  • Heading off to chase GT's and not certain what lure to use in what circumstances? Is it the right time for a popper, a sinking stick bait, a floating stick bait or perhaps a skipping pencil? Here is how we go about choosing what to cast and when. Part 1 of 3 - coming is hook selection and how to work your lure to best effect.

    Gday mate heading to the Phillipines on December just wondering if you got any recommendations on popper and stick baits / colours to use

      Big Contrast is always a reliable start, especially with Poppers. Black with some silver flash, white with flash. Stickbaits a more natural colour profile is a great option 👌

    cheers mate thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and advice on chasing GTs. I've just added my first popper rod to my arsenal, not a big rod but enough to get me started without breaking the bank, its a 80-160gram rod, gotta work out what size reel feels good on it to get the job done. looking forward to your next videos...cheers mate!

    I could use some HELP! I have never salt water fished before, I have no salt tackle at all, so I am an infant here! Going to fish the Christmas Islands south of Hawaii May of 2020. Its known for fly fishing with all the flats but there are small GT's in the lagoon and then on the edge in deeper water. Im trying to figure out my rod and reel choices, heavy for popping and stick baits and a lighter outfit for the flats. I dont own one bait and here in the US, especially the inland states, I have nobody who knows anything about this fishing. I have a 7 day trip and dont know what to bring or how many for the deep on shore fishing and the flats. I realize this is a 2017 post, but I sure hope you check your comment section. Another problem is where to order these lures? Being very expensive in some cases I have to trust a picture so I need a real professional lineup for a first time GT, Wahoo, Tuna, and Bonefish guy on a spinning set up! Thanks.

    Damn if the popper is so big like that, is there a rod that can support that? How many lbs of test would you use? What reel size would you use? Have you loose any expensive lures? How much do you have to spend each when you go on a GT fishing trip?

    • @ebbtidetackle
      @ebbtidetackle  4 роки тому

      Hi man yes specialist casting rods, usually around 8 foot capable of casting 250 grams or so, 100lbs braid to 130lbs, heavy gear!

    How do you feel about lures with a belly swivel vs. fixed hook hangers? And what size barrels do you typically see on those big lures/use on the nose with a split ring? Just liked and subscribed and can't wait to see more content my friend!

    • @ebbtidetackle
      @ebbtidetackle  7 років тому

      Hey Dan thanks for the thumbs up. I am a bit of a fan of fixed hook hangers in smaller lures, and belly swivels in the biggest lure. Usually it will be a 3/0 to 5/0 NT Swivel! More content coming... ;)

    Thanks for your hardwork mate, very much appreciated! May I know if I am fishing in windy and strong current, shall I use a bigger mouth popper or a smaller one? Thanks!

    • @ebbtidetackle
      @ebbtidetackle  6 років тому

      hey Eric, more important than cup size is popper length, long poppers tend to have a better chance of hanging in with waves and chop than shorter ones which tend to get airborne and tumble.

    Hello i know that this video is a few years old now but does the hook colour matter because i have some black nickle vmc treble hooks big ones 6/0 we don't seem to get tin hooks easily in the uk im going to import a few different makes these will be in tin from Europe is it just a longevity thing in the finish

    • @ebbtidetackle
      @ebbtidetackle  Рік тому +1

      Hey Mark! Colour is generally second to strength, and most black nickle finish hooks aren't up to GT fishing.

    Hi mate thanks for the vid great for a begginer like myself, could you recommend a rod for both stick and popper or is this wishful thinking ? I'm for landbased thanks

    • @ebbtidetackle
      @ebbtidetackle  6 років тому +1

      Hi man thanks for the thumbs up. It's tricky but not impossible, just menas that your popper catweight might be a little less than you can with a sticky because you have to have the spine to chug it, if you were using the ASWB IPGT8 for example, I would cast max 130g poppers if they had a decent deep cup, still possible though, would be fine with a 120G Heru Skipjack too which will catch you a lot of GT's off the stones. The longer rod helps get a few extra yards as well. Good luck man and yell out if we can help.

    • @rabbitskinner
      @rabbitskinner 6 років тому +1

      EbbTideTackle thanks mate I appreciate your advice, I might just bite the bullet and buy a purpose popper and separate stickbait rod. Again many thanks.
