  • I know you’ve all heard me talk about “hot mud” so let’s take a look at what it is! USG Sheetrock® Brand Easy Sand™ Joint Compound comes in set times as low as 5 minutes and as high as 210 minutes. It helps prevent cracks, works great for filling large gaps and what we prefill with. We always have a bag on hand!

    Great quickie intro. Imho anybody who isn't using hot mud for gap filling & tape bedding is nuts and a) asking for cracks & call backs, & b) making work for themselves by mudding the time shortcut possible w/setting type compound.

    Great tips! Was in a home Depot a few months ago. A homeowner was going to purchase 15 minute. I talked him into getting something with more work time and explained what the numbers mean. Heck, I can't even use 15 minute, it's set before I get it mixed. Lol

    Also, important to mention is that you can only change muds moving higher in drying time. For example you can pre-fill with 5, then complete your patch with 20, but not the other way around. At least this is what I was taught.

      Even if the previous layer is fully dried and cured?

    • @johnp4871
      @johnp4871 Рік тому

      @@jeremyspecce I'm still learning but I think he's right. The other day I was doing punch-out work and I had a lot to do so I started of with easysand 45. I went back after it had SET (in contrast to dry) and skimmed with proform 5 minute. It was a mess even after the 5 minute had set and dried. I had to leaved it to fully dry (referring to fill coat underneath) and then skim over again with 5 minute. Note I did use 2 different brands: easysand from usg for 45 and proform for the 5 minute. That could be part of it. And also it could be since I didn't actually let the 45 dry, it had only set. Really though you should be able to skim even after it has only set, so I'm definitely not doing that again as I wasted a ton of time.

    Been mudding for 7 months and virtually all I use is 5 min. 95% of the time doing small up to 3 ft wide repairs even. Wish I was afforded enough time to use 20 min, the stress of mixing 5 min and getting it on the wall makes work a bit frustrating sometimes. We'll take a hair drier to the patch after each coat just enough time to have it set but not fully dry and then apply another coat. Can have 3 coats on a medium size patch in an hour this way.

    I always sprinkle the powder into the water, not the other way around. Less clumps and easier to mix that way.

    I am trying to fill an area that is half inch thick with 20 minute mud. I was layering it. Am I supposed to wait until the mud is hard as a rock and totally dry or just wait for it to set and then it can still be moist before adding another layer?

    • @DrywallShorty
      @DrywallShorty  Рік тому +1

      When using easy sand I test it with my finger. If it's hard but still looks "wet" I will coat over it. If it's soft and I can push it in I will wait until it's set.

      After I apply the 20 minutes hot mud, I wait 30 minutes and then use a heat gun or hair drier to finish drying, then apply second coat and repeat, then to finish and 3rd coat I use multi purpose ready mixed compound and wait around 6 hours and then heat gun as well if need to finish in 1 day or wait overnight to dry before sanding.

      😂 it’s nicknamed hot mud because once the chemical reaction starts it gets a little warm

    • @douglasd327
      @douglasd327 2 роки тому

      @@DrywallShorty ain't that what the volcano does? It warms the mud too. Not like pyroclastic flow scald you're skin off type hot, but just warm enough for a therapeutic relaxation technique.

    I hate this stuff. Only because it doesn’t sand east. Idc if it says easy sand. Ain’t nothing like sanding the real stuff.
    But a good tip here: buy a cheap handheld cake mixer from Walmart. They work really good to mix mud in a pan. The better you mix it. The closer you have to the number on the bag to use it. Mixing with a knife is slower so it reduces your work time. And doesn’t mix it quite as good. Gotta get this stuff mixed really good so it doesn’t have clumps and little bits in it.
