awesome advice briggsy. I live in PNG and i'm looking forward to go out and try some of these tips. Our local tackle shop doesn't have much variety when it comes to lures. Pretty much the only poppers they sell are Halco roostas. What's your oppinion of those?

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  5 років тому

      They're plastic but pretty strong, not sure if wire through but if they are you should still land your fish if it's strong wire! Just make sure you upgrade the hooks and split rings if you're going for GT with them!

    Such a useful video, many thanks! When you say the rood cast well 100g lures you mean 100g lure + hooks? Also when you say you would not cast more than a 200g lure you mean 200g total including hooks?

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  7 років тому +1

      85g lure + hooks still casts well for me on this rod and yeah a 170g lure + hooks is prolly the limit (200g-210g total weight I wouldn't want to go over).

    Gt strike poppers on deep water (20m+) or just in shallow water?
    (Sorry my English is bad)

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  6 років тому +2

      Popper is a great way to bring them up from the deep, so yeah they'll hit them in deep just as well as shallow. Best spot to hook up is out wide in the deep water because you can fight them out away from the rocks/reef, but more often than not they'll follow the lure in close and hit you at your feet!

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  6 років тому +1

      Hi Mate I do a 4 wrap uni Knot, most other fishos i've gone with do the same except Milan from BAF who does 6 wraps I'm pretty sure. I use pliers to pull the tag tight and tie it onto a swivel that's on a lure (not just the swivel) so i can hold the lure to pull against the mainline.

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  7 років тому +3

      Hi mate, most the time it's only about 2m long because I don't cast the knot, I think that the FG banging on the guides over time damages it and you'll get more wind knots, also won't cast as far. The other boys cast their knot and have about 3m leaders, doesn't seem to bother them but I'm just weird. Prolly switch to the 3m leader the day I get reefed with the 2m haha.

    Good vid Briggsy, could you please explain moon phases for the pelagics you chase. We know what ur talking about but i'm guessing most viewers like me don't know what to look for in moon phases.

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  7 років тому +1

      For me, it's always either the lead up to new or full with a preference for the new. The big tides = big current which is the direct connection but, there's also something else happening that I don't really understand where right around the new or full the fish just go absolutely mental (not just GT). Had it a few times where they're just 'on' and other than the moon couldn't tell much of a difference to the previous days in terms of water temp, wind direction, time of day etc. it really seemed like they just lost it on the moon! So if you're planning a trip aim for the lead up to full or new and make sure you fish the peak and a day or two after, try both and see what you reckon but I like new a bit more.

    Great update, mate. You've been on a steep learning curve, good to hear what you've learned. You explain it better than Brooksy, and no distractions with "hot chicks" walking past etc.
    Mate, is it possible to pre-order any of the signature lures on the morningtide shop site, for when the next batches arrive?

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  7 років тому

      Hi mate, stoked you dig the film! Pre order not really possible just because if we offered that they prolly all sell before we get them and then have to deal with stuff like we don't get the amount of lures we were expecting because lure builder is flat out and can only do a smaller batch so then people miss out who've already paid etc. But I can tell you there's a lot more to come this year and you'll have more options from different companies.

    Awesome vid as always! Can't wait for the next MTF vid!! Can you tell us more about the moon cycle? Bigger tides = better fishing?

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  7 років тому +1

      For me, it's always either the lead up to new or full with a preference to new.

    • @Briggsy

      Hi Mate, exactly 300m of the Varivas GT MAX. The reel here in this film is a bit low after the last trip (I cut off about 3m of braid each time I retie so that I'm getting rid of the bit where my finger rests on the line when casting (retie at the end of each day and anytime the leader is damage, say by a mackerel. So I lose line pretty quick). Prolly a bit OCD but when the big dog comes I don't want to be able to make any excuses if I lose him!

      Thanks for the reply bro. I got 370m of the 51kg WFT KG strong on my 2016 6500h Catalina. I reckon from what you're getting on the dogfight I might be lucky to get 250m of the GT max on. Keep up the sick work man!

    Brigsy... mate, how does your RF GT82 compare to RF GT80 and or Yamaga Blue Reef 80/8 provided that you have felt them? I am thinking of getting 1 of these. Cheers mate

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  5 років тому

      Hi Mate, haven't felt either of those rods... when I bought the Ripple I went off the advice of Ed from no boundaries and Mark Harris who both recommended the GT82 LC. I have felt a Yamaga Blue Reef Chugger, and i didn't love it, just too much of a broom stick for me. Yamaga rods are high quality sticks for good price though so it'd be good for you to have a feel of that blue reef before committing to the ripple (if you can get ur hands on one)

      Hi Mate, I bought it for $1100 while back but you can get them for more like $900-$1000 now (AUD). Cheapest spot at the time was a place called tackle hut (pretty sure that's the name) in Singapore!

    Question: how do you go with the lighter stick baits on the heavier popping rod? I’ve heard a lot of opinions about needing softer rod tips to get good action but I’m not buying it!

