  • Having gone through the past week trying to schedule some Indian service and buying a pre-owned Indian from an Indian dealer, I thought I'd share some quick thoughts about the experience.

    Good insight. I Aldo have an Indian SCL. Mine has stage 2 with Lloydz custom tune and a few other things. In sports mode it really rips up the mountain roads I ride in my part of Virginia. Luckily my Indian dealer is about 10 minutes from home, never had any problems with them. I've been riding cruisers for 42 years, and I'm staying with the Indian brand. Ride safe and enjoy the ride.✌️

      Awesome info! I bet that Stage 2 with the custom tune does tear up the rode. Cool! I'm no longer a spring chicken by age but I am a newer rider. Still a lot to experience and learn.

    Might have missed out in the beginning but now you and your wife can enjoy the ride together. That's definitely rare and worth the wait. Now you both get to make up for lost time together. Ride safe!

    This is exactly why I went with Harley over Indian. I wanted an Indian. But, the only dealer I could get to have a reasonable back and forth with me on anything was a dealer that was over an hour's drive away, through some of the most consistently terrible traffic I've ever seen in my life. And even then, he was not giving me as a total noob in motorcycles in general the information I needed. My first bike was a Fatboy, and I've since traded for a Road King. I've got 3 Harley dealers within a half hour's drive of my house, with no interstates, and the closest Indian dealer is a bulk dealer who sells ATVs and Snowmobiles too... Not what I'm looking for tbh.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I contacted Indian about starting my own dealership. I was/am very serious about considering the idea as I could do it--they didn't even respond. Part of me still wants to buy a Harley but that may be down the road. I have loved my two Indians. I just bought a third one (sold the first one as well) but really wish the dealers were better.

    The lack of dealerships is a concern out in the West. The nearest dealer to me is more than 150 miles away, and the one that I like the best is almost 250 miles away.

      I had submitted a thing to Indian about expressing interest in opening a dealership. I received nothing in response. No call. No email. Not a quick conversation even to give me a polite no. Was disappointed in it. Our closest dealer does nothing to generate excite and buzz to come to them. There is one further away (a multi-bran dealer) that is like a constant party of activity. But way too far for me to go on a routine basis.

      Goodness gracious. This is not the way to build up a brand.

    Good commentary of dealerships. Network for parts+service is critical, especially for a niche brand. I bought my neighbors 2002 Honda VTX 1800R for the abundance of the network available. You're a fortunate man to have a reasonable wife regarding motorcycles, some of us catch Hell for it.☹️

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm probably making a mistake by not looking at more third party parts. I tend to buy Indian brand when I can, but there isn't much. I'm trying to slow-walk the purchase of my next bike. I have a used one in mind right now and I'm trying to make the case why it makes sense to purchase. Ha!

    The word is that Harley is going to go straight to consumer soon and if that’s the case, Indian will soon have far more dealers

    • @RamblinManMoto
      @RamblinManMoto  9 місяців тому

      I had not heard that but would find it hard to believe it will happen. The logistics of going straight to consumer would be many, not to mention the likely public relations challenge. Their dealer network is one of their advantages, in my view. I think Indian will add more dealers only as unit sales increase....chicken/egg thing. Well see.

    That's the trouble I'm having is proximity to Indian dealerships here in in my area of VA. I believe I know which dealership your referring to as the standalone Indian dealership. Thats actually the closest one for me ( about an hour and half away), all the rest are in the ballpark of 2 hours. Wish they would open one up closer to my area.

      Yep, I think we're talking about the same one. I am considering a used bike down in Newport News at that dealer. Trying to slow walk it with my wife to convince her why it's a smart purchase. Ha!

    One of the ladies my wife rides with had a scout and it literally broke every time they went on a ride. Every time. And Everytime it would stay at the dealership for weeks of not months. 2 weeks ago she flew halfway across the country to pick up a super Chief. She road all the way back to NC from Indiana with no problems at all. 1 week later she set out on a 5hr ride to the mountains and 2 hrs in it broke down. In 3 years she's put more miles on my wife's Sportster than she has on those two indians

    • @RamblinManMoto

      Thanks for sharing this info. I have to say my Scout and my Super Chief limited have pretty much had zero problems mechanically. The "service" stuff I've been doing are more for the prescribed stuff or changes I wanted to do to the bike. Nothing broken. Interesting she had to fly to buy a Super Chief. In my area I see them often for sale. I've read that the Indians could have issues in particular with the clutch cable breaking but so far I haven't had any issues mechanically like that.

    • @libertyspike8890

      @@RamblinManMoto idk what happened with the chief but the majority of the issues she had with her scout were electronic stuff pertaining to the fuel injection system and sensors. Which just reinforces my decision to never buy fuel injected motorcycles. Over the last 30 or so years I've ridden harleys, Yamahas , Honda's and Suzukis and they were all carbureted. And there's not much that can go wrong with them that I can't fix myself. However, my wife loves those fuel injected bikes and we've spent thousands on service for them.

    • @19Trent69
      @19Trent69 10 місяців тому +1

      @@libertyspike8890 interesting, I've never heard of such a bad review as you mentioned... and for servicing, I've had 16 fuel injected bikes(14 Harleys) and serviced every one of them myself.. saved 10s of thousands $$
      Maybe learn to service them and save $$ haha
      I'm onto my second Indian Motorcycle, and won't go back to a Harley again.

    • @libertyspike8890
      @libertyspike8890 10 місяців тому +2

      @@19Trent69 idk. Maybe she's just having really bad luck with them but I ain't taken that chance. I don't plan on buying any new motorcycles anytime soon . I've never owned any fuel injected bikes. All I know personally is old Japanese bikes and evo harleys and my experience with those has been pretty much as long as you keep riding them they are pretty easy to maintain. Where you run into trouble is when you stop riding and let them sit. That's when they get expensive.

    I’ve had the ftr r carbon and the scout rogue.
    Great bikes. Loved them but then I found the triumph tiger low. This has been the bike I’ve waited for.
    I’ve had 5 Harley’s the best was pan am while riding but was way too tall for me and the low rider s is a beast.
    I honestly went to Indian because Harley’s were marking everything up. I don’t and won’t pay mark ups.

    Your dealership experience didn't sound great. My dealership here in Michigan is awesome. The Harley dealership that is located across the street from my Indian dealership has a terrible reputation. So in my opinion, it isn't they type of motorcycle you buy, but the management of the business that is the problem.

    • @RamblinManMoto
      @RamblinManMoto  9 місяців тому

      I guess the thing with Harley is that there are multiple dealers in our area so if you don't like one it's not too far to another. Just because they have so many. With Indian, if you don't like your local dealer, you are SOL because it may take an additional hour or more to get to the next dealer. This is driven by Indian having such a limited dealer network. I actually bought my first Indian from a dealer further away than my closest because of their great approach to me as a newbie, but it's impractical to go all the way there each time I need something. Bummer.

      How long have you been riding? My first bike was a Scout. I sold it after roughly 9 months to move on to the Super Chief. If you are a newer rider, maybe go the Scout route, but overall I think even a newer rider would be good on the Chief. Maybe keep it in Standard or Touring mode as Sport is very jumpy. I liked the Scout for sure but really like the Super Chief.
