Am I even remotely interested in owning a mini donut maker? No but if James is reviewing it, I'm watching it! He's such a thorough reviewer, it's obvious he takes his job seriously and puts in the effort.
Totally agree!
These are chocolate so it difficult to see the colour outcome
They sell box mix for mini donuts with frosting. That’s what I usually use with mine. You should do their pie and or Bundt makers. They have a new rapid cold brew machine too
Its cute and the novelty factor makes it a big hit with kids I’m sure. But ultimately it’s a donut shaped cake? LOL.
Exactly… it’s cake
Well they’re baked not fried.
and that's why some people prefer fried vs baked donuts
Yeah might as well just make a bundt cake, or a sheet cake, it's easier, and you don't have to buy the donut maker.
Donuts come in two different varieties: cake donuts or yeasted donuts. Cake donuts are what they sound like - basically cake batter (baking soda leavening) that’s deep fried. Yeasted donuts (yeast leavening) are made with a dough, not a batter, then deep fried. So commenting that they’re “donut shaped cakes”…that’s basically what cake donuts are. These, however, aren’t deep fried.
I have been watching James's videos for around 4 years or so. I've never bought an Item he has reviewed. I just think he is really good at what he does. I'm not sure why I just enjoy watching all the ways he test products. I think he is the best at it. When I see other creators half ass a review of a product he has already reviewed it annoys me. They are doing their own viewers a disservice IMO.
I do recommend things he's reviewed to friends if they are looking for something I know he has reviewed and recommended.
Ditto
Yep, he actually reads the instructions! I like that he follows the directions first, then tweaks things to try and improve the outcome.
Yes same here, I find his videos very enjoyable
There was one thing I wanted to buy but could not find the original one, only cheap copies
I love the way he doesn't take sponsorships to review stuff. He always buys everything with his own money and gives totally unbiased opinions as someone who actually spent their own money on the product he reviews. He also gives everything a good fair go, even complete garbage, he'll spend more time than I would trying to get it to do as advertised.
Another one of them kitchen gadgets you’ll have fun using once then it’ll end up at the back of the cupboard with the 17yr old basil 🌿
Yep, might as well just make a bundt cake, or a sheet cake it's much easier, and no wasteful gadget taking up space.
I use mine a couple times a week. It works great
@@kurtdrexler9888 does it taste like a regular donut? I heard an airfryer also works well if not better
And next to my cotton candy machine and ice cream churner😂
@@CommodoreFan64folliw alton brown. No single use equipment allowed in the kitchen
I love the Dash line, been a fan since they came out with that little egg cooker.
Like all the dash lineup, they are difficult to clean. Thats why I went with a proper waffle maker with removable plates in to make chaffles in after using a dash. I keep all my dash products now for sweet treats where flavour crossover wont be an issue.
Thank you for making these videos as they help me find the right products I need!
Long time ago, used to make donuts by frying up Pillsbury biscuits.
Donuts are fried, this makes cake in the shape of donuts. Not that it's bad but they are not donuts
Agree 100%!
Forgot to add that I really prefer the fried glazed raised kind of donut but these cake ones looked pretty tasty. I have this machine although I haven’t used it yet - being basically, lazy, I’d use a cake mix - lots,of,different flavors to choose from. Didn’t think about how to fill but I can see that the squeeze bottle is what I need. My only slightly negative is that I’ve been told for years never to use a spray on non-stick surfaces as it eventually will damage the coating. There are some really nice spray oils that work beautifully instead if those aerosols. This caveat is also for Teflon, etc. pans - the aerosols will ruin the surface.
You’re correct, spray oils become baked onto the metal and actually destroy the non-stick effect. The instructions for air fryers tell you the same thing. Spray the food not the basket.
Love mine, just tried it for the first time last week! Went with pancake mix and the kids loved them.
I was thinking mix sweetend pancaje flour and cake mix shook together and big spraybottle with oil on mist
If you have trouble cleaning something like that you probably aren't cleaning with bottle brushes, the superior dish cleaning tool
Back in the day, I'd go out to my brothers place on my "Friday" after work. I'd usually hit up Albertsons and just do a quick browse for clearance meats and some treats for later.
We'd get a nice campfire going, toss back a few beers, throw on some music and cook some food.
