I've broken my ankle in 2 places and my tibia. I was using my crutches wrong for just over a week. Watching this video has been very helpful as i now have my crutches at the right height and am not hurting my arms/shoulders when walking. I'm more so jumping though as I'm so worried about putting my foot down but definitely going to try this and see if this helps😊
Great instructions on how to use crutches non-weight bearing - 5 weeks in I'd been using a scooter as I couldn't get the hang of the crutches but now I'm feeling much more confident. Thank you
First day after surgery for complete rupture of the Achilles tendon and I don't feel safe on crutches😔 Going to use all these tips to hopefully improve!!👍👍
this video is fantastic!! I definetly had my crutches waaay to long and my shoulders were getting tense. I will also change my gait to 'shadow walk' as you suggested. Thank you so much!!
Very clear and explanatory for all instances. I figured I was walking with wrong arm (after acl rec. surgery) and easily switched to opposite arm which feels much much better. Thanks Maryke !
Hey how was surgery? The pain, the healing process the discomfort? I fell off a bike on my knee and I went for an x-ray which didn't show any obvious fractures but it was recommended I go for an MRI. It's been more than a week and I still have limited mobility, discomfort and pain
You dont know how much youve helped me i have severe hip pain im 64 i need to use at least one crutch occasionally two in hoping soon to get cortisone injections i frequently have to wear a hip or back brace just to cope with daily life
I have a malleolar and tibia fractures. It's over a year now. I just realized I've been using the crutch wrongly. I'm glad I came across this video. Thank you.
Brilliant, thank you for all the help from crutch length to one crutch walking! Just a note, if you have a cast or boot (as I have), the leg lengths are different and do create their own imbalance.
Not sure whether this is available in all countries, but there are products for evening up your leg length while you have a cast or boot, e.g. geni.us/EsVA4I
I was just complaining to my husband that every time I set up a new crutch/stick at home, it feels perfect but as soon as I get outside I find it's too short. You've just solved the mystery: shoes. I'm so embarrassed that this has never occurred to me; I always set it up at home in my bare feet and then go outside all lopsided 😂
I found the information interesting however if I am not mistaken, Correct way was with one crutch left arm as right leg or ankle injured, then you you swapped it to the injured side, which you said was left, but it was your right side you moved it to... I replayed it to just to check what had been said. I gave up with crutches then one crutch, but I am still suffering from an injury, small fracture, moon boot 4/6 weeks crutches, then to just a ankle strap had 2 xrays proving on 2nd one fracture healed, now 4 months after injury, my Dr sending me for another 2 xrays one of each ankle to see if there is any problems, I asked her why, as ligaments tendons tissue damage not seen on xrays, she apparently cannot send me for scans or mri. I still am only doing own rehabilitation. I drove my car for the first time last night, and my ankle is in so much pain. 4 months no work, no money to pay bills and rent isn’t even covered by my basic pension money from the government, sadly having to rely on handouts from family and friends. Any help please. Living in Europe.
You may find some of the lighter exercises in these videos useful to build strength - just don't do to much going up on toes when you're standing yet - ease into those very slowly and don't try and lift too high. Often even just one visit to a physio can be super useful to get the best exercises for your situation. Your doctor should be able to refer you to one if you are in Europe. Thanks very much ! This video has been very helpful , I’ve been hopping and very unstable so been pushing myself around in office chair and now my shoulders hurt ! Will try later ! Hopefully will be able to wear a boot soon … will be looking for videos in that
I wish I had seen this ankle before I started walking about 😂 Doctor told me to be off the crutches by the end of the week. I've been weight baring but I've forgotten how to walk 😂 I will try walk with 2 over next few days then drop to one crutch once I can take a step. The big boot keeps throwing me off balance, they aren't the easiest things to walk in. Any tips on how to walk in a rocker boot without crutches?
