I bought those silicone lids for making rice because my pot lids are too loose, and I kept losing water to evaporation and my rice turned out hard. They work great for that! One thing to watch out for: They really do insulate well. I put some warm gravy in the fridge covered by one, and it was still quite warm the next morning. That’s just asking for food poisoning. So, if you’re going to use it for storing hot liquids, maybe chill a bit before adding the lid.
But don't you have to have steam vents when you cook or heat something in the microwave? I half expected that bowl of soup to explode. Where does the steam go? Also, that lift-by-the-top is just an accident waiting to happen, a bad one.
@@ferociousgumby if you have an hour, I'll explain the simple physics to you, but just know, pressure can escape that bowl just fine. Those same physics is why I also wouldn't trust carrying it by the lid while it's hot.
@@FrugalGal It's an explosion of steam and splattered boiling food right in your face, just waiting to happen. Microwaved food HAS to be vented. This is why eggs explode.
I have some silicon lids (gray) and they're super useful! You can definitely use them for food on a plate, you just set the biggest lid right on top of the food and reheat it. The "seal" not required to keep the food from splattering. :) Only disadvantage in the fridge is if the edge of the lid is bumped when you're rummaging around to get something, it'll come right off no matter how well it's sealed.
Lol, I totally agree! I got so frustrated, I gave up and went back to lids, plates, saucers, and Tupperware. The only time I use it in the fridge is when it barely fits inside the bowl. It still seals but can't be bumped off. Another negative is if there is any food on the rim of the bowl, you can't get a vaccum seal.
I bought one of those silicon lids instead of a glass lid for a frying pan. There exist sets that are made in such a way that the center parts are identical so you can stack them and they remain basically flat. I store mine on a hook, using the little hole on the side.
I have a different brand of the egg separator but it's pretty much the same thing. I use mine a lot. I like my egg whites practically burned but my yokes very runny so I separate the yokes, cook the whites, and add the yoke at the end of cooking. Work great!🍳😊
Handy bonus feature of the any-tongs is if you put two spoons in it upside down, so the bowls contact each other they become a musical instrument. We need a test of this hidden feature.
Mom puts the small silicone lids over my tea cup when I'm only making one cup at a time "to stop the cats from getting in it". Unsure of how practical that is because the cats don't seem to get in it without the lids either.
I have been using a set of silicone lids much like these for years. They are one of the most useful things in the kitchen. I use them in the microwave a lot. They are also good to cover those bowls that are still good but have somehow lost their lids. The smallest one is just right to keep my morning tea hot wile it brews.
I think he likes to review kitchen gadgets since there are a lot to choose from, but also, all these kitchen gadgets are relatively cheap. Not a big loss even if the gadget does not work.
We have the fancier version of those silicone lids. We got them when they first came out. They are very handy and do work very well for microwaving food. I have used them in all types of situations for reheating food. They keep splatters and steam inside the container, for sure. I do NOT trust the suction function and lifting a hot bowl of soup or something with them! I tested that out and got mixed results. The best thing is to be safe and NOT do that or you could get hurt.
With the any tongs, turn one of them upside down so they face the same way, they would tessellate for better function. I don’t have them but it makes sense to me. And the egg sucker has been around for decades and you can get little ones in funny shapes, I used to have one the shape of a fish, lost it and got one the shape of a cactus. I lost that one in a house move a decade ago. They cost me about £1 each as novelties here in the UK. You can do the same thing with a plastic soda bottle. Or you can just pick the yolks out of the bowl with your fingers, which is quicker and easier.
We have a set of the silicone lids and I love them. Ours have a different knob in the center and seem to be a bit more substantial than the ones you have here. I use them for heating bowls of food in the microwave, (steam makes it very unwise to lift by the cover), refrigerating foods in containers that don't have covers of their own, and temporary covers for things like picnics or leaving them sitting on the counter for longer than you'd like to have them uncovered. They only get used a couple of times a month but, man, are they handy when needed. Great substitutes for all that plastic wrap.
1. It would be interesting to compare the egg separator against a cheap used plastic water bottle. 2. I wonder if the tongs work better by using knives instead of forks or spoons? 3. I suspect the "seal" on those lids is only there when lifting the lid up, otherwise when it's resting there could easily be gaps around the edge. Good for heating something up or as a temporary cover, but maybe not for storing in the fridge for more than a day.