Usually it was something over the fire, but often, as the night progressed and we became more inebriated, we'd fire up the deep fryer and experiment with the random food I brought over.
Turns out, the cheap cans biscuit dough make a really good "Gem" doughnut. Just press a hole into the dough and shape it just a little, fry it up for a couple minutes and eat as-is, or throw some powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar on it. One of the various "stupid" things we stumbled across on our weekly hangout.
With that said, I wonder how well the cheap can of biscuits would work with this mini donut maker.
Love the review vids, always looking forward to the next one.
Love your reviews!
Those looked pretty nice with the icing!!
A new FREAKIN’ review let’s goooooo !!! I’m hyped haha, I love these vids so much.
Another awesome review my man ! Cheers from your biggest fan in Colombia amigo!
Your review sold me, definitely going to get one. I gave up donuts because they are fried and have too much sugar. Cake donuts were my favorite so I see a lot of possibilities with this. I'm looking forward to making a healthier version of my favorite donuts.
Am I the only one thinking that this isnt doughnuts? Its round cake. Its gonna taste fine, because cake is good lol
Sweet, I always wondered if these were any good. Looking forward to this review 😁👍
So people type a comment before watching the review ?
I have the Dash egg cooker and rice cooker in that color and I LOVE them! I may have to try this donut maker now ;)
A thing that can make donuts in minutes? Well, purchasing this one probably would be a death sentence for me😅🤫
I got this as a gift (wouldn't have paid for something like this). The first recipe I tried was the banana donuts they gave in their booklet. I used more banana and less brown sugar than was mentioned in there and it turned out moist and everyone who ate pretty much liked it. Never tried any other recipes. 28 mini donuts was enough for my family.
I bet muffin batter would work too.
I have one. And I use a squeeze bottle to put the right amount of batter in it. Then I put them in baggies and place them in the freezer. When I need them I take them out and pop them in the toaster.
My mom's side of the family used to have honest-to-gd family reunions that we went to when I was very young. The main reason they stuck in my mind was because the entire time was spent making homemade donuts! I couldn't tell you much about the process - I think they were cake donuts (I believe I remember using cookie-cutter type molds?), and I'm pretty sure it required dropping dough into hot oil. Good if fuzzy memories, but very different than this griddle thing. (I would have been baffled if you said they actually tasted like donuts rather than waffles!) I do feel like I remember the dough being thick, but again, I'm pretty sure it was cake donut batter.
first thing that popped in my head....why the hell do you need to flip them when it's supposed to cook top and bottom at the same time? WTH?
When you put the big one and the small one together it gave me Batteries Not Included vibes.
I thought I was the only person who knew (and loved) that movie!
Best comment!! Love that movie!
You didn't make donuts the second batch, you made cake 😂
I mean...there is a definite distance between doughnuts and cake batter.
Great review James!
wow, if I had this as a teen i could totally see myself making some batches every once in a while and sell them on the sidewalk to try to raise some extra dough
xtra doh
Long time watcher, first time commenting. Thank you for all your awesome videos. I wonder why something that cooks much like a waffle would need to be flipped. Do you flip a waffle when making it? Probably not because it cooks on both sides in that device, so what's with the need to flip? LOL
Not exactly. Of the 3 different waffle makers I've owned, it was always helpful/best to flip the waffles. Also notice that there's even waffle makers that have a flipping mechanism so you don't have to touch the waffles to flip. I've seen them used in restaurants too.
I don't know how they could taste like anything except a mini piece of cake.
That's what I was thinking. Why not just make a cake 🤷♀️
@@munkustrap2 I thought the same thing but then I remembered that 2 weeks ago I had to throw away half of a 9x13 inch cake away because it was too much for us two. Now unless I know grandkids are coming over there will be no more cake baking here.
Lol many here love it. I was thinking about it but ya know-my counters and cabinets have no more room if I buy every little gadget. Cake donuts rock! Your own recipe and perfecting it is appealing. I’m thinking about families as you’ll be STANDING there making enough!!! As a two person family even 6 isn’t enough lmao! I do chocolate-don’t blink-‘gone in 20 seconds’! I’ll consider it, maybe. Thanks for the review. Oh and question, I was considering the mini waffle maker-does it cook/brown evenly or is it splotchy??? Thanks🙏🏻❤️
Mmmm doughnuts (drooling sounds) 🤤 😆 I personally gave up sweets long ago, but I do miss them... especially with sprinkles 😄
1 Million This YEAR! LETS GOOO
Your last donuts are actually just called "cake donuts".
