Funnily enough I just went to A&E and the nurse told me to use my affected side… I challenged her because I had knee surgery half a year ago so am used to a crutch, and she told me I was doing it wrong the whole time. Glad to know by this video I was always right…
This is so helpful...i was using two crutches then i was told to start using one crutch and i didnt have an idea on how to really walk with one crutch...you are a lifesaver...thankyouuuuu
If you injure your leg bit and its weight bearing but you stiĺl want to give it some support, you use the crutch on the opposite sode of the injury. And, its the doctor who saw her, the pne who gave her the boot and crutch shes using, to teach her how to use crutch to give her the extra support. Not the management company.
REALLY I DIDN'T KNEW AS JUST TODAY I STARTED TO USE SINGLE CRUTCHE AS RIGHT SIDE KNEE PAIN. I WAS USING SAME SIDE UT VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. NOW ITS OK THANKS
Hi there, I have a broken arm on one side and a brokenleg on the other. My doc wants me to start partial weight bearing on one crutch, but can I do that when the leg break is the same side as the good arm?
thanks! i have a question tho, for when im not walking - for example standing still and dancing and swaying to music, would it be better for the crutch to be on my injured knee? for more balance? or should i keep it at my opposite side?
What I did when I got injured: your right leg is broken, so put the crutch in your right arm. Step with your left leg, then when you’d usually step with the right, put the crutch down instead and then swing on it until you land on your left leg. Then repeat. So step, put crutch down and use it to lunge yourself forward, then land on healthy leg
I hear that a lot. I think I’ve had so many people watch shows or movies where people use it on the wrong side that you automatically think that that’s the correct way to do it.
Just tried it and my left knee hated me entirely. The physcial therapist said I need to start walking with 1 crutch this week and I don't think it's possible for another week at the very least.
I have a question. What if you have only one leg, And you have one crutch. Do you hold it on the side with no leg, or the side with leg? I'm just wondering.
my right leg has a problem with the tissue in the knee for example ligament ... and its really painful but my other leg is ok how do u think i could walk properly with it cuz i'm going to be doing it next week
For able-bodied people, try a scientific test by putting a sharp stone in your shoe and perform 3 tests: walk without the aid of a crutch, walk with the crutch on the opposite side and walk with the crutch on the same side. In my experience, the same side is much easier as you can use it to completely relieve the pressure on the foot. So does the advice not need to consider what the ailment is and the upper body capability? e.g. is the opposite leg advice, just to assist balance rather than to take weight off the injured leg? What are the pros and cons of opposite-side versus same-side usage?
I totally agree with you. I lost one crutch and found using it on the ‘bad’ leg side kept all the weight off of my injury. Using it on the same side as injury made me very unbalanced and prone to stopping to correct myself. The Kinesiology folks may be correct in theory, but not for me!
For some reason I just can't get the hang of it where it feels natural/comfortable using one crutch opposite of my bad leg. It just feels like it should be on the other side. So frustrating.
Thank you very much for this advice. I had (incorrectly) been holding the crutch on my affected (injured) side.

Broken left arm broken right leg. Any advice on how to use 1 crutch. Even physios are confused what I should do.

Damn. Its impossible for me to train my brain to use the crutch on the opposite side of my injured leg.

It may take you a little longer.
Thank you so much for this! I was told to start getting used to one crutch and had no idea how.
You are so welcome!