I was taught to use the shell. You "pour" the yolk from one side to the other, letting the white overflow on the sides. The shell will eventually cut off the last remaining white from the yolk, and you're done. No fuss, no waste, no breaking yolk into white. Perfect eco.
I have the Anytongs, which I got when they were going through Kickstarter. I had the same issues you did. They tend to slip out/loosen out of place in the holders, and they don't meet up with their opposing partner if the utensils are not identical and sturdily in position. I think I tried using them two or three times, then went back to regular tongs.
My perception before the review was poor on these items. Now I am very impressed with the egg separator and the bowl covers. You might be an unintentional spokesman for Amazon's weird products. I might actually buy these. as for the anytongs, they are exactly what I thought before the review, not useful for me. I have perfectly good tongs that are less expensive than this thing and they work much better.
I have a set of the small silicone lids to keep bugs from landing on drinkware outside. They work fine for that purpose. The tongs don't seem that useful because you have to have flatware that fits those slats without moving around. I prefer regular tongs and mini tongs.
I think the anytongs might work for a very small studio apartment with limited space. If you've seen some of those tiny NYC apartments that aren't much bigger than some walk-in closets, space is always a premium. I don't think they will be good for people with decent kitchen space, but I think they might work for people in the right situation.
Kinda crazy, the thing I expected the least from is the one I might actually look into picking up. I didnt expect much from the lids, but based on how you showed how they work, seems very useful. I guess thats the point of these reviews, to see this stuff in action. Thanks!
The further down you can push it, the lower the pressure will be inside. If you can squeeze out most of the air, these things will lift enough weight to where the silicone tears. You have to remember the air outside is exerting 14.7 pounds of force per inch square.
Tons of ways to separate eggs but I have used the bottle, made a video about it like 3 years ago which does exactly as the tool you purchased, I prefer using my hands. The any tongs I find kinda cool and might have to get a pair of some.
Really enjoy your videos. Even if I am not interested in what you are reviewing I still enjoy watching. And I have bought several things based on your tests.
Those lids have intrigued me for a while, but I wouldn't think they would hold vacuum pressure long with liquids in them (especially hot liquids since they create gas more readily); therefore, I would always press the top down before using them to lift something to increase the vacuum to maximum.
I don't know what it is, but your videos are so calming. I could watch you talk about paint drying and be fascinated tbh. I love that you don't do the craziness that a lot of youtubers do with the click bait and not talking like real people (hope that makes sense 🤣.) Thank you for all of your wonderful content!
Great video once again, James, Mr. Awesome Product Review! (my favorite UA-camr, by the way!). I agree with you, I actually like the little yolk sucker thinghy! (I have never even seen one before today! & I might just get myself one! 😺 And, I really like those silicone bowl/lid covers (I have a giant box of saran wrap I bought at Costco, I literally use every single day, multiple times! & these silicone lids would definitely help save on my use of saran wrap). However, like most people have stated they come with too many small sizes! (From a company's stand point, though it's actually pretty smart, because people will buy more.... In order to get more of the large size lids so, as consumer's we complain, but from a business perspective, it's actually pretty smart! (I'm going to get myself some!) 😻 And, those tongs.... If you can use the silicone lids while cooking, the larger 2 would be perfect for me. I've got 2 lids for my pots and pans. The pan lid is too large for smaller pans, and if I want to use more than one sauce pot at a time, I'm short a lid. These would be much cheaper to buy and find, than regular lids. Take up less space too. I think the egg separator thing is a waste of money and space. You can just use half the shell to catch the yolk. The tongs had my interest until your demo. Thanks.
I was ready for the Anytongs to be useless, but I'm sold! They seem to be a great way to not have to buy multiple tongs for when you need to use more than one for whatever reason. Sure, it technically makes more dishes because you have to dirty 2 or more pieces of silverware, but I think that outweighs the space that multiple tongs takes up In fact, you don't even make that much more dishes out of it. It's either 1 dirty pair of tongs, or 2 dirty spoons or forks, per Anytong. That isn't a significant different. I might actually buy them after seeing this review.
The seal is formed by vacuum pressure. But as you heat the container, the pressure under the lid rises, which means that there's no more pressure difference. So no more seal.
I have a small silicone lid that I use to to keep a (red solo) cup of snacks (like pretzel nuggets or Cheetos) fresh. It works great! I would like to have the larger sized lids for bowls - like your salad. I went searching Amazon but could find only sets that contained too many small lids. I was intrigues with the stretchable silicone lids that showed up on my search. Could you maybe test these out? I'm somewhat doubtful that they work well. Thanks for testing kitchen gadgets. I'm personally addicted to these!