I have the Dash egg cooker, and it works great for poaching, omelet or boiling several at a time.
Doughnuts are supposed to be fried. These are just doughnut-shaped cakes.
A fun part to add to your channel perhaps is when you’re wrapping up reviewing the product. You should add a segment of what you recommend the company should look into about their product based on your findings. That would be cool.
James The Donut Chef
I got the Dash maker for flat Scandinavian type cookies. I used an AllRecipes recipe and it was great. But my tip is not to use that spray. Get coconut oil, and a BBQ brush, and lightly brush the oil on. It tastes better as well as prevents sticking. No issues at all.
Krispy Kreme doughnuts can be pricey this could definitely save money on doughnuts.
Dash Pie Maker next, please. I have one and just wondered what you'd think of it. I also make mini-omelets and biscuits with it as well.
I've had this unit for over a year now and love it. I make the vegan ones as I can't have dairy or eggs and find they turn out good every time. The thing I don't like is that you have to turn them over... Why not just have a heating element in the top as well so you don't have to turn them over. Otherwise, a wonderful little machine!
As a vegan you wouldn't be able to eat any flour related items due to bug parts. How do you make your donuts?
@@BallisticTip I'm not vegan, I just can't eat eggs or poultry products or dairy as my gut is intolerant to them.
Will you share the recipe you use?
@@BallisticTip what do you use for flour?
@@mr.c6674 Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2/3 cup almond or soy milk
2 tbsp apple sauce
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 tbsp vegan margarine, melted
Directions:
1. Mix together flour, baking powder, sugar in a medium bowl
2. Whisk together almond or soy milk, apple sauce, vanilla, and melted margarine in a separate bowl. Add the dry ingredients, mixing until well combined.
3. Scoop batter into 1-gallon plastic bag and seal partway. Snip off 1/8" from corner of bag. Add batter to donut molds until about 3/4 full.
4. Bake for 1.5 minutes. Using a toothpick, flip donuts and bake for another 4 minutes.
The Dash mini waffle maker is grest. I bake double batches and freeze, use as needed. They are low enough wattage to operate on a solar generator. They are neat
Hello from VA.....Love your videos
Your videos are very therapeutic.
I don't know how recent this is, but it is nice that you are now using the default stop watch without an add on it!
Super impressed how you sre able to take a simple gadget and make a whole video! Nice
In Homers voice, mmm… donuts!
Neat little griddle, though I prefer deep fried yeast donuts. I would love to try my racuchy batter recipe in this. It would take it to another level and more like real donuts. (Polish yeast pancakes)
Too much trouble for a donut. I buy Little Debbie mini donuts in a bag at the grocery store. 🍩 😋
If I’m not mistaken, they make an amazing egg cooker
I have Many of these Dash product, Waffle maker sticks, waffle with skull design and their sandwich one. I use the sandwich one to also make triangular muffins. thinner batters do work with this and the non stick is great i dont even have to butter it.
I have seen this and have really been waiting for you to give feedback on your experience with it!
Can you only make the cake donuts in these? The bread dough donuts are the ones I like.
I have the dash waffle maker and I LOVED IT it worked so well!! I have been wanting the dash donut maker
I thought I was the only one with a mandelbrot set picture on my wall, I also have a Lichtenberg figures pic too lol
That be cool! To make my own gluten free donuts for less $$$ compared to premade ones. Thanks!!
I wonder how the doughnuts pan for oven would work with the recipe you try or in the recipe booklet. 🤔
both top & bottom should heat up so no flipping should be needed
Use half chocolate and half lemon or other flavor cake mix for some interesting donuts.
No, I don't have one of those contraptions but if I did, I would definitely try swirling flavors.
reminds me of the 1980's girl toy the easy bake oven
Dash *Donut-shaped waffle/cake maker
- Relatively large, single-purpose appliance
- No better/easier than buying mini-donuts from the store
- Difficult to clean
Thanks for taking another bullet for us lol
hey.another good vid.never seen or heard of this product before.