See if you can get hold of this thing (or similar). You put it on your other shoe to level things out with the rocker boot: geni.us/EsVA4I Also, this video of ours is all about the transition from non weight bearing to full weight bearing: ua-cam.com/video/4EEduvOX__8/v-deo.html
Yes, crutches can help to get you moving. But try not to spend too much time on crutches, so get help from a physio (if you haven't already) to get the injury rehabbed. Here's our video on meniscus tears: ua-cam.com/video/C6loNMqxj7A/v-deo.html
Broke my ankle on the 16th of march. Struggling with crutches and keeping my balance so rather used a walker. Will have to use crutches again though so need all the help i can get
Great video... easy with naked arms... But what if you are wearing a jacket or a coat, and it doesn't fit through the loops??... I need to walk through rain and snow!
You will likely have to keep that leg straight out in front of you and just use your uninjured leg. It can also help to wear a shoe with a thick sole on your support leg or even add an Even-up (geni.us/EsVA4I) to it so that you're higher on that side and can move the one that can't bend through more easily.
Can I use a walker instead of crutches? At 61 years I'm a bit wobbly and need to get back my balance. The ankle support is hugely helpful in stabilizing though.
I don't know what injury you have but a walker is usually a good substitute for crutches - always best to ask your doctor who actually knows your situation
Hi Angeline, Our physios are based in the UK, but we're an online practice who do our consultations via video call, so we see patients from all over the world. More information here: www.sports-injury-physio.com/
Ask the person who is in charge of your rehab or who told you to start weightbearing - we can't make safe suggestions without knowing your full situation.
Is it generally not recommended to walk with the crutch same side? I have Hypermobile EDS and need the crutch to support my left leg, but my right shoulder joint is far too unstable to support any weight
You should do what works best for you. It doesn't make sense to force your right arm to work if that will cause you more trouble. If using the crutch in your left hand provides the support you need, then go for it.
I was about to post the same question. They look exactly like the ones I just ordered from Amazon for less than $50($48). They're the Medline MDS805161 model.
Stair are tricky - you always have your "good" leg on higher step because it can lift you up and slowly lower you down. So going up, have 1 hand on the rail and place good leg on step above, then bring other to join (crutch follows injured leg). Going down, place injured leg and crutch down first (holding rail with 1 hand) and then bring good leg to join.
I actually came here because I was curious as to how people walked with crutches. Though from watching how you walk I've realized I walk with the fronts of my feet without the "roll" and I was wondering if that was normal. If not then could it lead to future problems?
I have a tibial plateau fracture of my right leg and am able to get up and down stairs easily with one forearm crtuch and holding the banister. How do I carry the other crutch for when I'm on a flat surface at the top amd bottom of stairs? Any suggestions much appreciated
I don't think that there is any good solution for carrying it. Some of my patients have either bought an extra crutch so they could leave on at the top and bottom or they have hooked the round bit of the extra crutch around their forearm so it dangles loosely sticking out to the back as they climb up and then they just slide it down ahead of them for coming down.
@@SportsInjuryPhysio Thanks very much for your advice and will try what you say about dangling the one not in use on my forearm. Might try to get hold of another too. All the best and thanks again.
I'm doing the pretend walking now! My brain and body was scared as I been on crutches for 7 weeks now age 56. I do bio metric exercises! Circles and stretches and soaking and circulation is flooding back praise Jesus
I've got one good, one bad leg... Is it all right to use only one crutch, without putting my arm through the loop, like a walking stick?... I can't get my coat through the loop
In my experience it is better to use a walking stick then because these crutches are not really stable and have a way of flicking out from you if you don't put your arm through the loop
@@SportsInjuryPhysio thanks for our kind reply - - would a stick give me full support like a crutch, as I cannot really put any weight on my right leg when I walk and the stick would have to bear all my weight? I am not fat though
This make sense , I’ve been hopping and holding my leg up scared to put it on the ground as my Doc said “ don’t put weight on it “ will try this way and hopefully won’t hurt any flies 👍

If you can't manage that and you are not yet allowed to put weight through the leg, then it is better to keep it bent up away from the floor.