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  5 років тому +1

      It makes a difference but I think if you spend enough time with one stick you get used what you need to do to get a lure working and can adjust your sweeps to make it happen. But a good example of too heavy a rod is, I was throwing a 100g FCL popper on my PE10 stick and it was skipping out of the water with a normal sweep, went down to my PE4 stick which could also throw it (targeting small-medium YellowFin Tuna so didn't need super heavy) and i could wack my sweep/pop nice and hard and the rod was forgiving enough that the lure stopped skipping out. Not a stickbait but if you apply that to a difficult floating stick that needs a gentle touch (and ur a bit rough with your sweeps in general) a softer tip rod prolly helps you out a fair bit with out having to change your natural technique.

    Hey mate, good little vid I got a bit out of that. Couple of q’s for ya - when you say you normally fish with around 20kg of drag, do you set your drag with a scale or just do it by feel? I never know how tight to set mine.. Secondly, have you ever used crimps for your leader to swivel connections instead of knots? Any comments on crimps for GT fishing? Cheers mate keep up the good work! 👍🏻

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  7 років тому +1

      Hi mate, Stoked you got something from it!
      With Drag, in general, I set it to about 10kg-12kg to start, which is just a guess off the feel of comparing that to where the halfway mark is on the reel (feeling where max drag is and working out where half way to that is from zero buy turning the spool with your hand at different settings (or just buy a scale I guess haha)), half way for the doggers should be about 15kg. I set it to about 1/3 max (10kg-12kg) so I don't get pulled off the rocks when they hit, and if im standing in a dodgey spot i'll set it to more like 5kg-7kg. After they hit on the lighter drag I get sorted in a good position and crank it up until they stop running, can still have a few clicks coming out but I want that first run for the reef to pretty much be stopped and drag tight enough that my pumps start bringing him to me not just spinning the reel each lift. I've felt my drag after a fight where i didn't loosen off and it's up around 2/3rds of max (20kg+) few more cranks and the reel is locked.
      (I've heard that dogfights fully locked down can put out way more than 30kg, so my numbers could be higher than I say they are... I think I might get some scales and make a film about setting drag and just see how good I am at guessing the numbers, important part is they stop running and that you don't get pulled in initially)
      The fish that we saw and all cast at I had already set my drag past this ^ fighting point (because I knew I was going to hook him at my feet and there's reef everywhere). In that case where I knew I was going to hook up I set it where you could only just turn a click or two with your hand on the spool using all your strength. But I also locked myself into a good position and fully braced myself/was ready for the hit, rod was even already in the fighting belt when working the lure.
      Don't know much about crimps at all but I all the top GT fishos i've talked to and even kingfish fishos (like Milan from BAF) use the Uni Knot as well, 4-6 wraps I prefer 4 though cus 6 just gets a bit wild to tie!

      Briggsy champion mate, thanks for the detailed response. I’m running a 14k Stella so I guess similar drag if not a little less that your doggy. I’ll have a play around by feel but might get some scales (I need a set for my gamefishing gear anyway). Uni sounds the go, I’ve got a trip to Hinchinbrook in two months and want to make sure I’m locked and loaded for that! There’s a vid on my channel of me getting busted by a GT in Fiji and I’m pretty sure that was a knot failure. Cheers again mate.

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  6 років тому +1

      Don't know about Ripplefisher but Zenaq I think have a really good thing where if u snap ur rod they'll replace it (once) I'm pretty sure. I guess it would be really hard to know if the rod snapped from the fisho highstickin it or casting too heavy a lure etc. so prolly difficult for them to offer lifetime warranty when it'd be real hard to prove how the rod got damaged. I think most rod brands will look after you though if there's a clear defect in their product.

    Brigsy, I know it sort of like how long is a piece of string but what length rod do you recommend.. I'm only looking at 8 foot, 9 foot and 10 foot at max. Truth is I'm getting older and the weight and power needed to draw the lure is getting a tad more difficult than 20 years ago when I actually had muscles LOL.

    • @Briggsy
      @Briggsy  6 років тому

      Depends what you're doing mate but personally I like rods in the 7'9-8'6 range, I find the fight is way nicer, the rods are lighter and lures are easier to work. I have a bad back myself and found that working the same lures on a 9'6 - 10'6 is a lot harder compared to 8'0 range. I think because the tip of the rod is further from you, kinda like lifting a weight that's right under you compared to trying to pick it up with your arms stretched out in front. So I reckon get a shorter stick than usual and see how you go. If all else fails go to the doc and get big TRT haha.

    • @CalaisRider

      Thanks for the advice Briggsy, that makes sense. I was looking at a Zenaq Muthus Accua 100H or HH as an all round option for bait and lures of the stones and breakwalls as I was worried about snagging but then got to thinking how much body and arm work is involved in using bug lures and jigs like you guys do. OceanRidge seem to have some nice rods in that 7 and 8 foot range too. But I'm only going on videos and their home website plus what I find on the net. Thanks again mate.