Complaining that mini doughnuts are too small makes me think that person never had mini doughnuts before.
Just use an air fryer, not only does it make great donuts, mini and full size, but it also does a lot of other things great as well.
What kind of pan do you use?
Not the same. Air fryers are loud and do not bake that well.
Kind of annoying that you have to flip them, right? Does the top half of the donut maker have its own heating element? Or is that just for shaping the donut when the batter rises during the cooking process.
These reviews are so helpful, definitely something I'd considered buying but after watching this review I would rather fry them normally any day over using the Dash Mini Donut Maker.
Thanks for a fun review. One question though: why wouldn’t feed the first batch to your kids, James? Kids eat bugs and boogers. I suspect the first batch would be a step up. 😂
I have a couple of dash appliances. I can't imagine holding them under the faucet. Just take a wet paper towel and wipe it out. Easy.
Will you review the Breville Smart oven pro air fryer please?! It came out a little bit ago but would still love to see your review on it!
A surprising number of Amazon customers are incapable of thinking.
Wondering how this (or the mini cake pop maker) would do with brownie mix? 😋
It's weird you have to flip them considering it's a double-sided cooking surface. That already seems suspicious to me.
Donuts are deep fried batter, so they’re never going to taste like donuts
I wait weekly for new episodes of; The last of us, MrBallen, and Freaking Reviews.
I’ve used one of these to make donut shaped meatballs. You’re really only limited by your imagination with these little kitchen gadgets.
Although I will say I wish they’d be made with easy cleaning in mind. You can’t submerge any of these little things and they’re all a pain to clean.
I had this and the cake pop one but lost them in a move sadly
I really liked the cake pop one lol
Hahaha
I thought the Dash Mini Donut maker was for the dash of the car.
Like a solar thing so you'd have warm donuts after work or something.
LOL 🤪
I don’t have the dash mini donut maker, but I do have a different brand that has interchangeable plates, one for muffins and one for cake balls, as well as the donut maker and I like mine! I make egg bites with it! On a funny note: As I started watching this review, thought boy is he slurring his words? My first thought was I hope he is ok, my second though did he have a couple drinks and then I had slap my head moment….I had slowed the playback speed for a different video omg! All I could do was laugh at myself! Thankfully you are ok! I am the problem! 😂😂😂😂
Thanks!
Donuts just have to be deep-fried.
My aunt has it which is pretty good, I do enjoy a fry donuts so delicious lol.
They look bigger than the Hostess donettes, dont know why some complained
Totally agree!
donuts should be deep fried
I would love to see you do a podcast with cold ones
Hey, I was just about to say why not use a plastic squeeze bottle and you did 😁
grate minds think alike
There's only 1 way to make good doughnuts....fry them
i used pancake mix in mine and had some of the best pancakes i ever had!!
I have a mini donut maker. I love it.
Like the Ronco doughnuts machine both designed for cake doughnuts and we like yeast doughnuts.
A thing about appliances like this if it's got a top heated lid you would think you wouldn't have to turn it over and that kind of the whole idea isn't it? 🤔 ....
This would be great for ppl watching what they eat. You could substitute ingredients to lower fat and sugar. Also I want a donut now lol
🍩
If you're watching what you eat, don't eat donuts 😂🐷🐷
@@youarehere0 People trying to watch what they eat fail far more by taking an extreme stance than they do a moderate stance - watch what you eat shouldn’t mean cut out all treats, it should mean make sure you get all your macro and micro nutrients within your calories and if you have a enough left for a mini doughnut, don’t deny it to yourself, enjoy it!
They need recipes that only make enough batter for 7 donuts.
@@recoveringsoul755 True!!
I wasn’t in the market for a donut maker, but if I ever am, it won’t be this one. Thanks!
@Freakin' Reviews
You mentioned that the donut maker has a nonstick surface.
Is the interior ceramic or Teflon coated?
Ceramic is the best IMO as Teflon is so carcinogenic ...and it leeches into the food.
They are waffles with holes . Real donuts are yeast raised. And fried . And glazed.
Good job Dad!!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻♥️