It's funny but that egg separator looks like a nose aspirator that you use on babies but it's a lot bigger so apparently it works on suction and sometimes that can be imperfect
The AnyTongs really needs a default flat set that's dimpled on one side for gripping, and _on occasion_ if you need to augment for different tasks, use one's own matching pair of silverware. But honestly, if you have a 3D printer any design like this with a live hinge is easy enough to make.
James I'm a big fan. I'd love to see you compare full sets of pots and pans. I've seen you review several pots/pans separately but when folks are just starting out the full sets are tempting.
Ah, I was walking through the house with a hot bowl of soup the other night trying not to spill it all over myself - I am blind and clumsy. The silicone lid would solve this problem.
11:10 Yeah, it's the steam. These things form an area of low pressure in the space between your food and the silicone pad. But the steam raises the pressure inside and so there is no area of low pressure.
That egg contraption is based off the fact that you can use an empty rinsed out 2-liter plastic bottle to do the same thing… and probably get a lot more yolks in one shot. Neat design though. Silicone lids looks pretty nice too. Definitely no replacing a good set of sturdy tongs though, good call
My daughter had to make a dessert for a cooking competition, and it called for 5 egg yolks without the egg whites. She had to make this dish 3 times. I really wish I had that egg separator because it seems like it would have saved a lot of time, and made things a lot easier. While I can't think of a use for it now, I will definitely be buying it next time.
There has been kitchen tongs for generations so those any tongs are not needed. Besides you would use all your utensils as tongs to cook one meal and wouldn't have any to eat with....LOL
I have an egg separator. It looks kind of like a flower when you crack the egg into it. The yolk stays on the part that looks like the middle of a flower & the egg white goes down below into your glass or bowl. I like it. I don’t use it very often because I don’t have to separate eggs very often but I like the one I have
I don't think the spaghetti issue is necessarily an Anytong problem because wouldn't those same issues occur with normal tongs as well? (I wouldn't know because I use the tool designed for it, a pasta fork)
What about using hands? Easy to separate yolk from the whites. Or that suction bulbous thingy we use on kids noses/mouth. Cut the long tip down... Squeeze and may work same.
The last product, the silicon lids, are nearly useless. The suction isn't trustworthy as you point out, and most microwavable foods should be in a vented container to avoid overheating and possible food explosions. I'll just stick with my vented tupperware containers, thanks anyway. Great reviews as always.
Have you tried turning one of the forks over, when using the AnyTongs (so that one fork would settle within the other)? I would imagine, if the device allowed the utensils to come together enough, the two being in the same direction would allow for more of a pinching surface.
Two hits that I would buy. Any Side out for sure, not sure about the silicone lids. I love the idea but I really don't need so many of them. Thanks, James, awesome video. 🤗😊🥰
at the end it looked like the red lid didnt seal right. the tongs are a good idea but i know my silverware wont work in them and is it really to hard to just rise a pair of tongs if you dont want to mix food together?
those Any Tongs are pretty neat. I hate tongs because they take up a entire drawer but this makes them collapsable. I'm betting they would work better for plastic utensils but that kinda defeats the point a little bit.
Of course your two-fork tongs are going to get stuck together between the tines if you're picking up nothing or something like noodles. You'd use that setup for solid items. There are actually special spaghetti spoons that do that job, but who's picking up pasta out of a boiling pot anyway? You drain it. The egg separator is a goof. It works but so do a multitude of other methods just as easy.
my "too much plastics in the world" sensibilities have to wonder why you'd buy an egg separator that you have to pay for, store, and wash when the shells are right there, don't cost extra, don't need washing or storing, and can even be used for natural fertilizer. get more than one tong if you're unsure of your sanitary abilities - but just wash them! the lids are interesting, reusable is often good vs plastic wrap. er, water is weird in microwaves, i'd stay away from it! it has a boiling point you can't see
Egg sep, I can see a use for it, I would just buy egg whites from the store though tbh. Tongs, no, too much hassle for something not as good. Silicon Lids, Yes, but Id buy the individual sizes from somewhere like Temu so I had a few of the larger ones and none of the small ones.
I bought those silicone lids for making rice because my pot lids are too loose, and I kept losing water to evaporation and my rice turned out hard. They work great for that!

Good to know
You can separate an egg with an empty water bottle the same way
That's exactly what I do.
Or your fingers if you're not too precious 😂
Gotta love people with the time and money to make solutions to problems that didn't exist...
I just separate eggs by hand when making pasta or ice cream.
Or poke a hole in the egg and let the whites drain out.
Those silicone lids would come in very handy if, as some reviewers said, there were more of the large ones & less of the small ones.
So true. I very rarely find myself wanting to put a lid on a cup.
They should have an alternative pack.

I literally use a plastic bottle the exact same way to extract yolks
Ooh, microwaved water, that's my favourite snack!
I have an egg separator. It looks kind of like a flower when you crack the egg into it. The yolk stays on the part that looks like the middle of a flower & the egg white goes down below into your glass or bowl. I like it. I don’t use it very often because I don’t have to separate eggs very often but I like the one I have
For 13 bucks you can get a couple sets of normal ass tongs lol
I like the silicone lids, I'll stick to my regular tong's. As always thank you for sharing 😊
I don't think the spaghetti issue is necessarily an Anytong problem because wouldn't those same issues occur with normal tongs as well? (I wouldn't know because I use the tool designed for it, a pasta fork)
Yep!! Tongs don’t work (for me) with spaghetti!
Never seen Anyone use tongs for Spaghetti, ever. I'm 51
If you put the spoons in bowl facing out and you can play the spoons. Lol
Try the anytongs with two spoons, but in a "spooning" position.
Does that work, and wouldn't that be better, by providing a larger "holding area"?
Have you tried turning one of the forks over, when using the AnyTongs (so that one fork would settle within the other)? I would imagine, if the device allowed the utensils to come together enough, the two being in the same direction would allow for more of a pinching surface.
I wonder if the any tongs will work better for the pasta if you turn one of the forks around, so it pinches it more?
Regarding the Anytongs, for pasta etc. Could you place one of the forks facing the opposite way to improve how they pick up items?
7:04 they should just create detatchable tong ends, and then design a way to lock them on more secure.
With the price of eggs today, you are a hard core gadget tester!
Telling someone to pick up a hot soup by the lid is like asking for a lawsuit.
Two hits that I would buy. Any Side out for sure, not sure about the silicone lids. I love the idea
but I really don't need so many of them. Thanks, James, awesome video. 🤗😊🥰
That egg separator is actually pretty cool. The anytongs sort of suck. Just using another set of tongs would be easier.
My dude James really went through like $100 in eggs to demonstrate the separator works. The GOAT!
Interesting gadget selection!😊
at the end it looked like the red lid didnt seal right. the tongs are a good idea but i know my silverware wont work in them and is it really to hard to just rise a pair of tongs if you dont want to mix food together?
those Any Tongs are pretty neat. I hate tongs because they take up a entire drawer but this makes them collapsable. I'm betting they would work better for plastic utensils but that kinda defeats the point a little bit.
Who uses tongs for spaghetti?!?!… serial killers that’s who… lol
The tongs are a good idea, but now you have more dishes to do
Of course your two-fork tongs are going to get stuck together between the tines if you're picking up nothing or something like noodles. You'd use that setup for solid items. There are actually special spaghetti spoons that do that job, but who's picking up pasta out of a boiling pot anyway? You drain it. The egg separator is a goof. It works but so do a multitude of other methods just as easy.
Liquid hot magma.😂😂Reminds me of the classic "egg mist"
5:31 The AnyTongs "works in a pinch" I like the pun
Yeah I wouldn't trust those silicone lids with the liquid hot magma underneath either
my "too much plastics in the world" sensibilities have to wonder why you'd buy an egg separator that you have to pay for, store, and wash when the shells are right there, don't cost extra, don't need washing or storing, and can even be used for natural fertilizer. get more than one tong if you're unsure of your sanitary abilities - but just wash them! the lids are interesting, reusable is often good vs plastic wrap. er, water is weird in microwaves, i'd stay away from it! it has a boiling point you can't see
Egg sep, I can see a use for it, I would just buy egg whites from the store though tbh. Tongs, no, too much hassle for something not as good. Silicon Lids, Yes, but Id buy the individual sizes from somewhere like Temu so I had a few of the larger ones and none of the small ones.
Would it help if you rotate one of the utensils by 180° in the Anytongs?
All through that egg bit, I was picturing a chicken watching him have fun with bugged-out eyes... 😅
